I've been to quite a few gyms and have had 4 different personal trainers and I've definitely never experienced personal training like I have at this downtown gym. First and foremost, Nathan has been phenomenal. When I first started training here I had a different trainer who ended up leaving (for whatever reason) while I was on a break/vacation. Since having Nathan as my trainer, I have seen monumental improvements in my physical and mental health. First, physical health. When I started, I had issues with my wrist, back, and knees and just thought it was going to be a permanent thing for the rest of my life and to just be mindful with it. With Nathan's coaching I have had NO flareups in my wrists for MONTHS, my back pain is almost negligible, and knee pain is a thing of the past. Having someone who is focused on my posture and lifting safety more than just how much I can lift has been an amazing experience that I haven't had before. He is mindful of injuries, considerate when truly gassed or struggling, but he knows the right level of motivation to keep you going. Because of the focus on mobility and what area's to strengthen, I now stand tall and with my chest held high, because I can actually hold that posture without pain! The man is magic! Secondly, mental health. I know it is not part of his job description and is not something that most trainers seem to do (at least the previous trainers I've had over the years), but Nathan is attentive to my mental health and state, and always accommodates. He instilled in my breathing techniques that not only benefit while working out, but they also calm down some of my greater anxiety attacks. (Again, he is magic). When times are hard, he checks up on me and encourages me to get to the gym, even if it is a day of mobility more so than strength training, just to get me out of my slump and focusing on my health. He understand the human side of the business, and I think that is what puts him leagues above the rest of the trainers I have had. It's not necessarily about how much weight he can get me to lift, but about my overall health improvements, mental and physical. Lastly, HE IS A FANTASTIC HUMAN BEING. Seriously. He is professional, through and through, but knows how to build a report with his clients that breaks down some of the toughest walls to begin trusting his knowledge and experience and to leave the fear of the gym and the training behind. I've been terrified of doing some things (like dead lifts) and now look forward to them. I trust him that he would never put me in a position that I would get hurt or feel uncomfortable. He's he best trainer I have ever had. That gym has a great asset with Nathan. And the gym itself is pretty too. I like historic buildings and the fact that the vault is still in the basement is nifty. Beware of taking the stairs from the top floor to the locker rooms in the basement after leg day. It can suck.

UPDATE: Manager contacted me directly and apologized for the inconvenience, her empathy towards my situation is commendable, she promised to train her staff to discern better a situation like the one experienced, after explaining the reason why they do not allow not members to use the facilities, she sided with me on this one as me and my mother did not represent any threat to the employees, members or the facilities. Her customer service surpassed my expectations and I'm thankful for her call. _____________________________________ REPLY TO THE OWNER: if you truly want to find a solution to this, find my membership in your data base with my name and last name as shown here and contact me directly. ______________________________________ I decided to post a review merely due to an unpleasant incident last night and I will proceed with an honest review of this specific location. Location wise is absolutely central, convenient and very clean gym, I moved from WG +15 and it's definitely an upgrade, really love the heritage look and style, other members are friendly and focus on their workouts, but this specific location has way too many cardio machines, people are constantly lining up for the squat racks, barbell benches and other non cardio equipment, the staff in general are very knowledgeable and ready to help the members but they lack a little touch of humanity, the incident was that my mother needed a washroom urgently and we were rushing to find one (after 7 - 8 pm there are no places to use around the area), so I thought to go to my Home Club (this location) who was a few steps away, and I proceed to politely ask the clerks for help (who btw know me, have seen my face constantly, and I was even having my gym tag on my hand), I begged politely if they would let me scan and let my mom use the toilets for a quick pee, that she needed it urgently, they refused twice even after begging them and stating that she could not hold it anymore, after they refuse access I left incredibly disappointed and very upset; the lack of compassion over the "only members bs" it's beyond me, I was not stranger in the first place and this was an emergency. I hope this review help the management to help their staff to discern better when a situation requires and absolute refusal and when one can actually make an exception, as someone who has worked in customer service for more than 10 years, I know this is possible, and it's not like we looked like addicts or trouble people, and I truly wish this experience will never happen to their love ones specially if they have a medical condition that requires an urgent service like this.

DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY OR TIME WITH GOOD LIFE OR THIS GARBAGE LOCATION & SLEAZY TRAINER, MIKE. During covid I was Swindled into a gym training membership by some guy named Mike, told me at the time my training would only be for a mere few sessions, however that was not the case. It was a years worth of Level 4 or whatever at 500.00 bi-weekly. During Covid, Goodlife would send out emails notifying customers that their membership would be frozen till such & such date. However, that was no the case what so ever as they would unfreeze it during certain times take the 500.00 delegated for gym training however gyms were closed and supposedly my trainer would set up online sessions, not ONCE did he contact me. Not once. After months of realizing now that I had probably about 20 sessions of training, I called the gym to notify them I was moving back to BC, where at their locations it was MANDATORY to be vaccinated. Goodlife customer service didn’t really have a option for me, and choose to continue charging my credit card without any options. I decided to close my account and pay the full 2500.00 Cancellation fee, even though I STILL had about 20 sessions left but I decided to forfeit this as this gym has the WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE IVE EVER DEALT WITH IN MY ENTIRE LIFE. So I made the call and cancelled everything to do with this gym… or so I thought. Two weeks ago I received a email, a email ( not even a phone call to notify me that I have another payment due, I shrugged it off thinking it was a mistake, however just this past Friday I received another email stating I owe double The money. I’ve gone back into my history of emails during covid & received countless emails restating that my account was frozen, however after just reviewing my bank account noticed that GOODLIFE had no issues double dipping into my bank account while sending emails notifying me my account was “ frozen.” This is by far the WORST GYM, I would never recommend anyone to come here. There are plethora of awesome independent personal trainers in Calgary, those who won’t rip you off especially during a pandemic. - disappointed with this Gym. Horrible customer service, and would not recommend MIKE to anyone. If ANYONE is looking for a personal trainer, I would recommend IG : UGBfitness on IG, I believe he used to work for GL, before quitting & going independent. I’ve worked out with him a handful of times & what I can tell you is he’s very professional & you don’t feel ripped off when leaving a workout.

