It was overly crowded, train ride was closed for construction, price of the food and gift shops was overly expensive, no vegan options for food, (except pretzels and tea), and the enclosures for most of the animals are too small. Crocodile looked depressed AF in that tiny pool. A lot of the animals weren't even there (tortoises, wolves, foxes, and some other animals). However, I'm happy that the Giraffes & Bears have decent sized enclosures. Also free that poor Magpie.... he was better off as that person's pet than being unable to fly in that tiny cage.... I'm glad that the elephants are being located to a bigger elephant herd with more room... also, the leopard was pacing back and forth a lot... poor guy doesn't have much room to be a cat. Tigers and lions were napping when we were there. This zoo is still a million times better and more ethical than the horrible and disgusting Lagoon "zoo" train ride.... at least the animals are the Hogle Zoo have some natural terrain and aren't forced into a tiny concrete 100 square foot box... On a good note, the dog show was amazing at 3pm. That made the trip to the zoo worth it. Spice & Jason were such cute dogs. (Also the other dogs too, but I forgot their names.) Also, the zoo is a great place to get a leg workout lol... Lots of steep hills and very hot weather. It was great to get my steps in. Some of the picnic areas and the bridge were very beautiful with all the greenery. I also loved the rushing river and waterfall.

What a great zoo! It's on the small side but still has lots of larger animals - bears, big cats, rhinos, elephants, and giraffes. It takes some wandering to see everything. The entrance is at the top and the rest of the park is downhill to the right with a portion higher up on the other side of a creek. I might recommend skirting the African Savannah to do the back path first and down to the Asian animals, make sure to hit the small animal building, then towards the street and the bears & seals, then work your way back uphill. Or, structure your day around the day's keeper talks - I managed to just miss all of them! The seal & sea lion training would have been great to see. The train wasn't going during my visit and they are constructing a new "wild Utah" area that the train will circle, so that looks like it will be really nice when it opens. There's a fun carousel that costs $3 per ride and plays pop music (like "you spin me right round baby") and a decent cafe with friendly staff, though there are plenty of better places to eat outside the zoo and nearby. The gift shop is large and fun, in all, it's a great experience!

I didn't have the best time. I love zoos but this one was lacking. Other reviews say they spent hours here. We got in and out in less than 40 minutes and we saw every exhibit. Most of the animals were asleep or not available. The train is under construction. The food establishments only two were open and didn't have much of a selection of items. I think this place maybe great for children to experience but as an adult, with zoo experiences nationwide, it left me wanting more. We were supposed to be able to feed the giraffes according to the website but there was no area which you could do this. Anyway, did get some photos of the wildlife. So it wasn't totally a waste. Cost us $20+ I think it was $24 but we got tickets online and saved a little. Oh I went in September and the two elephants were being relocated with a few weeks of our visit. Not sure if they are getting new ones but they only had two.

I used to love coming to the zoo. Now things have changed. It is overpriced for the experience you get. I appreciate the upgrades they have made regarding animal care but the limited number of animal exhibits is disappointing. They keep sending away favorite animals (hippo, Elephants, etc.) I recently was lucky enough to see the elephants before they left at a boo lights night. Boo lights used to be packed full of fun and a lot of Halloween lights and displays. This year was not good at all. It was just lit-up animal displays and way less Halloween. I am not sure what changed as far as personnel and the decision maker when it comes to these changes but I would advise bringing in someone new who has a better vision for Hogle Zoo and what it can offer to families in the area.

We love the zoo! It is such a great place to come and let everyone burn some energy. We get a season pass and love being able to come and go as we please with our family of kids. You also get a small discount on purchases like food, gifts, etc. Everything is outside except some of the monkeys and the reptiles. Be prepared for the weather of the day. Every spot is stroller/wheel chair friendly and there are only a couple of hills, the rest is mostly flat. You can come early and watch them feed the animals. The holiday events are great and they are open year round. The play areas are great and there are lots of places to stop and sit. You can bring your own food in without issue. Great Friendy staff and good service. Food is decent and the gift shop is super fun. They stopped giving straws and plastic bottles to help protect the animals and the environment!

