We walked over to The Local after a recent event at The Civic Theater. We specifically picked them because they were listed as being open longer hours than other establishments in the area and we wanted to eat. Upon walking in we noticed a sign to seat ourselves wherever we liked. We started walking toward a table before being rudely pointed over to the bar. It was apparent the waiter wasn’t interested in waiting on more tables and had already done a lot clearing of condiments from the tables. So needless to say it wasn’t exactly a positive first impression but we were hungry so we followed his pointing and found a couple of seats. Needless to say, I’m glad we did because the bartender, Kiante, was great and made up for the rude start. The only reason I’m giving 4 stars for service in this review is due to the initial waiter. Kiante would be deserving of five stars if he were to be rated by himself. He greeted us promptly and helped me pick out a drink. We ordered a Brew Pub Burger and a Grilled Romaine salad to split. The Brew Pub Burger was fantastic. It is a short rib burger cooked to perfection and loaded with all sorts of toppings and a healthy serving of crispy fries. It makes my mouth start watering just thinking about it again. We would definitely order that again….and again. The Grilled Romaine Salad left a lot to be desired. It was served with a Tzatziki dressing, tomatoes, fried chick peas and onions. The dressing was minimal and didn’t add much taste - it was bland and boring. We would not order it again which is a shame because it was plated well and sounded good when reading the menu. To drink I had Turquoise Barn Passion Peach Cider. That was also really good if you’re into hard ciders. Overall Kiante, the Brew Pub Burger and the cider saved this visit from the off-putting first impression. If I were to give management one suggestion it would be to pay attention to when there are shows at Civic Theater and plan accordingly. It turned out the waiter did end up having to take additional tables as we weren’t the only people who walked over after the show and there wasn’t nearly enough room at the bar for so many people. I’ve since read in other reviews that our experience wasn’t the only bad first impression so there’s definitely room for improvement.

Went here on a Sunday and they were regretfully short staffed, had 1/2 the seating closed off, and it was busy; however, the 1 waiter, 1 bartender, and 1 food server were hustling!!! We sat outside, around 6:30 pm, they have construction going on next door and a walk way instead of a sidewalk, lots of foot traffic and homeless who often stopped at the construction kick out with their luggage and asking walkers by for change. None stayed very long though. It was seat yourself, after about 10 minutes I went up to the bar to ask if we ordered there or at the table -bartender, she was very nice and explained the staffing issue and would send someone out shortly -about 8 minutes later he popped out. There were 3 tables that had been sitting outside, the waiter went in order from the door to the back taking drink orders (we got a spicy bloody Mary & Margarita and asked for waters on the side), then he did a round inside. Drinks came about 10 minutes later and we were able to ask him some questions. Understanably, as he was really trying to keep up with everything, he was a bit abrupt and distracted so we just ordered snack/finger food to be quick, plus we had a show to go to at 8 pm. Food was delivered to the table by a sweet gal from the kitchen about 15-ish minutes later with our waters. Buffalo Cauliflower bites, Popcorn Chicken, and fries -I think they were cheesy truffle (I didn't order them). Everything tasted good, super hot & fresh, crispy, and the chicken bits were Eve still juicy inside! Waiter popped by a few minutes after food was delivered to check that everything was good and brought a larger glass bottle for the table of water. About 15 minutes went by and we got the check and took off to our show. Parking is very limited immediately around the restaurant with meters, however there are several paided lots within a block or 2 and the Horton Plaza parking structure only a couple blocks away. I think we're going to have to give them another try for sure.