It's a great gym. Firstly, the staff there are really chill. A few do try and push that you need a trainer, but it's all good. It's their job. Besides that, they get pumped seeing your results and always greet you with a smile. There will always be bros at a gym. That's fine. They like to walk around carrying invisible watermelons and not wipe down their machines, though. Thanks, Douche Baggins, now I smell like ass sweat and Axe spray. Nothing to do but watch them throw towels on the floor in the change rooms at the end of a workout. The bros don't take away from the experience of the place though. So many machines you could ever want to use. Depending on the time, all used up. How nice! That's really nice to see. A gym that busy is doing something right. It gives the other gym goers opportunities to try other machines. The rowing machine handed me my ass a couple weeks ago! The price is great. Very cheap. For a busy downtown gym, I was really surprised by that. That's why I signed up for two years. I'm taking advantage of that. Don't be fooled by the negative reviews. A gym is what you take away from it. If you go by a rude staff member, the locker room smell, not enough free weights, too many people blablabla, you'll be missing out on a nice gym with people who mind their business and staff willing to answer any questions. My only small complaint is the hours. I wish it were 24/7! Maybe lack of staff, security, etc. prevents the potential. Who can say. The area does get sketchy in the late hours.

Let's start with the good; it's a beautiful location. They have done a brilliant job paying homage to the esthetic of the building, as it is an old bank. Great marble entrances, very high end furnishings, beautiful space to spend time in. Very large space, the variation in the cardio equipment was great. The locker rooms are well setup and *very* clean, the same goes for the showers. No, to the not so good. First off, the weighted cable machines they have at this location are the ones that move with you. The weights on these machines are not designated by their weight, but by a number. I'm sorry, but unless you have a guide to what the numbers mean, I don't know how heavy "weight 15" is. Secondly, when I first got there I asked for a towel, they said it was a half hour wait and I could only have 1 as they have a low supply. When I was done and went for my one allotted towel, it took forever to get one as they were arguing with me about whether I had towel service or not, which I do. They said I could have one for a fee, which at that point I was like can I just please have a towel. I work in customer service, just call it if there's ever a disagreement and give the client what they want. The second floor is hard to navigate as it doesn't fully encircle the gym. As another reviewer said you have to be gentle as they have offices under the free weights. I'm rather disappointed as I've never had such a difficult time with Goodlife, and I've been to 8 locations around the city.

I have been with Goodlife over 2 years. I really enjoy the membership with Goodlife due to reasonable price and convenient where have lot of locations. I enjoy work out regularly. However, the time changing for workout recently does not fit my workout schedule. My off work is 4:15 and arrive the club is 4:25. unfortunately, they only allow till 4:45. Therefore, I decide to cancel my membership. When I call in the guy told me I can't not cancel and get refund due to I paid in full and corporate membership. The guy try to convince to put on hold until December or next year. In this case, I need to stop workout? that is not really responsible answer. When reviewing the corporate membership's advertising, the web stated "When employees live the good life, so does your organization." and "Give your employees the good life with exclusive Corporate Memberships that help them stay healthy for less." How can this statement reflect Goodlife is truth? just ask to put on hold and stop the workout? does this make sense? This is not the way to do business. The cancelation isn't the reason I don't want to go or make excuse to get refund but this is due to your business does not have the fitting time to allow me for workout. I won't and never recommend any friends, families and employees to sign up and especially pay in full for this stupid cancellation rule. I already paid a full year with only use for few months. The rest of the money they will take it like robbery...…...

Been going here for a few months and usually everything is alright. Today, there was a trainer there I haven't seen before, the girls at the front said her name is "Laurence" or "Sharice" don't know for sure. But when I walked in, this girl and the usual girl that wears wrist braces were at the front desk, one on the computer and one on her phone. Neither even looked away from their screens, then Lawrence goes "what can I do for you??" In an annoyed voice. I had to give my phone number to scan in today cuz I forgot my key tag, and even if I did have my key tag they had the scanner behind the desk so I would have to wait for them to help me regardless. Anyway I go in and am doing my workout and that trainer was working w a client in the same area and she keeps looking me up and down and giving me looks. Then I'm trying to put my weights away and 2x she steps in front of me and I say "excuse me" and she barely takes a step put of the way and doesn't even look at me or anything. Sooo rude. With the amount of complaints the front desk girl gets, not sure how she still works there, and then this girl should not be at your entrance making a really bad first impression for people coming in. The younger girls usually there in the afternoon are way more pleasant and actually smile and greet you.

This location is awesome, the layout is good, and everyone there is very friendly and cool EXCEPT for one girl who is a complete rule Nazi at the front desk. Unlike everyone else who works there she prioritizes following 'policies' to a T, even at the expense of customer relations. If you want to use a 3 day pass you'll have no problem, unless she's working, in that case you better make sure its not close to expiration, has the correct location on it, you know what trainer gave it to you and have a legal witness to you receiving it or else its a no go- which totally makes sense because turning someone away at the front door on a technicality is far more beneficial than potentially acquiring a new customer. If you want a towel she will perform a full background check including (but not limited to) actually pulling up your account to see if you have towel service and ensuring you've only grabbed one that day; surprised she doesn't pull your credit score and ask for a co-signer to ensure you return it. The rules are the rules and I understand that, but also for sure calm down, you're running a gym not a maximum security prison and it leaves a real bitter taste in your customers' mouth when someone power trips over tiny things like that. Other than that element, great gym.

