UPDATE: today 9/05/2022, Howl to the Chief just responded to this review posted on 3/18/2022. The response is not valid or accurate at all. The order was never delivered that day. We had to call twice it wasn’t delivered until the next day We placed a delivery order yesterday afternoon Fri 3/18. We were called shortly after to be informed the Howl to the Chief was sold out of items in our order. We provided alternative item requests. Today Sat 3/19 @5:15pm, we are still without our order for Frozen Perishable items. We called the store to inquire if the order status. Both the staff were sarcastic and combative. They immediately cut us off and instructed us to refer to the text message sent by the third party company used. We explained that we did not receive said text message . Instead of being helpful they began to say that it should have been sent yesterday when the order was picked up. We reiterated that we never received a text message and it was never delivered. We then asked the protocol of what happens when the orders picked up and not delivered the same day as part of the order was frozen perishable. They then stated there was nothing they could do but try to reach out. We stated our frustration as this was over $60 spent on dog food that was not received. They then said it was picked up today at 2pm (contradicting of earlier statement). We asked that they call the third party company and update us with an order status, only to be hung up on by howl to the chief. I called back shortly after to inquire if they had called the third party company and they said, they did but no one answered. After 3 years of being loyal customers, This is the last time will ever shop here again!

Not entirely sure who DeeDee is or their role at this location, however they are rude and not helpful what so ever. I called to inquire about an online order I placed a day ago(I know about the 24 hour rule) when I asked if they knew where my order was DeeDee acted like how dare I call to ask such a question and once the 3rd party delivery service picks it up, it’s out of their hands. They huffed and puffed on the phone like it was my fault and they acted annoyed by my question. They then told me it was picked up the day before and then said it was picked up this afternoon. I mentioned it was perishable (frozen food) and DeeDee said “well we had it in the freezer” while I understand this, when I call to ask what the status of the order is and I’m treated as if I’m bothering you and not given any sort of solution, that’s what bothers me. I have shopped at this store for the last 3 years I’ve lived here I have never had this level of terrible service here and I know you may not miss my business but I’ll be going else where from now on. You can thank DeeDee for that

I won't say this place is bad but I did not have good experience with the ppl who work there . So I was working with these ppl for almost 3 years pet seating dog and help them to get forever home. One day we pet seat a great dog and we wanted to adopted her, the organization said ohh we can't not. However they end up giving her to other family that they asked then after we said we want to adopted her. We love dogs and all animals and want to help as much as we can . Now we are not part of that organization bc they said we don't want you guys to pet seating our dogs.

This store is predominantly for dogs. Their cat section is very small. They dont carry the same brands for their cats as they do dogs, which I specifically went in for and their pricing is much higher than what I have paid else where once we finally figured out what the price would be since it didn’t have a price tag and wasn’t even loaded in their system as it was delivered on accident. —- Added a star for the response from owner was kind and thoughtful and it appears I must have just hit an off day, and we are all allowed an off day.

Gil did such a lovely job on my dog's groom! We have been to so many groomers and our last few experienced in DC have not been great. I'm so glad we came here. I showed Gil a photo of how I wanted my dog groomed and he told me he would be ready in a few hours. Gil was true to his word and my dog was ready very quickly! Truman looks so wonderful and seemed happy when I picked him up. The prices were very fair and comparable to other groomers. Gil did a great job. We will definitely be back!

I started going to Howl to the Chief when I started working in Navy Yard and I love being able to support a small local business with friendly staff and a great selection of dog foods for my old lady dog. They have a lot of cat things as well! Lots of really cute toys and other cat/dog sundries as well. There new store space is so spacious and really speaks to my much larger personal bubble I have these days

This cute pet shop is a staple of Eastern Market//Barracks Row and really seems to have stood the test of time. They host adoptions many weekends, and though their prices are a touch higher than "main chain" pet stores, the staff really get to know your pets, make fantastic recommendations, and are very well informed of the origin and ethics of their products. Overall, a fantastic little spot.

I used to come here for my hound and the staff was always kind and had a good inventory of healthy food foods. Ended up adopting another dog through this store's partnership with Rural Dog Rescue and now have another pup to make my life wonderful. The owner helped set up pick up of the pup and have always enjoyed stopping in for food and grooming products.

We've been going here for several years for cat supplies. As a small business owner Kim, is very involved in making sure her customers have what they need. She has helped on numerous occasions with recommendations for our kitty with sensitive digestive issues to include samples to try. She also added Dr Elsey's to her cat litter inventory when we asked.

  • Tyler Cloud

The staff are kind and helpful. I do wish they know more about some of the products they carry, but this shop has exactly what I need. Quality dog food, quality treats. Every dog that has been in there, when I and my little dog have been, has been incredibly well behaved. I enjoy going here and Monsignor does as well!

We're getting a dog in the spring and we're just a little too excited, so we had to pop into Howl to the Chief. They were beyond friendly and welcoming, and we loved chatting with them about our incoming puppy. We can't wait to be a regular customer once our puppy arrives!

Do not purchase this dog holder from howl to the chief. This has cost me thousands in medical bills from a herniated disc as a result of using this to carry my pup which is no more than 20 lbs. it looks to be home made it is roughly $60 and

Locally owned pet store heavily involved with local rescues. We love a lot of the treats and toys you can't get from the chains. We adopted our dog Bradley through Rural Dog Rescue which is affiliated with the store as well.

  • Mr Gunny

We adopted both of our dogs from Rural Dog Rescue that holds weekly adoption events here. Staff is great and knowledgeable of the products they sell. On top of all that, walk in nail trimmings and self serve dog washing.

  • George Leonard

The shop has everything I need from training to pampering. The staff is very knowledgeable about a wide range of dog items. If they don't know they will help you find out. The selfbath downstairs is nice and private!

The recently moved to another location also in barracks row. they have a ton of brands including the more popular ones like taste of the wild but also more upscale, fancier one like orjien. Very friendly staff too

  • Alison

HTTC carries big bags of the brand of food that I feed my cats and employs a friendly, knowledgeable staff. It is my favorite local pet shop. Also, it has a ton of dog items, if you need that sort of thing....

All sorts of goodies for your animal pals abound. The staff is great and very helpful. Love the name, as it's perfect for D.C. Not too far from the Eastern Market metro stop, so if you have a pet, try it out!

I live to come here and spoil my pups! They have a great selection - especially love the treats, primal goat milk, and Suzies CBD! This is the place to go to get a step up on your dogs nutrition!
