This bar is awesome. It’s found by a discreet door in a well-lit alley in downtown Phoenix. Entering down some stairs and a turn, reveals a speakeasy bar merging the best of the 1930s prohibition, the radio bar of the 1960s, and the open mic coffee shop of the 1990s; a woke bar of the 21st century. All manner of people are welcome and found in this hidden sanctum of craft brew and quality drinks at old coffee shop prices. Be prepared to settle in over conversations with Seattle writers, professors, lumberjack hippies, confounding artists, and college students from every discipline here. The venue is smallish but feels open and inviting. The bartender has always been a connoisseur of good drinks from craft beers to high bourbon; ever polite and attentive. The Valley Bar was recommended to me for socializing and meeting new people, and it has always followed through. Due to its subdued location, “Where’s Valley Bar” is a popular quote found all over ASU downtown and on T-shirts. Over a single malt I was engaged to a discussion of Walt Whitman and Hemingway, followed by a debaucherous board game with the strangest characters which ended at last call; a good 4 hours passed by in a minute. This leads me to my favorite part of old buildings, where it seems to be a supernatural experience as I step out the door and back into the real world. This place is great and I highly recommend it to adults of any age.

Been wanting to check this spot out for some time. Did not disappoint. Loved this place. Our kind of crowd, chill friendly vibe. Nice, old, cozy building... underground. Interesting interior with different rooms/bars. Bigger than you think it's gonna be. Stopped in mid evening, just to see what's up. Had a few drinks in The Rose Room, listening to a great, chill D.J. They offer some eats.. will try on next visit. Service is excellent! Very friendly & welcoming. Around 10pm, another D.J. in the other room started her set.. had to go check that out. Dance music! Hung out there for a long time! Love this place. May have been our first visit but not our last. Can't wait to go back! Pay parking is available in multiple areas close by.

I ordered an old fashioned and Laura pastor drinks. Reasonable prices but underwhelming as far as speakeasies go. The entry is in an alley, that's the speakeasy element to it so it's not really cool or imaginative with entry. The decor and ambiance isn't "date night worthy" which kinda defeats the purpose of being a speakeasy. Then again, this isn't as expensive as your normal speakeasy either which redeems it. It actually has a happy hour too. Most if not all speakeasies never have a happy hour. Drinks here are basic when it comes to a real speakeasy. If it's a regular bar, then it's above the rest but then why is the entrance down an alley and kinda hidden? Valley bar is like a tweener. Stuck between a dive bar and a speakeasy. It'd be better served choosing one and going all in.

Loved it very fun place to go and turn up and listen to some good music.... the down side is that they do not have enough cool air at this club I don't know why since we are in a basement pretty much it be so hot they need to get abetter ventilation system to keep everyone cool so people won't be fighting over the air vents .....also I like to go on Fridays and Saturdays but if they have (DJ J3) there he suck he don't know how to Dj he's boring and don't know how to get the crowd hype he be in his own world seems like he only play the music he like I dont like to go to the valley bar when he is there it's boring I like to go on Saturday when the women DJ they keep getting it lit and alotmof booty shaking and they play the newer music thats Poppin it be lit

Another update: Thank goodness they have dropped the medically unnecessary & dangerous Covid policies. We attended the May Bar Flies program. I tried to find out ahead of time if they were serving food again, but couldn't find the info on their website and couldn't get a person on the phone. I brought my nephew who is in a wheelchair. I knew they had an elevator, but you have to wait for a staff person to accompany you. We waited for at least 15 minutes in the smelly alley before someone finally helped us get inside. Glad it wasn't over 100 degrees the day we went. Turns out we could've ordered food. Bartenders are great and the Bar Flies programs are wonderful even though the folding chairs aren't the most comfortable. Will return.

I was kicked out of this place without any reason. If I did anything wrong I am ready to be hanged, be killed or be jailed. I have never felt this disrespected before. Just don’t be a single brown guy and you’ll be good because they were still allowing white girls in. It was the chubby white bouncer who refused to say his name because they are apparently allowed to kick you out if you’re not white or Hispanic. Deeply saddened and disrespected. I think maybe it’s best to not bother anyone and stay at home if you a single brown guy because that’s better than being kicked out and losing your self respect.

It’s the second time a coming here in the last 3 year and I absolutely love this place !!! Every time it’s a great experience!! They have great menu and great price and every night different show , the waitress was super nice and friendly and every couple minutes she make sure we have all we need , we ordered the chips and guacamole and cheese quesadillas and they both was delicious!!! It’s was so good we reorder them twice !! Definitely going to come back here and recommend to all my friends!!! The only small problem with this place is that there is no parking space around so you should come with Uber but it’s kind of understandable after all it’s downtown , HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!