UPDATE It’s been two months and it’s still a continuous issue…don’t get me wrong the personal trainers are very kind people just trying to do their job. But it’s seriously impossible to get a full workout in this gym. Very cramped for weight lifting, soooo many broken machines . I swear they don’t maintain the machines at all they be squeaking and stiff as hell. Personal trainers saving many machines with their bags and other items when they aren’t using the machines at all. Don’t even get me started on the amount of dust on EVERYTHING (I don’t think they do a proper clean there was a bandaid on the ground by the squat racks for 3 days in a row….) Bit the bullet and swapped gyms a week ago, sucks because the building is gorgeous just truly poorly maintained and managed. Literally the worst gym have fun fighting personal trainers who hog all the equipment and put there stuff on other machines to “save” them while they take forever on another machine. This gym is small as it is why have a million personal trainers? Maybe close the gym for an hour for personal trainer hour opposed to making people pay for membership just to prioritize those who are getting personal training…

I've been training at this gym with my personal trainer, Myles for several months now and its been fantastic!! Today I down 20lbs and its all thanks to Myles' coaching, dedication and commitment to helping me. I've been at my company for 10 years and I recently found the courage and self esteem to apply for a new position (and I got it)! I really enjoy working out with Myles because he's so easy to talk to and he really cares about my progress. He not only trains me but he educates me when we are in strength mode or endurance mode and what that all means. If you're looking for a great trainer that has your best interest, go ask for Myles! In regards to this particular gym, its so unique. I love the proximity to the Ctrain and its right on Stephen Ave. The facilities are clean and there is plenty of staff available to help if you have any questions. The staff are friendly, polite and easily approachable. I never felt intimidated or judged when I'm at this gym. There have been a few times I forgot my towel and they have no hesitation in lending me one. I know they aren't suppose to but it just shows their customer service is 100% Thank you Myles and Goodlife!!~~ =D

The gym is beautiful and generally not packed but agree with most reviewers the layout is terrible. If you want to lift free weights or use the squat rack don’t go at lunch or right after work or there’s a good chance you will have to cycle in every 10 minutes on an available bench, or not at all, barely any room to stand behind a bench in the mirror either... Before it opened , and in the original floor plan, it looked like they were going to put most of the circuit machines and the cardio theatre on the mezzanine level, which would have made a lot more sense. Now there are just vast aisles surrounding the main floor cardio equipment where they could put many more squat racks, free weights, dedicated benches and essential equipment that’s missing from the gym. I guess upstairs is the only wall suitable for full mirrors but that could be fixed with a double sided free standing wall somewhere in the middle of the main floor. People on the street want to see iron being pumped not people slogging away on the elliptical. Get rid of a few elliptical machines and do it Goodlife, please pretty please!

In November I went to cancel my membership at this location and was instead convinced to just put a hold on my account. I said I wanted it held until the summer and was planning on using my schools gym. Two months later the hold came off my account without my knowledge or consent. However, I did not notice until August since during the pandemic no one was being charged fees. I have been charged extra fees. I emailed customer service asking for a refund and have received no reply. Don't know why the employee only put a two month hold when I clearly requested longer, and now I have to jump through hoops to get my money back. Uodate: They refuse to refund my money even though an employee accidently put a 2 month hold when I requested the hold be held in place for as long as possible. Was assured that the hold was done. Defs feel like this place is running a scam. Talk people out of leaving the gym so they can keep their money and talk them into a hold instead. Then remove the hold and hope the customer doesn't notice so they can keep stealing your money. This place is a scam. Avoid at all costs.

Beautiful gym! I live closer to another one but go here: this one is visually stunning and you will often see people on the street peering in to admire the ceiling, pillars, staircase and other architectural elements within. Most staff are especially friendly and helpful. Shout out to Sarah (front desk) for always remembering my name, offering me a towel and wishing me an enjoyable workout, Emily, Amy and Gavin for their friendliness, Eoin for being open to discussing my training needs and the cleaners who have people constantly walking in the way of their mopping and polishing but always have a smile. A special shout out to Myles Stetch, my personal trainer who is by far the best trainer I have had to date and a kind gentleman. He is certified in Neuro Kinetic Therapy and Olympic weightlifting coaching and displays a great deal of patience and professionalism. Something to note: this location has more cardio equipment than weight lifting ones and can be quite busy around 5-7 pm

I've had Nathan as a personal trainer for over a year now. He's very knowledgeable and passionate at what he does and has changed my life for the absolute best, not only has he changed me physically but mentally too. I was very shy in the beginning, insecure of my abilities and of the way I looked. Nathan has pushed me to my limits in many occasions and has taught me that with perseverance, hard work and dedication anything is possible. He has started a fire in me to always do better whether that is training harder or making life decisions. I'm definitely not the same person I was a year ago. I feel very strong and with more confidence than ever. I will forever be thankful to have lucked out to have a trainer that cares so much about his clients and that is my biggest cheerleader even when things get hard and you want to give up. I don't know what I would do without him!! Also the gym is gorgeous and well kept.

I had called 20 minutes in advance to make sure I was able to drop in, asking if I needed to book, have ID ready etc. They told me I was definitely able to come and drop in. I drove and found/paid for parking and went inside to drop in and they told me the person that was able to help me drop in left 10 minutes ago. This was around 730pm. I explained that I had called and was promised to be let in. The front desk lady was short and unsympathetic. “There’s nothing I can do for you” is all she said. She seemed happy to turn me away. I told her they should have disclosed I would only be able to drop in if I showed up in the next 10 minutes and she said “they leave at different times of the day so there’s nothing I can do for you here.” Anything I said she was quick to dismiss me by saying there is nothing I can do for you. Really unhappy I commuted and paid for parking to be greeted so harshly.

