I'm a Montreal Caucasian male Anglo in my sixties who loves Multicultural capabilities of the city of Montreal and Asian grocery stores. One near my office which is huge actually moved away and I tried to go Way east of Montreal and visited the store a couple of times and they've changed and it's interesting but I can't be driving 30 minutes each Direction just to get specialty groceries. So I needed another Asian grocery store of which I have three or four near me but they're Limited in their offerings compared to the one that moved away from set my office area that is huge! I had a buddy who goes stops at the Middle Eastern grocery store but it's right across from his house and yet this Asian grocery store is only maybe six blocks down and he drives his car yet he besmirched the store and I didn't want to believe it so I visited the store myself in the West Island of Montreal off of sources Boulevard. Folks let me tell you, I was exceptionally impressed! It's well setup and when you enter it greets you with a message welcoming you to the store as the doors slide open and it gives you a choice of carts that you put in a quarter and get it back so there are shopping carts all over the place and big big baskets on Wheels with extendable handle in case you just want to use that. So the setup is very smart and it's very welcoming and the next thing I noticed is this place is quite big inside in fact large very large, not huge , but very large. It's very very clean it's got a lot of stuff organized very neatly and tons of Isles and Frozen areas butcher area and lots of cash with very positive people at the checkout counters and more. I even found Frozen Jamaican patties which I also love and an exceptionally good choice of bok choy! Their vegetables weren't just hose down but they were actually fresh. And fresh is great! In fact there's a place that is huge selling organic food whose own vegetables don't look nearly as fresh as these do! walking up and down the aisles I even came across some kitchen utensils and supplies and gadgets and a most amazing offering of cleavers! I fell for one of them and I believe the price is even better than on Amazon that I saw and I are almost identical one. High-quality decent price Superior weight and sharpness! I love my Chef's knives and kitchen knives and my Cleavers and I enjoy cooking and preparing food tremendously so this wonderful Asian grocery store filled mostly with non-caucasians in fact so that's a good sign isn't it!? Oh I meant to say mostly Asian people that actually come here comfortably to shop and that's my type of place. there's not one aisle where I I am not attracted to buy something. And the first time I was here I did buy a lot of stuff but I only came in for a couple of things and I wanted a place that wasn't a half an hour away from my location in Montreal without traffic taking the highways and this is probably the one I'm going to focus on as my go-to place whenever I'm near the West Island I will definitely zoom into this one the good thing about being quite large but not absolutely huge is that you don't feel set up an exhausted after you finish going through the aisles like some sort of huge other Asian grocery store or that's a huge Warehouse store that we all join up with memberships but we end up really fed up by the time we leave all thinking that we're getting better prices which we are often not! this place has great prodigious great items great choices in Frozen products a lot of Asian specialty items from canned to box too Frozen to Fresh and a whole lot more at very very decent prices, except for the cookies I bought at the cash LOL and this store being such an all-around winner deserves my five-on-five easily! And it has my favorite supply of Ginger candies and sugar cane. I'm thrilled to discover this as well. .
Customer services at Sheng Tai Marché is the nadir. I bought coconut at this store, on arriving home I discovered it was plain rotten. I went back there some fifteen minutes later and the cashier who claimed to be the manager told me point blanc she wasn't going to do nothing about it. This actually took place on Wednesday, April 5, 2017, at about 5:30 pm. The cashier was at cash 3. Even though I had the product at hand, the cashiers still arqued vehemently that it wasn't rotten enough. They went ahead making a fool of me in the presence of other clients, asking me to return the water that was inside. And even going to the extent of telling me to "shut up, you fool. I will call the police on you." I left the store baffled. As a Canadian, I can guarantee, I have never witness such poor customer service any where prior. When I got home I called the store to see if I could speak to the manager, but was again redirected to the same lady who did not hesitate to hang up on me. I felt more than humiliated just for doing what every ordinary customer would do. I have tried contacting consumer protection but the office was closed. I will definitely do so first thing in the morning. To live or do business in this country, people should be conscious of the values we uphold; mutual respect being one of them. Bellow is a photograph of the rotten coconut I bought from Sheng Tai Marché.
