Southside had been on my foodie list for a while. I’m so glad I had it saved for so long so that we could try it on my birthday. Let’s just say we were not disappointed. First impressions, I was obsessed with its beautiful location amongst the urban oasis of tropical greenery, which swept us away to a peaceful escape. We enjoyed our dinner amongst the mushroom dim lights which had us relaxed and ready to indulge our meal. Ryan delivered us with the warmest hospitality and guaranteed our top notch experience. Southside delivers a diverse menu of East-asian cuisine with a love of Chinese tradition. Our highlights were the duck rage noodles, which was absolutely tasty and the Northern lamb that was so flavoursome and delectable. We were also beyond impressed with their selection of wines available by the glass. Ryan was very attentive to our needs. Overall, I highly recommend booking in your next fine dining experience at Southside. Whether it be for your birthday, date night or a girls night out. Until next time Southside. ✨ • spring rolls • mushroom wonton • king fish • wagyu xiao long bao • duck ragu noodles • hainese chicken • mapo tofu & mushroom • northern lamb • el razzle • ganbei berry for more foodie reviews follow @katey.thefoodie on instagram

This was a pretty interesting place as from the outside, you wouldn’t be able to tell you would be getting Asian food. We were really interested to see if their overpriced Asian food will be justified and we were quite surprised. Most of the foods we ate were actually pretty good. They don’t quite justify the pricing though but made for an interesting experience. We chose the ‘feed me’ option and accidentally ordered dishes that already had two pieces so we probably didn’t need to double up on it. The service here was strange but fine. It looks like they find any kids off the streets to serve food and wait tables but the ones that served us were competent and helpful. They messed up one of our drink orders and fixed it and let us keep the error drink. The area itself I was a little unimpressed by as the place is quite dark (probably for an intimate experience) but because of that, our table wasn’t cleaned properly before being seated. The music is also played quite loudly which is probably to cover the sound of trains passing above. Overall, I don’t regret checking out the place but don’t see ourselves needing to return.

I really really wanted to like Southside, but sadly, if you asked me how I would describe Southside, I would say: best described as “elevated chinese chop suey restaurant set in an under the bridge laneway, try hard with its pretentious Sydney / Gold Coast vibe”. The whole laneway thing is too try hard Melbourne, the trying to give out a relaxed vibe yet the music is way too loud, the outdoor area is too dark and it just felt like I will be eaten alive by mozzies. High prices, lacking technique would be how I would describe the food as well. The char siu puff burst, the puff is quite hard, rather than having the crispy texture and melt in your mouth That a typical char siu puff that you can get from Chinese restaurants that charges 1/3 of the price. The potato spring rolls is nice enough, but nothing that wow’d me. Chicken Siu mai is like something out of a mediocre yum Cha restaurant. The typhoon shelter fried rice - the topping should be crispy, garlicky and full of flavour. Sadly the topping, the Typhoon is not crispy it was just fairly oily. I wish I could say good stuff about it because the staff there are amazing and the service really win by a mile compare to Chinese restaurants. I just wish that the food lives up to the hype.
It's a really lovely setting. The service was excellent. Friendly and professional. The food is good but we felt it could be better. The xiao long bao didn't have enough soup in it, the wrapper was a bit thick and overcooked. The potato truffle spring rolls are nice but I wouldn't get it again. It's basically mashed potato in a spring roll with a truffle taste. The pork belly was nice. The chilli in the dishes were just right, you wouldn't want much more chilli, as the wine was difficult to enjoy even at that heat. Perhaps I should have been more careful in my wine choice. I definitely recommend dining here, and I would come back even if just for the atmosphere and gorgeous setting. I would however order differently next time. Maybe we will go for more traditional dishes when we dine here again. FYI there is seating inside and outside. Both are stunning set amongst the palm trees and stunning lighting. Also, this is a great option for dining at before a show at QPAC. It's across the road, so only a 3 min walk. Also the staff are attentive to how much time you have. The food comes out quickly too.

A very large space for the outside bar area. Dimly lit and space for plenty of people. More signage would be recommended to understand the bar area and restaurant area. Staff were extremely friendly and attentive, serving water often and providing recommendations from the menu. The restaurant itself was quite intimate and small - would recommend making a booking before arriving. All the meals were delicious. The Potato & Truffle Spring Rolla were hot and beautifully melted, definitely try this. The duck ragu with house noodles were filled with flavour and generous pieces of meat. The Hainanese chicken was quite plain compared to the noodles, however had great flavours and provided a great balance. Although we did not order drinks, the bill came to $93 between 2 people which is on the pricier side. The music within the restaurant was also a little too loud, causing people to talk louder because of it and made it difficult to hear the waiters. Will come back to try their other dishes!

Southside restaurant is a stunning venue to look at and dine at. Set amongst beautiful greenery and ferns just off Fish Lane. You have both inside and outside dining options that are both stunning. Staff here are really friendly, helpful and attentive, top marks here! The food though does not live up to the billing. It's Asian food with fun twists, although I feel they have gone overboard and tried to do too much. Every single dish has one flavour that just punches you in the face, imagine a kid pouring twice the amount of cordial into the team water, it's that bad. Whether it be ginger or mandarin it is too overpowering and you miss the beautiful produce they are using. I really like the venue and the staff here, but the food is way off the mark. I myself would not go back and would not recommend, but if you like a really overpowering flavour then this place is for you.