  • Janet Maclean

This particular location is sub par. The staff are amazing and as always the fitness classes rock (although I wish they were full length classes). The part of the gym that is really lacking is the space. There is NO room for free weights, ab work outs, stretching etc. The change rooms are absolutely horrible you are shoulder to shoulder the entire time trying to access your locker. There are big useless cushions that block access to the lockers so you have to hop over them or ask people to move while they are getting naked. The change rooms have NO ventilation and with the hair dryers going constantly it's like a sweaty steam room. I will be ending my membership as soon as the gym in my office building opens up. It is unfortunate because I really like other goodlife facilities, I just think this one is a huge swing and a miss.

  • Samuel Clayton

Terrible gym and even worse staff. I am from Edmonton so I have only worked out here once, but the gym has a terrible layout, and the area to do compound lifts is incredibly small. The bench's are literally pushed up to the wall so it makes it nearly impossible to have a spotter. I had a terrible customer service experience with Jonathan who I assume works on their sales team. I was asking what the rates were for each of the membership packages (Essential, Ultimate, and Premium). He said I needed to come in and meet within the next 10 minutes for him to provide that information. Extremely pushy high-pressure sales that forcibly left me speechless. Aside from the very cool old bank atmosphere, I would not recommend GoodLife Fitness in any way.

  • Kevin James

Tough one to review, I do like it as my gym but there are some notable drawbacks. Pros: Clean gym, friendly staff, cool looking interior since they kept the old bank features Cons: Unique layout limits space which means it feels like it is missing some pieces of equipment (hack squat, decline bench, to name a few), dumbbells only run up to 75lbs, and as others have mentioned one of the leg machines has been broken for months now. The other issue is the hours, they're only open until 10pm weekdays and 5pm weekends - I was told months ago when I joined the hours were about to be extended. Doesn't need to be a 24/7 location but really 11pm or midnight weekdays and 8pm weekends would be a huge improvement.

I have been training at goodlife for 2 months, located at 8Ave Dowtown. I would like to congratulate Amanda for her great work, since the first day I arrived at the gym, she has always supported me with my doubts. I understand that if I'm at Good life it's because this employee is part of it. My first time, I had a lot of difficulty with English and she, together with Logan, gave me a great impression and experience. It's good to have employees like Amanda. In general I would like thank you for all employees that has patient with me, because I usually speak a lot to train my english :) I understand that our culture is different and I need learn about the culture Canadians person. Go train, Go Ahead.

  • Cecilia Hoover

Staff is friendly. Gym is always clean . I like it on the weekends in the morning (8am) because it’s not too busy. I live close enough to walk. Three things I wish were better though: - there is no reasonably accessible parking (for those very cold days) -there are only washrooms on the basement level - two floors down from the squat racks and free weights - I don’t like the “hoist” equipment at all - it’s odd in that it moves your entire body - plate loaded equipment or even the usual lifefitness machines would be an improvement. Otherwise, I can get a good workout in , in a chill environment and I plan my workouts accordingly. If I plan on using machines, I go to other GL locations.

  • angela holzapfel

This is a very small gym and it is very busy at noon and immediately after work. So, if you think you shouldn't have to wait your turn for a squat rack or bench, or are too selfish to work in with someone, you should probably go to a different location. The staff here is very friendly. The trainers are great and they will answer questions from anyone who asks. The front desk staff say hello and goodbye, unless they are all busy helping clients. It would be great if there were larger weight areas but they have to make due with the space available. The old bank is a beautiful setting and is bright and airy. If you can come in an off-peak time, you won't be disappointed.

  • Ishan Aggarwal

Very nice gym and mostly pleasant staff but the 1 lady on the reception. I have been to many locations in Edmonton and Calgary and by far the rudest GoodLife team member I've seen. She accused me of having entered "false" information onto their system as if I have any access to it. She yelled at me constantly repeating the problem I had stated to start with. I failed to understand why should I pay a drop in fee when one of her colleagues failed to properly renew membership. After a long day at work, didn't feel the need to explain someone manners so walked away from them never to return again. Very unhappy guest and business associate.

  • Chris

Ever since Goodlife Fitness opened this location on Stephen Avenue, it has been my favourite location. Having opened in an old bank and heritage building, there was a lot of concern about how Goodlife would handle re-configuring the space as a gym.... In the end, they configured less than they restored. The original plaster and lighting from the bank hangs overhead as you work out. The only knock against this location is its lack of a hot yoga space, which they have added to some of their newer gyms elsewhere. Otherwise: Great atmosphere, awesome fitness classes, clean gym, well kept locker rooms, and awesome staff. Full five stars.

  • Param Gill

The manager Amal Najem. Was not very polite in implying that I was condescending when writing to terminate my membership with GoodLife. There was misunderstanding of payments caused from their side. I was trying to be thorough in order for my bank account on file to not be charged (as it is my friends and he is doing me a favour to use it while visiting from abroad - this would be an inconvenience for him as well as not being fair to him) It would have been ok if she simply addressed her concern with me but no, she made an assumption about me and replied back in an aggressive manner which I believe to be quite petty.

  • Brent Whiteley

45lb plates here are insanely annoying to put on the barbells and take off, you need to use their red olympic plates but they have hardly any of those so you're stuck with the most horrible 45lb plates. Personal trainers are super annoying here. They have their clients do kettle bell walking workouts etc near the squat racks and it blocks you from doing deadlifts, also the only space to deadlift is just outside the squat racks but the personal trainers training clients on the squat rack are standing way back so you can't use the space. Gym is amazing for cardio and if you go at the right time everything is available.