It's with regret that I give this place 2 stars... That many because they carry some cool and interesting ethnic products. Firstly, as soon as I walked in, I was greeted with a gust of smelly air... rotten fish-scented. They only have a bunch of little cargo carts which is fine since it saves on space although it might be challenging for an elderly person in terms of bending down to drop items into the cart, then retrieving them after. The carts are so dirty and sticky. The floors are gross as well. Some of the fruits and veggies had mold on them. I wouldn't buy them anyway as I'm concerned with the nasty rotten fish smell infiltrating them. Some of the cashiers are friendly but they're generally robotic. The lady who was seemingly the store manager is an extremely rude female who definitely should not work with the public. At 4:46pm, she ran around yelling 'the store is closing, go pay.' I was on my way to pay anyway so that's fine BUT she should learn about manners and common courtesy. I won't go back there. There are plenty of other stores where you can get the same products. If you like a good shopping experience, go elsewhere.
Update: on March 19th update to 1 star: what a rude cashier, grumpy and yelling at the client in front of me then when it was my turn to pay for a Soya sauce and a sesame oil totalling $8 she said no for payment by credit card then No for debit card as her minimum is $10, really? For debit? Then she wanted cash but i didn't have cash on me like most people nowadays then she said: Go buy something else but you stand in line again... i answered: keep them, i don't want them anymore and left, never to come back, what do they care... my older review was the following: Nice everything especially the fresh fish with reasonable prices. I would give a 5 stars except for the weird attitude of the elderly guy behind the fish counter. He's been there forever and probably he hates his job. Today there was another new guy that served me with a smile and detailed explanation/recommendations compared to the other man's weird way of shouting back at customers but the rest of the Market is excellent except of course the rude cashiers.
March 9th @ around 2:32pm Food court at Sheing tai DDO, Very disappointed with your staff a chinese lady who was arguing with me because I asked her nicely that I wanted the fresh sesame balls that was brought out by the cook. A lady before me was waiting on the side for the fresh one as well and she had no problem giving it to her. When I saw her putting all the old ones in my box,I asked nicely can you please put the news one and she started saying that I was not a fair customer and that I would of taken it if I didn't see new ones. I told her I took some because I saw the news one and she then refused to sell it to me. I then told her I want it and shoul not refuse me from buying. She then said this time she will give it and next time she will give me old or will not sell. OMG worse experience ever. Please do something with your staff teach them politeness...
A crash course in customer service would serve this industry well. 0 skills whatsoever. $10.00 minimum for interac which in a world where people barely carry any cash on them and rely on card is an inconvenience to have such a restriction in place but I digress. It pales in comparison when this market carries unique produce you can’t find in a typical grocery store. We were however just 0.15 cents short of $10.00 and the agent refused to budge. For 0.15 cents, are you joking? On the matter of principal I’d have left everything and reflected the point that they would have lost an over $9.00 sale over 0.15 cents Although their products are good; there are many Asian markets across the Island of Montreal; I’d rather drive the extra 10 km to match the service to the product and not have to support literal penny pinchers.
Today I went to buy fish at the store, it’s employee at the kiosk at the fish section didn’t want to weight my fish (it was on special at 7.48 a pound), I kinda wanted to know how much to expect to spend on those fish. At the cash with around 180$ of groceries we asked about a coupon on sun flower seeds to munch, like how to apply it, but we were completely ignored. I then saw that she put the wrong price and asked her to correct but was ignored... it was like a few cents so whatever... but essentially, cashier and clerks have attitude, my mom asked pretty nicely (shy Chinese woman) but was straight up ignored by the cashier. It feels like you are forced to be a Karen for them to even give a F But otherwise prices are pretty good their old staff is really sweet but it’s just the manager and the ones refilling the shelves
This one star is only because their fruits and veggies seemed fresh but otherwise is just a 0 to me and I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone ! People working there are simply rude and disrespectful. They don’t value you as a customer . They also try to cheat on the prices once you arrive at the cash so be CAREFUL!!! They can’t even speak English or French and they doesn’t even take the time to listen to you before starting to scream at you . It’s like we as client we are disturbing them . Very smelly place , unhelpful staffs , poor service, arrogant cashiers . There’s many another great places where you could buy exact same things with better customer service. Never ever I will return to this place !
Arguably the most known Asian Supermarket in the West Island, Located in Des Sources Boulevard. I find it pretty small in comparison to the other Asian Supermarkets and the smallest of the Tai family, after Lian Tai & Fu Tai. Nonetheless, you can find pretty much everything from an Asian Supermarket, which includes fruits & vegetables from Asia, Rice Noodles & Udons, flavored ingredients & sauces, bubble teas and so on. There's even a hot meal, fresh meat, fisheries & bakery sections. West Island is generally car-centric so if you're using public transit like the STM bus lines, the place might not be as accessible than other Asian Supermarkets, unless you live in the area.
