U.N.I. is one of those places you go to and feel like home: it’s cozy, safe, functional, and everything you need in a small basement. It’s the mom and pop restaurant of gyms. You can order off the menu, or you can ask the chief to cook you up something you crave. And at U.N.I., you can walk in and go about your own exercise plan or work with any of a handful of exceptional trainers to target your needs and achieve your goals. I’ve worked with Harry for a little under a year now, and the experience has been transformative. Movements feel natural, strength has improved, and the quality of work is better. It’s about doing the right things in the right amount to get the right results. Not just doing everything and anything. But, beside working with Harry and before doing so, every member of the staff were the right dose of present and available without being intrusive. From Kurt - owner and trainer - to Karl, Harry, Anthony, and Annabelle (trainers) there’s a community that fosters healthy gym culture and wellness through movement. You can just as easily talk about your day as you can about the best exercise for scapular strength. I can lambast about the hours and how the weekends are only from 9:00 to 15:00. Or that holidays are off. And I can try to find reason that a small space would feel cramped. But it doesn’t. And it’s never so busy that you can’t do what you want when you want. Ann the criticism I may have is a drop in the bucket of everything else that’s so great about the place. U.N.I. is a home. The staff is a family. And you will always be welcomed as part of the community.
I was initially in touch with Chris, who was so very kind as to take time to speak with me, answer questions and do some quick assessments on what I was looking for and what my goals were. He recommended a trainer named Harry Brown and I am so glad he did. Harry is so incredibly knowledgeable, outgoing and, most of all, makes training FUN. Harry has worked incredibly hard to build a fantastic program for me based on my individual needs combined with his professional expertise in training. I suffered an injury about a year before I started training at UNI that required extensive physiotherapy. He not only considered this when building my program but went out of his way to incorporate exercises that would continue to build strength to my previously injured foot and ankle. Like a lot of people, sometimes I can struggle with motivation. Sometimes I’m tired or stressed from work, other times I arrive ready to tackle whatever he has planned. Harry has excellent communication skills and knows the right questions to ask when I show up for a session so he knows when we maybe need to take it easy or when we can really go for it. He knows how to structure sessions and programs in a way that you really learn how to get the most out of a workout. Having a trainer is an investment, not just in money but also personal commitment. When you have someone like Harry in your corner you leave not only having a great workout but with lessons and knowledge that will stay with you as you continue your fitness journey. I am so glad I chose UNI!
UNI Training (Vieux Port) is a small boutique gym near the Basilica Notre-Dame -- super convenient for those who live in the area, or a perfect holiday gym for fitness nuts who don't want to miss a workout. As a boutique gym, UNI training puts more emphasis on personal training and classes, and it seems that pretty much everyone that works here is knowledgeable on some aspect of fitness. They definitely strive for quality here. E.g., although the gym is small, it's thoughtfully designed in terms of equipment+placement, and there's almost everything any fitness enthusiast would want. They even have a platform for DLs/OLY, and you don't have to worry about making too much noise since it's located in the basement. For those interested in the personal training aspect -- I've been training with Curt Griffin for powerlifting, and he's been extremely helpful. However, from what I've observed, he has clients of all different personalities and fitness goals, and deals with all of them like an absolute pro. He will listen to what you want and your concerns, and adapt your training to suit your goals and style. Overall, the vibe here is pretty low-key and no-frills, which I love! It's generally understood that everyone that frequents the gym is there to exercise and better themselves, and I feel the atmosphere to be quite comfortable and judgement free as a result. Finally, this gym has the strongest air-conditioning of all gyms I have ever been too. It's amazing.
Hard review to write in the sense that part of me wants to keep this hidden gem hidden, but it deserves all the praise it keeps getting. I’ve been going to different gyms for the last 15-20 years and this is by far my favorite. The place is small, but perfectly equipped. It has all the barbells you’d ever want or need (Olympic, hex bar, safety squat bar, etc.), a deadlift platform, sled, weight vest, cardio stations, squat racks. I have seen better equipment there than in any gym 2-3 times its size. And most importantly, the gym culture there is what I’ve always been looking for, positivity from the top down. The owner is one of the nicest guys out there, always ready to help. This positivity trickles down to the gym members. You won’t ever feel “judged” there. If you’re in the area, don’t hesitate and sign up.