  • Erin

Don't let the outside of the building fool you; they've converted and old bank into a Goodlife. The inside is really nice, and everything is still pretty spotless and new. Two group exercise rooms, lots of cardio and cable equipment. The only complaint I would have is that the free weights area is quite small (the upstairs area). There's only two squat racks and two benches, so if that's your go-to area, be aware you'll be waiting for equipment for a while during busy hours. That being said, if you work downtown and have a Goodlife membership, this location is worth checking out.

  • Ivan Sanchez

Me and my wife worked out here for 2 years. Great desk people, amazing personal trainers, beautiful location, but when her membership had troubles in their system, we were sent to this girl “Adriana” and her horrible customer service got us moving to a different franchise, we felt her communication, (phone and a email we were shown) was biased and very little professional, as like she didn’t care if we stayed so we left. If you decide to workout here and cross with her, hopefully you have a better experience than us. Thanks to the rest of the personnel there, you guys are great.

  • Katrerina

Jonathan is super pushy and signs you up for the platinum membership option and doesn’t inform you about the other packages available. He also promised a free gym bag, tank tops, coupons for GMC and protein shakers which I never received after 3 months of membership. Calling the customer service line is not an option and the front desk staff can’t help you with any billing problems and refer you to call a number that doesn’t work. The hours for this location are a joke considering other locations in Calgary are now back to 24 hours. Closing before 5pm is such a joke for a gym.

  • Who Me?

The actions and service of this location is exactly why I am canceling my GoodLife membership. The short haired motivator named Sarah has made quite the name for her self, I have heard from multiple people who are canceling their memberships as a direct cause of this employee and the managers response. If you are going to stalk members around the gym and write them up because you believe they didn’t wipe off equipment good enough, good luck keeping members. I sincerely hope that once the membership base shrivels up that head office shuts this joke of a gym down.

  • Alyssa Wilson

What I enjoy about Goodlife gyms is if you're a member from another province, then you can simply drop into another gym in another city. I really like this location, the equipment seems new, not worn out like other stations. The only downside is when guys gawk at you while on the treadmill or elliptical but you can experience that at any gym. My friend and I used to attend during Monday evenings but it seems really busy during those times, I suggest you go earlier in the days if your schedule can meet it. The locker rooms are very clean too.

  • Adam Broniewski

Location is fantastic. Has a dry sauna. Some areas upstairs with free weights are super tight and hard to move around during lunch hour. Classes are good with decent instructors, although some of the visiting instructors filling in were SUPER high energy. Men's shower drains could be cleaned out and sometimes smell in the morning. Staff is inconsistent with their towel policy in the morning. Some staff seem especially extreme in their enforcement of rules. The vibe of the gym is great. Feels very classy as it used to be a bank.

GoodLife on Stephen Ave downtown is the best GoodLife in the city by a mile. The staff are very friendly and helpful. The gym is professionally run and always in great shape. If you are worried about your safety during the pandemic, GoodLife has an excellent set up in place to keep you safe and healthy while you build that six pack back up. If you are considering joining GoodLife, go to this location and ask for Jonathan! He is always very helpful with any questions or issues I am having and especially helpful for new members.

  • V A

Hands down the most gorgeous gym I've seen. We came here to workout just because of the reputation and it was definitely worthy. We wanted to get a day pass as we were on vacation and this wasn't the closest gym to our hotel. The staff were super nice and helpful. When the computer malfunctioned and wouldn't allow the charge to go through, the manager allowed us to use the facility for free. The equipment were new and in great working condition. The interior of the building was just like movies and I'm glad they preserved it.

  • Thomas Rodgers

This Goodlife location has some of the worst client-relations I have ever experienced in dealing with any business. The staff will refuse to offer solutions to any problems with respect to bookings, memberships, etc. The most common answer you will hear from them is a “no” with respect to any request. I should note that the Mount Royal location, on the other hand, has wonderful people working there who strive to assist as much as possible. If you call Mount Royal, they will help where Stephens Ave will refuse to do anything.

How I wish this was my neighbourhood gym. I even have contemplated travelling to make it my home base. The change rooms are clean and spacious and there is a plethora of cardio equipment on the main floor. Some supporting posts in the middle of the room of the group fitness studio is a bit of a detractor.BUT i am so in love with the repurposing of this space (from a bank to a gym). I just love the vibe, the materials used in construction and just how awesome it is to stare up at that amazing ceiling (on the main floor).

  • Nik

I usually go to the Goodlife in the Brewery District in Edmonton, but I was traveling through Calgary to visit my friends and stopped over to this Goodlife. It’s by far the coolest Goodlife I’ve been to. I love that they kept the old Bank theme inside and haven’t turned it in to a ‘modern gym’. The weight section was a little small, I imagine during peak hours this would be a bit of an issue. Loved the locker rooms and the converted bank vault downstairs. Great location, I would definitely visit again.

  • yatna patel

The workout area and premises are really good with maintained hygiene in changing rooms and all the staff is really helpful. However NEVER TAKE YOUR MEMBERSHIP with JOHNATHAN, he will not give you full information and will sign you for premium or ultimate membership without asking your preference, and will deny to change it even if its his fault and won't even tell the manager about it. I had that issue, however the manager handled it properly and figured it out for me later on.

  • kenza Khreis

Kind, respectful, professional staff; I have been attending body pump classes, which are always fun (Vanessa Is my favourite instructor. She’s just too fun). It's the first time, and It’s been years since I have been a member; I’m sticking to a fitness center. I'm not bothered by staff being pushy and trying to sell others products or ask me out. The last experience I had at a center was horrible. Close by, the trainer's abuse was cruel and did not last longer than three weeks.

  • Joe Guevara

As a visitor from Toronto, this gym was an attraction of its own during my visit to Calgary. Apparently this was a converted BMO - still has the original vault and fixtures which made working out here really fun. Especially liked the touch of keeping the 60s vibe on the signage. Only downside was that there wasn’t a ton of new weight equipment (like the padded lifting platforms) in other gyms. I worked out here post vaccine passport so the gym wasn’t busy at all (lol).

