I am literally shaking as I write this review. As pet owners, our dogs and cats are a part of our family. We love them, care for them, and look after them. I trusted Petco because my previous groomer was okay (not stellar by any means), but it was also convenient for Knox and I. Well on Sunday, that all changed. I brought Knox in on time for his 10:15 am appointment. Upon reaching the desk I noticed all of the poorly written, hand-made signs, the dimly lit store, and it seemed like a scene from a horror movie. I should've taken the poor upkeep of the store as a tell-tale sign that my appointment would be traumatizing, but I tried not to judge. When I got the the front, I noticed that there was a groomer that I had never met before. She asked for updated vaccinations, I provided them, and then proceeded to tell her about my dog. She mentioned that she was new to grooming and that was scary for me because Knox was in between appointments. I gaged her comfort with the appointment and she assured me that all would be well and that my requests would be accommodated. This couldn't be further from the truth. I stay during the appointment and this time I'm glad I did. There were many dogs being brought in and only one groomer, I was concerned by the volume of appointments. However, I was absolutely horrified when I looked into the window and noticed that Knox was barking (he rarely ever barks or is agitated) and he had the leash wrapped twice around his neck. The groomer who I could not see from the window did not acknowledge this, at all. Frantically, I went to the cashier's desk and alarmed them that if they did not handle it, I would myself. I then asked to hold my dog until it was time for his cut after such a close and terrifying call. At around 1:15 p.m. I was told by management that my appointment would be canceled. This was stated due to the stress caused to Knox and myself. There was no apology for nearly killing my dog due to negligence. This was the most awful grooming experience I've ever had. It took Knox all night to recover. He was frightened of me and all humans beyond his appointment. PLEASE DO NOT GO TO THE LOCATION IF YOU LOVE YOUR DOG!

Well, Let's just say, I will NEVER patronize this location. I am a Vital Care Premier member and have been for at least 2 years now. I recently relocated to the DMV from St. Louis where my go-to location was Brentwood, MO. I booked Fancy an appointment at the New York Ave NE location for 8/10 at 10am. Unfortunately, I arrived a little late (10:12am to be exact). When I arrived to the desk, I was reading all the "handwritten" signage the workers put up (there were over 4). I didn't realize the worker was sitting behind the desk due to the signs blocking her. She then said, "hello." I responded "oh you scared me, I didn't see you sitting there." No response, so I said I'm here to drop off Fancy. No response. She then clicked on the computer, got up and went to the back to speak with another groomer. She then came back out, picked up her phone, and walked to the back again, then came back out, walked past me and went outside to smoke a cigarette. The other groomer came out and said "I don't think your groomer will be able to see you today." I asked why and she said she has a 10 minute grace period. I said how, when the sign right here says there is a 15 minute grace period and I arrived at 10:12am, exactly 12 minutes late. She then said that's her grace period she has set. I said so each groomer has a different grace period, instead of it being a store wide thing? She then said she can see fancy tomorrow. I said that's okay, that's not how you do business and asked for the groomer's name and left. So, I say all of this to say, DO NOT patronize Petco on New York Ave NE or Jordan (the groomer). I have been to Alexandria & Forestville here and have not had such a rude experience.

I am writing this review for Petco located on New York Avenue NE. My review for this Petco is based on an experience I hope any pet owner will not have to go through. A few weeks ago I adopted a 3 year old husky from a local animal shelter and went to Petco to purchase my first crate, dog food, and a six week behavior course. The staff was extremely helpful and friendly in this first visit. Shortly into my ownership of this husky, he attacked me over food unrelentingly for 30 minutes until animal control had to be called. Unfortunately this attack lead to a trip to the hospital for me and our dog to be kept back in his original shelter. My family and I were devastated after forming a connection with him in the first few weeks of owning him, but due to our living circumstances and the amount of people the dog would be exposed to, we had no option but to release the dog back to the shelter. This Petco, and particularly employee Ashley, were nothing but compassionate and understanding after hearing about this unfortunate circumstance. Not only did they refund me for the lessons that I no longer had a use for, but I legitimately felt better after speaking to Ashley both over the phone and in person. The support and kindness she showed me and my family was inspiring and serve as a powerful indication of the type of people who work at this store. Thank you Ashley and Petco for your service to us.