As a member of a large surface gym for over 15 years, it took a leap of faith to switch to a compact, friendly-neighborhood gym. Though not as highly equipped with endless cardio machines as a big box gym, U.N.I. has everything I need to train and is centrally located in Old Montreal. While it's only a 5-minute walk from my home, I was initially surprised to learn that many members travel from all over the city to train here. My guess is that they love this gym just as much as I do. It's a great environment with friendly staff and members. Their trainers are highly accomplished, knowledgeable and helpful, and are inspirational people all around.
One of the best gyms I've been a member at over the years. Very well-equipped for a smaller place and with enough variety in said equipment to encourage trying new things. Staff is super knowledgeable and helpful as well; I am constantly learning new things through them, even after all these years of training. The perfect place for anyone looking to make serious development! EDIT: Years later and my opinion remains unchanged. And something to add, got great help for my shoulder from Harry, one of the trainers there. Pain for all these months finally seeming to subside, due in no small part to his programming and advice!
I have been training at both U.N.I gyms for the last 10 years with a few personal trainers over the years. They are knowledgeable, fun, able to adapt the training according to my needs or injuries, and most importantly, pushing me to get the results I can’t get training alone. They offered to train me on Zoom quickly when the pandemic started. Since they reopened, they are doing everything they can to keep the gym clean and safe (e.g. new air filtration system). Highly recommend!
I came to the gym about 8 months ago with chronic knee pain. Curt introduced me to Harry who really took the time to understand not only my pain issues & limitations but also my goals and previous history before putting together a comprehensive plan for me. I have been working with Harry since then and my knee pain is all but gone and I am back to full body workouts and pretty much full mobility. Cannot recommend Harry, or this gym, highly enough.
I’ve been a member at U.N.I for about 3 years now it’s been the best gym i’ve ever attended since i’ve started working out. It’s fantastic to see how a gym insures clients safety post quarantine while following all protocols and maintaining an efficient workout space, whether that be their online time slot booking system, or training 1 on 1 with a certified trainer. Definitely recommend this gym, you’ll not be disappointed.
Absolutely would recommend U.N.I. if the location makes sense for you! I've been working out there for about a year and a half during which time I've lost about 50 pounds. They have been flexible with adjusting the trainer I was able to work with because of scheduling changes and all the trainers were great at making sure I kept the motivation going. Great experience and will keep coming here as to keep the progress going.
Curt Griffin is extremely knowledgable and truly takes the time to help you with your needs. The gym is well equipped and even though everyone is easy going about sharing equipment, I've always got my workouts done without having to 'wait my turn'. Even though I'm training to compete, I feel a great vibe and not a competitive atmosphere like most other places, and I've trained at many gyms in Montreal.
I’m a new member at this gym and I all ready feel welcomed and supported. Members are respected and respectful even on busy hour times. Ladies have a huge cloakroom with a sauna. The high light is Curt the owner. He is always on site taking care of US, his members. You can always go to him for any advice and he is always available and generous of is knowledge. Merci beaucoup Curt!
Been training at this gym for more than two years, the trainers are amazing, everything is super clean and there is never too many people. Would recommend to anyone, and strongly encourage people with less training experience to take a couple sessions with one of the trainers, this will change your life!
This was my gym-away-from-home while we stayed in Montreal for a couple of months. The owner and staff were super helpful and nice. I would highly recommend this gym whether you're in town temporarily or always! They seem to have flexible membership plans to fit everybody's situation. Thanks!
I was in town for a few days and This gym was perfect. They have all the high quality essentials for strength and cardio training, plus a sled and some other fun toys. The owner Kurt was super welcoming and the vibe was very positive. Will definitely train here again when back in Montreal!
We were looking for a place to train in Montreal and U.N.I. was the best option cause their flexible enroll plans. Once there it didn’t disappoint, clean and solid facility with an excellent environment and great customer service. Definitely will come back on my next season in Montreal.