  • Tabetha Le

Came here tonight for an Odie Leigh concert and while sitting at the bar, had a bit of trouble with a creepy stranger. I walked into the lobby to get some distance and was followed by the stranger. Phil, who works as security, saw that I was uncomfortable and made sure to pull me aside and check if I knew this man and if I felt comfortable. It was a huge relief to have him there and for him to notice how uncomfortable I was in the situation. The vibe was cool and bartenders kind, but I’ll be coming back here again knowing I’m in a safe spot! HUGE kudos to Phil and great appreciation

We've lived in Phoenix for over 13 years now & never even knew this spot was here in Phoenix We almost didn't go because it seemed a little sketch that you had to go down the alley way to get to it, and then once there you go down a set of rather steep stairs.....but I must say that we all had a blast while there drinking (bartender was amazing btw), playing pool, darts, and skeeball!!! The tables are all darkened with a low light above for their ambiance, so it has a rather cool, cozy, and comfortable vibe in the place! While there we also met some really wonderful people too!! We will definitely be visiting again

Valley Bar is a gem of the Phoenix bar scene. The ambiance is both sophisticated and artfully kitschy, and the lighting is pure noir pulp detective novel - all dim lights and shadowy corners. It's a delightful, classy experience with divey overtones. Five out of five, do recommend. Staff is always super cool, and the bartenders are all dynamite with a shaker and a bar spoon. One caveat, on weekends - especially after a popular show, the bar can get super crowded. Ymmv, but my preference is to enjoy the ambience is on a weeknight, unless I'm also there for a show on Friday or Saturday.

  • josie stephens

I am so annoyed right now. I am at a small concert. I am 20, not 21. I am not allowed to leave the venue and come back in, but 21 year olds are. I need to go back to my car to get something, but they won’t let me. The reason they won’t let me is because they’re worried I’ll go drink alcohol and come back in. But if a 10 year old wanted to leave the venue and come back in, I bet they would let them. Ageism. It’s extremely cold in here, and the only entrance into this place is in a sketchy back alley that smells like sewage. It was impossible to find since it was in a back alley.

We tried to visit on our bar crawl of Phoenix tonight!!! After ending up in the wrong place, by taking an open elevator, a young man politely took us to the bar area. We were met by a rude, blonde bartender who told us we needed to be carded, we are both over 50, but happy to comply! We were then left in the muffle of the bar wondering what or where to go so we tried to leave and found ourselves back in the SAME wrong area through the doors IN the bar!!!! A different going man kindly showed us the exit because at this point we were OVER IT!!!

You will absolutely have to hunt to find this place, conveniently located down an alley where you (probably, definitely) won't get murdered. It's a small venue for a show, so you're going to be in tight quarters. As someone fresh out into the world post-covid, this is a slightly scary experience. However, it does make it so you can always have a good view of the band (as long as you're tall). The cocktails are pretty good, I enjoyed the paloma I had. And they have some skeeball in the back of the bar that is always a sign of a fun time.

  • Shifty Shockwave

Not gonna lie, when I first tried to find the entrance I thought I was gonna get stabbed. Turns out I was *supposed* to enter into the alleyway on the right side of Cornish. Good pool tables and the atmosphere was cool. They search you and your bags before you enter, so I'd be wary about bringing in concealed weapons. The music gets pretty loud though. I went here to check out their Japanese city pop night once and I was pretty disappointed. They only played 2 Japanese vaporwave-style songs and the rest was just club music.

  • Tené B.

Music was extremely old and tasteless. DJ even played Bananas. Who is actually gonna be partying to that? It was insane, and no it was not throwbavk night. He never deviated from that early 2000's set. At least people were dancing, but the crowd is definitely older. Just a very awkward club in general. If you don't mind the tasteless music and you're looking for an older crowd, by all means. There's no entry fee. Not a fan of security though. Attitudes for no reason

Great lively bar with awesome drinks menu and scaled back food menu. Drink selection is wide ranging with well mixed cocktails and interesting craft beer (coffee kolsch was a particular favourite). Italian sandwich with fries was really tasty and waiting staff really helpful and chilled. Gig space is good size with low ceiling, music (The Soft Moon & Boy Harsher) was awesome and the Phoenix crowd were well up for it. Take a chance and head down that dark alley, an amazing night awaits.

  • Michael Isaksen

Went here for a concert, so not the usual "bar experience". However, it was super fun and unique, and reminded me of an underground speakeasy with lots of industrial styling and interesting items. Very dark and cool, a respite for the long, hot Arizona summer days. It's a little difficult to find, as the main entrance is a service door in an alley behind a bakery, but I think that's kind of the idea. Overall, good drinks, service, and music if you're there for a concert!

