Review 2021 ( edited 2023 ) Firstly a hospital is a big operation with a lot of bureaucracy and many people. Nursing must be a hard job at the best of times and we need to remember that our loved one or friend in care is simply a number to the staff. After witnessing 7+ months of nursing at Royal North Shore hospital intensive care and the burns unit following my brother car accident my opinion of nursing was very high. The staff at RNS appeared switched on and extremely professional. Sutherland hospital is another thing all together and an eye opener as i witness the treatment of my father & other patients. 1. One Staff member was in front of the patient wondering why his oxygen levels are low but didn’t realise his mask was on - it was a few test later until the nurse figured it out. 2. Patient Changed ward and nursing staff didn’t know and left his possessions In the old room 3. It would appear he has not been to the toilet for days ( number 2 ) and nothing has been done about it until family says something. 4. He is a diabetic and his sugar has been through the roof over 3 times higher than it should be for many days and it would seem no action is taken. 5. At 76 and possibly with early stage dementia he isn’t eating much at all unless Nagged by family. Not the hospitals fault but the communication Is none. What if no family is present most of the day... let them fade away to nothing? 6. The rooms Initially he was upstairs in a private room not depressing and looked fresh. Downstairs its depressing, tired and looks 3rd world ( my hospital room in China is as better) , the lights in the room are directly above the bed so it’s hard to sleep during the day. The rooms are so small the next bed it only about 2-3 feet away. Person next to my father should be in a private room because he keep yelling to himself ( no one else there ) making it hard to sleep. 7. 15 minutes for a bedpan. - Pressed the button, - Walked down the corridors, - stood at reception It was like a ghost town. I am sure the staff are doing the best of their abilities however it would seem that some of their best is not good enough. Properly the biggest thing is that the communication is next to none. There needs to be one point of contact that can be a go between the patients family and the DRs. After seeing this I hope I never EVER have to go to this hospital. Anyone that can afford it go private

My wife was in hospital for nearly three weeks. I will start by saying that in her case, the staff in Emergency were excellent. In her ward however, pain control and records keeping were abysmal. It could take up to 2 hours for a nurse to bring pain medication after requesting it and often they forgot. Records of when pain relief was administered, usually could not be found by the attending nurse. Communication between doctors and nurses and follow-through with patients was inefficient and chaotic. Medical staff visit the ward once daily with a cumbersome trolley and laptop for data entry. The system is so complex that vital info is either not entered, entered incorrectly or not updated. It used to be standard practice that there was a notes board on the end of the patient's bed. Eventually my wife was put on a self-administering morphine machine. Three days after the date the doctor told my wife she needed to come off the machine, the port in her arm fell out in the bathroom. I called the nurse and because the computer records were out of date the nurse wanted to put the morphine back in and I insisted that she needed to consult a doctor. During my wife's stay I heard about near misses with two other patients that could have led to death however I will not elaborate on them . I think you get the general message about the problems at Sutherland Hospital.

Got to the emergency department at 9:45pm last night (5/10/22) ripped a massive hole in my shin down to the bone not pretty needed cleaning stitches and a proper dressing, 6 hours go by and i’m still sitting in the emergency having no one come to see me or speak to me, bleeding on their floors i was feeling dizzy and anxious wondering what was going on i fell asleep which i guess could be dangerous while losing blood but they didn’t seem to worry about it. i wake up still no one had come out to speak to me. I would’ve been completely understanding if someone had’ve come out and said that they’re having a rough night but no they didn’t give me the time of day didn’t even look at me while i walked out the doors at 3:27am still bleeding hopping into my car and going home to sleep with an open flesh wound risking severe infection but hey not they’re problem right cause oh yeah they’re under the pump with hypochondriacs that go to hospital because of a cough and somehow that’s more important than someone who requires stitches cause as some of you may know an open wound that needs stitches only has 4-5 hours of opportunity for that to be done before it’s too late and your risk of infection becomes a lot higher, cheers sutherland hospital glad my tax pays your wages.

