My mom decided to tell me if I wanted to join my siblings to go to an outside museum. I was truly intereSted but did not expect this! Barely half an hour from downtown Ottawa, so a full hour drive from my place in Gatineau! The whole experience was great! Despite the lack of farm animals on the day I was there, I truly enjoyed my experience. The whole vintage aesthetic of the village is beautiful and the renovated houses are beautiful! With houses, stores and different buildings of the time, it’s a nice experience If you want to have a journey to the past! Also on site were merchants and traders showing off their ware of steam engines to entertain and explain more about the time’s engines and ways of life! To add a cherry on top, wagon rides, renovated trains and tractors offer a nice tour of the premises. I’d be cutting this short if there weren’t so many great timely employees showing demonstrations and exhibiting attractions! On the day I went there was a Barbeque on site along with a little band of Cello, guitar and violin! I truly enjoyed being able to read about each building and their history along with who they belonged to/ their original placement. In short, for a day out, a learning experience or even to just get away from it all, go and see for yourself the Cumberland Heritage Village museum. You will not regret it!

A great experience for just about everyone I happened to be in the area running some errands when I saw this lovely recreation of what used to be the town about 100-125 years ago. The buildings are in great condition, the docents are excellent and helpful, all decked out in period clothing, speaking about the life experiences of their characters! I was there almost at closing time, yet they took me over the places I was most interested in seeing such as the one room schoolhouse. We talked about lots of things, such as demographics served, teaching conditions, students lives, lifecycle of the building (which was an actual school, not a replica) and the events surrounding its closure. All in all, CHV is a very engaging place, and it is a great outing, whether you are taking your out of town guests, your children or you just want to learn more about life in ON as it was during the Agricultural Era. NB: Pictures were taking by me during my visit.

I absolutely loved it! Very well organized, well kept and highly maintained. We got the chance to go back in time to the 1900s. The gentleman at the millsaw even did a demonstration for us. I loved the old school building, the church, the old train, the millsaw... There are some farm animals as well such as horses, bunnies, hens, cow etc. They had a scavenger hunt today and my children enjoyed their time doing it. They learned different things about the old day. This place is a cultural wealth, it is a real valuable heritage and a precious gem! Washrooms available, I would say stroller friendly, parking available and most of all they have a family package for admission of about 22$. Staff is very friendly, welcoming and professional. Open Wed. To Sunday from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. They host different events and post them on their social media platforms. A must visit!

Imagine stepping into a village frozen in the era of the 1920s-30s, a nostalgic time capsule waiting to be explored. Surrounding you are vintage homes, each piece of furniture echoing stories of a bygone era. The local press, school, carpentry, farm, garage, workshop, and church are pristine representations of that period. As you stroll, the townsfolk, draped in period attire, go about their daily lives. The village is buzzing with anticipation, as craftsmen are busy preparing for Christmas. With the hum of a 1930s machine, the carpenter skillfully crafts lathes, carts, and delicate wooden trinkets. The press churns out notebooks and gift bags using a 1920s printer, while the forge produces exquisite iron gifts. It's not just a visit; it's a mesmerizing journey back in time. Doesn't that sound enchanting?

We were visiting from Calgary and had a great time!! Our 14 month old had a blast and the 20 month old and 3 year olds we were with had so much fun! It's not too big a place to be overwhelmed, everyone was so friendly and informative. There was one gentleman who made the whole experience that much more incredible. He showed us the mill area closer and told us so much about all of the equipment and how it's been changed or maintained. He got the horses to a better viewing area for the kids and more. Our friends (locals) will definitely be bringing their kids back again soon. If we are ever back in Ottawa, we would love to come back. Highly recommend this place. It was very affordable. Pack your own lunch and have a picnic. It's great.

