My journey here began when they opened in October and I have attended just over 100 classes to this point. So this review is based upon that experience. 1) Facility. It is excellent. Clean, working equipment: treadmills. water rowers, and floor benches/weights/bands/equipment. The change rooms are spacious with individual shower stalls so you can workout, shower and get ready for work in the morning (or, I suppose for a hot date in the evening) 2) Metrics. You can't manage what you don't measure. The use of heart rates means that you are seeing YOUR progress. You work at a pace that challenges you, but not at the pace of those around you. Your needs are based on your own efforts which you can clearly see. This is key. To get results you need to push your own boundaries. You will also see improvements quickly. In my case, I have lost 30+ pounds, seen muscle mass increase, and can run significantly faster and lift heavier weights. 3) Motivation. The use of scheduled classes and trainers keeps you accountable and motivated. If you want to have a flexible gym that you can brush-off 30 minutes prior to a workout - this isn't the place for you. You commit to being there! (yeah... you can cancel 8 hours in advance, so there are options, but you can't blow it off at the last minute - which is a GOOD thing.) Also - the trainers are very motivational (as is the music) - they get you going, tell you what and when to push yourself and tell you when and where to go all-out. (that's the idea behind this - base, push, all-out in intervals) 4) Science. interval training works for many fitness goals. Look it up. 5) Staff. Always pleasant and helpful. I'll be honest - in reading a couple of reviews that were negative in this regard I had to ask myself if those reviewers experienced a lot of bad things in their life in general (ie. does it follow them around?). Those reviews really don't make sense based upon the 100+ times I've been there. I've had nothing but the most pleasant interactions and service here. Downsides? Every place has some downsides. The only one here might be the nature of the workouts if you have goals that don't sync with the style of training. So if you are a body-builder - you would need to lift outside of this studio. You can't really free-form your workout - it's a template. That's generally a good thing. Now that I've been going for awhile, I will probably do some individual/lifting outside of Orange Theory - but that's a personal preference. However, this place will meet 90% of the populations goals 100% of the time. Cost also comes up sometimes. It is more than an on-your-own gym, but far less expensive than a one-on-one personal trainer. Your own circumstances will help you decide if the investment in your health is worth it. Personally - I think it's some of the best money I spend. Just try it. You'll see for yourself.

I have been actively using Orangetheory Kensington since their opening and have fallen in love with the energy, the people and of course the theory. To speak generally about my experience with Orangetheory and my most recent experience this evening at Rachel's 4:30 PM class, what has stood out to myself the most is the power of the staff. The moment you enter a studio the front end staff make you feel welcomed and make an extremely strong effort to know you by face and name, all while keeping composed and friendly despite the flurry of activity that goes on before and between classes. Another area that Orangetheory thrives in is the coaches and how they start motivating you before you even enter to workout space, either by taking the time to introduce new clients to the structure of the workout and the different equipment, or by welcoming you to another serious "sweat sesh". I have particularly enjoyed my time with coach Rachel, whom was my first coach and has continued to be one of my favourites as she's taken the time to learn what works for me and is cognizant of my strengths and weaknesses while approaching these in way thats are encouraging and keep me coming back. To speak to the workout structure itself, as someone who has been active most of their life and spent many hours in yoga classes, the gym, or even using at home videos- Orangetheory is a step above. There is always a sense of dedication by each person in the building, and no matter where you are on your fitness journey there is room for you and support. The workouts keep you focused from task to task, and are structured in a way that keeps you engaged during pushes and revitalized during recovery. I particulary enjoy that each day is a surprise on wether you are focusing on: strength, power, endurance, etc. meaning you aren't able to pick and choose or skip days that you might otherwise avoid out of lack of confidence or knowledge.

