I took my wife out for breakfast for our first taste of Criterion Street Cafe! Your establishment is highly recommended by everyone I ask. The place was pumping and the servers were doing an admirable job of helping everyone. I ordered the French toast (which was exceptional) and my wife ordered the mushroom special. About 3/4 of the way through the mushrooms my wife pulled a medium-length, coarse, black hair out of the mushroom mix. We've both worked in hospitality and understand these things happen. So, we tried to inform the waiter in a circumspect manner. He was duely apologetic and offered to rectify the issue. He offered to remove the meal from our bill, but we were happy just taking off the coffees as the food was great. When we went to pay, who we assume was the manager on duty (taking payments and working the coffee machine) insinuated that we may have put the hair in the food ourselves as 'everyone in the kitchen is blonde'. She had dark hair, there was a guy with dark hair, and another lady who was serving with shorter dark hair. She then stated that '... But I guess we can take care of the meal,' as if she was doing us a favour (when we already offered to pay for it). In all, it seemed very poorly handled by her, and exceptionally rude considering the situation. Upon speaking with other locals, it seems this person is the owner and has treated other similarly.

Very close to the city and some really good brunch options available. I tried the Lamb Sandwich and it was delicious. Hopefully I will try more next time. They are a 2-story restaurant/cafe and the second floor (first floor in Australia) is where you can sit, work, and/or meet people. Limited electric outlets so don’t rely on the power just in case. Staff is good and they help you in deciding which food to order.

Excellent food. Friendly staff. Nice layout with plenty of ambience and local flyers and advertisements to feel like this place is well connected to the community it resides in. It was bustling at midday, but the staff were on top of it and not at all over-whelmed -- remaining bubble and delightful despite the obvious lunch rush. It was obviously a destination for many CBD workers as well as wanderers and local live-abouts. The price was slightly high, but not high for the quality and service. I'll be going back regularly!

There are at least three vegetarian dishes on the menu I saw and it appeared very much that they would listen to possible augmentations one might request of other dishes.

The food is okay but the service is appalling especially the middle aged waitresse. It is difficult to comprehend and understand what she says as she speaks very fast and abruptly. She was extremely rude, loud and aggressive with her demeanor and service and it felt like we were some school aged children being told off and corrected by the principal. After this experience on multiple occasions I would not recommended anyone to attend this cafe. The cafe really needs to review their internal service policies and perhaps undertake some training in hospitality and customer service to warmly, effectively and respectfully treat their customers.

Just went into this Cafe this morning and was not impressed. I was served by a very rude unkept middle aged woman with an equally aggressive personality as if she was a police officer or something. Haven't been treated like I was since grade school which took me by surprise to be honest in a Hobart Cafe. Definitely a no go if they have such a piece at the helm of their business. Perhaps the business owner with an inflated ego but I am not sure, either way definitely recommend a nicer atmosphere for your morning coffee experience.

Very fast service and tasty coffee ... they offered me sugar in my Mocha, so clearly thought I wasn't already sweet enough ... I'll take that as a compliment Really nice little inner city cafe with inside and outside tables, plus a relaxed & friendly vibe. Will definitely stick my nose in again to sample the eats when I'm in the area again. Thank you Criterion St Cafe for a delicious (and sweet enough) coffee ☕️

This cafe was very busy but efficient and friendly. We have never been here before but we were so glad to have a lovely breakfast cheerfully serve in a quaint place. We had porridge with berry crumble …. Oh so yummy. The best coffee we have had so far!! We are coming back tomorrow to try something else delicious. Thank you so much

I was given a dirty plate and dirty spoon (already used) with my drink, my partners drink was wrong order and tasted horrible. When I asked someone who worked there to take away the plate they just left (I think maybe just very busy) Food was average On a good note, the eggs were very well poached, so silver lining. Sorry guys!