The Vintage Village of Lights is absolutely wonderful! You get to decorate your own cookies, build super cute crafts, eat roasted marshmallows by the fire, go on a lovely sleigh ride, meet Santa, and so much more. The staff are some of the nicest people I have ever met and they really made the experience that much more magical! Right from the employees at the front desk to Santa himself, everybody just seemed happy to be there and really cared that everybody enjoyed their experience. The light display and giant reindeer are breathtakingly beautiful and the grounds themselves are lovely. I was blown away with how much there was to do for such a small entrance fee. It really is fun for the whole family, not just for kids! Everybody really needs to check this out if they have the chance this holiday season!

  • Vitaliy

Historical village that has a lot to offer. There is a school, church, farms with piglets, turkeys, bunnies and other animals. Also, you can find horses, sheeps here. I was lucky to see how nails were done of steel with hand tools. They have other performances and as I know events list is on their site. Entrance is not too expensive (8.50$) and it's free for children under five. It's located near Ottawa river, but not in a walking distance. So there are not lakes or rivers. In general the museum is similar to first Canada village, but it's smaller and located much closer. Definitely recommended. 3 hours would be enough to see everything. I'd suggest to add some food courts here. They do not sell any food, so take it with yourself.

What a wonderful treat. We took our ten- year old grandchildren for a visit and even with the buildings closed to inside visits, you could look in through open doors and get a glimpse of life on a faming village almost 200 years ago. Virtually all the buildings on the site were moved from various locations in and around the small town of Cumberland, a twenty minute drive along the river, east of Ottawa. Heritage breeds of turkey, chickens and rabbits added to the authenticity. There is a covered outdoor picnic area and clean restrooms. The staff are knowledgeable and helpful. Best of all it only cost $20 Canadian dollars for a family of four. One caution, due to COVID restrictions you should book an appointment on line.

  • Bonnie Ashford

I am saddened that this museum is suffering possibly from lack of funding or imagination. I visited with young grandson in peak of summer and not much going on...We have been going there as a family for many years in winter and summer. The summer camp activity seemed to be only buzz. there was only one interpreter...the Carpenter so other than him we only had a conversation with the little gaggle of geese/ducks and then the 2 pigs .Maybe the Agricultural EXPERIMENTAL Farm in west end is getting all the attention but given the fast growing population of Orleans Cumberland Rockland I think some of those resources should be fairly shared with The Cumberland Heritage Museum which used to seem so vibrant.

  • Faith

I really enjoyed visiting this museum, and suggest it to anyone who hasn't had the chance to yet. They have a variety of historical buildings as well as staff that are informative and friendly. The museum itself is a nice walk, situated mostly outdoors. There are houses to check out, as well as animals which are super cute too! I recommend going during the summer as that is when the animals are there. Additionally, the staff that are in the different buildings have some fun little games or demonstrations of historical pieces.

Nice place to visit and learn about rural life back in the day. The site itself has clearly seen budget cuts and some of it has seen better days. The large garden patches for example were left unattended and just filled with overgrown weeds. There also weren't any entertainers on-site and we're told there used to be staff everywhere to provide information and activities so a lot of our visit was trying to figure out what that large machine did. There's very little information provided otherwise. There are plenty of picnic tables so bring a lunch. It should take a few hours to walk around and see everything.

*CYCLING REVIEW* Cute little walk-around village just outside of Ottawa. The commute from downtown by bike is very safe, and limited to bike paths and a few, low-traffic roads, and there are a few trees and fence posts that you can lock your bike to on arrival. Staff there are very knowledgeable and engaging. Lots of space for kids to run around and explore if they are interested. All things considered, this is an enjoyable, affordable, accessible family outing for people living in and around Ottawa.

Lots of agrarian history in one location. Many structures date to the 1800s. Many farm implements of the era on display. A working blacksmith. We took the opportunity to ride the miniature scale gas powered train. Coal burning locomotive and and all electric battery powered version are available. A tractor drawn carriage circulates for visitors from the reception building, a former train station, to the model train. Very good for children of all ages to visit.

The staff were amazing especially miss scare crow :) the ride around the property was great and we got lots of candy. Lots of heritage and reading I gave some insight on when I was a kid and used a wood stove :) The hot chocolate was absolutely dreadful unfortunately 4 of my kids got it and they said it tasted like vomit I did not believe them I tasted it myself and I threw them out besides that all was great especially miss scarecrow :) I would give 5 star if I did not spend 2.50 a cup on something I threw out.