This is the most unprofessional Petco location that I’ve ever been to. I wish there was a negative star option because I would give them -10 if I could. The staff is beyond rude and they are not helpful at all, nor do they care about customer service. The groomers are subpar at best and they weren’t even capable of completing a hair cut on a 6 pound dog. They made me come back a week later bc an inexperienced groomer couldn’t finish a haircut and they tried double charge me. That is not customer service. If an associate cannot do the job, you get another associate to finish the job, but you should not double charge for something you couldn’t finish. That’s a training issue that Petco needs to address. On top of that they tried to say my dog was difficult. I have been with Petco for at least a decade and have NEVER had any groomer say that to me. But beyond that, isn’t Petco a pet store? Isn’t this what you do? You’re supposed to be able to deal with dogs. It’s your only job! You have one job and you fail miserably at it! WARNING!!- Do not waste your time or money coming to this location. Try Dogtopia or even Petsmart. It’s a much better experience. I will NEVER return to this location.

The worst PetCo grooming I have ever been. Recently moved to DC, I used to go PetCo grooming in other town. My dog always got a feedback card says he behaves relaxed and happy. This one, make sure you stay there and watch them grooming your puppy. Because I didn’t stay there and watch, which I regret I had done so. My dog was so upset when I pick him up after 4 hours. Yep, 4 hours didn’t receive any phone call or text says he is ready until I called them. Because they put my paperwork at the wrong place. Okay, the above is just a small mistake that made my dog waited for me for 4 hours( poor baby :( ). It is understandable for me. What made me so angry is, the grooming is terrible. My dogs eyes are not cleaned. Fur was not cut evenly. Looks as the same as I sent him there. I told them not to cut the hair above my dogs nose and between eyes, because I want them to grow longer. That way I could braid it then it doesn’t cover my dogs eyes anymore. But the did, and left other parts of the head undone. Excuse me??? I just don’t understand. 4 hours, and my upset puppy, and the ugly looking( I redid it and he looks much better). Don’t go there for grooming unless you could stay and watch.

Horrible experience. The groomer (Ranisha) called and asked us to come early for our 2:15 PM appointment. I told her we could come between 1 PM and 1:30 and she said thanks and OK. After the call, I received a text notification that the appointment had been updated to 1:15 PM. We arrived at 1:30 PM but stood in line for about 5 minutes. Upon getting to the counter, we were told that Ranisha was refusing our appointment because it was past the 15 minute grace period for an appointment that SHE requested we move up and that SHE set for 1:15 after I’d already said 1:30 at the latest. The manager Marcus was helpful in a very bare-minimum laissez-faire way. While he did speak to Ranisha, he said that he couldn’t force her to perform the grooming and only offered a partial discount (he didn’t specify how much which lead me to believe it would be small). We won’t be back to this location for grooming.

I gave 4 star because I went to buy a ferret the cage in thr store said one price and when I got to my car to check my receipt. I was charged more then the price on the cage. The man with glasses at the register told me that was the old price but as the consumer I was to pay what you had up in the store. I don't know nor seen anything about a higher price. Acted like he didn't amend the transaction u til I told him I'll file a complaint with the BBB better business bureau because they have to honor what was up in the store. After all that back and forth my daughter got to take home our new family member Dash. He's getting along with my son Bright. Looking forward to adding more to our family but hopefully we won't have another price issue next visit. An they play do well with Chinx our kitten like they're all siblings

On Monday, September 27th, 2021, I took my Yorkshire Terrier Poodle to the Petco on New York Ave in Washington D.C. for a bath and haircut with stylist Kendra H. When I picked him up, he did not smell like he had a bath, and she shaved my puppy 1 inch from bald. I also noticed that he was coughing and choking immediately after leaving. We do not attend dog parks or kennels. I spoke with the manager Bernetta and she informed me that she could not help me. I researched this New York Avenue Washington DC Petco location and found numerous bad reviews mentioning terrible haircuts and animals not being properly bathed. I would like for management to implement extensive training for all grooming staff at this New York Avenue Petco location.

