I am so disappointed! The hostel has big potential but unfortunately there are way too much deficiencies so it's getting into my FLOP 10 Hostels I've ever been. What a pity! And I've been to a many of them during my trip around the world. Cons: - half an hour after eating the salad bowl for lunch my friend got stomachache and over the day she became diarrhea and had to vomit. She didn't eat anything else that day but the breakfast and the bowl at the hostel so I don't want to burden the hostel with guilt... but.. yeah.. you know what I mean. - disgusting toilet seats. Please spend some money for new ones, they look so bad, baaaaaah!!! In general the bathroom looks rundown - you can't lock the toilet door in the upper floor of the main house. Well, you can, but there is a slot of almost 5 cm. No privacy at all. One of the two showers can't be locked as well. - almost no shelf space in the bedroom or bathroom - dirty bedclothes in all of our 3 beds. They were changed but now they have holes everywhere. Bad quality - we can't close the door to the terrace of our 3 bed room and from the neighbors 2 bed room, which has also access to the terrace, you can go into our room. No safety is given. - cracks in the doors of the room so you can even look inside even when everything is locked - useless mosquito net for the beds - prices of the drinks could be better. I also pay 5.000 TSH for a beer at a nice beach club an Coco beach. But you get 10% discount if you're staying in the hostel - you can't split the bill after asking to pay separate. That's a pity. - kinda bright at night Cons-neutral: - very loud in the evening but good for socializing - when was the last time the outdoor pillows were cleaned? The are looking very dirty und not hygienic Pros: - great outdoor area with big screen for the world cup and other sport games - nice bar - good breakfast - comfy beds - good aircon in the room - good location - In general friendly stuff - good for socializing

My friend and I stayed 3 nights at the slow leopard hostel. Henry and all of the staff are so kind and hospitable. The service at the bar is quick and their food is yummy. The Friday night amapiano music was so great to experience. My friend and I were looking for a nice hostel to have a restful stay and slow leopard met all of our needs for these criteria. Henry also helped us have a great experience on an improvised safari during busy Christmas times. He recommended us to his friend Abeid who runs safari tours. We went to Mikumi and had the best safari experience and hike to the beautiful waterfall of Udzungwa. We saw 8 lions with our guide which was unheard of. I honestly couldn’t have imagined a more professional guide than Abeid. He made sure we had everything organized from the moment we met him until the time we left Mikumi. It’s important to have trustworthy people as your tour guides and I think Henry made sure this would be the case for us. I am glad our “winging it” trip ended up at slow leopard and meeting our guide turned new friend Abeid. ⭐️⭐️

We stayed here for an entire month (!!) in Jan/Feb 2023, and I can say from experience that this place is an absolute gem. We stayed in the 3 bed room, which was very comfortable and crucially had good AC that worked perfectly throughout our stay. You may read in some reviews that the rooms are basic and that the bar area can be noisy at night - but I can assure you that we slept comfortably for our entire stay! The noise is pretty minimal and the rooms have everything you need, including plug sockets and lights beside each bed. The free breakfast with a choice of coffee or juice is a generous addition on an already good value hostel. The food served for lunch and dinner is also a good selection and invariably great quality. The bar/lounge area was a comfortable place to hang out and relax, and they regularly showed sports in the evening. The entire staff were extremely welcoming and approachable. The owner of the hostel, Henry, is a gentleman who really went the extra mile to ensure we were enjoying our stay. I won't hesitate to stay here again when I next visit Dar.

Stayed there 4 nights from 15-18 Dec 2022. It was a good place in general. Henry was very helpful and assist us to book the bus to Kilwa Masoko and arrange transportation to the station too, besides helping me find some shopping items. Pros: - Safe place to walk even after sunset. - Close to Slipway with heaps shops and a small supermarket. - Close to many eateries and cafes. - Helpfully staffs and they even assist with Bolt on day one. Over all good vibe and nice place to meet other travelers. Cons: - Lots of mosquitoes at night, and flies during the day - It gets loud sometimes with the bar at night, especially on weekends - Some staffs, especially at the bar require more training on handling staff. They do not even smile. - Wi-Fi is not reliable and I ended up using my own data. - Housekeeping sloppy sometimes, it took them more than 6 hours to change bedsheets. Which they removed in morning and I had to ask them multiple times in the evening to get me new one!