Very nice ambience and excellent customer service. The outdoor dining area is very nicely decorated. I found it really impressive. We had the set menu at $95pp. Most of the dishes were nice, and I have to say the entrées were quite creative. I especially like the sauce for the oyster and the kingfish. The main courses were slightly disappointing. The portion of fried rice was way too much, I suggest they serve half of the size and include a dessert course instead. I think the fried rice was freshly cooked hence it’s still a bit too moist. The Roti was also a bit too moist and I don’t think they should serve both the fried rice and roti. Roti should go with curry but there is no curry in the set menu. But overall it’s quite nice dining experience.

Was over in Brisbane for work last week. Had this place recommended to me and it exceeded expectations. Service was perfect, food was some of the best I’ve eaten in months. Fantastic wine selections from staff to pair. The style and fit out is beautiful, garden outdoor dining was amazing. Already planning my next meal here when I’m back in Brisbane! Hiramasa kingfish was unreal, probably the best I’ve ever had. Truffle mash springs rolls were so bloody good. Duck ragu and Sichuan fried chicken were incredible. Wok tossed greens was great alongside.

We left with such an overwhelming feeling of contentment 10/10 Judy thank you again so much m Dave & Ange

Judy was so friendly - made our time here awesome
This restaurant truly feels like an oasis in a concrete jungle. The outside and inside seating have natural light and views of the greenery outside. The staff all wear neutral colours and the music also adds to the elevated but calm vibe. The scallop was refreshing and the cocktails too. I’d love to try more. I really recommend the vegetarian dishes - the spring rolls (let them cool or they’ll burn your tongue), the xiao long bao and the salt and pepper tofu. The truffle added a nice touch to the prawn har gao, though I think it’s more novelty. The scallop and prawn gyoza was just okay. We were too full to have dessert but I would definitely come back to try more dishes.

I enjoyed the wide variety of meals available. The authentic ‘asian’ style taste was a great dinner. The array of options for offer were fantastic. One of my personal favourites appetisers was the truffle spring rolls. The venue was beautiful and the staff were friendly, however, it was difficult to engage in conversations as the venue is situated right under a train bridge, hence the volume pollution. Additionally, I believe it would be nice to add a larger variety of non-alcoholic beverages such as juices, or even simple colas rather than mock tails. The chocolate moose dessert was a bit too sweet so I opted to not finish it.

Visiting from Sydney and staying just up the road it was a wonderful surprise to find this place. We sat upstairs, the space was beautiful and the trains passing through above the window was a very cool feature and unexpected. The food was great, we ordered a bit too much but managed to get through it all. Favourites were the Singapore Chilli Crab Xiao Long Bao and the duck ragu noodles. The service was very welcoming, especially given we had 2 kids with us and while not exactly a kids restaurant they made the experience fun for them and they enjoyed the interesting food too. Will definitely be back next time in Brisbane.

Excellent service Stunning vibe Delicious food After seeing this restaurant on a list of suggested brisbane eateries we knew it was a sign when it was on the same street as our accommodation and we were not disappointed. Located down fish lane a Melbourne vibe highly activated lane way you are in a tropical paradise on arrival, located right beneath the train line you would not notice because of the beautiful garden that has been created. The food was excellent. We went with the banquet option with the paired wines and all dishes impressed. Packed with flavour and enough to leave us rolling out 2 hours later. Excellent service that was informative, attentive and responsive.
Had an amazing meal here last night. I’d heard some negative things about price etc but that’s not my experience. Firstly the staff made us feel really welcome and not in an overly-intrusive way. The food was exceptional. Goyza with prawn and scallops best I’ve ever had. The prawn toast was out of this world. The lamb was spiced perfectly and pure melt in the mouth. Everything was spot on and not overly expensive. It was so good we’re back again for lunch! Deffo 10/10.

How many people can say they dined under a railway train line and loved the experience? This little hidden oasis is beautifully set amongst lush greenery. The Chinese fusion menu is small but very impressive. Fine dining in a relaxed environment removes all the pretentiousness but leaves you feeling relaxed (although that could have been our lovely personable server or the music playing). This is a must see if you're in South Brisbane.

This restaurant offers fusion Chinese food. The entrance was somewhat difficult to find but it opens up to a courtyard. Staff were very friendly and helpful however the there were multiple issues with incorrect orders being placed. Food was generally good. We ordered a number of dishes including Hainan Chicken, Chow Kwai Tiu, stir fried duck noodle, pork belly, stir fried vegetables, Xiao Long Bao, prawn dumpling, eggplant, mapo tofu and rice. While food presentation was very good, the taste was not that different from standard Chinese restaurants. Price-wise, I would consider the restaurant to be fairly expensive for the ingredients used.
We order the 108$ set menu, to start the price was ridiculous compared to what they served us. One piece of each item, total 6 items and on the end a big bowl of white rice to share with 5 pieces on short ribs. Despite all this, the place is very nice, good vibes under the train tracks, very cool. what stood out about the entire menu was the prawn toast and the oysters. The rest was ok but definitely not worth the price.