I've been going to Orange Theory in Kensington for about 3 months now. I thoroughly enjoy working out there. I must admit that I went into it not expecting to enjoy myself being the old guy working out with a bunch of kids. That fear was completely unfounded, the staff make you feel right at home. I can't say I don't notice other people when I'm there as I'm a bit too competitive for that, but the workouts are intense enough that you really pretty much just focus on yourself, as does everyone else. Being able to see your heart rate zone all through the workout certainly helps with motivation and the coaches really stay on top of your technique (though in the middle of a sufferfest sometimes you don't want to hear them!) and keep the energy level high. I have been to a few of the OTF gyms in Calgary, and all are great. I do like the Kensington one the best as I truly enjoy all the coaches and staff. All have great senses of humor and the banter is fun. The gym itself is well laid out, everything is fairly new and I've never had any problems with any of the equipment, other than sometimes picking too heavy of a weight to start with, and figuring out just what base pace is on a rowing machine (machine from hell). Its always really clean, nice shower facilities. I originally started this to try for 3 months and then move on to something a bit less structured. However, after 3 months I find no reason to go anywhere else.

Things I liked about Orange Theory: 1. If you sign up for your "free 1 time pass" it will come into your inbox in just a few minutes. 2. Staff was very friendly and were not pushy about signing you up on the spot. 3. Coach took you through some basics on how to use equipment like the treadmill and rower before class. 4. You have a TV screen that tells you what your next movements are and in what rep amount. 5. Workout was challenging. Things I did not like as much about Orange Theory / Things I wish they did: 1. It would be nice if the TV with the "heart rate" tracker was viewable from all locations in the gym. I was on the end treadmill and that made it harder to see. 2. It would be nice if they did a "intro week" where for $30-$40 you could go unlimited to see if you liked it before going all in. 3. I wish they did a family pass that you could share an unlimited membership with your s/o. For myself and my s/o Orange Theory would be a supplement to other workout programs. Having two memberships for two people in one household gets a bit cost prohibitive. Overall: A must try. This is one of those classes where you get what you put into the workout, but you are motivated to put in as much effort as you can. No matter what your fitness or skill level you can jump right in and have a fun workout in a no-judgement atmosphere.

I'll start with the good: always a great workout. Now to the bad: I've found a couple of the instructors, particularly Rachel, passive aggressive towards myself and other clients. A few months ago a girl and I couldn't remember the exercise to do after completing the rower exercise, and the instructor came over and asked aloud, with the mic on to the entire class, "so you don't feel like following instructions today, huh?". It wasn't a fun tease, with a smile at the end. It was condescending. This past week, she again called out another person next to me, whose monitor was off, in front of the entire class, telling them that they needed to reset their monitor and went on further to imply they were cheating. Again, it was the tone and the delivery and that it was done with everyone watching. It was done without giving that person the benefit of the doubt. None of it makes sense. Its horrible to be treated this way. Its horrible to watch others treated this way. I decided to post this message here instead of emailing directly due to the reviews online about their management, and feeling doubtful that I would get a respectful, compassionate response. Rachel, I do hope you evaluate how you treat people. A fitness instructor should be encouraging, supportive and your biggest cheerleader.

  • S S

If I could give 0 stars, I would. I joined one of my friends in several guest sessions before buying a membership. Workouts were good and coaches were decent. The manager (her name is Kristin) is atrocious and 110% incompetent. My heartbeat sensor was not functioning one week and then on another occasion I had some problems with booking sessions on the Orange Theory app. Her typical response to anything I asked is "I will look into it for you". Guess what? She NEVER gets back to you. NEVER. I phone and leave messages, and she does not return the call. I send emails and she does not reply. Why can't she have the professional decency to actually RESPOND? When I resort to asking her questions in person, she makes up some bogus answers that make no sense at all. To the people who own Orange Theory in Calgary, hire a better manager who addresses your client's concerns. I would NOT refer anyone I know to Orange Theory until there is a manager who actually "manages". You have the wrong person representing your brand and you are losing money $$$.

  • Karen Van Kampen

This is one of the better training programs I have used. I loved that more sustainable growth in fitness was encouraged vs. pushing yourself beyond your limits which is more typical in the fitness industry. The trainers are friendly and highly competent in everything they do. The front desk are welcoming and make an effort to remember your name. The equipment is higher quality than any other gym I have attended. The only issue I found is that this place is geared towards people who can attend 5+ days a week. I find membership is too costly for me as I use a gym downtown during the week so Orange Theory was meant to only be for weekends during the winter (summer I am out mountain biking). Because the drop-in passes expire in such a short period of time, there is not a great way for someone to attend this place part time/seasonal. But if there was a downtown location, I would 100% be a regular member!

