Been a member of this surgery for the past 3 years and never once felt comfortable here. Horrible and rude receptionists. They don't give information when asked and don't give appointments even when they are available. The rare case they do is when you tell them all your medical problems and history even when you don't want to for privacy & because they are not doctors. I've had Megi(I'd asked her name) tell me over phone that the next available appointment was in 3 weeks. When I asked if there was anything sooner, she said, "It's a busy time, you have to take an appointment in advance." When I said, "I don't know when I'll fall ill." I was responded with, "Next appointment is in 3 weeks." I got to know about emergency appointments only through IAPT. And later I wasn't given emergency appointments even when I had panic attacks as "they were not an emergency" even when I explained I was having problem breathing. I called twice when I was feeling at risk & unsafe, and got rude responses and no help at all. This, even though IAPT & CIPTS say your GP should give you an emergency appointment if you're feeling at risk. I tried to talk to Dr Amit Abbott about it, and he talked to me condescendingly about how getting appointments is always hard. That doctors are busy and people like children and pregnant women need them. Implying other people's needs are less important? Once I'd got a blood test done. I got a call from the reception that my results were back and I needed to see the doctor. Then later I got another call saying that there was no action needed from my side. When I said I had got completely different information a while back, the receptionist said she had no idea about what was said to me earlier. I had to go in to the surgery to confirm the next steps. When I told the receptionist, a black woman (identifier for later), that I was told two opposite things, she defensively said, "See this is what happened when you get impatient and call us before your complete results are back." When I told her I never called and both times they had called me, she checked the information and started explaining that two different people make comments on the patient's tests, still never explaining the discrepancy or what I needed to do. I had to eventually take a doctor's appointment to clarify that. At times I asked for after hours appointment but was told they were not for me (?!) and got annoyed responses when I asked for more information. Once I was being told no appointment until next two weeks, so I told her I'd been bleeding for 3 days from a fissure, that's when she said OK come this week Thursday! And it was NOT even an emergency appointment, so why was that time not offered to me earlier? Recently I had a long seizure like attack and was taken to the A&E, after which I was told to see the GP. And of course, to get an appointment, I had to tell the receptionist the whole A&E story without which she refused to proceed. And after the story, she told me to get an emergency appointment later at 4 pm. Once I asked the receptionist about the after hours appointments, she said, "we don't do them". When I said my husband got one a few weeks ago, she said we do only on Monday and Wednesday and today is Monday and they are all gone! So the next appointment is Thursday. I asked what about Wednesday and she irritably said you've asked enough number of times, the next appointment is on Thursday. Yesterday I went in for my appointment. Their check-in kiosk crashed twice when I tried it, so I went to the reception where I was treated by the same black receptionist (as mentioned above) with utter disrespect. She kept gesturing rudely, telling me to wait behind the SIGN, let random people in front of me and was unapologetic even when I got late because of all this! This is their level of communication where they are rude, give little to no information, lie about appointments, get defensive/ never admit their mistakes and then behave as if they are doing us a favour. It's unprofessional, unethical and a disgrace to the profession.
I have been a patient since SMC opened therefore count myself well within my rights to write this review. It started wonderfully, but the last two years have shown a progressive and negative change to how I have been treated by staff. I no longer feel comfortable calling the surgery and absolutely not speaking to reception in person or seeing the majority of the doctors. Two years ago I began to suffer immensely with my mental health which had subsequent physical symptoms which I could not handle without medication. I was prescribed anti-depressants which exacerbated my particular symptoms but the surgery's response was simply to continue to increase my dosage instead of, as I requested, evaluating me to check my diagnosis as well as make sure I was on the correct medication for my body. This has continued for two years. I have had several instances where I've called up in an absolute state to try to book an appointment and have not only been treated like a nuisance, but when I explained I'm having panic attacks I was dismissed and talked down to like a child. In person, when I have been unable to pick up my medication I have been belittled in front of the full reception area whilst weeping from the stress of my mental and physical symptoms. I have been told to "just take deep breaths" and and "I can refer you for CBT" (which I have already received and does not fully manage and does not treat my conditions.) I have had my partner in the room to try to help convey that I am not coping with deep breathing, mindfulness, or doing things that make me happy, but the doctors we have seen have been progressively more dismissive. The fact I have chest pains and palpitations (I also have a minor heart condition) exacerbated by my mental health has not prompted more than a motion to calm myself during panic episodes. I have had to be signed off work for weeks at a time to "rest" but have been dismissed when I've asked for help or, at the least, an evaluation. The other major failing is one I am finally having addressed after years of suffering. I have chronic tonsillitis; I have the infection on average once every two months and it can be debilitating. I have been speaking to doctors at SMC for years about the frequency and ferocity of the infections. I found out some months ago I have been lied to about the requirements for a tonsillectomy. I had two emergency hospital visits due to this and all the doctors I've seen in hospital are astonished I have not had them removed yet. Only with two strongly worded letters from two hospitals have the SMC finally referred me. Due to currently available information, I should have been referred years ago. I have been humiliated by several of the receptionists at SMC and treated like a child and an inconvenience by the doctors. I am finally able to be taken seriously by doctors, but only by the benefits of my career. The treatment I have received has caused me immense physical and emotional pain for the past years This review has also been posted to the NHS review website.