Read this before staying at the hostel... I had higher hopes for the Slow Leopard after hearing that it’s the go-to hostel in Dar! I realize now that it’s mainly a sports bar that happened to have a few nice spare rooms (one by the garden and one upstairs) so they furnished them with wooden bunk beds and created a hostel. The bartenders are the hostel staff, so they’re not the most attentive (because they’re working two jobs) but are overall quite kind. The free breakfast is pretty nice (you can order one of 3 things off a special menu) and is vegetarian friendly... but overall their food menu is unusually expensive and only has meaty fast food dishes (with the exception of a veggie burger and salad.) The bar makes most It’s money on drinks, which are quite a pricier than other places, so they don’t seem to put much love/effort into the food. So yes, maybe it’s the best option in Dar for hostels BUT aside from its friendly staff and nice beds, I can not recommend the Slow Leopard.

5 star review for the Slow Leopard restaurant/bar in Dar Es Salaam – the atmosphere was a tropical paradise, the service was friendly and attentive, and of course most importantly, the FOOD was worthy of return visits!!!! The selection, the portions and the quality are top notch. A burger is not just a burger here, whether you want beef, chicken or aubergine – you will not be disappointed! I had the beef and the chicken on different visits and my friend had the aubergine twice!!! I wish I had time to go again to try the slider plate! If you haven’t been here, you’re missing out! Oh and I almost forgot, the live music was great too! And if you get a chance to chat with the owner, Henry - lucky you - he's engaging and has lots of info for things to do in the area, safari's and etc!!!!

The Hostel itself is a very nice place to sleep and spend some time in. The restaurant is very well designed and the whole hostel has a very relaxing, pleasant atmosphere. But most of all I would like to mention how awesome the two owners of the hostel were. I arrived there by myself and I wasn't sure, how I could an adequat covid-test to fly back to my homecountry. When the owners found out about my problem, they immediately offerd to help me, called the office of my airline with me and told me where I can visit them. In general they were very friendly, laid back and made me feel safe and welcome at their hostel. I can only recommend this place!

Can't say enough good things about this place. They accommodated a 5AM arrival to start our visit which was comforting. The staff and service was great. Rooms are basic but have reliable and good AC (so long as the power is working which is a standard issue in the region). The owner Henry was always available and personally arranged courier service for me to send a package - a process I had no idea how to figure out and he made it so easy. Really great place. The restaurant is really good but closer to American prices. There are plenty of cheap options nearby. Pharmacy and great smoothies right next door, grocery and ATMs close, and beach access very close as well. Would def stay again

The owner was helpful and quick at replying to my emails and organized an airport pick up for a good price. Even though I arrived at 4am the staff was very friendly and even allowed me to have the included breakfast at 11am. It’s a nice jungle like setting with a chilled vibe to have a drink. The 5-bed dorm was a bit cramped but clean. The A/C was difficult to regulate, even at 25C it was very cold also there was no place to store your valuables. Otherwise you have everything you need:) it’s a quite and safe area close to the beach but you can also take a bus to the city center.

Good location and atmosphere. Rooms were fine, clean and good aircon and the showers had good pressure. Internet was ok downstairs, most of the time. A good place if you're a digital nomad. Staff helpful and attentive. Food was very good and a good place to socialise as an expat with a great outdoor space Love the leafy design of the bar / restaurant area, it's a nice little oasis in Dar. This is the 2nd stay I’ve had here, this time with my two young boys. Also walkable distance from slipway waterfront. I’ll definitely stay here again when I'm next in Dar.

A really cool place to stay in Dar es salaam. Henry the owner was really helpful with tips and advice for things to do in dar and how to catch the bus to the airport. The rest of the staff were smiley and friendly too making it a nice atmosphere. It's a great place to meet people with loads of areas to chill out outside. The dorm was comfortable with good ac. The location is cool. It's walking distance from coco beach and you can catch a bus to the centre from right outside the hostel.

This is a great place to stay when I Cape Town. The slow leopard hostel area is small but very well done with nice comfortable beds, air conditioning & lockers. They also had the best showers that I have had in Tanzania yet, super hot. As the for place itself, it’s centred around the bar and restaurant area that has live music throughout the week. When we arrived this place was packed with locals & expats alike so if your looking for a lively place to stay then this place has you covered. It’s located in the more affluent area of town where you can find nice cafes a cool bakery and all the other things you need as a traveller.