  • Pooja Thakurel

They promised they will not charge the credit until I come and try! Well I did not try, they deduct the first payment! I told them I am going out of the country.. refund the money.. the idiot dumb manager repeatedly said we can still offer the free classes and you can still try! Well if I don't want to, I am flying soon why would give such options!! When asked give me your head office information she replied I don't have it! Why are you paid as a manager dude! When told it's misleading for the customers she replies how ? Explain? Are you seriously dealing with your customer!! Do not join it sucks as it's service

  • Claudia Leung

The staff is very friendly at the front desk . They are able to answer your questions at any time or communicating on phone. Very clean and organized facilities. Everything is provided for you such as lockers and personal hygiene. When I had my first class last Monday, the instructor always kept track to seek if you are at the same pace. She is very friendly and willing to help as well as giving very detailed overview of the class. My heart beats faster while exercising. The most concern of this fitness center is the cost. It is too expensive for people to join a session per week or month after their free class.

  • Derwyn Costinak

I appreciate Orange Theory's use of the heart rate monitor to ensure that one is neither working too hard or not hard enough. This is especially important to older guys like me who are getting back into a regular workout routine... The staff at the Kensington studio are very knowledgeable and easy to talk to. They're always glad to see you and are very encouraging. Perhaps most importantly, they make newbies feel at home and comfortable and so reduce the nervousness that might come with someone getting into this for the first time. And they work hard to remember your name!

  • Alina Visi

It's all supervised and I don't need to think what's next. The machines are really nice - I never liked a treadmill until OT. I can see where i am at on the screen - it motivates me mentally to push for more. I never thought I would like OT style, but it got me and I keep coming back. I like it when the instructor is on top of things and there is no chaos in the class - my favourite is Rachel, for a multitude of reasons. I never knew who decides how a workout looks like, but somehow Rachel's classes always feel good both during and after.

  • Deanna Louise

I’ve been loving the workouts and the staff are extremely friendly and SO helpful. A few weeks ago I showed up to a workout without my (necessary) running shoes. The staff manning the front desk took pity on me and offered to reschedule my class for another day without penalty (there is normally a mandatory 8 hour cancellation policy and a penalty for cancelling after the cut-off). That was kind enough! But I was actually able to take the class in the end because coach Cara leant me her own sneakers! Talk about above and beyond.

  • Dani Smythe

This is a challenging but accessible workout! The class is split in half with each group doing either a rowing and floor workout or interval training on the treadmill. Halfway through the hour, the groups switch. It's really motivating to see your heart rate and calorie burn on the screen. You can make the workout more challenging as your fitness improves. All done in 60 minutes, so it's a great way to get a solid workout in quickly. Really enjoy coach Cara's workouts in particular!

  • C L

Love this place, just recently started with them and the workouts are really fun and have great variety, trainers are very motivating and engaging, atmosphere and community are well worth it. The only thing I’d like to see more of, and only from some of the trainers is a little more hands on coaching with teaching form. It’s obvious some people have not had a lot of experience in the gym and could use more help to ensure they’re not going to get hurt. Otherwise such a great place.

  • Alvia Shafeeq

I was charged $156 in July 2020 after repeatedly having asked to cancel my membership during COVID lockdown. I also called back to have those charges reversed as I had e-mail proof asking for cancellation of membership. The charge were never reversed and I have not received any response till today. EDIT: The charges were reversed and the manager got back to me. Other than the one bad experience, I actually had a great time going to OTF Kensington and really enjoyed the workouts.

  • Marissa Aurora

I've been going here for 2 years now and I love the experience I get. Going to Orange Theory has helped me reach my fitness goals while still feeling as if I'm part of a community which are important to me. The staff welcome you by name and are always so friendly and coaches work with you making sure you're doing movements correctly and cheer you on. The measure taken during Covid have made the space safe and kept it clean. Big fan of the OT team

  • Krystal Glavic

Terrible “welcome”… it’s clear they don’t like others using their club. Came from a different province and instead of being welcomed in any form, was called out/treated differently from the very beginning. Owner was quite aggressive, and I use the term appropriately. I was made to feel awkward both times I was there, would not support or recommend - from someone who always makes sure I google review something positive when I can. Be warned.

