My wife and I have shopped at Viet Hua regularly for the past 4 years. Until today, we have been happy with it. However, during our last visit on July 27, we accidentally bought a bag of rice bits vs. regular grain rice. We kept the receipt and put the bag in a secure place. Today, we took the bag into the store to request an exchange for the correct rice. The cashier pointed to the fine print on the receipt that said no returns after 7 days. While disappointing, we were prepared to leave at that point. She suggested we wait until she spoke with a man in the office area. After a conversation, she came back and said sorry no returns after 7 days. I can understand that policy for perishable food items, or for people trying to take advantage, but they should have made an exception to retain us as customers. I left the bag of rice behind as we will not use it. The cashier tried to convince me to take it but I explained that if we wanted to eat that rice we wouldn't have attempted to exchange it. I also added we will be shopping at Saraga whenever it opens, which we will be.
This rating is mostly based of their restaurant. The food at the restaurant is somewhat a hit or miss. Sometimes the pork will be stinky sometimes its amazing. The variety is also kind of lacking but that makes things simpler. The food is a little bit too salty but that would be fine if they offered water. My biggest complaint is that you are not given water. They always offer soup with your meal and the soup that they give is not very good. The soup its self is also salty. If you do go try the fried tofu that is something I have found is reliably good. The fish is iffy and might be very fishy. It is also very confusing sometimes where the line starts so just go where you think it starts.
I have been to Viet Hua a couple times and bought aluminum vessels, Asian spices, Thai sauces and a variety of other fruits and vegetables that I do not get in local grocery stores. The store houses a lot of item for day to day cooking and serving. The quality of the vessels worked really well for me and are still my staples 3 years later. The size and price of local Asian items is pretty on point and some times cheaper than the Indian the. Hailing from Asia I can confidently say that The authenticity of Thai sauces and spices is undeniable. Our dishes turn out lip smacking delicious. This is a good spot!
The guy behind the cooked food counter told me the ducks were fresh out from the kitchen, he claimed the place got a new cook and has the best roasted ducks. To my horror, the worst ever. It was not fresh, nor good to begin with. The bottom of the styrofoam box caught a ton of grease, and the duck had no flavor. Just drive to Chicago, i won't give them another chance for my hard earned money! Update, one of my friends says if you go there on Wednesday afternoons, you might get a freshly roasted duck. I have not tried. Instead i had one from a grocery store in Purdue university and was okay good.
This is one of my favorite stores to visit when I’m making an authentic dish. They have a great variety of items. However, the last few times I’ve been in though I’ve noticed a few items rang up differently than what they were tagged on the shelf. It would be nice if they kept the prices labeled correctly. Also noticed a few things I wanted were very close to the Best Buy dates on the shelf, so I ended up not purchasing those. Overall will be back, you just need to keep an eye on the dates & prices!
Excellent prices on my 100-year tea eggs. One thing about the tea eggs is buy the ones that don't have lye in the ingredients unless you like that flavor? (I happen not to) the ones that say salt, water, and green tea taste the very best!!! I'm down to only one left. I need to go back soon. This time I'm buying 4 or 5 boxes because their prices are very good!!! Also, I live about 47 miles away, so I have to make the trip worthwhile
Pros: -a wide selection of snack foods -beautiful dishware -exotic foods, most of which I'd never heard of -very fresh fish! They're in a tank Cons: -overwhelming stench of rotting fish -cashier was abrupt and impolite -meat case looked abysmal - meat had clearly gone bad -rotting fruit and veg still on display The only thing I'd buy here is the packaged goods and the fish (as long as I see it wiggling before they kill it).
This store has the widest selection of just about anything you could think of . The fresh herb selection is phenomenal the fresh proteins are divine - the buns kick all the a$$ - I would drown my self in all the dried noodles and dried fungus. No complaints- also bonus points hang around to hear the few that haven’t experienced the beauty of this Asian cuisine complain about the smell. Always a comedic flourish.