  • Daniel

Cool bar, looks really sketchy the first time you go. Would be a 5 star but the female bar tender that wears make up to look like a clown was incredibly rude and miserable. She walks up to you, blankly stares at you when you order. I ordered a few shots then she just stared at me again, walked away and proceeded to start taking other orders and just never poured them. Guess I wasn't hip enough or whatever, other bar tenders seemed very nice. Clown girl isn't nice

I was there for the entertainment and Parker Milsap did not disappoint. Valley Bar's concert room and stage are openly intimate and their drink menu is composed of the favorites of Arizona's Legends.

Extremely cool and mysterious bar/venue. I attended for Odd Future Friday and I would LOVE to see that event happen again! My only complaint is that it's SO dark and I kept needing to be aware for my surroundings and bag because I didn't feel confident to trust people around me but otherwise the music was great, decor different!, drinks refreshing, and next time I'll be back to play some billiardsl

  • Steve Palmer

Bartender was very courteous & helpful. Service was prompt. But food order was messed up by cook. Prices a bit high. Cool speskeasy vibe. But, then bar music (not music act) came on, was extremely loud at bar & in pool table area. Asked for it to be lowered & it was. But, still too loud to chat with friends. So left.

What a fun night! Valley bar has two pool tables, two skee ball machines, darts, table shuffle board and plenty of games and drinks to keep all your friends busy. Not to mention the cocktails here are handmade, the beers are always cold and there is always a lively group of millennials willing to banter and dance. Also this is underground and slightly hidden in case you didn't know.

  • Kenneth Cali

Awesome! Awesome! Awesome bar!! Would somebody PLEASE tell me the name of the DJ that was spinning around 10pm on Friday, April 3rd!! Rocked the floor! Might I also Wish/Suggest to Ownership/Management that you go and ask Alexa to play music by Kings of Tomorrow and then proceed to find a DJ that rocks like that! Fortune waiting to be made! You can thank me later!

This is a cool little bar. It’s pretty easy to find, the drinks are good and the sound was good for the band. The bar area before the band area has really good food as well. The drinks were super on point and the ambiance was adorable. (That’s the first picture) the second is of the band that I saw. It has a separate bar area. The drinks were still good though.

  • Rebekah N

One of my favorite bars to hit downtown. Such a fun vibe. You can really tell how popular it’s gotten in recent years, which rightfully so. Inwardly I do miss having it not quite as busy, I felt a bit claustrophobic with the amount of people there last night. BUT can’t beat the price of their drinks or amount of fun it is!

A rock-solid (literally) underground bar. Really good drinks with a number of cocktails themed after local AZ names and faces. The venue space is pretty limited though so unless the dude you're there for is way small, expect to be friends with the people around you.

The waiter was so nice! They had short black hair and were wearing shorts with fishnets. Just want to shout them out! The guacamole and chips was really good too! Drinks were strong and def hit the spot. Everyone was really nice and they cleared our table when it would get busy. Good music and relaxed vibes! Definitely coming here again!

Valley bar can be difficult to find but worth the walk through the alleyway. It’s a great spot for local music and djs. The drinks are good and well priced. The only reason it’s four stars instead of five because there is only one bathroom and that line gets very long on a Saturday night. Other than that this place is so fun!

  • Joe L

Fantastic bar. Great cocktail menu. Comfy seating. Spooky shadow mobiles. Had to remove a star because they didn't have blue curacao and I was not able to order a Blue Wave shot for my colleague. May as well have a sign on the door that says "No patrons whose oldest kid is finally old enough to watch their siblings."

Can't say enough good things! Lovely people, creative and tasty drinks, and I loved the atmosphere! Takes a little searching around to get to - well worth it. The stage area was pretty warm and I think the band got a little exhausted though. The stage area also has a bar, so I managed to stay well hydrated :)

Very unique location with entrance in an alley way. You go downstairs with the lounge on your left and music venue through the doors straight ahead. Saw some great bands this past Saturday. Very cool place to see music. Got the loaded fries off the menu in the lounge between bands. Will definitely be back!

Well after being a little intimidated by having to go down a dark stinky alley we were pleasantly surprised to find a cool little funky bar in an old speak easy kind of place. We were assured by a friendly bartender that was out in front of the building that the alley was perfectly safe …

Such a cozy and fun spot to grab drinks and eats with friends and see a show. It’s not a big venue but that’s what I like about it - it’s intimate and has great acoustics. I was really impressed with the food menu, awesome options for bar snacks. Overall, fab spot to enjoy a night out!

Valley bar is a staple in my rotation. Good music, cool people, fun drinks. The spot has a little bit of something for everyone. Pool tables, skeeball, lounge area, dance hall. I don't even have to wait forever to get into the bathroom. This place is a keeper.