  • Lee Zacharias

Overall not a bad gym. Tight quarters in some areas, including the free weight area which only has up to 75lb dumbbells, and feels quite congested if there’s more than 5 people in that area. Some of the leg machines have been broken for months now which makes it tonight to get a good leg day in, as there’s already very limited squat racks and leg presses. Also the hand dryer in the mens change room has been broken for months, overall just not in a hurry to fix things

  • aira mae baldonado

This gym is cool but, stop forcing people to get a trainer… my friend literally had to explain things to questions that goodlife shouldn’t even ask, if someone says they dont want the trainer program you guys offer, stop pushing it… also had trouble with my bank account because goodlife took out money and put it back (why put it back anyways) which caused me to pay $90 to the bank… wished they informed me first that they’re gonna take out that amount before they did.

  • Mia Pinsent

I think it's one of the best Good life fitness facilities out there (I have visited over 5 of those throughout AB). Very high ceilings and posh looking main hall with cardio equipment, mostly friendly staff (somehow creates a lot of "headspace") I enjoy body pump class - in my opinion the greatest body pump class is lead in that gym - on Thursdays at 5 30 pm (at least compared to the ones I visited by deerfoot mall, canyon meadows, 17th ave); very motivating coach!

  • Joshua

The experience at this gym is extremely dependant on what time you go. Early morning workouts don't have too much competition for equipment, but noon and early evening can be quite overwhelming. The equipment is new and in good shape, with additions and changes to equipment type, this gym has become more functional over the years. Free weights are in a tights spot, but with some courtesy the experience is enjoyable. The setting is excellent.

  • Ellen Ji

When I signed up for the training sessions I specifically asked the sales/instructor if the classes were free to cancel and he said yes you can cancel anytime for free. Two months afterwards I decided to not continue and they told me I had to pay 20% penalty fee which was $1200. I reasoned that the sales told me it was free to cancel they replied ‘you should’ve read the contract before you sign’, so I ended up paying the penalty fee.

  • Phil Morin

Beautiful building in a great location for downtown fitness goers. As many other reviewers mention, it's very heavy on the cardio machines while the free weights are relegated to a small section upstairs. Avoid the noon-hour rush if you want any chance of using the flat benches or squat racks. There are tons of free classes for all levels of fitness. Staff are friendly & helpful. The dry sauna in the locker room is a real treat.

  • Andrew M

This is the most ornate GoodLife in Canada. It feels more like a private club than a gym. It would not be out of place for someone dressed as a butler to offer you a glass of scotch and a cigar between sets. The four star rating is because the equipment selection leaves something to be desired. I did not have to wait for a squat rack or bench at 6am, but someone working out in the afternoon might have a different experience.

  • Jens S.

Wow - must see gym for everyone. The pictures speak for themselves. This former bank creates an amazing ambience to work out. Went there workday mornings and with the huge amount of equipment, there was never any wait time. The layout takes a bit to get used to but, hey, that’s also what makes the gym so unique. The staff was very helpful and friendly. My Rating: '4 Stars' = Very Good, '5 Stars' = Way Above Expectations

  • Neervan Anooroop

I am already a member of goodlife fitness from another city and i was told that i needed cancel that membership and pay the membership fee again only because i'm in a new city. Also, the gym is very limited in terms of weights. Overall, I found the service too business minded. The lady at the desk was really friendly but the fitness advisor was too pushy and barely acknowledged me when I said I did not want to enroll.

  • Meri Sarkisian

Got a membership yesterday at this location, Laura - the girl who was assisting me was wonderful. She was very kind, funny and understanding. She went through my goals very professionally and understood my approach to fitness and gym right away, so she recommended a membership that was perfect for my situation. Stefan at the desk was adorable too, he had a very nice chat with me and was just very lovely. Thank you.

  • Abdullah Jirjees

[UPDATED!] First of all I love this gym and all my next comments is wishing to see this gym better No1. No hack squad machine which I believe it’s important. No2. Dumbbells are up to 75lb!! I believe we need more at least up to 100lb No.3 shoulder press bench is only one!! Other than that everything this is awesome, the gym is so clean, well arranged all the time, trainees really know what to do. I love it.

  • Google review Reviewer

The gym itself is great. But I have no idea why they keep the lady at the front desk with the short dark hair and the wrist brace working there. Everytime I come in she is arguing with someone and there are multiple complaints and bad reviews about her. I have been personally been attacked by her on many circumstances. The last job she should be doing is anything customer service. Other than that great gym.

  • Art Serov

If you are looking for cardio machines come here and rejoice in the classic aesthetic of an old bank. How ever if you are looking to train using machines or worse yet the free weights, you are in for waiting in LINES. Yes, people will lurk around and crowd the very limited and small amount of space available for racks and any sort of equipment. If cardio is your game, once again, this place is for you.

  • Arlo Jay

The counter manager at this location called me after I left a bad review. She heard out my complaints, apologized on behalf of her staff, and took steps to make sure her staff knew how to better handle this type of situation in the future. Her empathy and understanding was much appreciated and I now feel happy to call this location my regular spot. Plus it is a gorgeous and clean facility.

  • Sam R

It's really a 5 star gym, having worked out anywhere that was so unique. Loved it. It lost 1 start because the sauna absolutely sucks. It's the worse, 20 mins there at the highest temperature and didn't break a sweat. Common, fix your sauna. And the towels are verrry flimsy. It's barely dry. It's not the cheapest gym in the city. Get some better towels. The vault was kinda cool tho

  • 王胤

Was treated with disrespect and dishonesty after joining the gym 2 weeks later by the same sales person who seemed to be super nice and friendly when selling me the membership. However want to say thanks to the receptionist girl with long hair who helped to solve my problem immediately and the manager who called to explain and apologize. That's why I give a two star instead of one.