Every single visit I’ve ever had to Sutherland Hospital, apart from my birth and yesterday has been extremely unpleasant or marred by an unpleasant behaviour by a staff member from a nurse from Russia (last Christmas) yelling at an elderly man about a personal situation so that the entire ward could hear (inappropriately and embarrassingly) to a doctor telling the patient next to me she had cancer as a by the way mention before moving on. Last night I was admitted and I couldn’t fault it, from the amazing Doctor Helen’s personable, respectful and affable bedside manner that sincerely heard all of her patients needs to the most beautiful and sincere nurse Kelly who was so kind, especially in great moments of excruciating pain. Thank you for giving me a lovely experience at my local hospital. Sutherland Hospital - I don’t know how to reach whomever might help you but you need more people like these two and a serious overhaul of your organisational behaviour - seek out assistance in this area (organisational behaviour psychologists) to help you solve your institutionalised and systemic problems that have been chaotically chosen. Change your world.

My mother has been in Sutherland Hospital since November 13th. Originally for a fall but since being in there developed COVID_19 and other conditions and was transferred to ICU. While I have no complaints about the Drs cares and some of the nurses, I do however find the lack of communication and holistic care of my mother extremely lacking. There is no communication between wards, nurses are lacking empathy with my mother and her elderly husband who has been denied visitation when has gone up to see her. The PPE with COVID_19 is poor and not being done correctly. I personally saw a door of a covid19 positive ward being proped open with a bin and nurses coming out of the ward into the clean area, before my mother developed COVID_19. My sister was made to doff her protective clothing in the covid19 positive room and then had to touch the door handle to go out. We are at our wits end with how we are being treated by this Hospital.

My mum had a random allergic reaction that clogged up her airways and was stopping her from breathing. We rushed her to emergency and they wouldn't let her in without a mask. After challenging them, they let her in and then all the nurses and doctors were arguing with her and intimidating her to wear a mask when she could barely even talk or breathe from clogged air ways. They increased her anxiety which made her breathing worse. She ended up leaving straight away because of the pressure and harsh treatment she had from everyone in there. They endangered my mums life today and we WILL be taking this further. They lacked common sense, which is appaling for so called "health professionals". Not to mention they wouldn't let no one in the room with her to assist. This hospital WILL be held accountable, so they don't endanger anyone else's life. This hospital has a lack of humanity and common sense.

Went through emergency on Monday night around 8pm as i'm pregnant and was bleeding. Husband couldnt come with me due to covid. Was only 3 other people in the room. 40 minutes later a nurse came around to take blood and told me it would be 30-60 minutes. Long story short i didnt get seen till 12.30am (nearly four hour wait) during the wait i wasnt offered a bed (there was plenty of empty ones, no nurse came to check on me, vital signs werent checked) was left in a chair waiting 3 hours after bloods taken only to be told they cant do anything. Asked if they could offer a bed side ultrasound sound which they said no. Asked if i could come back first thing in the morning to get one done, DR said no thats only for emergencies. Ask if having a misscary and bleeding wasn't an emergency which the dr said no it wasn't. Biggest waste of time and total lack of care and compassion

All the staff from the cleaners to the hospital admission are lovely people and go out of there way to help all patients. The nurses and doctors do a fantastic job and care about patients from casualty right up to major surgery. I recently underwent chemo therapy at Sutherland Hospital and am glad I was not shipped of to St George Hospital. The Oncology team are, as with all other parts of the Hospital, world class. I only had medicare coverage but was treated just as well as any member in an expensive private health fund. I don't know why people complain about waiting in casualty for a few hours. It's to be expected during peak times there will be delays. Should someone dying be overlooked for a sprained ankle? No. Some people need to take responsibility for their own actions. The staff do the very best job they can 24/7 365 days a week.

5 stars doesn’t do justice the quality of care I have received during my recent pregnancy and birth. Every single appointment and dealing I’ve had with the hospital over the last 9 months has been great. Initial appointments, midwife and MAPS appointments, iron transfusions at RADIUS, unscheduled observations in the birth unit, the birth itself and then aftercare/stay at the maternity unit have all been such positive experiences. I wish I could individually thank everyone who I’ve come into contact with and honestly I can’t recommend this hospital enough for pregnancy and birth. Particular thanks to midwife Rosie who is a real asset to the hospital, as well as all of the midwives who took such great care of us during our stay. I’m sorry I can’t remember all of your names but know that you are all incredible women!

