The lookout point is still here, although not marked. The concrete floored shelter that allowed easy shaded access for disabled, wheelchairs etc, has been removed for some reason.....but the fantastic views are of course still their. Great spot for a picnic, walk or to enjoy the views of the RJ Hamer Arboretum. There's a gravel carpark that in very dry weather, will have your car covered in dust. Lots of tracks in the area for walks or very popular for Mountain Biking. To the Western end of the carpark there are some shelters with seating and BBQs and plenty of shade. A really great spot to spend a short while enjoying the spectacular views on a sunny day with Silvan Reservoir, the Arboretum, Tesselars Tulips and many other local tourist spots a short drive away. Or spend the whole day with picnics, BBQs, walks, cycling etc.

Slightly more than an hour from Melbourne CBD, the Dandenong Ranges is a whole life experience away from city life: driving along the winding roads passing quaint hilltop towns dotted with artist studios, craft stores & renowned gardens. To get to Olinda, drive along Olinda-Monbulk Road for approx 900metres then turn left onto Chalet Road: arriving at the Lookout carpark. There on the viewing platform you have an expansive wonderful scenic spot offering incredible breathtaking stunning superb views of the ranges to the east & north & over the forestry plantation. One can almost feel like the whole world is in your hands. Taking a very picturesque short steep hill walk through the Olinda Forest area (within the R.J. Hamer Forest Arboretum which has some variety of introduced trees species): the pines & some beautiful native bush & many excellent relaxing (including waterfalls) walking tracks nearby.

It is a one of the most beautiful lookouts in Melbourne. It also has a walking trail which runs through deeper with the slope in the wild. It is a good place to sit relax and maybe play a bit and have fun with family. I went here with a friend of mine because we had just visited the tulip festival which happens about 5-10 mins drive away from here in Silvan. We were looking for more lookout spots which we can see around our location and we stumbled upon this beautiful location. I would highly recommend a visit, during a sunny day when skies are clear and blue. You can go with family and have a picnic.

It was a great walk, tranquil, pleasant and refreshing. Quite a few people on an easter Monday. Lots of space and long over viewable tracks, so if you get separated for 50 or more meters others can still see you, while one can have a private conversation without being disturbed and worried to get unexpectedly separated with the kids who are playing along and being silly behind you. Lol! Unfortunately, there were no sunny spells to enjoy the radiating and captivating foliage of a beautiful autumn day. Looks like we have to come again!!!! It will be worthwhile. No doubts!

Lovely lookout just around the corner from Cloudehill Garden & Nursery in Olinda. Pretty views across the Yarra Valley on a clear day. Some bench seating or the large rocks can be used to sit on. The grassed area has both sloped & flat sections to picnic on. Dogs allowed. There are walking tracks also. The only problem l found was that Chalet Rd is a tight gravel road leading up to it from Olinda-Monbulk Rd. There are some points where 2 large cars will barely fit side by side.

Can drive straight up and sit in the car if you like which is good on colder days. Can see a long way, although view a little spoilt by the tall man planted trees. Doesn't feel as natural as other lookout spots. Great place to go for a walk though. The trees give great shade in summer, and there are more natural areas further in. Lots of mown grass for a picnic. Nice quiet spot. Dirt road access and car park. A small number of benches to sit on and one covered bench area.

  • Andrew Fox

Great view except that the tall trees they've planted block the lookout, have to walk down behind the treeline and that's where you will find everyone picnicking and enjoying the unobstructed view. Lots of young trees seem to have been recently planted which will further ruin the view when they have time to grow.

Beautifil views and a great place for a picnic. There is a walking track that leads into the forest if you're up for working off that picnic. It does come full circle so you can get back to your car but there are plenty of tracks leading off if you want to be more adventurous. Even better in the rain …

  • Bill M

Stunning views - have been here dozens of times (or more) over the years. The ever-changing tree colours are incredible, especially in spring and autumn. Have occasionally seen wombats wandering around here too. Special place.

  • Erin Bartleton

So beautiful. We went for a walk around the place, then stopped and had a picnic looking at the beautiful view. It was a gorgeous day and I could see so far. It's a lovely spot, even if the road down there is a little steep!

  • Elliot Addley-Cook

A wonderful lookout over the forestry plantation. If you want to see it properly though, you have to walk past the first line of pines. It's a short walk (though the hill is steep) and the view more than makes up for it.

  • Leonard Travers

Great views and good track although although steeper than 'light to medium' as indicated. Watch out for a kookaburra that steals food from your hands.

What an amazing place to take a quiet walk. The international plantings were fascinating. A different view from any angle. The tracks are not always well signposted, but that added to the adventure.

  • Shaye Cavanagh

Worth the drive from Frankston. One of the most beautiful places I have ever seen. This is the type of place you would propose to someone or get your wedding photos taken. 10/10 would go again.
