The modern art on display at this museum was absolutely some of the greatest things I’ve ever seen. I have never before appreciated art in such a way. There were moments where I was brought to tears, moments where I laughed, and moments where I just stood there trying to understand. Some of which I could not, but it was still a beautiful experience. However if I could convince the group I was with about how modern art is not just strange, then it would’ve been perfect. Yes some people who would see a replication of a car from a fatal accident, or body parts set up in a crate, or CDs stuck to a wall with honey dripping down would be considered strange. But the art behind the pieces is everything. I only wish I had more time to understand every single piece. Also if you are in the military you get in for free!!! A member of our group got all 4 of us in for free. Also the gift shop has some really cool books and overpriced souvenirs, but what is a great gift shop with out that? Will definitely come again, but most likely by myself so I can appreciate the art in a different way. But YES make sure you visit if you’re in the area!!!!

I had the week off so my 11yr old son & I came for the mini golf. It cost $6 to park and around $10 per person to play. It's a great rooftop location, but for the price to play it once, it left a bit to be desired from an adult perspective. Everything was in great condition and the design was creative, but the 10 holes are small in scale and feel like they belong to a portable fair. I'm sure they take them inside for winter. For the price and how quickly it was over, there wasn't much of a wow factor. The whole building had no wow factor. Many of the walls and floors were bare. There were no visible art displays, glass windows, or signs directing us to where the art is to make us want to enter or pay to see it. There are no sculptures in the halls to let you know it's an artsy place. We had more fun in the sculpture garden seeing the cherry on the spoon for free. It's not a bad place to relax and chill, but I wanted to leave inspired, and I just couldn't find my passion here.

I attended on Free First Saturday and it was a great experience. It was busy, but everyone was respectful of one another and shared the space well. The physical space was well-maintained. My only complaints relate to customer service. When my partner asked for a place to sit and a drinking fountain, two separate staff members told us to go to Cardamom, where we had to make a purchase to sit and drink water. Turns out that there are two (free) drinking fountains in addition to all of the (free) benches around the museum. Also, my partner and I were toting heavy winter coats and we didn’t realize there was a coat room until we were leaving. Not a single staff member mentioned the coat room.

The Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, MN, is a true gem for art enthusiasts. Its contemporary and diverse collection showcases thought-provoking and innovative works across various mediums. The museum’s striking architecture, including the iconic Spoonbridge and Cherry sculpture in the adjacent Minneapolis Sculpture Garden, adds to the overall experience. With ever-changing exhibitions, the Walker continually offers fresh perspectives and engages visitors with the cutting-edge art scene. Whether you’re a seasoned art aficionado or a curious newcomer, the Walker Art Center is a must-visit destination that ignites creativity and fosters a deeper appreciation for modern artistic expression. My experience at this contemporary art centre was underwhelming. I visited last week and I wasn't told the gallery 1-4 were closed until after I purchased my ticket. I like contemporary arts and I enjoy coming up with my own interpretations when looking at a piece. Some of the installations were pretty intriguing to look at, but some of them were just plain meaningless/hollow. The David Hockney exhibition was cool and all of his works at this exhibition came from the Walker's holdings. Not bad for $15, but the free sculpture garden outside was much more enjoyable.

The outdoor sculpture field was full of great modern art that was very interactive. I also enjoyed the flowers in bloom and the shade of the arbors. Inside, the Walker boasts many exhibits and also offers mini-golf and there is a cafe. The museum was cool, clean, and comfortable. No food or drinks allowed inside and you must check your bags into a locker. At the cafe, we ordered the hummus which was both beautifully presented and delicious. Pita bread was good too. The fried chicken pita entree was a flavor experience. It is worth trying. Delicious and different.

I wish the Walker had more art and artists to look and ponder at. Unfortunately every time I go, I'm disappointed by the lack of inspiration and displays. The staff are incredibly friendly, but there were more staff than visitors at this museum. The bathroom I visited was not the cleanest and the sitting areas seemed dusty. The only thing my husband and I enjoyed was their cafe. It was very cozy with lots of natural light streaming through the floor to ceiling windows. The food smelled good, which we didn't have, but the beverages we had were great.

  • Suzanne Durkacs

We visited the Walker to view their David Hockney exhibit and it was amazing! Hockney works in multiple mediums including lithograph prints, painting, fax machines in the 1980s and iPads most recently. We don’t go here to see video installations, and there is a lot of them about! I find them to be self-indulgent, boring, preachy, and unappealing. The sculpture garden is worth-while, art-wise! Dying this cold spring, it’s actually a plus that the trees haven’t bloomed yet, cuz you can see the artwork unobstructed by foliage. :-)

  • Justin Wong

This is probably more reflective of my personal taste than anything else. I had more fun at the outdoor sculpture garden (free) then inside the museum. Although they have a strong collection with lots of big name modern artists. I really enjoyed the roof terrace and the mini-golf looked fun! The mini-golf was sold out but I still got to walk around and check out the artist pieces.