Still a good zoo for being on the smaller side. Tons of unique animals and for the most part, visible during our visit. It was extremely hot, 100 degrees, so many opted for the shade and just lying around. A nice touch for visitors was the many mist fans spread around the zoo. Few comments: $3 dollars per person for the train is more than it is worth. When it gets renovated, this may be a fair price, until then, charge a $1 or make it free. Outside the first 200 meters on the train, there is nothing to see. The reptile, small animal exhibit was under construction i think. It never explicitly said. For my military people, no discount, however, you can save $2 dollars per person if booked online. Only know this because the lady next to me purchasing tickets was told this by the ticketing employee. Our ticketing girl did not offer up this information to us.

  • Elise McCollister

Disappointed. We went on my birthday and my four year old was SO excited to ride the train. Of course after we pay they tell us the train is down for a year. It broke her heart. Then the carousel was down too. It was not a good day. They should let yoy know before buying tickets that these attractions are closed. We were disappointed not to mention our toddler who wanted to ride the carousel and train SO bad. Won't ever go back to that zoo. Rude employees serving food too. They need a lesson in customer service! UPDATE: Since leaving this review, Seth in guest relations provided my whole family with free zoo admission tickets and carousel tickets. Thank you Seth for making it right! We had a blast this past Friday!

Went on a "slow day" according to lady at ticket gate and it was amazing! You're able to get pretty close to animals with the way they set up thier exhibits. Zoo is on the smaller side but their layout is great, you dont have to walk a long ways between exhibits but nothing feels crammed together either. Right at the entrance they had a sign displaying times and locations of events for the day. Plenty of misting spots to help keep cool on hot days - was about 90F when I went. They do have opportunities to feed animals as well for an extra cost - giraffes and rhinos were options when I went, and there are times of the year they offer elephant feedings as well

We love the zoo! Decided to visit on a weekday after a huge rainstorm. It was perfect because the sun was out but it wasn't too hot. I'm so happy we got to feed the giraffes! What a fun experience, and I recommend it to anyone! It was $5.00 for non-members and $4.00 for members. You each get 3 lettuce leaves, and you get to get up really close to the giraffes while they eat it off your hand. There has been construction going, so the train ride is closed for the year. I'm happy that they added a schedule for feedings and activities around the zoo so you plan your day. Overall, it was a wonderful visit, and most of the animals were out and active!

We always stop at zoos whenever we travel. This has to be close to the best zoo we have ever visited. The zoo was very clean and well cared for. The animals has plenty of room to roam which is not always the case with zoos. It's very disheartening when you see animals in small enclosures but this was not the case here. The animals also had a lot of clean flowing water which you also don't see at every zoo. This zoo was also quite big. When we looked at the website it look small but we where surprised when that was not the case. The Red Panda exhibit was our favorite along with the 2 Harbor Seals and 2 California Sea Lions. We highly recommend that every at this zoo to their to do list when in Salt Lake City.

Having been to the Denver, CO Zoo, I did not expect this zoo to be very good or big, but honestly it blew the Denver Zoo out of the water! It took 3 hours (without children) to see everything in the zoo, and we saw everything! The enclosures were well maintained and clean, and all the animals seemed happy and energetic, which was a compete 180 from the Denver zoo!! We were able to get really close to all the animals (with glass between us) and got several great photos and videos, and all for just $14 for 2 adults!! I would highly recommend the Hogle Zoo if you are in the area, it was an absolute pleasure!!!

I love this zoo & hearing the lions roar. Elephants, giraffes, polar bears, reptiles, and more! The Colobus Monkeys don’t have thumbs. Remember that. The staff & security here are very responsive & very helpful. The parking lot is very safe & secure. The lines are only busy at certain times, mainly the opening of the day. Traffic isn’t bad, but parking can be a bit of a walk on the weekends. Not far though, worse case scenario, you’ll have to park in the overflow across the street. Make sure to take notice of the RATTLESNAKE warning signage. Also, a venomous snake will have cat eyes, non-venomous circular pupils. Venom is injected, poison is ingested. The more you know

  • Melissa Hague (Ginge)

Took a few trips at different times of the year to catch a glimpse of the Polar Bear. What a magnificent creature! Loved the elephants and the opportunity to feed them! A wide variety of animals, lots of water fountains to keep you hydrated during the hot summers. There's lots for the kids to do besides see the animals, there's a carnival ride, a splash pad! Lots of seating in the restaurant area, which is great. It's cool that it overlooks the elephants too! The only bad thing is the gift shop is SO expensive! Other than that, 9/10 would go back!