Apparently we just picked the wrong night to visit as the owner was hosting a private party and apparently we barely slipped in before the place was being shut down early. After being seated, my SO ordered a Spicy Margarita and I inquired about their beer flights (since they have an in house brewery) after being informed that only certain beers were available since many of their house beers were "can pours" only and the staff was far more preoccupied with the owner and their party's arrival than serving the patrons currently there decided to just try a single beer instead (to keep things simple) got our drinks and our appetizer and thanks to an attentive staff member who noticed we were never given table settings we even got silverware and napkins lol. After finishing our app and most of our drinks we flagged down a server to order our meal to be informed that the kitchen was closing in 10 min. We ordered, I had the Cuban Sandwich and my SO had the Diablo Shrimp Tacos. Had to ask the Owner (who was hanging at the bar with friends) for Silverware for our dinner. Only reason this review was not one star was due to the brewer and the kitchen staff. Front of house staff were severely lacking during our visit though it seemed they were distracted by the owner so...

My girlfriend and I went for Sunday brunch and were greeted with an open and bright atmosphere. There was a big sign for the "Resident Brewing Company" on the back wall. A vast beer selection is offered here, and all of the beers are broken down into their respective category from stouts, ales and to ciders. The food menu has an excellent selection of food and offers a separate brunch menu, but both lists are provided to you when seated. My girlfriend had the chicken and waffles while I had the fire birdy. The fire birdy is a spicily seasoned piece of ground chicken topped with pasilla peppers, pepper jack cheese, roasted serranos, chipotle mayo, tomato, avocado, and fried onion strings. This sandwich was ample and delicious and traditionally served with fries, but I got a side salad with ranch. The chicken and waffles was a large helping. The chicken was large. My girlfriend couldn't finish all of it. The server was attentive and responsive to all of our needs whenever we needed something. I would recommend this place to anybody looking for a good beer and some great food.

Wonderful huge space with hardworking service.. we went on a bustling Tuesday, when the fine folks at the local eatery had a "seat yourself" type of day. Service and bartender was still quick with handling all the hungry mouths and lushes of SD out on Taco Tuesday. We went before and after the Hasan Minhaj show and oh, good luck to the servers, they were moving fast and competently. We ordered wings, nachos, sausage platter, a la carte tacos (the brisket!, And the Mojo steak), Loco Moco, and quesadillas. We were a hungry table and left at the very very closing time. They are prompt to tell you about last call, and will not be afraid to let you know it's closing time. Loved the food, loved the high action evening, would go here again and recommend for great gastro-pub experience. They do have a Brewery on site, and also a fully stocked bar and a capable bartender.

This is a children friendly and Cincinnati Bengals friendly bar! In fact this is a friendly bar for any NFL fans and hopefully the same for other sports fans. The three of us went after finding excellent reviews but it wasn't clear on the website how friendly they were for children. A decent sized bar area with multiple screens and then several dining areas, with lots of screens. The confirmed game audio is confirmed by the screens. We were greeted by Amanda, who looked after us throughout the game and was awesome! There was another family in there, who our daughter enjoyed making friends with. The perfect spot to come watch your NFL team

After spending 5 and a 1/2 hours walking around the San Diego Zoo working up an appetite, I googled what was open after 9:30pm for dinner and this place came up. I was so impressed with the service and the food was spot on!! I highly recommend this place if you’re hungry for a mouth watering, Steak burger or Killer Mac N cheese. Actually, they had quite a few items on the menu that looked amazing. The music was on point too! Our server was super friendly and very knowledgeable about the menu. I think they call him Kiwi or something like that. I took lots of pics so you can check out the coolness of this place. Thanks Kiwi! Your service was greatly appreciated. We’ll definitely make it a point to come back next time we’re in town.

We had a large group luncheon (20+ people). The service and food could not have been better. Many of us had tasting flights of Resident Brews which are made on premise. Fun names and lots of varieties- one fave was ‘Walk of Shame’ a blonde with notes of coffee for the morning after ... Tuna wrap was delicious and big enough to take half home. Just needed a little soy sauce. Place was hopping with lunch crowd catching the start of March Madness We had a brewery tour which was interesting. The team (Jimmy, Craig and Mitch) were great. Nice to learn more about their operation right here in downtown and SDs place in the US Top 5 craft beer cities (ahead of LA).