Called the surgery at 9 am today, informing them about my 1-year-old daughter's unwell state, with a sore throat despite trying ibuprofen and calpol. Requested to rule out a throat infection and possibly need antibiotics. The receptionist apologized, stating no appointments were available and advised calling back at 4 pm. Concerned about the weekend closure, I visited the surgery at 3:50 pm to secure an appointment. Upon arrival, the receptionist informed me that no appointments were left. I mentioned the morning conversation, noting that afternoon slots were usually available. The response was a firm denial. I persisted, emphasizing my daughter's age and the need for a checkup. Mentioned the past availability of emergency slots at 4 pm. The receptionist insisted it wasn't 4 pm yet. Accepting this, I questioned the initial denial, suggesting they could have advised waiting until 4 pm. It felt like she wanted to dismiss me. Waiting until 3:59 pm, I approached the receptionist, who then reluctantly scheduled an appointment for 4:30 pm. Finally seeing the doctor, my daughter was diagnosed with ear, chest, and throat infections, receiving the necessary antibiotics. While the doctor were excellent, the receptionist's overall experience was distressing. They seemed quick to reject without assessing each case or using common sense. The immediate response was consistently "no appointment." My persistence prevented my daughter from prolonged suffering and a potential A&E visit over the weekend.
I wanted to express my sincere thanks to SMC and especially Dr Kelechi and Dr Abbott. On 27th December I had the unfortunate experience of having to attend CUH A&E. After 6 hours of waiting and then being told my blood samples had been lost and would have to be repeated was unreasonable. The A&E doctor did not listen or act on my signs and symptoms. I mentioned I had a 4 week old baby at home and was breastfeeding. I left A&E after 8 hours with no pain relief and no confirmed diagnosis. I was distraught. I had no alternative but to make an emergency appointment at SMC. I was seen by the locum, Dr Kelechi, who on seeing me apologised for keeping me waiting (only 15 minutes after appointment). Going back to basic training, he listened to me, he physically examined me and immediately arranged an emergency ultrasound at CUH. He reassured me and agreed about the diagnosis I had been repeating to the A&E doctor who dismissed what I was saying. I had the emergency ultrasound and the very next day received a telephone call from the Senior Partner at SMC who discussed the ultrasound results, and my diagnosis was confirmed, what I had been saying all along. The locum prescribed pain relief also advising of the contraindications with breastfeeding. Thank you to everyone at SMC who helped me. I will be writing to PALS outlining my terrible experience at CUH and maybe their senior A&E consultants need to go back to basics and take a leaf out of these doctor's book!
I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Ahmet and Dr. Bobby for the exceptional care they've provided me. It never ceases to amaze me how they go the extra mile by personally following up with phone calls, even when my blood results come back normal. The teamwork between both doctors is evident, and it's reassuring to know that my health is their top priority. The seamless continuity of care and their thoughtful referrals to appropriate services have made a significant difference. I also want to acknowledge the outstanding care I've received from Croydon University Hospital. A special shout-out to the reception team, whose tireless efforts to secure appointments have not gone unnoticed. Having doctors and a reception team that genuinely care about my well-being is something I'm truly grateful for. The communication about scan results and the clear explanation of the next steps by my doctor is invaluable. I feel fortunate that my family and I are registered at this surgery, and I want to extend a big thank you to everyone involved. This, to me, is the epitome of an excellent NHS GP practice.
Had abnormal bleeding from pride and joy area which my body is total normal and healthy it was abnormal a really weird colour (wasn't period blood) was told over the phone with a telephone consultation some antibiotics hadn't even looked me still no idea if it's anything serious or not. It seems to have cleared up but I do get the odd pain down there randomly I now have no doctors because to be quite frank I'm sick and tired of stuck up doctors thinking they know something and jump to conclusions when it's far from the case. I'd rather have no doctor and pay private don't trust any doctor from many bad experiences I've had this just put the icing on the cake tbh
My partner and I have been patients at this practice for over 14 years. Dr Bobby Abbott has been always extremely kind and helpful. Getting an appointment as not been difficult but I only ever want to see Dr Bobby Abbott so that can bring with it some delay. Receptionists are always nice and helpful. He diagnosed my partner with a very complicated illness before any consultant. His treament and prgnonsi was excellent. I have worked in social care for over 28 years and dealt with many GP's this practice is excellent. I have seen the negative reviews but perhaps this could be about there approach as I have witnessed some very rude people at the surgery. Mike Kent
My mother visited this surgery with symptoms of deep vein thrombosis (a life-threatening condition but easy to diagnose). After attending the surgery on 3 different occasions the doctors were unable to diagnose her and kept giving her anti-inflammatory pills and anti-biotics to take. they disregarded her concerns and were confrontational and rude when she pleaded for them to take her seriously. She was finally referred to a doctor at Croydon University Hospital who walked into the room, looked at her legs and said, "That's deep vein thrombosis". Need I say more.