My compliments to the staff at Jara a department within the hospital, I found all the nursing staff to be be both friendly and supportive of my recovery and showed empathy at a time of need, so obviously the result of good management/people and the acting NUM at the time Nicole. Encouraged by the Social welfare department who worked closely with me and liaised with other services to assist in my recovery looking forward, there assistance exceeding my expections.I would also like this opportunity to say how grateful I am to Dr Mikhil who was a critical member of my recovery and demonstrated both professionalism and compassion and who took into consideration my personal situation and the overall nature of my needs not just medically but socially which will result in a much better outcome overall.

I’m really upset by the way I was just spoken to on the phone by the switchboard. I’ve been trying to get in contact with someone about the parent education courses since yesterday and the number I was given no one is returning my calls. So I decided to call the main hospital number to ask if they can put me through. Sadly the lady that I spoke to was very rude. She said that Parent Education doesn’t exist. Then said, they don’t work on the weekends so you’ll have to call back on Monday?? So do they or don’t they?? I explained that I’m calling as I’m supposed to be attending a course today but my husband has tested positive for COVID so we can’t come. No empathy, then transferred me through to Emergency. Pretty disappointing communication skills Sutherland Hospital!

My elderly father was very poorly treated and care is appalling. Average age of staff in the Barkala ward is 20-25 this includes doctors and nurses. No one has experience. 89 yrs of age , he caught infections was delirious, unconscious, dehydrated, not fed properly for long periods of time, with low blood pressure and low temperature for over 24 hrs until they decide he was critical and treated him with a drip. I raised the alarm over 24 hrs before. I witnessed shocking situations with other patients where they were barely treated unless they saw relatives in the room. I fed and helped all other 3 patients in the room as staff did not care. ABSOLUTELY APPALLING CARE. Avoid this place if you can with your oldies.

  • Meri Murgoski

Took my 17 yr old son to casualty, it appeared to be quiet. Though we were seen by triage quickly, staff were not remotely interested or concerned about my sons level of pain, his anxiety and distressed state. He had severe abdominal pain and the drs didn’t even acknowledge, let alone do a formal clinical assessment. I am very mindful staff are overworked, short staffed and I appreciated they had had a chaotic night, but seriously!!! Sutherland hospital never ceases to disappoint!! Last year, an RN on the ward my son was in had no idea who my son was or why he was in hospital and he was her patient!! Senior management need to review their current practices

  • Christopher Madden

The standard of care I received for outpatient day surgery was second to none. From orderlies, to nurses, to Wassim Rahman's surgical team, everyone treated me with great care, dignity and respect. Nurse Shilpa in particular was highly professional, communicative, friendly and helpful. I can't praise her enough. Thank you Shilpa. They all communicated everything I needed to know at every stage. Very efficient systems in place - I was in and out like a flash. It was a fairly standard check-up procedure, but still there were no speed bumps or any confusions. They worked together as a well-oiled machine. Superb! Thank you Sutherland Hospital.

  • Melly D

BIG THANKS to all the teams within the Birthing, Maternity and Antenatal departments they were absolutely amazing. The support shown throughout our first pregnancy was EXCEPTIONAL. The communication was great with regular check ins and explanations of what was going to happen and when. We would highly recommend this hospital to anyone for their pregnancy. The staff went over and above to make us feel important and provided us with nothing but support. Our little girl Frankie was welcomed into this world surrounded by love and support from all the team. Thanks again to everyone for your professionalism. Mel, Tara and Frankie.

After 5yrs of numerous visits to the ED problem being band aided and sent home.. I've been admitted for a gastronomy camera been here 5 days and have been fed liquid diet, I've complained I'm starving illness has already compromised my weight I've lost over 35kg and weigh a meer 52kg at 169cm tall and to be put on a clear fluid diet and treated like I am nobody is just a joke, lack of communication between the staff drs trainees, it's pretty pathetic we aren't in a third world country where there's a food shortage it's not right to starve someone for 6 days and keep putting off the treatment...How's this right???