Went there before the Covid-19 restrictions prevented from visiting site. Similar to what Magic of Lights is in Kanata, this little place was very cumbersome. I didn't see much of the place as I was too busy catching Pokémon on Pokémon Go App. To which a lot can be caught here if you have lures and insence. However, what I did see was great and I can tell alot of hours and work was put in to it. However, Magic of Lights will always be prime lights show I'm always drawn to.

  • Nadine M

I took my son on the 4 pm Farm Animal Tour and it was SO much fun! Farmer Valerie shared lots of funny anecdotes about each animal as she cares for them ever day. She also invited the kids to feed and interact with them. Seeing these rare breeds and learning about their history, use in olden times, and recent adventures was so enjoyable. They really are beautiful creatures.

Always love going to Cumberland Museum - the Christmas lights are particularly special and the kids have the most wonderful experiences with the wagon ride and hot apple cider around the bonfire. Slightly dampened this year by an "out-of-sorts" lady behind the desk who was a bit rude to us about the fact that the telegram to Santa had closed, but no big deal. Summer is a blast as well and the pioneer buildings are wonderful to wander around.

  • Sarah E. Watson

The museum was much bigger than I was expecting. It's made up of old buildings and houses which have been relocated to their site. You can explore each building and learn about the early history of the area. There are washrooms on site as well as a snack bar and a water cooler where you could refill a water bottle. There is a small assortment of live stock as well. The staff we met were very informative, friendly and very welcoming.

  • Kavitha Menon

Good for one time visit . Can't compare it with Glow lights Ottawa . You have to book online and it is not at all user friendly. Don't go there without booking tickets as you can't enter by taking on arrival pass. Front office network is mostly down so the staff will just say sorry even if you drive down from the US or other countries to watch Xmas lights. If you are going with children they will enjoy not that exciting for adults.

  • Dan Fraser

Wonderful heritage village set in the late 1800 to early 1900s (early diesel period). We attended the Christmas themed celebrations and they were outstanding. Lots of activities for children (and adults) like - decorating gingerbread men, printing gift tags and wrapping paper making a tree ornament and seeing Santa. Even more to see in summertime. Check out Upper Canada Village for a similar experience from the early 1800s.

  • Eric Sulser

What a place to visit. The museum is absolutely gorgeous. You can see old houses school garage stables and lots of animals. Don’t forget to go and see at the far back the small train that kids can ride. Also good to know. There is a walking trail in the back of The museum , Dogs are welcome, it is an off leash trail. Lots of mosquitoes. Open all year round. Great for snowshoeing and hiking in the winter fall and spring.

  • Kyle Barr

This place was so much fun for the kids. Its a whole little village straight out of the 1800s. For Chistmas they decorate it with over 30,000 lights! For less than $20 you can take your whole family and make gingerbread cookies and crafts and get pictures with santa and take a ride on a 2 horse drawn covered wagon. You can also write a telegram to santa and get hot choxolate. Great time overall. I want to go again.

  • Em Franz

Very quaint. Looks like a fun place to go with your family and bring you to Cumberland which has a stunning view of the fall leaves. Definitely family oriented. Ample parking, although it is on grass so if it rains bring a towel to wipe off feet after. It might get muddy. I was there volunteering as a massage student during the Fall colours Marathon so I didn't get to see all that facilitates in function.

  • Mike & Jen deGreef

We attended the museum for our first time ever during their Easter event and loved it. Such a well run event, staff are so passionate and caring. Answered all of our kids questions. Very interactive. A great family activity. Will definitely be back during the regular season to explore all it has to offer.

Fantastic village set at the turn of the century with all sorts of buildings. It was very cool to see a catalogue "kit home" and I look forward to going back when the buildings can be toured. It's well worth it to visit even with only looking in at the building doorways. Also the print shop person was fantastic and so very enthusiastic

  • T vdM

We went for the Christmas Lights special and it was great. All shops were running and the staff were knowledgeable and insightful. When there was an obscure question they emailed the historian who replied while we were still in the museum.