We (couple on a year trip) stayed at the Slow Leopard for 4 days. The hostel had great facilities with a comfy area, well stocked bar, clean rooms and beds, great food from the kitchen (fish curry a must try) and friendly staff. Hostel is situated in a nice area with cafes and restaurants close by to mix things up. One of the owners (Henry) was always available to provide help and advice, both locally and around the African region in general. The hostel was a good base to head out during the day to explore Dar’s markets and bustling streets. We would highly recommend to anyone passing through

I had a great couple days in this hostel. Staff id extremely helpful and accommodating. Rooms clean and spacious, with air con. On top of that hostel has a huge open space which feels like a tropical garden, granting you a rescue from the outside word. In-house bar and restaurant has also good things to offer

Peccato che: - la musica disco a volume alto in un posto del genere proprio no, sarebbe stata più appropriata se soft e rilassante. - il servizio di cucina sia lento - la qualità del cibo sia parecchio scarsa: chicken curry con tre (!) cubetti di pollo e basta. Il resto riso, una specie di piadina e della verdura sospetta; quattro mini burgers di pollo fritto dove il pollo quasi non si vedeva, secco e insipido...e pane stopposo. Buon posto al massimo per una bevuta in compagnia.

I've been here a few times and always have fun, the decor is laid back and relaxed. Great place to catch some live music, watch the world cup, etcetera. I don't usually write reviews, but today I went back because my wallet had fallen out of my purse on my way out the door at some point. The staff is so honest here, all my cash and cards were still in there and they had it locked in a safe until I realize it was missing and returned for it. Truly a great place with great and honest staff!! Thank you Slow Leopard! Our favorite place to chill in Dar hands down.

Excellent vibes, love the greenery in the restaurant area. Rooms have good AC. Great place to stay if exploring Masaki. Slipway is 5 min walk away. Staff friendly and helpful. Included guest breakfast was sufficient and varied :) they accommodate my gluten sensitivity too so big plus! Would stay again. Thanks to Henri for making us feel welcome even when we arrived at 5am. Also def check out the smoothie place next door. Top notch

Slow Leopard is a great value for this location. It's in a very safe, walkable neighborhood of Masaki (even at night); just 5 minutes walk to Slipway food and nightlife, 1 minute walk to two wonderfully air conditioned coffee shops, Ridge Coffee and Wild Flour. Tasty Dee's brews up some good beers right next door too. The wifi is very good, the staff are very friendly and helpful with anything you need... especially the morning crew. The rooms are air conditioned which makes sleeping much more comfortable.

We arrived late and although we wrote an email in advance, the check in was a disaster. We were given two beds, and the beds didn't have bed sheets. I told the guy and he didn't know we're to find some. He tried communicating with his boss but no one was answering. I told him it would be unhygienic to sleep without the bed sheets. At the end I was happy because he gave us another room that was good but it took almost 40 minutes. On the up side the breakfast was really good and the bar looks cool.

Slow Leopard offer affordable accommodation. But they have one of the best sports bar showing all the sports. You can either go there for a drink or a bite if you wish. I was impressed that the chef worked up an all chicken-no-ham sandwich at my request. The sandwich was as good as it gets with a blend of veggies, chicken and sauces. A friendly and live atmosphere and good place to meet new people. Highly recommended if you're feeling bored and looking for a quick meal and don't mind the noise.

Good breakfast. Great helpful staff - they organised my trip to the Mafia ferry, although I should have checked if the ferry was going in advance - spent two days stuck at the ferry terminal. The dorm beds were nice and private with own charge point, a light, mosquito net, curtain and a shower with good pressure, western toilet, toilet paper, cleaned daily. Good happy hour options apparently.

Perfect place to arrive in Tanzania. You don't get overwhelmed by the culture so fast because it's quite western here. Many travelers who are about to leave soon, who can help you with ideas and plans. Henry the owner is also really nice, he helped me get my bicycle and a sim card. I will go there again. I stayed in the 10person dorm. You have private bunks with a small locker and a power outlet each. I think it's totally fine. The outside area is also really nice. Wifi is working

As a hostel, it’s the the best you’ll find in Dar. Lovely and helpful staff, great facilities, and a trendy bungalow-style design conducive to socializing. As a restaurant and bar, it can be whatever you want it to be. A quiet breakfast spot, a scenic lunch, a relaxed dinner with family or friends, or a lively night out with good drinks and music. Burger is super. Beef patty is original and savory. I love it because it is not salty, not greasy, not a kik, but delicious. When you visit on weekdays from 5pm to 7pm, it’s ‘Happy hour’ time when the drinks are discounted. Also, as you order any burger, the draught beer(500ml) is served as only TZS 1,000. You can order the burger composed of ingredients which you choosed. If you can’t decide what you eat, I recommend ‘Classic burger’.