This art museum seems to have an “Emperor’s New clothes” effect—everyone pretends something is good/profound because they don’t want to be perceived as unintelligent. Everyone has a different taste when it comes to art, and usually art museums offer a little bit for everyone, but not this place. Aside from a couple colorful quilts, It’s one thing: abstract art completely devoid of personality or substance. Get ready for riveting art like cringe dancing and scribbles. Not at all worth $18 a person.

  • Gamelockbreaks

I've been to a few art centers between the United States and Europe. This place is too confusing and has a huge lack in material for what you are expected to pay. "Modern archeology" photos on the walls 10 feet apart from each other. Like $5 would be a more realistic price for the amount of work we saw. Gets 2 stars for cleanliness though.

I adore this place to death. It's completley free to everyone under 18, and otherwise I believe the cost isn't too much. They are concerned with showing art, not making money. The exhibits seem sprawling. We were here for three hours and didn't even get to everything. Everything just has a certain feeling of importance yet not, and I can't explain it over text. Go see this place for yourself, it's a beautiful building full of mini stories.

  • Elisha Schaibley

I am really not into modern art. So take my review in that regard. I found a pieces that made me think and spend some time looking at. Also if you're doing mini golf make a reservation. Especially on a nice day there can be quite a wait. The Thursday night after 5 free visit deal is really nice.

There is art here. Colours. Shapes. Words. Sounds. The employees/Volunteers are polite and helpful. The restaurant is weird. You can smell grease throughout the main hallway. Makes me want to not be there after an hour. I would have liked to see more installations instead of a steady stream of iPhone movie after iPhone movie. Props to the film makers but the gallery put too many on display.

  • Joshua Adelman

stellar curatorial team here. internationally renowned. minneapolis is truly lucky to have the walker as an option to view and immerse yourself in the arts. as members we try to visit at least a couple times a quarter. exhibits cycle out at a speed that gives you the opportunity to return and see things again, but not for too long where a return visit isn’t warranted.

The exhibit was a little underwhelming but still a beautiful facility with amazing artwork showcased. Also did the rooftop mini golf which was busy on a Saturday and had to wait for holes to clear up. I wouldn't recommend the golf for the price...

Went to World Wildlife Fund presentation. The setting was great, the presentation fantastic...the bathrooms s bit disconcerting, little white, totally enclosed cubical with minimal signage. Someone with claustrophobia might panic at not being able to get out after leaving their stall...all the doors look the same...

I only give it three stars because I am definitely not a modern art. Aficionado. However, I've been to many different modern art museums including those in Washington, DC and New York City. This is just as comparable in terms of architecture and presentation. Very nice facility. Everybody was top notch. The current exhibits were very well displayed and curated.

  • JD Rinde

We went during the Mehretu exhibition which features many of her large works. Much of her work looks like maps with markings some monochromatic. Several videos are displayed throughout the galleries. I liked the many levels of museum displaying permanent collections. There is a rooftop patio that offers views of the Minneapolis skyline.

  • Grace Mccollum

Strange parking garage lay out for nearest parking. The Walk of art, was interesting butnkot spectacular. They don't necessarily seem to flow well, very back and forth to see everything. It would be nice to have some shade or misters etc out, as clearly its pretty warm outside and some of the art pieces have you walking a bit

  • Christian Hahn (Midori)

Visited on a regular weekday and the main exhibits were closed??? I was there from 1:30pm-4:00pm. The only thing I could visit was the current photography wing, which was pretty lackluster. Hope to revisit & update/change this review soon.

Staff are bumbling. Not sure if it's thier fault or are not properly instructed. I asked what time the gully boys show was tonight. The only show. They called people, didn't know. I asked where the front main entrance was. They confidently guided me the wrong direction even though I tried to clarify multiple times More

A must see when visiting the Twin Cities. We were helping out-of-town guests explore Minnesota and this was a stop we couldn’t skip. We had the perfect summer afternoon to enjoy the outdoor park.

Fun and free! If you're a MN native or just passing through the sculpture garden is a must see. It's a great way to experience art and nature. It's close to downtown Minneapolis and uptown so you have tons of options for lunch or dinner while you're out. I'll probably pack a picnic next time.

The walker-museum is not your stereotypical art museum but that's what I loved about it. So many interesting pieces to check out, I especially loved the 9 TV's, that was my favourite. There are many floors still closed off so I'm looking forward to those! And teenagers below 18 are free :)