Service was amazing as was the food. Would recommend booking a table if you wish to sit outside. Lychee cocktail was perfectly balanced and looked good as well. Ordered the beef in garlic sauce, wagyu beef dum sum and a moreton bay bug rice noodle dish. All were very tasty and for us the perfect portion size as neither of us are big eaters. Share plates are exactly that. You will need to order a few if looking for a meal. Ambience excellent whether inside or out. Definitely in the higher price range but well worth it. Will go there again without hesitation.

One of my favourite modern Chinese cuisine so far in Brisbane since I used to visit @littlevalley_ and I'm in love with their dumplings flavour now time for me to visit @southside_restaurant in @explorefishlane and yes it is not disappointing me at all. Love the vibe and service was brilliant The food plate up are instagramable and on point. We were ordering pretty much most of their signature menu. I think you would better go with the group of friends and family if you would like to try their whole menu. Overall we had great experience there. : : #nutsjourney #chinesefood #explorefishlane #dinner
Food is quite overpriced for what it is imo. I got the truffle prawn toast which was delicious but simple, and the crab and pork xiao long boa was okay but didn’t quite taste fresh. I’m sure you could get better food on the pre fixe menu or if you’re willing to splurge more than we did. Still yummy but not amazing. Service was excellent tho and the atmosphere is 10/10 - especially the patio!

My family and I went to Southside Restaurant celebrating a birthday. As soon as we arrived we were greeted by the most friendly and accommodating staff. It felt like such a personal experience with each staff member introducing themselves with a genuine care to hear what we were up to and why we were there. The food was absolutely incredible. She made it simple for us because we weren’t looking to over order and we had the perfect amount. I had the chilled red to finish which was a perfect touch, they have different chilled reds each week which is so fun! Will be back soon! Food highlights, Lamb Shoulder and the Prawn Toast!

Had dinner and ordered the banquet. It is a beautiful restaurant with great service. They were exceptionally accommodating with dietary requirements, one of our members was pescatarian and they brought our separate plates for him. The food itself was a let down. I was disappointed that dessert wasn’t a part of the banquet, which it generally is. The duck noodles were the highlight. I thought the cucumber salad was very under seasoned and the mustard sauce that went with the pork was overwhelmingly strong. I found the cocktails average too.
The ambiance is lovely and I think it’d be a great place for a drink and chat with friends and loved ones, but unfortunately, the food falls very short of expectations. The dim sum lacked freshness, leaving a lingering frozen taste. As for the main dishes, they were oddly both excessively salty and oddly lacking in flavor… the sauces were overly salted, yet somehow their flavors failed to infuse the dishes.

We found this little food oasis hidden off fish lane. We had 6 people dining for dinner and the service and food were great. Looks like they have ironed out a lot of the issues with service because our waiter George was great and made a number of suggestions that ensured we had a great night. The menu seems to be more of a fusion of Asian and Mediterranean inspired dishes. All were very flavourful and we will definitely go back again. The restaurant is busy so it’s advisable to make a booking to avoid disappointment.
Good ambience good decor well executed for ambience even before talking about food and drink. Innovative fusion style. The lobster dumplings were my highlight (reminiscent of Rick Shores bug roll) Very nicely done shanghai soup dumplings. Duck noodles had huge chunks of duck meat in master stock was most delicious. Coral trout in cured pork, charred ginger and shiitake broth was great combo work another level of flavors. Reasonable selection of reds. Nathan our server was responsive and knowledgeable- did great job.
This is our second year coming to Southside for Melbourne cup function and once again the food, drink and most of all hospitality did not disappoint. Kudos to Andrea who makes us feel so welcomed and looked after through the event. Keep up your great work!

Update 14 Oct 2022: visited Southside with a large group and they still serve great food and ambiance. The staff were friendly and helpful. We did shared mains and the rosè was delicious. The tofu dish and the fish is so tasty! Delightful evening. 2021 Review: Stunning greenery and atmosphere. The banquet varied in tastes but their wine selection was on point. Great service and delicious scallops and cuttlefish sandwiches!
Great East-Asian cuisine, with a delicious range of dim sum noodle dishes and share plates, and offering good wines from around the world. There's also an 8 course menu for $69pp, with the option to add matching wines for an extra $35pp or $49pp. It occupies a beautifully designed building adjacent to a tropical urban garden that it shares with sibling Kiki, a banh mi and coffee hut by day and cocktail bar by night.
Used to be so good when it just started but someone’s bad taste ruined it finally. Menu is now a bunch of overpriced dumplings. Spicy tofu that used to be so good is now made of a sauce that is too sweet. Ugly cheap house music is deafening and makes it just a functions’ place for the neighboring office plankton. Used to love you but no

An upscale restaurant that serves fusion Chinese dim sum. I felt everything was so-so and quite overpriced. The fried rice was definitely the best dish among what we ordered. Service was excellent.