Super hostel with a great vibe with friendly accommodating staff. Good food too and sharp prices with daily happy hours. Hard to leave this place in the middle of Massaki, Dar es Salam. Will be back

Slow is a staple in Masaki. Cool vibe, good food and beer (can even get draft beer there) and a place where you'll meet a whole range of people (likely to be mostly expats). They often have parties, events and live music. If you're a sports fan, this may be the place to watch games. If you are not a football/rugby etc fan (like me) it can get loud, crowded and rowdy, so just keep that in mind. Otherwise totally worth checking out.

Staff here are incredible. Felt very safe. Ladies at the bar were so protective of me during my stay. Massai at the front were very vigilant and careful not to let in strange sorts at night. Lovely bar downstairs with great vibes. Met lots of travellers during my stay. Would definitely recommend and would definitely go back! I’m forever grateful <3

This has been the nicest hostel I've stayed at in Tanzania. The owners are extremely nice and knowledgeable and pointed me towards some lesser known places that have been some of my highlights on this trip. The bar and restaurant has an awesome vibe with amazing burgers! Real coffee for breakfast!! And also amazing other food for breakfast as well. Air-conditioning in the rooms are so nice. Thursday has amazing live music!

A lovely courtyard hostel away from the hustle and bustle of Dar. Great food too. Nice relaxing atmosphere - 100% worth the trip from central Dar. To reach here by public transport, first catch the DART (blue rapid buses) to “Morocco” - 750 KSh. Then catch a minibus to Masaki (500 KSh). They go from next to DART terminal and drop you off just a few meters from the hostel.

It was my first stay at a hostel a broad, and it was a great experience and unique vibe for me. The staff at this hostel supported me greatly in particular Miss Diana. Great customer service, great offers like the happy hour, and off course the serene environment and the diversity of the fellow travelers. I will definitely visit again, peace

Very popular backpackers in Dar. Nice clean rooms. Another shared toilet upstairs woud have been an advantage.. Showers with good water pressure. Really good homemade food, and the coffee us great. A good selection and choice for breakfast. Pass by here for their live music nights and rocking weekends. If going to Dar book early as the place gets pretty busy. Will definitely be returning to this vibrant place.

Went to The Slow Leopard to have a snack and drink, and check out the vibe. Everything was amazing. The prices are average, normal Dar prices. The location is very good. If you need a location on your travels this will be a very good idea, what I experience from thw restaurant sure the Hostle, will be very good.

I stayed here for three days and loved it. It has very good rates considering the location. Masaki in Dar is a relatively posh neighbourhood. Their customer service is very good and they go out of their way to serve. Shout out to Diana and her team.

One of my favorite places to hangout during the day. You can meet lots of outsiders and experience fine architecture. Great ambience. Amazing food at decent enough prices. You could literally come chill for an entire day, maybe watch a game and drink couple of beers. Take extra precaution once dark cause there's a lot of mosquitoes.

Best bit about this place is the Liquid Alchemistic man Mikey, best mixologist anywhere and makes the Slow such an awesome joint. The live music on Thursdays is the best part of the week. The Sunday Retox brunch is a great way to finish the weekend and start your week. Check it out, you won't regret it. Plus the crowd is dope!!

Another hidden gem. Its very easy to pass. I didn't know it existed but it's great for going to watch a match. Having a drink. Their food is also good. Not a very diverse crowd. Alot of expats. Good place to do some networking though. It's ambiance is very relaxing. It's hidden but once you find it. You will keep going back.

Best hostel in Dar es Salaam. Stayed there during the weekend and had an awesome time. The atmosphere is really nice and the facilities are great, would highly recommend!

I will come here every time I go to Dar! It's a very pleasant and laid back restaurant with some seriously good food. I'm already craving the chicken bacon sandwich again! It's almost worth it to come into Dar just to eat here... almost. I also stayed the night in the associated hostel and had a very pleasant stay.

Granola in the morning was so delicious. Warm water was not working but wit that weather not a must have. Personal very helpful AC is not smelling bad as in other hostels Was a nice stay

Cool place to meet other travellers/expats with comfy beds and restaurant that has many options for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The rooms are a bit overpriced for staying in a 10 bed mixed dorm. There is air conditioning in the dorm and 2 bathrooms. However, there are no mosquito nets and loads of mosquitos.

Didn't stay here, just came for dinner. Pretty cool vibe, conveniently located. Good menu, lots of interesting choices. Had a beef burger and chips. Tasted fresh and well prepared. Will definitely return.