Tons of food choices unfortunately a bad experience with the cashier pulled their rating DOWN. So, even if the place or business is ok but the staff are not, that’s a concern. Showing a disrespect to customers is a definite NO to me. So if a customer is asking politely, I would expect a polite answer as well even if the question is not answered. The need for a customer service training is a must in this place.
Everything is in bulk, prices are reasonable. Manageable to navigate even if you only speak English. They have fresh and frozen produce that is popular on social media, including everything you might need for hot pot. Locals are friendly and will help you find something if you need it. I would come back here for ingredients not at my local big chain grocery store like Kroger or Walmart.
Excellent food. They have about everything you could possibly want. Compared to other Asian groceries around Indianapolis they by far have quantity and quality groceries. From fresh meats, seafood, vegetables, noodles and BBQ there is something for everyone for sure. They have plenty of stock of every item. Awesome place to shop for Asian food.
This place was huge! It had so much to choose from. Fresh veggies, fresh fish and other meats as well as a huge frozen foods sections. I had a hard time finding the flavors I like. I guess I lean more towards Vietnamese foods. But this place had them and newer things I would like to try. They have a bakery in there too.
Why? Just why? They added a plastic curtain in front of the store, which is so gross. Everyone who comes in have to touch and lift the plastic curtain, so gross and have no purpose other than to inconvenience people and spread germs. Not going to come back as long as the curtain is there. So gross and disgusting.
This is the go to place for Asian products in Indianapolis, from basic to exotic including live fresh seafood. They have pastries and authentic Asian BBQ meats ranging from chicken feet to Peking Duck (best place for it in Indy), but you pay a premium price though.
It was nice going to a different kind of store for a change. If you can get past the fishy smell when you first come in you'll see things you never thought of before. They sell everything from fresh fish, beef, pork, lamb, all kinds of spices to stone cookware.
Viet Hua provides Asian food items not commonly found here in the US. It's the only place where I can locally obtain some balut, shupow, longanisa sausage, Sapporo noodles, and other Filipino delicacies. Highly recommend!
This was our first time and I love the store..fresh vegetables, fruits and seafood and of course I need some little help and was impressed how nice employees were too help...and all at a reasonable price!!! …
Love the place as they have lots of options from asian snacks to fresh live seafood, but I definitely suggest to try and see the expiration date of everything (and I mean EVERYTHING) before you buy cuz damn
First time been here Nice looking and clean store Inside they have alot of choices, they have alot of great frozen seafood also, asian seasoning and other asian stuff. very reccomended place to shopping.
Extremely large and well organized Asian market. Definitely didn't expect to find something like this in Indy. Only place I found a large selection items for Chinese New Year offerings.
The fruits and vegetables are reasonably priced for the most part. I love that I can get fresh fish swimming in the water cleaned and cut to my specifications for no extra fee.
a lot of Asian food and stuff such as fresh foods, seasoning, snack, beverages, dry materials for asian meal. if you love Asian food you will not wrong with this place.
Pretty good for anything you want to cook from scratch. I wish there was more of an Asian bakery. Their ice cream also tends to be over frozen. Great ramen selection.
Clean store. Wide selection of fish and meat at counter, fresh vegetables, frozen, refrigerated and non-perishable items. Grabbed some char siu today. $10/lb cut up.
They gave out free biscuits, that's good. However, notice the expiration date! Now it is late Feb! Other than that, it is a descent Chinese supermarket.
Love the guys by the fish/seafood section, very kind guys, even offer some discount if you buy a lot or buy out some thing
I love this market, and we visit it often. It has everything we need and more. I always look forward to my trip there.
All unique kind of fish found here, also vegetables are really fresh, inside has small restaurant with lots of duck
Multiple prices mislabeled, things end up being more expensive than their labeled prices at checkout
Picked up some mooncakes they were delicious, had some roast duck it was good but room temperature.