No one can help you because none of the staff speak English or French. Items may be expired. Be careful when you pass at the cash, I bought a certain type of fish but she punched in the price of another more expensive fish...I corrected her. At the ready-made-food area they try to be slick by selling you every item separately and charge you an arm and a leg...when you try explain something or get an explanation forget, unless you speak mandarin or Cantonese or something. They have some good items to buy but overall thumbs way down.
On Feb 1, 2021 I placed an order online and it was delivered on a time manner to me next day in three well arranged boxes for $5 of charge as announced. Everything inside was clean and fresh. Three items were out of stock (missing) so they were not delivered with the rest of the order but they offered me a coupon code to be used in my next order. The coupon was for $12 and cents, equivalent to the valued charged for items that were missing in my original order. Their online page works fine, is clear and friendly.
Asian grocery stores Sheng tai located at boul. Des Source is one among very popular in the West Island for its Seafood, meat, pork, fish, varieties of fresh vegetables and fruits, varieties of frozen items, non perishables items, varieties of rice, and others. Anyone who love to cook and eat the Asian foods were recommended . If you are hungry at the time of grocery inside, there is a fast food counter beside the meat section, where you can find varieties of cooked foods .
No clear place to line up marked so they yell at you if you didn’t know. Cashiers are rude, I went to pay and needed a bag and she said couldn’t I read? They don’t give bags. I said yes but not from outside the store. She snapped that it’s in the newsletter! Like everyone gets their newsletter! I find them condescending and rude at the best of times, normally they are grumpy. The lady that serves the cooked food is different, always friendly and pleasant. She is the one star.
Congratulations! You lost a customer today. The concept of forcing customers to pay coins to use a shopping cart is both insulting and outdated. I had been prepared to do a full shopping because I know this establishment has a good reputation for its produce and selection of other ingredients. But I was greeted with an atmosphere of such complete distrust that I don't think I will ever come back here and not just because I didn't have a $2 coin in my pocket. Good luck.
A handy Asian store in Dollard Des Ormeaux. There are bigger one and better one if you do not mind driving to the Montreal direction. Adequate selection of fresh produce and fruit, but from time to time you will feel disappointed as selection run out fast. It has a food bar by the side of the meat section, and the meat section by the side of the fish section. Not a prefect setup. Ventilation of this place should be improved as it smells fish.
I love the variety and accessibility of this store, but I really dislike the smell. They have a butcher and fish shop in the back, but the smell hits you from the moment you walk in. Because of this I avoid buying fish or meat here. I'm not saying their products are not fresh or quality, but smelling them from the entrance makes me avoid them. Any butcher or fish store I go to generally does not smell of the products.
If you don't mind getting push out of the ways by the staff stocking shelf receiving no help and someone being rude to you well this is the place.Staff don't respond ignore you unless they need to go true don't respect there own arrow. PRODUCTs great variety great price but beware full of dates didnt realize bought food expired over a year I am currently recovering from food poisoning !
This is a pretty good place for Asian food. A lot of choices of different varieties of things. The size of the place is not that big at all, and really one of the smaller ones around Montreal. But it is the only one on the West Island and not missing much of the choices makes it a good fit for your shopping needs. The price is not high compared to the big chain stores either.
Absolutely love this grocery store! It has so many options for anything you need. Including cool candy and weird drinks. The food in the back is delicious (especially the chicken legs, they're surprisingly super juicy)! Always sales going on, everything is cheap in general. All I gotta say is that if you love Asian food, this is the perfect place to shop!
The main oriental grocery store in West Island area. Can probably find most if not all oriental vegetables. There is a fresh meat, fish section and even a cooked foods counter. Very busy during weekends. Somewhat clean and plenty of parking. Prices are a little higher than other oriental stores in central Montreal but the convenience is worth it.
Clean, well organized asian grocery. Great selection given the size is not the biggest compared to Kim Phat locations. There are a few less frozen seafood, fresh meat and fresh noodle options, but what is there is well curated! Spacious parking, only downside is the large shopping carts require a coin to unlock and I always forget to bring one.
If you can handle the very strong fish odor that hits you from the door, you'll maybe be ok. An awesome variety of Asian products with some Polish, Latin American and Caribbean products as well. Sometimes they sell plants too:) There is a substantially sized cosmetic counter, and in the back they sell pots and pans and other household items.