Sehr stilvolles Hostel mit sehr schönem und gemütlichem Bar- und Außenbereich und liebe zum Detail. Viele Sitzgelegenheiten für einen gemütlichen Abendausklang, gutem Essen und guter Musik. Nettes und hilfsbereites Personal, saubere Zimmer. Nur leider fiel bei uns nachts die Klimaanlage immer wieder aus.

The staff were really helpful to help arrange activities around Tanzania and Henry is a wealth of knowledge to help arrange something like a safari or problem solve a scheme or anything around Dar you’re trying to do.

Good place to meet fellow travelers and get situated before exploring the rest of Tanzania. Bar and restaurant downstairs and also good, though a bit pricey compared with other spots nearby. I happened to be there during a South Africa vs English-Irish lions rugby match and the atmosphere was lit

The bar and restaurant are a nice place to stay with friendly people and delicious food. The private room was not what i expected. To noisy and to light at night. Also the bed was a bit small and to short for me. The clean restroom with good shower was not en-suite. Not worth the 50 USD i paid.

Nice hostel, expensive food 24.000 tzs for main dish, good coffee, good shower, toilet paper was empty a few times, rooms have AC, mattress was wore out, rooms are very full and beds close to each other and corridors between beds very narrow

Friendly staff, really helpful. Nice vibes with lots of plants. Great food! Were really accomodating to our plans (we left in the night and they prepared breakfast takeaways)

Best hostel in Dar's expat area! Henry and Eddie created a wonderful small and cozy place for delicious food and some good nights in their freshly renovated dorm or double room. We really appreciated the welcoming atmosphere and all the handy advices we got. Thanks guys, we'll be back!

Fantastic layout with friendly staff, amazing food, and great vibes. Check in was super easy and smooth and the owner, Henry, was super helpful and even sorted out my airport transfer personally. Definitely not a spot to miss in Dar!

Food service here is literally slow.. as thr name goes. Bring repellant, mosquitoes are everywhere. But the burger is good here

The rooms and facilities were very clean. The staff was super nice and helpful. Even though we arrived in the evening, they managed to arrange bus tickets and transport to the bus terminal for us for the next morning.

A well run ex pat bar. Friendly cool atmosphere. Servers are on the ball usually. Food is decent, maybe a bit pricey but so is their rent probably. Could do with a few more Tanzanian punters but thats no one’s fault. Rugby on tv gets priority.

Lovely place to go and enjoy your drinks with all the Expat of Dar es Salam.. drinks are reasonably priced and it was good hangout joint..

Lovely place, great vibe! We went after a friend raved about the burgers, tried their classic beef burger...was a little dry but delicious! Sadly the service was so very slow, they had only two servers for the whole crowd!

Affordable accommodation in the best area in Dar with a friendly atmosphere. We will be back again.

Nice pub. The crowd here is overwhelmingly white tourists and expats but welcoming nonetheless with good vibes. Great for catching a game of football or rugby with its simple and minimalist decor.

Nice spot, very small. Large Expat community. They do show large sports events, which is nice. Decent beers at a decent price. I can not say anything about the food, as I have never eaten there.

Good popular bar, with a garden area with seating as well. Popular for watching sport and meeting up. Accommodation is available but I haven't seen it. Staff are competent and prices are good.

Nice relaxing place, great cocktails. Only issue, which is easily overcome is mosquitos. However, the bar puts mosquito repellent on the tables so no problem.

Good dorm beds, very comfortable. The prize includes breakfast which is very nice. The staff is also very nice. In the evening the bar is often crowded. Just the wifi should be improved.

The ambiance , the price is reasonable , a wide range of drinks to choose from including my hot beverages. Great music. Kids are enjoying it as well( I'd love to come with my kids)

Good value for money! The rooms/beds are good and clean. All rooms have AC and some beds even a mosquito net. Good location / close to the Slipway pier. Burgers are awesome!

Good clean rooms, tasty food at the restaurant, bands on Thursdays and lots of spots to hang out nearby. Good place to spend a few nights in dar if you're travelling through

On the peninsula, cool and nice one for foods, drinks, and music, live bands, customer care is good, clean and we'll arrange place, secured parking, don't miss to be here.

Nice pub great burgers. Although a very expat crowd - if that's what you're looking for you'll enjoy. If you want local flavor you're in the wrong place.

I didn’t stayed in the hotel but I visited the bar in the backyard. Relaxed atmosphere with an interesting selection of drinks and craft beers.

I went for lunch here one day. The food was good and the setup is really nice. It’s quite dead at lunchtime with no music playing or anything.

Best Hostel in Dar. 30,000Tsh per night in the dorm. Air conditioning. Cool expat locals frequent the bar for european sports shows.