Came here to write a piece for a Hobart feature in a NSW coffee/brunch column I write for as recommended by a local friend. Unfortunately didn’t get that far. Terrible hospitality. There were three available bar seats inside and we were told we could only sit outside as using those seats would make the cafe too squished? Meanwhile lots of singular people sitting alone or on laptops. Went around the corner to Dandy Lane where business was welcomed.

Without doubt the best steak sandwich in Australia… great bread and pulled lamb… if there is such a thing… had to go to counter and give compliments to the chef Great atmosphere… busy friendly attentive staff .. this is obviously very much loved by locals… I’d say it should be on a must do If you want breakfast or lunch in Hobart

We ordered takeaway for 8 people including coffees. The food was healthy, fresh and delicious and the coffees were great too. The lady who served us didn’t miss a beat and all staff were friendly and accommodating. The vibe was also super welcoming with lots of greenery and nice street side seating in the sun. We highly recommend and will be back!

Honestly, pretty expensive for the portion sizes and food. Got the scrambled eggs on toast with bacon that came out to $20 had 1 piece if toast and a tiny tiny peice of bacon that cost $6 itself. The juice was somewhere between $6-$8 and was tiny but nice flavour. Eggs could’ve used some more flavour as they were quite bland and sloopy.

Cracking breakfast stop in Hobart! I had the porridge and toast with Vegemite and my wife had poached eggs with toast. Porridge was fantastic with a lovely dollop of apple and berry crumble to stir in! Coffee was smooth and just lovely to wake us up for another day on our vacation here in Tassie. The energy in the staff is just palpable and the music adds to the vibe. This is a great place to start your day!!!

  • Jo Skinner

What a lovely cafe! The warm porridge, on a cold winters day, was the perfect antidote to the weather. Lovely staff, central location. Can’t recommend it enough. We ate the porridge before we had time to take a photo.

Went into the cafe for breakfast. Had a pot of lemon and ginger tea and bacon and eggs on toast. Bacon was superb and the eggs cooked well. I would have preferred it on a bun but the sourdough toast was nice. Would definately go back there for breakfast again. Staff were super friendly.

Great food, just a shame that our 4 year old son found it tricky to dine with us because he ‘couldn’t sit still enough’ when curious to look at some of the indoor plants. Would not recommend for anyone with young children - especially as toys are scattered around the place but children told not to touch them.

My favourite breakfast and lunch cafe in Hobart. The menu is not that long but every dish is a winner, classy but not pretentious. We had eggs benny with bacon and savoury French toast. Everything was excellent plus really good coffee. Great attentive service and the place runs like a well-oiled machine. What's not to love?

I received a wonderful meal. Perfect eggs plenty of bacon however could've had more toast. The issue comes with the consistency. My eggs were good but then one of my friends received two hard boiled eggs instead of poached and another got a perfect egg and a softboiled egg. Service was excellent though so I'd still recommend.

  • Glen Pearce

The sourdough bread was the highlight, I believe it was from Pigeon Hole. For $4.50 for a side (half of a small avocado), it would have been nice to have a slice of lemon or something a bit fancier with it. We are eating out at a cafe after all. There was nothing special about the food. The cappuccino was a bit milky for me.

Great breakfast this morning at the Criterion Cafe, hidden away in a city side street. The cafe was full (always a good sign) but the service remained great and we had no trouble getting a table. The staff were super friendly with a ‘cheery skater’ vibe. Food and coffee were good and prices fair. We will be back!

Speedy service, massive portions, great value, good coffee and plenty of seating. Why not 5 stars? My poached egg was hard which meant my whole breakfast was a little dry. That's partly my fault given what I ordered so maybe I'm just nitpicking... 4.5 stars? Definitely recommended!

  • Bobby King

I was here two consecutive mornings. The food was great and staff was friendly and helpful - my wife and I ordered one set of breakfast to share, and they even separate it to two plates evenly. ALSO great place also to drink coffee and chill out in the late morning! Can be crowded.