I absolutely love this zoo! The enclosures are so natural, and the exhibits are well spaced out - they made a great use of the space that they have! There are plenty of activities to do throughout the day as well as training demonstrations and educational programs. All of the staff are incredibly kind and helpful from the guest services attendants, gift shop and concession team members, security staff, and zookeepers. Everyone is willing to stop and answer any questions you may have. This zoo is incredible all around!

The day we visited it was hot so a lot of animals weren't active. There were tons of baby animals which are always cute and fun to watch. We fed the elephant, which is an additional cost, but worth it for the once in a lifetime opportunity. The train wasn't working when we went which was disappointing. The enclosures were decent sized. I liked how they had the giraffes and zebras sharing an enclosure. I definitely recommend trying the pretzel if you go. It was so good. The hamburgers were dry and overpriced.

We arrived 5 minutes before gates opened at 9am. There was plenty of parking and only a few families in the ticket line. We spent over an hour looking at exhibits but we could have easily spent 3 hours if we had spent time at the splash pad, playground, and carousel. We enjoyed the way the zoo was spread out and the life size stone and metal animal figurines placed around the zoo. As we made our way to the exit around 10:30, the zoo was pretty busy and navigating around people was challenging. We're glad we arrived first that morning where we practically had the entire place to ourselves. Recommend going early to beat the crowd.

My family had an awesome time! I haven’t been here since a field trip WAY back when in elementary, now I decided to take my almost 2 year old - he loved it! The entry price seemed very reasonable. It was cloudy and rainy when we went so the animals were more active, there were very few people, and it was much cooler which was great. Everything seemed clean, everyone was friendly, and we just had a good time. The splash pad was also wonderful for that mid-day break. My one complaint may be the food just wasn’t very good, I mean, it’s exactly as expected and tastes like theme park food, which is to say not great.

  • Kylie Schouten

We went for the Halloween Boo lights. Definitely not worth the 50 dollars. We only saw 3 animals and many parts of the zoo were blocked off. And none of the lights near the animals were on. So if there was any animals we couldn’t see them. We didn’t see many of the advertised cool Halloween lights. Also there was supposed to be candy booths. Only saw 3 booths and were given 4 pieces of candy in total. But the staff were very kind and very in character which was fun!

Great weekend activity to tucker out the whole family! You can walk around for hours we went from 10am-1 pm and most of the animals were awake and we even caught a lion feeding and dog show. The food isn't too badly priced either, maybe $9-$10 a person for a burger and kids meals were about $5-$6. The kiddo loved the carousel, brown bears, and lions! It's a little pricy to get it but if you catch a few shows and visit the reptile exhibit it's totally worth it.

For it being the only real Zoo in Salt Lake, it's not too bad. They have done a lot of upgrading over the years and are still working on expanding. There are many educational interactives along the way. The staff is very kind, knowledgeable, and helpful. Consessions are more on the pricey side, but usually worth it. The weekends tend to get pretty busy, but lines move fast. I would recommend making a trip there. My family and I will definitely be back!

Haven't been here since I was in high school, after I graduated I was determined to make sure I took my kid to the zoo whenever I finally became a parent. Well, finally took my son here for his very first trip to the zoo and it was very memorable. He kept looking at the animals and would smile, I am planning on bringing him back again when he gets a bit older. Time was saved when I purchased our tickets online, so that part I highly recommend.

We went to the free day last month and yes it was crowded and yes it was hold...but we still had a fun time. This zoo is the perfect size. Large enough to see a lot of animals in large enclosures, but small enough to be manageable in a day or afternoon. The zoo is well maintained...you can tell they take pride in education of their visitors and their care of the animals The carousel is a fav of the kids and my personal favorite is the seal lion / seal show... As well as the bird show in the summer. I usual avoid free days but this one is too good to pass up.