This place rocks. We like it so much we took out a membership. I highly recommend the power weekend, Canada day and Christmas. It's very low-key yet interesting entertainment for the whole family. Top Tip: If you can go on a Sunday when the railroad guys are there, they offer rides which kids (and big kids!) love!

  • Sean Healey

Such a beautiful place just outside of Ottawa. I highly recommend visiting during the holidays. The Christmas village of Lights is beautiful, but make sure to dress warmly. This museum has become increasingly popular with the growth of social media, but it's still a great spot to escape the crowds of downtown.

  • Todd Davis

We visited on a special day so there were demonstrations that may not normally occur. There are a variety of structures relocated to the musem grounds that shows how life was in historic Cumberland. We spent 5 hours there enjoying the exhibits, old farm equipment, plants, animals, and demonstrations.

This is a great place to visit when you're in town with young kids. The history is great and it has a very nice atmosphere. The staff are excellent and there are a lot of fun activities. Unfortunately due to covid you couldn't go inside any of the buildings. I hope next year they'll allow it.

  • Lloyd Low

Attended their Easter event. An affordable family activity. One must have some appreciation of historical lifestyles to enjoy the place. Water cooler available on-site. There is a small canteen serving light refreshments. The volunteers working there are a nice bunch and a joy to talk to.

  • J-L U

Wonderful heritage village and friendly staff. In particular the gentleman who runs the timber mill. We greatly appreciated him taking time to explain the equipment in ways that both newbies (like me) would understand and experienced mechanics (like my dad) would find interesting.

Drove here and the lights are not what I expected...Needs a lot of more variety and lacking colors and themes, I found street houses on the street better decorated with lots of colors and joyful Christmas ⛄ Themes that are a treat to one's eyes and best of all...free... …

We drove all the way from Stittsville to see the village of lights. It is not worth it. It lasted only 10 minutes, after spending 25 bucks on the ticket and more money on gas. My kid was bored as soon as we entered the park. Magic of lights is much better. Worth the money.

  • Matt Hansen

Awesome place for the family. So many activities for the kids, they often get worn out before they can make it through them all. Their best events are Halloween, Christmas and Easter. Their volunteers are amazing and really make this a special place for kids and families.

  • Vanessa Dmitruk

My 3-year-old loves it here! He is free to run all over the place, around the buildings and across the field, without having to worry about cars. He most enjoys circling the property to visit all the animals: ducks, chickens, geese, rabbits, turkeys, cows, and pigs.

  • Kaitlyn Groulx

I've been here on two occasions. Once I went to a field trip with my son, in kindergarten. It was lovely. Santa came for a visit and everything. The second time was a wedding. It was like a whole new place. They adapt very well to different events. Lovely place.

  • Cheryl Butler

My children love coming here. You're always hosting events and festivities so that the experience is always new. It's very refreshing to see that my kids become so engaged in the historical buildings. It's always a great day when we get to come for a visit.

  • Patrick Sinnott

It was a surprising and rather wonderful place. An eclectic collection of old but restored buildings arranged around a village green, including a railway station, church, farm including some animals, sawmill, school, houses etc. Fascinating and nostalgic.

  • Trevor Burton

A great place to visit with kids to see what life was like in the early 1900s. There were several interesting live demonstrations (blacksmith, and sawmill). They had a scavenger hunt that was fun to complete with our daughter. Kids 5 and under are free.

  • Sarah Boutilier

Great place to visit. There doesn't seem to be a lot of 1920's heritage villages. Some buildings were closed because they were setting up for a haunted Halloween wall. Would go here again. Looking forward to seeing it in Winter.

  • Linda Oliveras

At great place to bring children at Christmas time. The Village is all lit up, there are horse wagon rides, Christmas crafts for the kids and they can even decorate a gingerbread man. Oh and they can visit Santa Claus as well.
