This is one of the best local bookstores I got to visit while travelling in Montreal. It's the oldest english book store in Montreal in the area. I was able to chat with one of the owners and he was very knowledgable on a variety of topics: from providing great recommendations of science fiction and fantasy, to knowing about different translations and releases of the same text, to having a feature of Japanese authors and translated novels. At the time of this review there was also a neat shelf of Montreal authors also being featured in the store. The owners try and show case a collection of books that they are very passionate about and try to represent a diverse selection of authors. If the book is not in stock they can order a book in with their normal order day (Mondays) and get a book within a week or two. For the locals there are regular events at the space (such as book clubs) that get held at the space. There is also a working/lounge space available to sit at if you want a quiet area to work at. As an avid reader and traveller I like taking the time to support local book stores and this was one of my highlights visiting the city.

Alright, y'all. Let me tell you about Argo books. We are all in isolation. We all need to be inside by 8. We all need to maintain 10 book lengths from another human. Its the new pandemic-normal. So obviously this is the perfect time to catch up on your never-ending reading list. Right? But... nothing is open, you say, how do the people get the books? Well. Has Argo got you covered, friends. I special ordered a book from them, it arrived in the time listed on their site and I received an email to let me know it arrived safely and would be out for delivery (and when). So. I was expecting a non-personal kind of delivery but y'all. No. This was a bookish dude FROM ARGO hand delivering my book with the utmost care. ♡ This is honestly one of the best book shops in Montreal. Amazing service. Local shop. Obviously they care deeply for books. Buy you pandemi-reads here. You'll have 0 regrets.

What a charming locally owned bookstore. We are visiting from out of town and came across Argo because they are hosting a book reading (something they seem to do regularly). I personally loved the wall of staff recommendations with thoughtfully written notes to accompany each book. One of the owners was manning the cash register and give us more detail on his recommendation when we asked. Seems like the perfect place for someone to spend some time solo browsing. Hope to visit again.

I can see why the reviews are so good. Sitting 3200 miles away in London I needed to order a book, gift wrapped with a personal note for a client. Not only did the Argo team to go out of there way to locate the book but they made the whole experience easy and delivered to the clients location. With online payment options you would be CRAZY to order from Amazon when a service like this exists. As a generally hard to please customer I am impressed.

Brilliant little independent bookstore. Very sympathetic co-owners and a great community around it. They regularly hold various events every week, including readings, book club discussions, open mic nights, etc. One of the owners has studied Japanese literature; they always have a good stock of Japanese books (fiction and nonfiction translated to English, a few Japanese language ones), in addition to a great spec fi (fantasy and sci-fi) section.

I ordered online for some books that have been impossible to find elsewhere, even the "big name" places. I made two different orders far apart in time, but since my first order was still processing, they were able to bundle all of my books together for delivery. Great service, I'll definitely be shopping here again! Looking forward to browsing when the shop is reopen for more than curbside pickup!

Cute bookstore, however I don’t understand the good comments about the service None of the sellers answered me when I said “hi” when I arrived, they barely looked at me actually. They didn’t ask me if I needed help (we were only two customers) and I didn’t have any goodbye either. I felt I was wearing an invisible cape, good job

Nice independent bookstore in a good location. If you are like me and remember them being a used book store this has changed. I was told they started selling new books years ago. Based on their size they have a really good selection of diverse books. The staff is also really helpful. Great location for your English book needs.

  • Alanna Silver

Very cute local book shop near Concordia. The space was small but the shelves were packed and they had a very good selection of books. The employees were super helpful and friendly. If you're an anglophone looking for a good english book to read, head here. I only wish I had discovered this place sooner!

As a Concordia student, I found this store on a whim after my class ended. Now, I go almost every week and most times, I bring a book home with me. The staff is extremely nice and though the bookstore might be small, there are plenty of books to choose from. Also, Willy the dog is an added bonus.

  • Maria Miland Elmvang

Charming store and super friendly staff - very knowledgeable of their stock and always ready to make recommendations :-D Though the store is small, they had an awesome selection, and clearly hosted a lot of neighbourhood events as well. I wish I lived close enough to participate in them!

Used to like this place... Then they started forcing masks to get in... in full post covid (june 2023). Stop promoting pollution and stop forcing a bad experience on your costumers. Will probably just go and order from Indigo or find another bookstore to spend my time at

  • Jenn C

Cute, carefully selected books. Im not big on reading, but I got so excited when I found this hidden gem. So many good finds about topics that are actually important and relevant to today's societal issues. Yayyyyy. Also, they support so many local writers! Love that.

  • Trevor Nicholson

A really impressive, diverse selection of books. I went for a browse but didn't buy anything because it was raining outside and didn't want to get my books wet, but I'll be back because they had a lot of really interesting books I haven't seen anywhere else.

  • allan lumba

Always been nice to me, my partner, and little toddler. Great little place for kids books, and one of the few places that have boundary pushing intellectual work in critical ethnic studies and queer studies. Big respect for requiring masks.

  • Janice Chau

Cute bookstore that's easier to order from than I expected given its size. Good customer service. They don't carry a wide selection compared to chains but the wait isn't long for special orders. It's a nice spot in the middle of downtown.

  • Pat Sheehan

We really wish the info about this place was fully updated for online searches. We had expected a huge used bookstore and instead found a tiny room with (nicely displayed/selected) titles squeezed beside a hair salon. Very disappointed.

  • Tiye Traore

Cutest little book shop. I asked for a recommendation for what I was in the mood for and they gave me a few books to go through. The book I ended up grabbing was amazing. Very pleased with the service. Will definitely be back!

  • P.A. Spaniel

I attended a few local events hosted here over the years, cool. Then more recently searching for a hard to find book I tried calling them, and they were so helpful beyond all other stores combined that I had tried. Recommend.

  • Haritos Kavallos

Cute little bookstore in the heart of Montreal. I always pop in when I’m walking by to have a glance at their great little collection. They also host book clubs and other small events that are worth checking out :)

  • Kasia S

The curation at this bookshop is unreal. Their selection is varied and the staff are super friendly. I get most of my books second-hand but I can't resist coming here for first-hand books on a regular basis!!

  • Josh Koehn

It's a nice place, though small. It is NO Longer a used bookstore, but there are a few used books among the new tomes. The owners are quite friendly, willing to search for certain reads I inquired about....

  • Fox Lightman

The most contradictory bookstore I've even visited philosophy section looks like it was made to not leave antibody calm. Never have I ever seen Deridda next to book about Jesus followed by Foucault.

  • Henry Styron

Excellent and conscientious service. Loved the communication. When they didn't have what I wanted in stock, they made some thoughtful suggestions. Definitely going to be shopping there again.

  • Aline P

Disappointed that they don’t have books in French or would order one for me to pick up, but still the lady in the store was nice and polite. Next book I’ll read in English, I’ll go there.

  • Jay Countaway

Cozy book shop with small (but impeccable!) selection of fiction and non-fiction books. There’s lots of queer and feminist selections as well! Will visit here whenever I come to MTL :)

  • Tristan Stewart

Great staff, highly recommend. Been ordering books through them online, pickup in store. Takes a week or so to areive, but cheaper than A*zon and feels good supporting local.

  • R

Quaint, cute, very nice selection, and there are handwritten notes for many of the books describing why they’re being recommended! Any English reader will enjoy this place.