  • Glory Spurlock

We had a fun time at BooLights! So many activities, and all the lights were gorgeous! The kids loved the wizard maze (we did it twice), the skull matching game, the pirates telling the story of the kraken, the witch giving the kids their spirit animals, and we even happened to see a couple lions still awake! We didn't find any of the scavenger hunt locations though, probably because we got distracted by all the activities!

Fantastic experience! I've never been to a zoo before and this was a great first one. Their Wednesday reduced prices are great ($5 online, &7 in person). I went in winter and a lot of animals were out of their dens and on the heated sidewalks. It unfortunately snowed several inches that morning so a couple of animals were inside, but overall their winter adjustments are very effective. Definitely recommend if you're nearby!

A nice zoo very kidsfriendly. Worth a visit if you are in the area. Recommend to buy tickets beforehand and you save 2 dollars when purchase online. We came around 1pm during the weekend and it was a bit difficult to find a parking spot but we finally did. Parking is free. It was a hot summer day mid August. I would recommend coming earlier. Preferably opening. We were there for 3-4 hours. You won't need to spend longer.

It's definitely a nice little zoo. We enjoyed our time here and spent a solid 3-4 hours here exploring all the exhibits and seeing the animals. Sadly, a good number of the animals were hiding or sleeping, but there is nothing you can do about that. I would recommend checking it out if you are in the area. It was also pretty busy for a weekday. I guess, it is summer so it was expected to see a lot of housewives and kids.

I love a zoo - especially if they have giraffes. The Hogle Zoo is picturesque and lovely to stroll around. I came for the newest baby giraffe, Reyna, and wasn’t disappointed. A staff member nearby was friendly and shared lots of backstory on the giraffes. A few exhibits were closed and experiences for feeding and other only run until Labor Day. I was bummed I couldn’t enjoy the “Boo”Zoo lights. Looks like a fun event.

We really enjoyed our time here at the zoo. I gave it 4 stars instead of five was because it was full of kids on a field trip. I wish there was a way we could of known that schools were shipping in hundreds of kids before we went that day. The second thing was that the train was closed. We we’re hoping to take our baby on it since it was her first time at the zoo. It’s closed until 2024. :/

Love it here been going for years. Twice this year already. Reasonably priced. Talented and friendly staff. Really liked the dog show and the quality of the concessions (great food). They keep the place clean and the animals are respected and are given the appropriate amount of space to live. The animals seem happy and most were active the day we went. They have great viewing points through the exhibits and a nice gift shop. Parking is free! However it IS limited and crowded days are indeed crowded.

  • John Ambrose

The perfect day activity with little kids even when it's packed! It's been a few years since I visited Hogle Zoo and the new renovations are awesome. The Giraffe, Elephant, and bear exhibits are amazing. Now you get close enough to feed the Giraffes and see how long their tongues are. The kids sat and watched the Sea Lions swim around for a good 30 minutes. We also loved the new playground and splash pad! Even though the parking was completely full, the crowds inside the zoo were totally fine.

  • Carlos Francisco Rivera

This is one of the treasured gems of Salt Lake City. The facility is super clean and maintained. The animals all seem to be well cared for and managed. The staff are fairly friendly except for one person who was rude to me today but the team leads seem to be receptive when I reported. The zoo has taken great measures to ensure public safety during the Covid pandemic. I’ve been coming for years and have appreciated coming here now more that I have a toddler. I highly recommend and will be back.

  • Alexis Foust

Love this zoo. So fun, and the new exhibits are excellent. They have an Elephant demonstration at 10:30 and seal and sea lion at 11:00. So fun! Lots of places to get food and snacks in the zoo and lots of places to stop and eat it. The train is $5, and the carousel is $2.50. You can also feed the giraffe for $5. The gift shop is fun with art pained by the animals for sale! Super kid-friendly and family friendly, but you can enjoy as an adult too. The morning is the best time to go.

  • C. M.

The animal exhibits are amazing, splash zone for kids was great to cool off, the chicken tenders were so fresh we thought they came from the zoo, the churros were stale they made.us.fresh ones. It's all good fun, it's still the best we love the zoo! The kids can run and be contained. Lol fitting. Thinking about the membership for the after hours and 21+ events.

