my partner and I decided to come to this cafe for brunch, and we were not disappointed! This cozy little cafe is tucked in the middle of Mathers Lane. It’s not noticeable if you’re driving on Liverpool St, but if you’re taking a stroll in the city, you might notice it. We sat down, expecting typical brunch food, Eggs Benedict, eggs on toast, etc. The menu wasn’t big, but there’s food you’d never expect to go well together! The last page of the menu showed sweet & savoury waffles. My partner and i decided to try something different, and he ordered the eggs benedict waffles, and i ordered smoked salmon & capers-filled waffles. It was amazing! We were pleasantly surprised about how well waffles go with savoury breakfast dishes. I highly recommend the smoked salmon & capers waffles, it’s something different from usual breakfast/brunch food, yet surprisingly tasty. There is table service & the waitress takes your order at your table. The coffee is delicious and the food did not take long to arrive at all!

Really kind staff members, excellent coffee, hot chocolate and delicious freshly made (on-site) desserts! Delicious home-made baked beans and well- presented food. Fantastic range of both vegan and vegetarian food and drinks available, including vegetarian and vegan lattes made with Nutri-Organics (Golden latte, velvet latte, mermaid latte, lunar latte). The only negative point is that sometimes there are no more seats available inside when the store is really busy (but luckily take-away is also an option).

Came here for an all day breakfast and boy was I happy and impressed. Firstly I was cheerfully greeted by the counter staff. She made me an amazing coffee and brought me iced water. The poached eggs on sourdough with smoked salmon was Devine. 5 stars to the young girl at the counter who was Multi tasking greeting customers, taking orders and making the coffee and serving the orders to the table too and taking payments for the meals! It's with staff like this and the quality of food which was excellent and even though the place was full not a table to spare my order arrived so fast and I received excellent service.

Found this place by accident really, lovely people, I felt very welcome wandering in wearing orange and reflective clothing as we were working on a construction site nearby, had a great meal and coffee, sent the folks there to try it out, will definitely go back.

No parking directly nearby but if you have mobility issues park on Liverpool St closer to the Myer entrance and it's all flat to the door.

Don't go in the vicinity of this wonderful little cafe without stopping in. The food was delicious. Our savoury waffles with turkey, rocket and kewpie were mouth-watering. And even ignoring the high calibre of the food, the fact that we got a savoury dish for two, a hot drink, an ice cream spider and coffee for a $20 note is incredible. Excellent food for excellent prices. Quiet and comfortable, with polite and friendly staff, don't miss this gem of a cafe. Seriously.

Stellar service. We came here after coming from Berta, we had to leave because of the pretentious and rude service. Enough about that anyhow. We were met with a bubbly waitress, beautiful service and great food. The three things to make an amazing experience. The food was great, we ordered a couple of toasties and an eggs Benedict. All full of flavour and super fresh. Coffee was great too. Strong but smooth.

Amazing coffee! We tried the almond milk latte with hazelnut syrup and it’s the best one we’ve had so far! All the flavours blend in together, not too sweet, just perfect! The oat velvet was a very good vegan alternative to the turmeric latte! Good amount of vegan cakes and sweet snacks available! Seating place outdoor and indoor. Very friendly and nice staff! I recommend

A lovely cafe in downtown Hobart. We had breakfast one day here. On our recent trip we got the avocado toast as well as the ham and cheese toasty along with a cappuccino. Everything was super fresh and delicious and I really enjoyed the coffee as well .

My favourite cafe from our trip to Hobart. Pictured are the Nutella custard waffle, sweet potato waffle, and corn fritters. I was very impressed by the Nutella waffles which weren't too sweet and had a great crispy texture. I would definitely also order the other dishes we had again. I also very much enjoyed the Malabar chai tea which I had never tried before.

Lovely cafe in a nice quiet corner. Seats were kinda cramped for the booth we were located at but other than that, the food was pretty good.

It's the little things that differentiates this cafe from others in Hobart - including: the outstanding food presentation; superb HOT coffee (in a double walled glass to keep it hot); pleasant staff and surrounds AND great tasting food. It's the complete package. My breakfast was perfect and the savory muffin I took away with me for lunch was moist and healthy.

  • Akshay Tickoo

A small, well hidden gem. The service was very friendly and helpful, and we hoped the food would be on the same level, but it was even better. I have no idea how they gave so much to eat, yet it was quite light and very delicious. A definite must go, and we will be planning a return trip soon (but let me work out these calories from the dessert first)....

I cannot express enough how much I love this place. The owners are some of the best people you can meet. The decor is adorable . The food is fantastic and at a very student friendly price! I couldn't recommend it enough to anyone -couples, students or lovers of great food. Public cafe is special, and must be in my top three cafes in Hobart.

Food was beautiful presented, and tasted alright, the eggs were seasoned a bit odd for my taste. I didn't like the vibe of the cafe. It just felt a bit hodgepodge in terms of the interior. The staff was superlovely, and saved the experience for me! If you're looking for a simple and good café/coffeeshop experience, this would be fine.

Welcoming and great service. Excellent coffee (served with pure, unadulterated cream!) and delicious, wholesome, real food. Friendly and accommodating staff. Most enjoyable breakfast & every request met with courtesy. Clean and uncluttered. Great find. Somewhere to look forward to returning to when next in Hobart. …

One of the best breakfasts I’ve ever had! We went back the next day because the food was so good! I was shocked with the prices, My wife and I both got coffees and food for $32. The BLT waffle was SOOO GOOD!! If you’re in Hobart don’t waste your time or money anywhere else go to the Picnic Cafe!

This cafe has amazing coffee and amazing savoury waffles. My husband had the savoury waffle with bacon and poached eggs ($13) while I had the smoked salmon savoury waffle ($10). It was delicious and so cheap, we are foodie from Sydney and we highly recommend this place.

Our first brekkie in tassie and it was perfect. Superb quality of ingredients - no nasties, real maple syrup, fresh berries, sweet dishes not overly sweet... I could go on. Coffee was decent too. Highly recommend

Brilliant little cafe serving a wide range of meal and beverage options. We especially enjoyed the waffle breakfast options, very tasty and beautifully presented. Get yourself down the end of Mathers Lane for an enjoyable breakfast, morning tea or lunch.

  • Blockhead

Great service with delicious food and coffee at the actual price they should be! Everything is house made including the pastries which makes for a nice change from the factory pastries at so many cafes. Very impressed, a lot of love goes into this place

The waffles are so good here. I can't wait to come here and have the waffles again. The coffee was also nice. My wife still talks about this place. The coffee was also quite nice. Keep up the good stuff, I hope it's as good when I return on a holiday.

An unassuming little cafe tucked away behind Criterion St. I was so excited about there being both savoury and sweet vegan waffle options that I couldn’t resist ordering both, and didn’t regret it! All the staff were lovely and very accommodating.

  • Abigail Celestino

Small cafe but good coffee. Tried the savory pancake option, did not disappoint. Eggs benny was made so nice, egg yolk is dark and orangey, can tell they use very fresh ingredients. Attentive staff for a super early Monday visit from us at 7am!