I took my dog in for a grooming at the New York Avenue Washington, DC location (preparing for holiday photos). The groomer was late. When i picked my yorkie up i almost cried. All of his facial hair was gone beard and all....( i text the groomer an exact photo of the cut that i wanted when i dropped him off). My dog did not smell as if he had been bathed and his breath did not smell like he had his teeth brushed. It is so sad when things like this happens. I am a animal lover and i pay close attention to my pets. Anyone looking for a groomer my suggestion would be to by pass Petco grooming and invest in a highly recommended private groomer.

Truly an awful location. After waiting 10 minutes for the cashier to ring out the one person in front of me, while a manager stood nearby breaking down boxes, I was told I was unable to make my online return in store because it was prescription food. The manager, who informed me of such, didn’t even say “oh sorry, you can’t do that here.” He just told me I would have to drive out to Virginia to return it. When I left, I called petco customer care, which somehow managed to handle the entire return process over the phone. Crazy how it could be such a simple process, yet I was made to feel in store like I was an annoyance.

Overall a well-stocked store with friendly staff. Be mindful that in-store prices on many items are as much as 2x ordering from their website and picking up at the very same store (no idea how that logic works), but the staff let me know that they'll price-match any item to the online price. My one niche critique is that their selection of frozen feeder foods is inconsistent. They always have what I need for my cats, but getting appropriately sized food for my snake can be a challenge. This seems to be an issue across the board with Petco, so not really the fault of this store specifically.

I love petco. What I hate about it is the messy and dirty aquariums. Also I hate when employees ask too many questions when buying a fish without thinking the buyer perhaps has better education in marine life than they do. I am a marine life and fish behavior and biology student who studies fish and their lives. I know what kind of fish what kind of environment needs. Every time I go to buy a fish the helper starts asking me bunch of unnecessary questions. All they need to ask is “Do you need help or any advice “ rather asking how big is your tank, this fish gets bigger, blah blah blah.

First, they had the product in stocks. Second, parking is in the back in a garage. No thanks. I parked illegally on the side street. Third, couldn't find a staff member nearby to lift some heavy bags. When I did, he seem to have an attitude. I asked where was the RESTROOM. he said it was out of order. However, when I went up to the front to checkout, I heard a staff member say someone was in the bathroom Lol..Lastly, the checkout guy was very nice and professional. He was kind enough to put the heavy bags in the car with a SMILE AND HAVE A GOOD DAY...

This Petco's grooming was HORRIBLE!!! Stay away. I went to pick up my dog (a miniature schnauzer) and he was still dirty, the hair cut was done with uneven scissors all through his body and face, as if it was done by someone with NO EXPERIENCE. Therefore, DO NOT TAKE YOUR DOG HERE, EVER!!! Even though they offered a full refund, it does not repair the horrible haircut and going to pick your dog to find him in such conditions.

My Daughter-in-law went to purchase a fish and tank for her elementary classroom/students. I did not go in. She returned with both items, fish food, and water treatment. The wait was extremely quick--the store must have been well-staffed with knowledgeable salespersons. I thought +$20 for a single Betta fish was ridiculous, but I'm unaware of pricing. I do know I could have feed salmon to a family of four for less...

I had a wonderful experience here yesterday thanks to Ryan and Tracy!!!! Ryan helped me with my fish selections and was very knowledgeable. I came in looking for one or two fish I ended up leaving with 9!!!! He was was extremely patient and answered each and every question that I had. As a customer I felt very valued and felt the need to express and share my positive experience. Thanks Again!!!