This was the first time in over 10 years we had been to Hogle Zoo, and a first for our kids. The zoo itself is great to keep the kids entertained, but not overwhelmed like other zoo's. The food is a little overpriced in my opinion, and not the greatest. But would have been better had there been some adult beverage options. Otherwise we had a great visit.

Really disappointed with this zoo. The birds definitely did not have enough space. I could understand if they were being rehabilitated but the cages were too small for the birds to even open their wings. The bald eagles were in even smaller enclosures. The rhinoceroses, polar bear and wild cat were also exhibiting signs of stress with repetitive behaviors. This zoo needs to be relocated to a bigger space or the animals should be given to a more responsible conservation group.

  • Alec Green

We did a private tour before they open. Jen was amazing!! Went out of her way to accommodate our needs of having a small toddler, and our favorite animals that we wanted to see. Very knowledgeable and made it so memorable! Even orchestrated a special giraffe feeding at the end! HIGHLY recommend the private tour before they open- animals are super active and Jen does an awesome job!

I decided to take an afternoon to go to the local zoo. It was relative cheap at $20. You can purchase tickets before you arrive online for cheaper. The zoo was really great. There was a ton of activities throughout the zoo. You can feed the giraffes and elephants for an additional cost. They were feeding monkeys. They did a seal show. The only downside to this zoo was its on the side of hill which makes it a little harder to get to some animals, all ADA accessible.

  • Samuel West

I really like this zoo, I've always had a good time here. They've done a good job of expanding their enclosures to give the animals more space and a more natural environment, while also increasing visibility. I really enjoy the African Safari and their Rocky Shores areas. We had a good time and the kids loved it. Unfortunately all of their water fountains are shut off right now, so make sure to bring your own.

It was pretty fun! Some areas were a little sad.. where the apes were- it looks like it was so claustrophobic for them.. but the park/zoo was pretty great for any kid under 10.. it’s a little unimpressive for the only zoo in salt lake.. I would go back with my kid if she wanted to, online tickets are $2 cheaper than at the spot.

Take advantage of the Wild Weekdays during Nov. and Dec. to visit the zoo. The crowds are small and you can take more time to enjoy the sights, dress warm. The carousel was open, but the train was closed for the season. Although it is a smaller zoo, Hogle is making attempts to diversify and offer learning experiences, it has an expansion under construction.

I love this zoo. Lots to do. The exhibits are well designed and spacious with plenty of variety of animals. We stayed for the presentation about Elephants and it was really fascinating to watch and learn more about those amazing creatures. The admission was a bit steep - $19, but it was a great experience as an adult as well as for my 2 year old son. The best part was drinking water from the lion’s mouth. Bonus - they have a large play area.

Lions, Tigers and Bears and everything kinda critter to tickle your fancy... whatever fanciful thing you want. Even food for your little tikes! Great place to spend the day. It was hot and there was shade, and there were misters, so that helped. They had ice cream and they had icees, so that was even better.

We picked a great day to go to the zoo! The animals were very lively and vocal! It was a blast seeing all the animals! The habitats are big, it seems like the animals have the space to do their thing! And they all seemed very happy! The path was maintained very well, even while it was snowing.

This is a really great zoo, what a wonderful place for a day visit for the family. Public areas are nice and clean restrooms are clean gift shop is fun. Animals look really well taken care of in their enclosures. nice looking, clean, animals roaming around playful which is always a great sign. Nothing too out of the ordinary or more interesting than others but is still a really great place to spend the day.

I loved going today. The polar bear was super active and was rubbing his face on the glass and we got to see the gorillas be fed. It was a perfect day out and the playground was a perfect ending to the day. I recommend going when it's above 30 degrees so that all the animals are out.

Fantastic zoo. Flew here from Denver. This would be in my top 5 favorites. Yes, I've been to a lot of zoos. I have a lot more to get to. It is so beautiful in it's location. To see the beauty in the zoo and the mountains that surround the zoo. The animals were active and we got to see plenty of them. Food was kind of expensive. Definitely a good zoo to come to.

My company had our summer party here. Being here after hours was amazing. The zoo offered extra shows for us to see. Something I really liked was that the passes were for all day, not just the time after the park was closing.

We love the zoo and all the staff! We have always had great experiences and learn new things each time we are there! We are going to miss the Elephants but are grateful that they’re being so well taken care of! We love how clean everything is and how close you can safely get to the animals! The bird show is always fantastic and we love the train!