The gym in old Montreal had the perfect location for us when we were there on our holiday. We really apprecieted the deadlift area, allowing us to pull some heavy deadlifts during our stay. We had contact with Curt Griffin who works there, and he was really kind and professional.
Absolutely love U.N.I The atmosphere is incredible, and the community of fitness enthusiasts is so welcoming and motivating. Special shoutout to Coach Akram his expertise and friendly approach make every session a great experience. Proud to be a part of this awesome gym family!
Since starting to train under Harry's careful eye I've noticed immediate improvements in how I feel and move in my day to day. Just when you think you're starting to master an exercise he already knows it's time to add a variation to throw you off again. Always a fun session!
One of the best gyms I’ve been to. The space is clean, not too crowded, the people are respectful, ample diversity and availability of equipment, and the owner is very helpful in case you need anything. Overall just an excellent ambiance to train in. Highly recommended!
Bon endroit !
I LOVE U.N.I! I’m an American Powerlifter and needed a place that had the equipment I needed and this was it. Jenny in the front desk was so nice and helpful, I don’t think I’ve ever had service like this at a gym and I will 100% come back when I visit again.
After trying all the gym in the old Montreal...this is by far the best gym around! Curt the owner and fitness pro is currently on place helping people and all the machines you really need is there...what you don’t need is not there! Friendly place!
Excellent gym, amazing stuff...also supported by all the trainers at the gym. They help me achieve my goal and always keep on pushing me to be better. Highly recommended!! Curt Griffin thank you for your private training session, it changed my life
Awesome gym! Great staff, prime location, smaller setting that feels much more comfortable than chain gyms. It's motivating to be in an exercise setting that is full of people trying to improve their fitness! Highly recommend - thank you U.N.I.!
Very welcoming environment and awesome coaches to make you feel that your going to where you need to be health wise. I was trained by camile and when i tell you i changed tremendously mentally and physically in places that i never thought about.
I visit Montreal several times a year and only recently discovered this gem of a gym. Great place to drop in and get an effective workout. They have everything you need to get the job done - and helpful professionals to help out when needed.
Been coming here for a bit over two years — Great gym, super friendly and knowledgeable staff, equipment is new, music is good, people are nice. Open on the weekend! Is there anything else you need from a gym?
Excellent gym. Pas le plus grand mais super bien équipé. Localisé au cœur du vieux Montréal. Le staff est compétent et accueillant et on ne se sent pas jugé - ni par le staff ni par les autres membres
I am a competitive bodybuilder so I have been to many gyms. This UNI was very well equipped to suit all my needs and it was a very pleasant, welcoming experience. I would gladly train there any time.
Been training here for almost two years with Harry. Staff is friendly and always willing to help, they have all equipment one could need and the atmosphere is very confortable. Highly recommended!
Great staff, great space. Not overcrowded and always friendly without being overbearing. I spent 5 months working out here as I was in MTL short term and it was awesome. No complaints.
Great gym, quiet, private and the ever famous gym owner and trainers are always happy to lend a hand showing you form and give you a tour! Plus they have saunas and showers :)
This gym has everything even if it seems small and the good thing is that it is not crowded like other places so you're actually able to workout in peace, staff is nice too!
Meilleur gym en ville! Propre, convivial. Personnels sympathiques et compétents. Toujours de bons conseils. On a vraiment l’impression de faire partie d’une petite famille.
Great gym and great staff :) ! Every staff member is also a personal trainer and will make sure you have proper form when working out. Best gym in Old Montreal by far!
Excellent gym, great atmosphere, friendly staff, amazing location, and phenomenal price! Can't ask for anything better. Excited to see my progress as this gym
The gym is ok for the price they ask. The staff is nice though the gym is a bit small, it lacks some basic machines in my opinion. They play good music there!
Very friendly and welcoming gym. It's clean and well-equipped, offering the perfect environment to work out in. Curt and his staff are very kind and helpful.
Great facility for Olympic Weightlifting session. I got a day pass and used the lifting platform they have Rogue bumper plates and bars.
This is a fantastic gym with an incredible selection of top-of-the-line equipment. If they don't have it, you don't need it.
Excellent gym, amazing knowledgeably trainers, kinesiologists and therapists in a beautiful historic building!