  • Damien Huggard

We decided to try this place based on the reviews. We decided about 10 minutes in we made a mistake. We had the Salted Pretzel Balls as an appetizer that were more salt than pretzel. The waitress was pretty apathetic to our existence and we had our salt lick balls in front of us for 20 minutes before we ordered. The main course, Beef on a Weck (French Dip on a Salted Roll), was clearly made by the same sodium addict who made the pretzel balls. After it was over, with plates still full of uneaten food, we were clearly disappointed at the whole experience, Ms. Apathy didn't even ask or offer an apology. Entirely overrated and not worth your time or money.

  • Covey Groff

Great beer selection, great food, and great service. I sat at the bar and it was a very busy Friday afternoon lunch. Despite me taking the very last available seat at the bar, the tender was prompt, present, and courteous. I got the Resident Brewing Co, Die Gose (4.2%). It was a great sour with a very fresh summer taste. For lunch I went with the Fire Birdy sandwich. It's a chicken sandwich with hatch chilies, onion rings, and a chipotle mayo. I opted for buffalo wings sauce in lieu of the mayo and it was delicious. I would definitely eat here again! They had a swordfish feature that I hope sticks around so that I can give it a try next time.

I'm in the army and we were escorting someone nearby and decided to stop by for a late lunch. They were doing bar trivia which is one of my favorite activities. I have really bad hearing loss and was shouting the answers to my friend having a good time. Until I heard the trivia lady calling me obnoxious and telling me to be quiet very loudly over the microphone. Apparently fun is not allowed here? Idk food was fine but who the heck wants to do silent bar trivia. Instead of being talked down to because you served your country and have a hard time hearing your own voice, try somewhere you can have fun at.

An excellent downtown bar with good food, good drinks and fun staff. The beer menu is extensive and they have a good number of cocktails with a full bar. On warm days, they open the front wall to have a blender interior and exterior space. When crowded, it can take time to get drinks from the bar, but it isn't overly long. Also known as a local hangout for attorneys and staff from the public defender's office.

We stopped here before getting dinner and were not disappointed. Great beer and cocktail options. Staff was fantastic and animated. Our favorite part was the atmosphere and the fact that so many patrons stopped in before one of the last Padres games of the season. It was a ton of fun and the prices were more than fair for being a bar in the heart of the city. Would absolutely recommend and the food looked absolutely amazing.

Food was excellent and I love a spot with their full menu open late. Great beer selection heavy on local craft brews. Plenty of space and full bar. Server was nice, but there were more customers in late Friday night than they had staff for so service was a bit slow. We were happy to sit and wait. Check out the fun wallpapers in the bathrooms

First night in San Diego, wanted a quick bite and a drink after travelling for 24 hours. Bar is in central downtown district so near our hotel. Not very busy to start with, waitress did not seem happy! Took longer than it should have done to get our drinks (only 2 bar staff working) and then nachos arrined soon after, they were good. Second beer arrived much quicker. Would have given 5 stars but for the waitress! Nice place, would visit again, great beer selection.

Good beer selection, conveniently located downtown, and quick service. I went here during break from jury duty and it was quick and easy with good food. I was able to make friends with others spending their lunch at this location and it seemed like an overall friendly atmosphere with friendly people. The food I ordered (calamari) was good tasting for pub food and reasonably priced. This is a perfect location for someone looking to get a quick grub on while not being limited by the selection of beer on tap or being tapped in the back pocket.

Awesome menu, huge beer selection and plenty of space during the madness of SDCC. Definitely keep this place in mind if you want delicious food and to get off your feet. Server was on point and took great care of our party of 8. I'll be back next year. The pretzel balls and cheese and fried cheese blackened shrimp burrito were particularly tasty.

Arrived a little after 9 pm on a Saturday night. Web site says they are open till 1 am. Before I even got my first beer, the server came by at 9:20 pm and told me that their closing time was “discretionary” and that there wasn’t enough business for them to stay open, so they would be closing up soon (I am counting 30 customers in the bar right now). This is BS. Heading out to look for another place that actually wants to do business on a Saturday evening.