I have been a patient at The Sutherland Hospital on 3 occasions this year between February and June. The care, empathy, and medical services provided to me by all staff from the Paramedics, The Emergency Department and Cardiac ward was nothing short of first class. As a veteran suffering from war related conditions I have found myself at the hospital on many occasions over the past 49 years. On every occasion I have received the best possible care from all who treated me, and for that i sincerely thank you all. The residents of the Shire are blessed to have such a First Class facility available for us.

On behalf of my wife who had her appendix removed on the 18th of October 2021 at Sutherland Hospital.. We would like to express our sincere thanks to Dr. Francis Chu and the team of doctors and nurses. My wife said the service thru Emergancy and following diagnostic procedures was so friendly and helpful. From the wards, operating room and through to recovery she had the most beautiful people surrounding her making her feel comfortable. Once again thanks to all the staff at Sutherland hospital for looking after my wife and for all your care and support. Best regards Sri and Alan McCarthy.

Some people complain and give low ratings simply because of the long wait time in the emergency department; this unfortunately is an universal phenomenon across most hospitals in highly populated area. I did wait 8 hours to see my doctor in the emergency department, but the doctors were trying their hardest to see every patient; it takes time and we have to understand this. During my stay in the hospital, all the doctors and nurses were extremely helpful, approachable and attentive, they tried to make patients as comfortable as they could be. A great hospital.

  • Sarah

The Government must invest more funding for hospitals - Staff, Beds and a pay rise!! 8 hour wait to have my daughters earring taken out as it got infected and sunk into the skin 24/08/22 As much as my daughter does not like the nurse and doctor who treated her, because of the traumatic ordeal she went through. I am so grateful to them for helping my daughter. My daughter WILL grow up to know that they although it was traumatic for her - the nurse and doctor did the absolute best job and without them it could have been so so much worse. Thank you

  • Jyoti P (Blue-Angel)

I had a day surgery procedure here. Dr Robert Nguyen was wonderful. He was always speaking to me with dignity and respect and most of all he did a great job. The nurses Ashley and I don’t remember the other ones name was so lovely, kind and nurturing. Ashley was so worried about my low blood pressure. I owe my life to Ashley. If I could I would put a sign up in front of my house so you can get free parking. Thank you for looking after me. You are an Angel in disguise, along with some of your colleagues. God bless your beautiful little hearts

  • kolonelk

Absolutely useless for anything A&E related, just go anywhere else. My partner fell and hurt her ankle, was discharged with no strapping, boot or pain meds, and when I went to collect her was told they didn't know where she was and "must have wandered off", despite having to be brought in via a wheelchair. The triage staff were lovely, but the doctor was totally useless, and this has been a repeat pattern at the hospital - there is a total disregard for the patient, the only goal is getting people out as fasr as possible.

Pregnancy/Birth My wife, newborn and me can highly recommend the Sutherland Hospital. We moved to Australia in the last Trimester and although the health system in Australia was new to us, the staff incl. every single department took their time to explain everything to us. My wife needed an emergency c section and everyone involved worked very professional, took their time to explain what is going on etc. We felt in good hands and everyone was very caring, also after birth in the maternity unit. 5 Stars, well deserved.

  • Karmanu

I never been let down by the professionalism, of the nurses doctors cleanliness hospitality and caring at this hospital. I give them 9 out of ten. Because nothing is perfect. I have very recently had major surgery... A huge thank you to all the staff.. from the operating theatre to all the fantastic nurses in 3 Jarra Ward. These Nurses were overloaded with work..short staffed...however they were always there for us. Absolutely run off their feet..sadly Government does not understand that. Carmel

  • elaine khoury

Daughter with severe disabilities been in for 12 weeks . No personal care left in bed chair for 7 hours wet . Under staffed I had to attend to her feeding otherwise she was left hungry with no fluids. One staff member was compassionate. No hair wash for 5 weeks.Nurses walked around all day with the computer Government needs to put more money into the health care and more hospital trained nurses not university trained. They have no idea how to look after patients needs.

  • bilge dağlı

First of all, thank you so much Dr. Ellen for looking after me tonight. You’re the best doctor I’ve ever met. I would like to say with all my heart, you’re very friendly, caring, kind and genuine. How passionately you’re doing your job and you did great job. Many many thanks... Also thank you all reception who were very helpful and patient. You made me feel comfortable :) I left the hospital with my happiness. They are all amazing and appreciated a lot.