  • A G

This studio is just lovely - the staff is so kind and the class is hard but I am still able to participate after going without exercise for most of the pandemic. The classes are fun and other students are super encouraging! A very accepting place where anyone can get a good workout, from the super fit to the super soft (like me!). Studio manager Jenna is so great, she made sure I felt comfortable and is so supportive!

  • Eilleen V

Love OT! The workouts are great - challenging, fun and always changing/never boring. The facility itself is excellent as well. Organized, clean and well maintained. I recently signed up at the Kensington location after moving nearby but have been an OT member for years. The staff and trainers here have been awesome thus far - shout out to Jade for being particularly helpful in getting me all set up.

  • Perry Chen

To me, its still the best 1 hour workout you can ask for. I have over 500 classes and I keep coming back for more. The routines are always evolving which make them just as challenging now as they were back at class #1.Whether you're someone new to exercise or looking for a great compliment to your current routine, I highly recommend trying out a class. I guarantee you'll be hooked just like I am.

  • Josh Smith

Cara is for sure the worst coach I have experienced at Orange Theory (surprise, she is the head coach at Kensignton) Have been going to OT for nearly 3 years. Love the brand, love the workout, nearly never run into bad coaches. Hence my review. Huge stickler on the ever changing 'rules' of the gym and not friendly at all. Hardly representative of a brand that charges $200/mo for a membership.

  • Chaotic Rich

This is the place to go for a killer workout. My girlfriend suggested we do this this together, and I couldn't be happier. This is a great mix of cardio, and core workouts!! They offer many different time slots, including 5am on Tuesdays and Thursdays. If you are serious about getting into shape, this is the place to go. Use my name Richard Ulm as a referral.....

  • christine chateau

I love that I don't have to think, that I get cardio and strength training in one workout, the coaches push me more then I would on my own, tracking how hard I'm working helps me know when I'm slacking. I always feel challenged and I love the loud motivating music! It's been the most consistent workout I've done in years! I LOVE orangetherory Kensington!

  • Jana Shaskin

It’s some of the most difficult workouts I’ve ever done but OTF shows me what I’m capable of. It’s motivating, and it feels like we are all a team as we sweat through each session. I see progress regularly whether it’s in my own body, speed or incline on the treads, weights on the floor or strength on the rower. I honestly can’t get enough.

  • Delilah Dann

Had my first class today, which was free so that’s awesome. I tried some new things and got in a great workout, love the social aspect of it. All staff were friendly, open and helpful. I wasn’t ashamed to ask for assistance and staff was also very patient. I left feeling motivated and excited for my future with them as a member ❤️

  • Kaitlyn Lopes

Showed up 25 minutes early for class after travelling an hour from the NE and they wouldn’t let me in class claiming I needed a full half hour to “meet the instructor”. Pretty ridiculous if you ask me. If you’re considering this gym, just go to Barry’s Bootcamp or Crush Camp instead - great facilities that won’t turn you away!

  • Ria Thomas

I am in love with OTF! I started 6 months ago and I can’t get enough! Even though the format is the same, they come up with different ways to challenge yourself and improve your strength and stamina. Coaches Kim,Kathryn,Victoria and Julie are phenomenal and keep encouraging us to strive for more!

  • Shauna Hogan

I've been going here for 2 months and i love every minute of it. The staff are fun and friendly and coaches always keep you motivated and help when you need to correct your form so you don't hurt yourself. Pricey, but well worth it if you're serious about your health or just keeping fit.

  • Eden M

Amazing experience ! Have tried Barry’s before but found that Orange Theory better suited my fitness goals. Had Coach Sam as an instructor as well and she was awesome - full of energy and gave very supportive and detailed instruction. Highly recommend taking her class!!!