Since 1931 Hogle Zoo is a fantastic zoo. Great exhibits with some very rare animals. Plan on lots of walking with hills as well. For the most part it is handicapped equipped and friendly as well. Took my youngest grand daughters and they had so much fun!

It's a small zoo but still hits all the main animals most kids want to see. The exhibits look clean and the animals appear healthy, for zoo animals anyway. My children (between 4 and 8) loved it. We will likely be back soon!

Visited this zoo while in the area. We’re from out of town. Very impressed with the cleanliness and organized place. Animals looked cared for with ample space. We loved the train ride and the carousel. Fun little gift shop. Staff was friendly and helpful.

Showing signs of wear and age, but makes sense I've been going to this zoo for more than 50 years. I love how they reduce entry in November, opening the opportunity for people to visit no matter their income level.

It was a great experience! The weather was perfect, wasn't too busy for a Friday afternoon, and there were lots of animals to see! Cute little establishment for a stroll. Entry was $23.95 per adult if I can remember.

Such a cute zoo! We spent about 2.5 hours inside. You can get lost so check out the map. Only downfall was how late the food places opened. We had to walk back to the front of the zoo to get food when we were hungry.

Had a fun time here. Not too many exhibits but the animals are so great. The carousel was a little pricey for one ride and the food was pricey as well. Going to miss the elephants here but hopefully it’ll be good for them and the zoo. Favorite animal was definitely the seals. They seem to enjoy putting on a show with their swimming.

  • Chelsey Eddins

Great experience, many animals were up and moving around. Would love to have seen the kids park open and my kids had hoped the names of the animals would have been posted. Great experience overall.

We love our zoo! We had a great time in July with the kids and sure wore them out. Lol. We had good appearances from the animals and got to spend good time with them up close! The lion drinking fountain is iconic. There is also a small playground there. We were able to get drinks from the bistro. Such a wonderful place!

The zoo is on the smaller side, but it is fun to visit. They have fantastic theming for their Africa, Asia, and Arctic areas. The price was just under $20 last time I went.

This was my first visit to the Hogle Zoo. It is very clean, one of the staff spent a good amount of time answering our many questions and the animals seem happy and well cared for. I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because it’s a fairly small zoo and each exhibit had only a couple or few animals.

  • Krista Pride

The polar bear and the sea lions were super active today! Definitely plan to get there 3 or more hours before close -- both times we've gone, two hours was not enough to see all of the animals before closing

There are shows, demonstrations, and animal exhibits. Parking can be difficult on a crowded day, but parking is free. The park is clean. Good place to bring the family.

Hogle zoo has been greatly improved recently. Definitely worth a new visit. Arrive at 9am sharp to avoid the heat and crowds. On an overcast day the animals will be out and active. Three or four hours is enough to see all the exhibits. Highly recommend.

  • Miriah Wixom

It's a great Zoo! There's no hippo's or penguins anymore, but still really fun! The habitats are great and very much like where the animals are from. The elephants are leaving in Fall 2023. But they are expanding a different part for other animals.

We had so much fun at the zoo. We went on a $5 weekday. The parking lot was full but the park is so big It wasn’t too crowded.

Nice zoo with lions, tigers, and bears. Expensive $21 for adults to get in. Kids aren't much less. Fortunately as a Veteran, I got in free today with my family. Train ride $3. Well kept & peaceful. Enjoyable. More

We go here once a year for my son's birthday. It's a lovely zoo! The animals seem happy, or at least content, and the enclosures/habitats provide enrichment. Feeding the giraffes was a really fun experience too!

  • Grizzly JOE

Highly recommend just for the variety of animals alone! Awesome zoo with enclosures that are interactive and fun for kids. Almost 2k steps to see the whole thing. See the elephants first thing they're worth it!

  • Hannah

Fun in the snow. We got to watch the big apes feeding time and that was fun. Elephants have been moved to a different zoo. Big cats were pretty active in the snow. Baby zebra was adorable, didn't see giraffes.

  • Kyle Jensen

Fun place to bring kids because they love the animals. During the winter the majority of animals enclosures are closed.