  • Sharon E

The majority of the nursing staff in the aged care Killara Acute ward looking after my extremely high needs & challenging Dad were surprisingly good, not perfect, but above expectations. This is likely due to the quality of the Geriatricians and overall SO much better staff than Bankstown Hospital - Addition - I’m downgrading this review by feeling let down by some Southcare geriatricians - I guess compassion fatigue has set in -

  • Legend

Very good service and the nurses were very helpful to my mother who had a knee replacement and I want to give a special thank you to Demi Zissis in the jarra ward for helping shower her on her last day there we very much appreciate it. I work with her father John Zissis, your daughter is an amazing nurse mate. Since she did such an amazing job I’ll try not to take any batteries out of the remotes loll Jim qantas

Waited for at least 4 hours without being seen for mental health. They only called me after I left expecting me to go back knowing I had work the next morning and it was extremely late and I no longer wanted to receive help because when I was ready no one wanted to help or take me seriously and I didn't feel like I would be able to speak with them after knowing that they didn't really care about my well-being.

  • Coralie Richards

I recently had my second baby at The Sutherland Hospital, my first experience being elsewhere in Sydney. The medical staff, nurses and midwives were absolutely incredible and the support provided went above and beyond what I expected. I would 100% recommend this hospital to deliver your baby, I had a very positive birth experience and was extremely well cared for. The staff are amazing.

  • George Vieru

We have had our first baby at the Sutherland Hospital. It was a very pleasant experience. The doctors and midwives are experienced and friendly, they were so calm and kept my wife focused during the labor period. A Huge THANKS to midwives, they took so good care of my wife and baby for days we have been in hospital, and even after they visited us at home and gave the support we need.

  • Patricia

Recently visited a friend in Sutho hospital, the nurses and doctors were great and couldn't do enough for their patients, however to my disappointment she was in the same room as 2 men and 1 other women, all sharing 1 toilet and bathroom. In the workplace a business is required to provide separate facilities for men and women so how is this allowed to happen in a public hospital?

  • Mel Riini

My daughter just had her 1st baby a few days ago and whilst the section for the birthing clinic the staff were lovely and helpful, the maternity ward was very disappointing for a 1st time mum. They were dismissive unhelpful and basically no empathy. They didn't show her how to feed properly. I wouldn't recommend this hospital. Not a good 1st experience for her which is a shame!

  • Angela Fuller

An emergency to Sutherland Hospital this week from my mums home. Her name is Angela. My name is Julie and I would like to say how wonderful everyone was in helping me. From the ambulance paramedics, they were amazing. The hospital staff, reception, nurses, doctors everyone involved could not have been more caring. I would like to thank you all. Kind regards Julie and Angela.

I had my very sick sister in Emergency with Cancer & a terrible infection this week. Wow Georgie the Doctor & the beautiful nursing staff were absolutely amazing!!! All the oncology staff this week Amy ,Joseph, Dr Roger & Dr Michael & all staff have been so kind and attentive. Hope I didn't leave too many out. She is Feeling so much better which makes me so happy!!!

  • John Hutchin

Both ambulance and hospital staff very capable and caring. Food was hot with good variety available even the cleaners were friendly. Doctors visited every day and physiotherapy was made available to ensure improvement was maintained. One of the lovely Asian nurses even made us early morning coffee. So nice of her. I will be back but hopefully in the far future.

  • A S

The Operating Theatres team are absolutely wonderful! I did my nursing placement at this ward and they all treated us like we were part of the team. Their attention to detail and professionalism is a reflection of how much they truely care for their patients. Denis is an amazing educator, i can guarantee that you will be well looked after by this staff!

  • Christine Wilson

I was operated on Monday 19th at Sutherland Hospital. Cannot thank the staff there enough, for the wonderful care I received. Everyone was amazing, not just to me, but all the patients I met. Thank you so much. You truly are the most amazing people. You deserve all the accolades that come your way. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

  • Ashley Williams

three stars review. I understand you guys in the medical industry are shortstaffed Post Covid, but I was there for 13 hours yesterday and even the extraordinary I was in I just want to give a thank you to the nurse Emma in the fast track area. He looked after me for all day yesterday. With my situation I was in. Thank you again.