I have been to multiple groomers before this, but never have I had such a wonderful experience. The groomer Lesly treated my pup as if she were her own. Normally my dog can be a handful, but with Lesly it was like she had known her for years. My dog was cleaned and clipped in no time and she didn't miss a spot! Would definitely recommend for any other pet owner, I'll be sure to come back!

I bought a chemical for my aquarium, got home opened it and saw rust on the lid and seal, and the liquid was brown amd murky (supposed to be clear)full of rust and had a foul odor. Was told I couldn't return due to covid-19.its not like I was returning an item that could be placed back on the shelf and be resolved, I wanted me money back for deadly chemical that needed to be disposed of

Made a grooming appointment a month and a half ago. Showed up for the appointment, waited 30 minutes, just for the groomers to tell me no one felt comfortable to do a cut on my breed of dog. They were very nice about it and I appreciate them telling me rather than just trying, but it would have wasted a lot leas if my time to be informed of that when I first made the appointment.

Do NOT come here for grooming services. My hound mix came today for just a bath and nail clipping, left with a large cut on the back of her leg and was told they had no idea where it came from. Now need to go to the vet to get it checked out, which they agreed to cover the costs for. My pup and I will no longer be NY Ave customers after this serious issue.

A little dodgy of a place. Came here about 45 minutes before close and all the employees were huddled up in the back entertained in something. It was difficult to get anyone to help with buying questions, and took forever until someone walked up to the checkout when I needed to pay. The store is otherwise clean, and animals look well taken care of.

MISLEADING EMAIL COUPONS: Got an email coupon for 20% off $60 or more for online or in store pickup. Went in and had $103 of merchandise only to be told i could only get the 20% off if i ordered online and “picked up” in store. The cashier refused to extend the coupon savings to me - which would have been about $20!! Totally recommend Petsmart !

I only gave 4 because they only carry the 3 packs of frozen pinky mice and fuzzy i got 2 pinky pks and 1 fuzzy pk total 19.97 vs up town they sell the 50 packs... Now online the 50 pk is $16 and some ¢ but to get them shipped it's $40 …

I've been coming to this store for over 5 years and I have never had a complaint. The staff is always great and my dog Tide loves this store. I'm a happy dog mom because of your staff. the grooming was terrible and they did not brush my dog’s teeth, cut his nails, or bathe him like the staff said they would. he has cuts all around his belly and his nipple was cut up. his body was shaved way shorter than asked for and his head was not even trimmed. please do not send your animal here

Aquarium gear is fine. Very convenient to just pick this stuff up with free parking and good hours. Most staff helpful. Over time, the live stuff I have bought: two shrimp, snail, four plants, and a fish are all still alive, but dropping a star because there are a few too many floaters in the tanks.

Asked for a trim around the legs and back end, but our dog ended up with a shaved stomach and butt. Didn’t see the stomach until we had left the store already - obvious hack job with clippers that shouldn’t have been used in the first place. Nothing is straight or even, totally choppy.

A full-size Petco in DC, offers all the services that a suburban Petco would. For grooming Shea(sp?) is great with dogs, did an excellent job calming and trimming our dog's nails. Staff is helpful and the store is well-stocked...don't think many people know about yet.

We’re not pet owners, but stopped in to but a gift for our neighbor’s dog. The space is big with everything you’d want from toys to biscuits to anything! They have a pet grooming station, a dog biscuit bar and sell small pets like fish, hamsters, birds and snakes!

This was a new location on New York Ave. The store was well stocked, you can bring your pets. The staff were very friendly and helpful. I was able to find everything I needed in a few minutes, that gave me more time to just shop around. Great store.

Parking is limited, unless you want to park in the parking garage. However staff here is efficient. They had Merrick dog food & Canidae dry dog food as well. They require masks inside, which is greatly appreciated. The store is well stocked & tidy.

Horrible grooming. We asked for a trim and our dog was nearly bald except around her head and neck where the fur is completely uneven. My dog is usually groomed at the Columbia Heights Petco and we have always had an excellent experience.