  • Tony Irving

I enjoy this location. It is clean and equipment is plentiful for my routine. I don't agree with the reviews complaining about the front desk lady with short dark hair. I have always found her to be pleasant and polite to me. She seems to be a hard worker too, as I often see her on the floor cleaning, putting items away and restocking sanitization supplies. Overall a great gym

  • Ally Houseman

This place is the COOLEST. I have visited this location many times but the novelty of the old bank decor still blows my mind every time. It is rarely very busy in the evenings and the women's locker room is very large and clean. A wise range of equipment can keep your workouts fresh while you stair at the beautiful golden mouldings and light fixtures. Super friendly staff.

  • Michelle de Jeu

I have been trying to cancel my gym membership here for over two weeks and the manager keeps blowing me off. Won't speak to me when I come in person, won't take my calls when I call in. Payments have come out of my account since trying to quit and I keep getting ignored. This is a really poor way to run a business. I do not recommend choosing this fitness facility.

  • Alexander Nachef

The building in itself is beautiful enough to go back to minus the gym. ADD A GYM AND IT'S THE GREATEST PLACE EVER! The trainer quality there is above and beyond. A very knowledgeable group, they all have extremely great qualities and strengths. There is a trainer there with a big beard, he's amazing too. Definitely recommend going there for personal training!

  • Peter Milligan

The front desk receptionist - female with short dark hair and glasses wearing a wrist bandage - has to be the rudest individual I've ever met. Sneers at everyone, rudely stares at members and is overall an unpleasant person. The rest of the staff and the gym itself is fairly good but it can be tough to see past someone as off-putting as the receptionist.

  • Kyle Wilson

Really great gym. Criminally under used. I go around 4 every other day and never have a hard time getting on the equipment I want to use. Staff is always really friendly and supportive. My trainer Nathan has transformed my body... And has a beard shaped by the Gods! That being said.... Don't start going around 4.... Pick a different time. 4pm is mine!

  • Brendin Evans

Everyone should cancel their membership especially if you're a female. I found out that they allow their *MALE* cleanners that they employee through a third party, go into the woman's locker room, while women are using that locker room. My best friend of 10+ years had the worst anxitey attack I have ever seen in my life. You're disgusting GoodLife!

  • MyzticPanda16

I am here right now on a Saturday with the sign saying this gym opens at 8am. It is now 8:12am with the doors still closed. This is very frustrating some people still have to work on the weekend. There literally people waiting outside. Good life do better seriously maybe it’s time to switch Golds Gym honestly this is embarrassing

  • Chris M

Aesthetically this gym is amazing - the downside is how cramped some of the areas get due to the covid restrictions right now, which isn't necessarily Goodlife's fault as i'm not sure how you would avoid that. The weight area upstairs in particular felt very grounded when I visited this gym. Lack of parking can be an issue too.

  • M L

Like this club but it is time to move to the next phase of reopening - no 30 min shutdowns, sign up for general workout area, or limit of 60 mins. No other clubs are operating in this manner and they are operating safely. No provincial guidelines require you to operate in this manner. We are 2 months into reopening!

  • Stewart Gates

To expensive and they only allow 1 hour workout if you can even get in at all. Clearly Covid originally had some affect on them but they charged the full price despite being closed for 9 of the past 12 months, and only being open until 9 PM when actually open at all. So this place is definitely not a 24 hour GYM.

  • Crash Cours

Beautiful building. I usually go for a few machines, treadmill and spinning. I can't complain at all. The staff was polite, even if they are in the phone they still try and help. Love the layout, it all works for me. I haven't been to the free weights but the person who commented before me mentions them. Cheers!

  • Muna A

The gym is alright no issues with working out there, that's why i am giving it two stars But DO NOT book a trainer with jonathan he lied to me about booking me in when he actually didn't and wasted my time because i do not live anywhere near this gym! Very unprofessional behaviour and i was not happy about it.

  • Stephane Belley

Absolutely love this location. I love how it's in an old historic Bank of Montreal built in 1932!! They did a great job for the use of the space inside. Very close to the C-train as well which is super convenient for people who rely on Calgary transit. The staff are very friendly and helpful as well. …

  • Douglas Anderson

Beautiful building and equipment but some of the Personal Trainers there act like the building belongs to them and are quite rude. When you're trying to work out they act like you're impeding them training their clients and leave their stuff all over the place. Definitely going to train somewhere else.

  • Stacy Vanderburg

I love going to this GoodLife location. It is very centrally located, right by the c train line. It is very beautiful inside which inspires me when I am working out. There are lots of classes that happen here and the staff is very friendly. I just wish there was parking to drive to it on the weekends.

  • Lane Larochelle

Decent location, friendly staff. Really cool aesthetics of an old bank. 3 power racks, alot of cardio equipment, good range of kettlebells, minimal room room for stretching always full at peak hours. ** Don't like it when you squat or deadlift in socks.... kind of a joke, policy not stated anywhere.

  • James Cale

Good place in an attractive location downtown. Though more cardio than anything else it feels like. Definitely packed "before work, at lunch and after work" The pipes are original from the bank it seems so sometimes the showers might get cold, or the water taste is a little off from the fountains...

  • Christina

Beautiful space in terms of the building itself being a historical build, but the gym itself is small and lacks equipment or variety.. There's enough to get a decent workout in if you're downtown, but there's better equipped Goodlifes throughout the city. I go to this one only out of convenience.

  • Charlee Davies

The building is absolutely gorgeous, but since it's a historic building, maintenance is slow. Staff are polite and friendly. My only complaint would be, too much cardio equipment. I see my trainer Nathan pretty much everyday, and it's always the best part of my day... but don't tell him that.