  • Kelly McNamara

Excellent nurses and service in Jara ward. Alot of student nurses you couldn't tell. They must have been mentored well. What a blended in team. I've been an assistant nurse in a nursing home. Totally different experience than these new nurses coming through which hospitals need. Excellent team work. Great, caring ward.

Aside from the loooooong wait in ED (nearly 5 hours with heart condition) to see a doctor, I must say thank you to all nurses and doctors who were looking after me till I got discharged from the hospital. They all were very professional, caring and did an amazing job. For sure the hospital needs more doctors.

  • Peter Locker

I would like to thank all the staff, that I had dealt with at the Emergency Department, Yarrabee, and the Cardiology Department at Sutherland Hospital. The level of care was exceptional from all staff, not only for me, but also the interractions I observed with staff and other patients. Thank you. …

  • Rosemary Shelley

Thank you to all the staff at the hospital. I spent 5 days last week there due to a bad infection . They were great as I have white coat syndrome. The nurses in ICU were brilliant. Only negative is the food but when you are pumped full of antibiotics etc guess the appetite is not the best .Thank you

Waiting 4 hours now just for my son to see a DR Possible broken jaw. My son is 11. Not good enough! Staff don't care. There isn't even enough seats for all. Its cold and no one can give any information. Been told by reception that we're next. Over a hour ago. And plenty of people have walked past.

  • H H

All I can say is the staff in Gunyah ward are most compassionate and caring team of nurses especially nurse B that was looking after my relative she was exceptionally amazingly caring and compassionate she did everything in order make the patient as comfortable as possible. Thank you very much.

  • Anna Dudarenok

Had to get my son to emergency to be checked out because of cough and wheezing: regular GP wouldn't take anyone with Covid symptoms. We were admitted with no issues, got very lucky for timing so not many people were in and the whole thing took about an hour. Very attentive nurses and doctor.

  • Md Sadman Alvi

recently got admitted due to diverticulitis pain, in Cooinda nurses were so caring and overall experience was high standard, i think emergency department of this hospital works bit slow, had to wait long period of time to see doc. mentioning a nurse name J Shepherd you have been awesome.

Had my first baby here at Sutherland Hospital. The entire experience was fantastic. I had heard mixed reviews but I honestly could not fault them. All the midwives were amazing, so caring, so personable and so attentive. I’m looking forward to having my next baby there.

I am so greatfull for the help I got. I called early morning, spoke to a very patient nurse who listened and explained what I need to do. Then a Dr called and helped so much. I was in a panic because I thought the worse. I’m good now thank thank you Sutherland hospital

  • Amelie Harper

Gave birth to my beautiful girl at the hospital. Everyone working in the Antenatal to the Endocrinology to the Birthing Suite and Maternity Ward was wonderful. I can't thank them enough for their amazing care. Highly recommend Sutherland Hospital to anyone.

  • S H

I was a bit hesitant to get admitted there. Anyway not a bad hospital but kind of holding back. Some of the employees were extremely rude, God knows why. Issue I faced pain management, diet management, shortage of drinking water and cleanliness.

  • Ryan Rozairo

Worst hospital I’ve ever been too. 8 hours spent there, very dehydrated from the condition I was in and they refused to give me any fluids from the drip telling me “they don’t give overnight patients the bags of fluids”. What an absolute joke.

The most friendliest and efficient hospital staff I have ever come across. The hospital was also super clean and well organised. Thank you to all the staff at Sutherland Hospital for looking after me so well and for all your care and support.

Loved the service here. Visited the ED today, service from the nurses was really good, though there were long wait and a few sick kids around. Can't fault their effort in trying to be accommodating and attend to everyone's need.

Run by morons and it doesn’t matter if you tell the triage nurse that you are in a heap of pain they’ll still just make you sit out in the waiting room for 7 hours with out even giving you Panadol

My daughter had her cast remover at the children’s ward at Sutherland hospital 16/11/2021. She had a great time and plenty of toys. All the nurses and surgeons were very professional and friendly.

The nurses were fantastic. The doctors don't want to treat old people but want to take people's properties

Always such a pleasure, just be patient and rest assured you're in good hands.
