The US Army Medical Department Museum is an outstanding and fascinating institution that offers a unique and informative glimpse into the history of military medicine in America. This museum is truly a hidden gem, filled with exhibits and displays that showcase the courage, dedication, and innovation of the men and women who have served in the Army's medical corps. One of the things that sets the US Army Medical Department Museum apart is its exceptional attention to detail. The exhibits are beautifully designed and curated, with a wealth of historical artifacts and interactive displays that truly bring the history of military medicine to life. From antique surgical tools to state-of-the-art medical technology, the museum's collection is truly awe-inspiring. In addition to its impressive collection of artifacts, the museum also offers a wide range of educational programs and events. Visitors can attend lectures and workshops on topics ranging from battlefield medicine to the latest developments in military healthcare, and there are always knowledgeable staff members on hand to answer questions and provide additional information. Overall, I highly recommend the US Army Medical Department Museum to anyone interested in the history of military medicine or the brave men and women who have served in the Army's medical corps. This museum is a true testament to the dedication and sacrifices of those who have worked to heal and protect our nation's servicemembers, and it is a must-visit destination for anyone who values our country's rich military history.

This is a super old review of the US Army Medical Department Museum, and I hope nothing much has changed. I went there in 2014, I only had a short time there before closing. I am a Nurse from the Singapore Army, and I absolutely and thoroughly loved every single exhibit, picture and piece of history there. My short visit there had shaped my view of the importance of the military medical fraternity to the US forces, and how important it is to other militaries around the world as ambassadors of good will. It has given me a strong sense or purpose in what I do till today (8 years later). If and when I ever get a chance to go back to San Antonio, or Fort Sam, I will dedicate an entire day there and read and see everything that I possibly can. Thank you for sharing this important history lesson for generations to come.

We saw this on TripAdvisor and decided to visit. Tried to call to figure our logistics, but no answer. Took Uber to visitor center to gain entrance to the base. No one at center or gate knew where museum was, just somewhere on the :other side" of the base. Sent off in wrong direction twice. Not eve post office staff knew where it was. Finally used Google on my phone to find it. No staff at the museum, just walk in and you're on your own. Time to leave and did not want to make hike back to main gate since we were right next to a gate. Finally found a lady in the gift shop who got us address just outside the gate so we could call Uber. Interesting museum, a nice hike and an adventure all in one

The best American military museum I have been to so far, and I have been to a lot of them. The comprehensive displays include items from every period in American military history and for every conceivable interest. From uniforms to ambulances, surgeons' kits to etchings, the collection focuses on the objects, as it should. The museum also has an extensive collection not on display, and staff graciously showed me items I requested to see. Some highlights: early medical tools, a set of WWI horse dentistry equipment, model horse drawn ambulances, and a Spanish hospital flag from the Span-Am War.

Open 10-4 M-Sat. Free to all; only catch is you have to be able to get on base. People are incredibly friendly. They know their stuff, and are plenty willing to share that knowledge with you if you ask. The place is always clean, and displays are frequently switched out so there's something new to see. I've been easily a half-dozen times in the past year or so, and they've not once disappointed me. Don't forget to sign the guest book while you're there! More guests = more funding = better museum. I know, I sound like a shill. No, I'm just really impressed with this place. Hope you are too.

An amazing museum, full of physical displays and explanations about the entire history of the medical corps and U.S army. I could not have stopped walking around, talking photos, reading information and learning. In my opinion, the best thing a museum can cause you is the desire to bring your kids to see it. if that is happening - its probably a great one. Well, that is absolutely the case. Extremely recommended.

What an amazing piece of history not only for our military medical troops but for our country. From the 1st steps in seeing the wall of those troops who were rewarded the medal of honor through the last steps of the museum bringing us into modern history, it is impossible to not be Over com with a sense of pride and honor for our country and the servicemen and women who have served us so selflessly. If you haven't had the opportunity to tour this museum I challenge you to take a couple of hours and tour this piece of history.

Only for US Citizens! - I was very excited to visit the Army Medical Museum, but since I'm not a US citizen (just visiting from Mexico) I wasn't allowed to get a visitor's pass. You can actually get one, but you have to go through a background check that may take some days. I understand and respect why they do this. I just want to warn all non-US citizens so that they don't go out there expecting to be allowed into the Fort.

If you get a chance to go, please do. The museum features great military exibits and wonderful displays. Free to see. There's a few exibits that are still under development so please be respectful. It takes time to make a display that truly honors the folks in that historical event. Wheelchair friendly and mostly AC. Few areas are outside.

My former-medic wife and I wanted to stop here on our honeymoon and there is nothing on the website saying the museum is currently closed to the public. Quite the disappointing discovery after driving several hours across Texas. Calling for more information has also gotten nothing but a ringtone despite the clearly marked operating hours. Most unfortunate.

  • David Ciochetty

A very professional museum showing all facets of military medicine through the historical perspective of the different medical branches. Enjoyed the static outside display of the train car and medical helicopters. I was able to find all my assignments at the display of unit crests. Wish it could be larger to show more memorabilia.

  • Tim the Hermit

Very nice layout for this Musuem that honors all the brave men and women of the US Armed Forces, particularly the medics. The climate controlled indoor sections are organized chronologically, and also don't forget to check the outdoor vehicles (helicopters and an amazing Army Medical Train car!)

  • Justin Rakes

Lots of great displays here from every era of American military medicine. Lots of cool vehicles. Lots of great artifacts. And it's free admission. Thought I would just kill a few hours with the wife and ended up learning a lot and seeing some very interesting history. I highly recommend it.

  • Christine Kolar

Unexpectedly great museum! Lots of different exhibits featuring everything you want to know about Fort Sam Houston's medical background starting with revolutionary war to the present. Don't forget to head out back and check out the authentic army medical train, jeeps, and helicopters!!

If you're a fan of history, military, medicine, or any combination this is an awesome find. It's free to get in, and the folks that work there have an outstanding knowledge of what's there. They provided my wife and I with answers to all of our questions and added valuable insights.

  • Tom Lutes

Definitely a trustworthy institution to exhibit and educate the history of the Army Medical Department. I went to the museum twice and kept learning both times. It's well organized, driven to improve and evolve, all while serving the legacy of AMEDD.

  • Johnny Delgado

The museum is gigantic, you can easily spend a whole morning in there. Inside and outside things to see! Very well organized and well kept! The people who work there 90 are veterans! They'll know a lot about the place and have stories to share!

  • Kyle Whittier

Very interesting. Assumed this was a small stop to see some historic equipment, but proved to be a timeline thru US army medical history. Very engaging and interesting. See if you can find the early 20th century Equine Dental field kit …

  • Donald “Don” Hoffmann

A great military museum! There is a lot of history displayed here, from the 1800’s to today. I have a lot of respect for the military members in the medical field. This museum is dedicated to them and the tools they use.

Great place for real history. Takes about an hour and a half to really look around and get the full experience. Great for U.S. Army medics and any service members really. Check it out, you won't be disappointed.