  • Becky Ferguson

My go to gym during the work week. Loads of cardio equipment, however, they need a bigger weights section. During the week it's almost impossible to get near the free weights. They offer loads of different classes that are spread out during the day. I will be renewing my membership this year.

  • Emmet Adriaans

Beautiful gym with a unique vibe for workout! Front of house staff was super friendly and helpful (as I was visiting from out of town). No notable shortages in equipment for maintenance which is nice! This facility might be also one of the cleanest Goodlifes I’ve been to. A1 on cleanliness!

  • Marhy A

I was inside the sauna and the male cleaner came inside the washroom area. He didn't care and I feel violated. I was so scared in that moment. As the aesthetic of this gym is great but the management dont value their members. This the worst gym I have in my life. I will never go back again.

  • decaf espresso

the fanciest gym i’ve ever seen. i used to not enjoy coming here as it was always packed and not always the most spacious but now with all their covid measures i’ve been able to enjoy the free space inside. staff can be a little snobby but most of the time they’re friendly and professional.

  • Maan Gill

Love this gym! Very friendly and professional environment, super clean, took great initiatives to make the most out of Covid restrictions. I'm usually really self-conscious when I work out but the staff here really helped me overcome the difficult relationship I had with exercise.

  • John Manzo

Beautiful club in renovated early 20th century bank building. Class equipment, God-level showers in men's locker, everything top notch and on weekends unlike at the Mt Royal location it's not a bit crowded. I come to this location on weekends instead of my normal location at MRV.

  • Jay Wolf

Not really a gym, more of a hotel style fitness centre. Don't get personal training here unless you want to be treated as if you were dealing with a shifty used car salesman. Manager focus on being a top sales club and not on client results. Pretty much the goodlife mentality

  • Ninja Sloth

The women's sauna is never hot and takes an hour to heat up. Who has the time to wait for this? This is ridiculous! Other gyms take only 15 minutes. I have been telling the staff forever, and it has never changed, so it's frustrating trying to be healthy with this gym …

  • Trevor G.

Miserable staff, they always seem annoyed by anyone that walks in, no hello or goodbye like other employees in other locations. Prob the worst GoodLife in Calgary staff wise. Building is nice and historic, more cardio equipment than free weights but the place is well set up.

  • Hattie Cadwell

I had training with a lady named Jennelle for 7 sessions and it was great. She was very nice and patient teaching me what to do. Not only in the gym but also writing down so I could see visually on what a month would look like doing exercises on a weekly basis repeating it.

  • Kezia

I understand closing in response to the pandemic, but I do not understand closing without any notice whatsoever. All of my workout gear is inside my locker and I have no way of getting it. Members should have been given an opportunity to get their belongings. Please help!

  • Mike Glover

Generally a good club. Facilities are decent but the locker room can be crowded and availability of free weights and equipment can be limited during busy times (avoid lunch hour and between 4pm - 5:45pm). Beyond that, has about everything you'd need for a decent workout.

  • Azade Bezirgan

It’s so messed up that weekends they close at 5pm. So many times I forgot it and came it was closed. This needs to be fixed up but doesn’t matter im gonna change my membership to another location that is 7/24 open all week. Extremely disappointed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Leslie de

the place is right downtown the decor is an old bank so it's just freaking gorgeous best gym I've ever been to. The weights are a little bit lacking when it's really busy here just no space for many people so that's the only downside. Staff are wonderful here.

  • Jane Lo

I like this location. Usually quiet in the morning but busy after work. Well kept and maintained. One thing they need is better ventilation, it gets hot and steamy upstairs and downstairs and can be quite discomforting. Staff are super friendly.

  • Grant “Blizz” S.

From a strength lifter: Go to the Eau Claire gym. This gym is meh at best. Free weights are just tucked in a corner room with 4-5 benches, there's barely anything for bench press and a squat/deadlift area... However, the one thing this gym

  • Aryan Tyagi

The lady at the front desk with short hair and glasses her customer service skills are horrible. I don’t know what happened to her but she is extremely rude and doesn’t even greet you on your arrival and when you leave. Her expression are

  • Sarah Lang

As a Goodlife member of nearly a decade, this is easily the best Goodlife I have ever been to. Not only because it is architecturally beautiful, but the staff are extremely welcoming and warm. I’m so thankful to have this as my home gym!

  • Emily Allan

Very ornate and a beautiful place to work out. The free weights section however Is quite small and there is only two squat racks. It's very busy just before and after business hours so if you go late at night or on the weekend it's good.

  • Michelle Szkwarek

Andrew Complak has been a phenomenal personal trainer to my clients (I am a Physiotherapist). He has astounding knowledge and has the ability to collaborate with other healthcare professionals like myself to ensure his clients are well

  • KittyLePew

Location is convenient for those who work and live close to downtown. Definitely smaller than the other branches and not always open 24/7, It would be 24/4 as was explained by the staffs there. I suggest be mindful of their hours :)

  • kadreena s

Someone from you location called me and when I told her the plan options she offered were not what i wanted, instead of offering something better or graciously accepting. she laughed at me! rude, uncalled for and disgusting business

  • Drew Penny

It is a convenient location and people shouldn’t expect tons of equipment for a gym that used to be a bank, come on now. The only thing wrong is the staff seems particularly indifferent to customers compared to other locations

  • Juan Rojas

Decent amounts of equipment (3 squat racks!), though more free weights would be nice. Helpful staff and beautiful decor dating back almost to Calgary's founding! And if you live poor work downtown, the location can't be beat.

  • Giovanny Romero

One of the fanciest GYM I had been at, golden paint, luxurious stairs, and a big safe, made this place very unique, opened on the old Montreal bank building. Great location, 1 block from train and enough space to train.