  • Ann Ruth

I attended the March 16 session at 1:15 PM and the instructor/coach was very welcoming to me and supportive throughout the workout where I needed corrections to my form in order to prevent injury. I love going to this location for my workouts when I am in Calgary! Annj

  • Chris Clark

Listen, my arse is super lazy. I enjoy OTF as each workout session is approx 60 mins, guided and thought out. Staff and coaches are a good time. It's also conveniently located near my work, thus easier to attend. Activities roll through treadmill, weights and rowing.

  • Sydney Wagner

Amazing coaches and probably one of the best workouts I’ve done! I go to the gym 4-5 times a week usually but find mixing in Orangetheory 2-3 times a week keeps me on my toes and my workouts varied. Love this location and all the staff, would 100% recommend it.

  • David wardrop

Matt kellet is a joke, I've been owed $156.45 since January 28th was contacted July 21st and he mentioned the "cheque was in the mail and thank you for my patience" it is now july 29th and I'm having to go pick up the cheque from the gym it was never mailed.

  • Christine East

Love this OTF location. The trainers are great, the equipment is well maintained, and the facilities are spacious and comfortable. My husband and I have been to 4 different gyms in 3 different cities, and Kensington, our home gym, is our favourite.

  • Vinky A

This is a great workout! You get a combination of running, rowing and weights. All you have to do is show up and you get a great workout coached by some awesome OTF Coaches (that keep you accountable!). I highly recommend giving it a try.

  • Coconuts

Chill out on the cold calling and texting. Seriously. Are these reviews and ratings real? It's amazing that roughly the same # of people have commented on each location and given roughly the same rating. Talk about slick.

  • Janell Truong

Orange Theory is a great workout. The coaches are fantastic and are super helpful. They take the time to make sure everyone is doing everything correctly, they motivate you and are there to answer any questions.

  • Victoria Rose

A great all round gym experience, coaches and front desk team are great friendly and supportive..and the workouts are awesome..a good variety a workout that is fun yet challenges you so you never get bored!

  • Jenny George

I started my journey only a few months ago and already see great results. The staff are great, they greet you by name when you enter the studio and the coaches are amazing. I wouldn't go anywhere else now.

  • ashley hudon

The staff is very kind and welcoming! The coaches are always pushing you to be your best and strongest self! If you want a community and a journey to a healthier lifestyle, Orangetheory if for you!

Dynamic and variable workout, good people and staff, and good overall total body workout. An excellent facet of OTF is that you can work our nationwide, nice if you travel.

  • Kimberley Fraunberger

My favourite place to work out indoors in the city! The front desk staff are incredibly friendly and helpful and the coaches are the best. Give it a try, if you haven't!!

  • D W

I was injured from a move in the class and when I wanted to speak to the manager to extend the deadline for my pass to give me some time to recover , I didn't hear back.

  • Blake S

I joined on a whim when they had a promotion going and I absolutely love it! Great and challenging workouts, friendly and encouraging staff and coaches.

  • Tracy Scott-Cooper

25 crazy motivating classes, pushing me more than I could myself! Result... first 10 k run in years in 1 hour!! Friendly, fun, experienced! Love it!!

  • Jacqueline Sitter

I was not verbally told to come in 1/2 hour early. They do not allow unvaxxed who have completed a Covid test. They do not screen for Delta or Mu.

  • Michael Lazarowich

If you're looking for a place that will certainly help you with your fitness goals, mind, body and soul look no further. This place is awesome!

  • Alex W

Very overpriced for what you get, was $200/mo when I was going. And if you quit, they phone relentlessly to try and get you to sign back up.

  • Greg Griffith

Right from the time you enter any studio the motivation is put forward to allow all members to get the most out of every workout

  • Sonia Kernan

Orange Theory is a relaxed and fun place to workout. The small group workout insures some personal attention from the trainer.

  • Alli Brook

I have been going since it opened and love the classes. All the trainers are great and the front desk staff have been friendly

  • Veronika K

Was going to give this place a try but saw some horrible reviews about poor service and horrible management. No thanks !

  • Cali Lowe

The classes are a lot of fun, membership here is pretty pricey especially when you also have to pay for parking!

  • Bruce Ayrton

Well trained enthusiast staff. Pumping good tunes. Always fun and challenging enough to bring on the big sweat.

It can be a hella workout. The gamification of exercise; the continuous heart rate monitoring is pretty cool.