I was only 10-15 minutes late for the appointment. I called and said I was on my way, but I was 10 minutes late. I was on the way with my baby in bad weather, strong wind, rain and snow, and I asked them to push our appointment forward by 10 minutes. They told me that they could only take two hours. But I have to go halfway home in this bad weather, and two hours later I have to leave the house in this weather. Wouldn't the doctor have waited 10 minutes for us?!
If you are lucky and could connect someone you may get an appointment for a few days later. Doctor gives you a few rings after 15 minutes of your original appointment and leaves a note saying "I have called but you did not answer" Please call back. When you call back receptionist says I will let doctor know He /she may / may not call you later" and guess what no one calls back. Unfortunately google does not allow me to submit 0 stars...
I am immensely grateful for the exceptional care Dr. Amit has provided to my mother over the many years. His empathy and dedicated approach to her well-being have truly made a difference. The area is incredibly fortunate to have Dr. Amit as a GP, and we wholeheartedly recommend him and the practice to anyone seeking a compassionate and professionally run GP.
Have to agree the receptionists used to be horrible, they have made so many mistakes, clueless and are so rude. They seem to have nicer ladies on the phone now. The two main Abbott Drs are good and Dr Fletcher but the rest are terrible. The NHS service as a whole is pretty poor these days, but if something is serious the Drs are good at fast referral.
Worst receptionist ever and that I'd their front door. I swear one of the receptionist has a mental heath challenge. One minute can be normal next can be very rude. You would think the sign they put up about clients being rude their staff is license for the reverse. Doctors are wonderful but at this point would just try change surgery.
Seems as if there is no actual medical knowledge in here, symptoms looked up on google infront of me and read the solution. No tests or checks, last time i went they said my son had a life threatening infection and needed to go a and e asap. Terrified we went to the hospital and they said its nothing and doesn't even need antibiotics.
My family have been with Dr. Abbott for 12 years. I’ve always found the reception staff to be polite and helpful. My experience of Dr. Abbott is that he is thorough and caring, he has often gone the extra mile with my family and my care. I can’t say the same for the other GPs though haven’t seen them often enough to give a review.
My family & I have been patients at The Shirley Medical Centre for a number of years. The doctors, staff, nurses and the healthcare assistant are professional, attentive and caring. They have done a superb job during very difficult times and are a credit to our NHS. Based on our experience, we would highly recommend this Surgery.
The Shirley Medical centre always provides excellent service. The GP practice is clean and tidy, the receptionists are friendly and happy to help. Furthermore, the doctors and nurses are very informative and helpful. I would highly recommend this GP practice for those living in the local area!
My G.P. is - reliable - listens to me - gives sound advice - treats me as an individual and not as a number - treats me with respect - I feel privileged to be a patient with my G.P. Surgery - I have been seen Bobby, Dr Yewande, Dr Fletcher and Dr Abbott they are all good General Practitioners.
Last week I visited for a routine check up and saw Dr. Ogunyemi. She was an absolute pleasure and her genuine concern for my health really made me feel valued. The reception team are professional and friendly also. Overall a great experience. Nikki who took my blood sample is amazing.
Impossible to get an appointment these days. You can be number 1 in the queue for almost half an hour, how could that be possible. How on earth you can have a sore throat for almost 2 weeks & wait a whole week for an appointment.
The worst Medical Centre ever, the staff are so rude and not helpful at all, I have been needing a appointment since may and they still can’t get me in I have several different issues but no doctor to talk to. Awful place.
Receptionist is horrible, one of the most condescending, hostile & miserable people I have had the displeasure of coming across. Should not be working in a doctors surgery where patients are already ill and anxious!
Excellent practice. The Drs are amazing taking time to explain things . Caring for you in such a wonderful way not rushed and treating with respect. The reception staff are also excellent. So polite and helpful
my wife been going there for years, even when we've moved they still allowed her to stay. polite and friendly staff. Dr.Ogunyemi is very understanding and compassionate. Thank you for all your good work …
Awful, unhelpful surgery. Don't register with these cretins. The Abbott's are awful, they don't listen. Nothing worse than a Dr that doesn't listen to patients. The old one is a joke and should be dismissed.
Docs are ok, reception staff are quite unapproachable especially the new young ones. Drs usually running late - I haven't been in last year without at least 20min wait with a young restless child.
Really helpful staff, very informative and patient. The physio I saw was very professional, gave good clear advice and was able to print out a write up of our conversation there and then.
There isn't a lot of space all the Cheswick round up together you have no leg room if you have someone's chairs in front of you ask him to move but the chairs and nail down to the floor
Staff don't care if you have pain or not they'll literally tell you to deal with them lumps because everyone has them and the so called receptionists act like they run the place
Dr Kelechi is fantastic. So reassuring and thorough. I would happily wait to see him when myself or my children need an appointment at this surgery.
Still a fair wait for appointments in line with all medical practices but will triage by phone if urgent and care is given
Just had to wait for 1 hour despite having the appointment. The staff are ao kind as well as doctors.
Unfriendly receptionists, unfriendly doctors. I always feel uncomfortable there
Polite and freindly staff, always able to book an appointment.
Saw the physio and was satisfied with the treatment.
Excellent surgery with good doctors and staff.