Great selection of Asian and other ethnic foods. Vegetables and meat so far always very fresh and good. Good prices, helpful staff even when language is sometimes a bit of a problem (don't know Chinese...). Oh, I forgot the "lunch counter": lots of goodies and very fair prices, wish they did prepared meats (BBQ pork, duck etc).
This is easily the dirtiest, most foul smelling Asian market I have seen in Canada. The entire store reeks of rotten fish and the shelves are filthy. Employees walk around on the phone with their mask falling off, staff do not speak either official language. I pity anyone who shops here, you will get sick one way or another.
Fresh fish anyone? Such a huge selection including live lobster and tanks full of live fish! After shopping for fresh fruits/vegetables, huge selection of Asian sauces plus condiments and you are hungry but do not have time to cook when you get home? No worries...there is even a long counter of ready made Asian food. Enjoy:)
Decent prices and a great variety of asian products. On the other hand the employees are kinda rude (at least some of them), every now and then there is an awkward smell in the store, specially in the summer and if you want to pay for the stuff you bought with a card (credit or debit), there is a minimum of ten dollars pay.
Crazy weird stuff, lots of Fresh Asian vegetables, live fish tanks and muscles. A butcher that moves, nice pig and cow cut as you want. Special parts in fridge and freezer. Togo, noodles, lots of inventory. Very clean and staff works to keep it nice. $10min for credit card. Good bokchoi, give it a rince first. (Bit of sand)
Quality of products are acceptable. Store can sometimes feel unkempt, the meat counter has no line system, and the employee makes no effort to first come first serve. Other than that, this place is pretty well stocked for a store of this size, if you know where to look. And the prices are all very reasonable.
Great selection, great price! Ton's of stuff you won't see in a regular grocery that your used to. Love going there to discover new things, lot's of filipino/pinoy ingredients that I haven't found in other asian grocery. I recommend Sheng tai to anyone that want to try to elevate their food to another level.
Very nice store with a great selection but the butcher has very poor hygienic practice. Touches raw meat constantly and doesn’t seem to change his gloves. When I bought meat the bag he gave me was covered in raw meat on the exterior. Also gave me attitude when I asked for a second bag because of this.
The worst customer service I've experienced, especially from the person at the customer service counter casher#1.When they are being rude and disrespectful, they suddenly start speaking their language, so you can't understand.. DO NOT SHOP AT THE STORE, THERE IS OTHER STORES LIKE THIS TO SHOP AT.
Love it. Big time u get all. U whant as asian. Product. Lot of parking price. Is. Good. Beside also beside a vietnamese resto. What do u. Whant more. Look. Pork liver. To rare. Black chicken. To. Shrimp. To calamari. U. Want. A special soy sauce. Lite or fermented. They have it. Ty and have fun
Good resource for fish, dried goods and frozen foods. Cleanliness of store 3/5. New cashiers are not really helpful with checkout, no intentions of helping me to bag my groceries, I always bag ALL of my own groceries, seriously a little help? Especially I have 5-6 bags. Customer service 1/5.
Place was great at first, but then the staff just became ruder and ruder as time went on. I've been a regular customer since they opened, but recently I've decided not to go back. Not worth the awkwardness and impolite staff who just bark at you. Hardly ever a thank you from them. Too bad.
Everything you need for your weekly cooking. Vegetables, meat, poultry, frozen goods, pickled goods, fruits. And a variety of things. You get the Asian goods and produce and also your normal stuff like sliced bread, milk and eggs. Big parking space. Quick service at the cashiers.
Bumped up to 5 stars. Last visit, someone was at the door giving everyone gloves. Everyone was also wearing masks. I felt safe buying the stuff I need. Though, they should improve the arrows in the aisle coz it doesn't make sense. Aside from that, they're doing a great job!
It does really smell of fish.... but huge variety of products not found anywhere else... staff is unhelpful at best... you are on your own here.. prices used to be lower. I am assuming anything sold from take out was ready to die on shelf, meat, fish , vegetable section...
Great location for asian foods and snacks. Arrows on floor are a little confusing. Fish section smells fishy unlike other grocery stores. Prices are very good compared to other grocery stores. Felt like I left with a lot for what I spent. Love the little rolling baskets.
Make sure you check the expiration dates on the items you buy. I bought some food items that are expired, really grossed me out when I found out. It’s awesome to have an Asian grocery in the West Island, but selling expired food items is really not acceptable.
They are closing at 8:45 not 9:00pm. ——- I been asked to leave the shop at 8:40 and they closed the shop and left the shop at 8:45. After i told them in google map said 9pm they start to yelling. Was so shocked how dramatic they were acting.
WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE EVER !!! If you can please do not go there. Customer service is 0/10. They do not know how to talk to customers. Today is June 12, 2018. I went there to buy ONE specific item. The were supposed to close at 8 PM and I
Great selections of Asian food! I found small green sour mango here with a reasonable price. Staff here isn't that helpful, only if you can speck Chinese, they might be able to assist you more. Overall pricing and selection are reasonable.
U can find different type of seafood (frozen shrimps, calamari, crabs, fish) but the shop smells awful and I bought fish but later as soon as i went home that it went off. It has good collection of veggies and fruits at very good price.
I have a filipino girlfriend, and we found all of the favourite foods she liked from her country. If you know what you are looking for, definitely a good place for you. However, everything is really compact and sometimes hard to find.
They have fairly priced items and great specials. Most of the butchers do not speak English which makes it difficult to communicate with. Aside that, the store is clean and they are usually always stocking up on items.
Asian produce and snacks you can't find elsewhere. Made in Taiwan products available which gives me peace of mind vs. mainland source products. Follow the lines on floor to checkout at cash register (or else!)
I purchased walnuts today for which tax was added. I visited Quebec website and it's clearly stated that walnuts/nuts can be taxed only if they are sugar or chocolate coated. You cannot tax plain walnuts.
Love this grocery store, always have great stock and prices are reasonable. Produce is good and cheap. Good selection of vegetarian products (check out the tofu section and gyoza/dumplings).
Clerk took advantage of my 89 year old grandfather today. Mentioned that the credit card machine wasn’t working and forced him to pay cash. He overpaid and they short changed him. Dishonest
Food quality and service are bad I paid 6$ for 2 guavas just to figure out that they were rotten inside. They put fresh and old (to a point that it's not edible) meat in the same pack, the
The products are good but the customer service is horrible. The lady who was taking care of the cashier was extremely rude and was yelling at us or simply not answering or questions.
Very nice place, smell fishy but that's all right. The meat and fruit are amazing. They ensaymada cake are delicious! Give it a try, it's fresh and very good price for the quality.
If you're looking for Hello Panda, look no further! This place has a lot of hard to find items. Don't be discouraged by the long line ups to get to the cash, they go really quick.
Closing 10mins before than advertised time, the cashier arguing with another employee, smelly inside and a lot of staring from the meat section employees. Perfect fit for 1 star.
Very poor service! If you call to the store, they put you hold for lone time or hung up on you , if you call again, they recognize your # and put on an answer machine.
We're here weekly for fresh produce and pantry staples like crispy chili oil and sesame oil! The prices match the quality for fruits and veggies, no complaints:)
A place to go if you want anything Chinese Japanese or Korean. They have fresh vegetables, fresh meat and fish, a variety of Frozen items. Worth checking out.
Many choices of grocery items from different Asian sources including fruits veggies soups and Delicacies. Some great finds that you can't find anywhere else.
Great selection, especially of harder to find Asian foods. They also have a great and well priced hot food “restaurant” and it’s always fresh and delicious.
They have some exotic fruits and vegetables, but they are not always in the beat or freshest state. Otherwise, great selection of Asian and other items.
I asked an old male employee for help finding an item. He was very rude. It felt like I could have dropped dead in front of him and he wouldn't care.
It's just an okay place when you need Asian groceries in West Island. The place is not quite clean, and sometimes the owner is a little bit rushed.
It’s like visiting China town. Can find all the Asian food staples in one place and I’m so happy this market exists! It’s clean and well stocked.
Very nice and so much selection of foods from the Philippines, China and neighboring countries! Even ready to go food!
Good place to find authentic Chinese groceries. I wish they renovate it as more competitions coming to West Island.
Fresh produce. I often buy asian grocery at this store, for many years. Cashiers are very friendly and helpful.
Good prices on veggies and meats. Recipes are easy to do with all the variety of sauces and dry goods.
Good place since it’s the only place for Asian grocery items But wow customer service is sooo bad
Small but good prices, and I can't stand being in the meat and fish section. The odor is terrible
Spicy smell when you get in but no spicy prices, quite affordable. We'll certainly go back.
Different varieties of products, produce, and meats than your regular big box store
Chinese food is not expensive. It’s very good, fresh and you ll find variety
Very good selection of sauces. Great place to buy frozen dumplings.
Wow ... You can find any Asian grocery. Fruits are fresh
One of the many first Asian grocery stores in Montreal.
Looking for sambal oelek; they did not have it.