A friend from work had been talking The Local up for a long time and we finally made it there for a work lunch. The Resident (in house brewery, cleverly named) Gaslamp Porter was good and hits all the right flavors for a porter it just didn't have the head retention it should have. The black bean plate was very good Everything was cooked well and had great flavor. The place was packed and our bar tender/server was attentive and pleasant. I can't wait to go back or even hit it up for drinks in the evening sometime.

I’ve came here for a Packers bar and found early Christmas. Packers, ASU and Porters within walking distance! It’s like someone made a bar just for me. Service was quick and amazing. Food pressed the right buttons and the beer selection showed me the world. You’ll probably make new friends like I did. Dogs welcome, which is always cool. This is the new designated watering hole.

So, the Cuban sandwich is epic. Like the best in California. The beers... It's a hodge podge of breweries. There's a theme of just barely under done beers. Not perfect beers. The rest of the food we tried was decent but not exceptional. The calamari is a really good value. Try the lumpia if you want. The mixed drinks were really good, almost better than the beers.

My waitress was absolutely horrible. The 2 hostesses actually served me better than my waitress. My waitress did not come back once after she brought my meal, to see if everything was ok. I was not rude or ignorant in any way to her, for her to not come and see how my meal was. The food was ok for what I had. I would never ever go there again to eat. If you wanted to get drunk at this place with the waitress that I had. It will not happen, she never comes back to ask if I needed another beer.

We were invited in to have a seat where ever. Once seated no one came to ask for our drinks our take our order in 5-10 minutes. Mind you there were 3 servers and there were only about 3 tables being served in entire place. The servers spent their talking about their outfits and primping. I caught them looking at our table but no one came to assist us. We were not sure what was going on, so we left. The staff was unprofessional and the service was none existent. Avoid this place!

  • Bo Presley

Food and service was definitely above and beyond for the price. The only reason I gave them 4/5 stars in atmosphere is because of all the obnoxious Green Bay fans there. It's a Green Bay bar in downtown SD... smh. Oh well, management is doing everything else right. I recommend this place.

Food and drinks are great. Service was good. Only issue was that by the time we were finishing up the hispanic bartender and the blonde waitress removed their masks while they were still serving food and drinks while walking about the restaurant. I found that disgusting as we're still under mask mandates here. Thankfully I was leaving and my waiter kept his on the entire time.

Inside the local is a great brewery, Resident Brewing. The beer selection is great beyond just their beers, and I really like the atmosphere. I went with a group of friends and it has a very laid back vibe, you can actually hang out and talk. The music selection was fine, and loud enough to hear but not club level loud. The bartenders and bouncers were also friendly. I always enjoy myself when I go here.

We stopped in before a show on Sunday noon because it was just 2 blocks away. We were pleasantly surprised with the food and beer quality! Pretzel balls and basket of tots were great finger food to munch on with a beer. We ordered food from the brunch and regular menu. The food were huge portion and delicious. We will definitely go back again when we are going the shows again at the civic theater.

  • Robb Ashton

Resident Brewing Co. is the best part about The Local. They make fantastic beer. The bar service leaves a little something to be desired, but it's more of a quantity issue over quality. They get busy quickly, they always have, and for the size of the bar, they seem understaffed. The food is pretty good, as is the old school wrestling imagery in the bathroom. Resident makes this a quality spot.

  • Vicky C

Service was okay, the place was very busy when we went. We had to wait a long time to take our order and then again to pay after we ate. I got the rosemary chicken mac & cheese without the bacon. The mac & cheese hit the spot, but the chicken was a little bit too dry for me. Overall the food and service was average.

Food was okay and drinks were good. However, if you are into ANY soccer…just know they refuse to play it AND they don’t have WiFi to stream it from your own device. The music is so loud at 6:30 PM….it is more like a club…not a sports bar. We couldn’t even hear each other at the table. Wouldn’t even play the USMNT on one TV. Disappointed.

American food and craft beer. Good selection of food and drink. Also seems to be of decent quality. Service was ok for a bar. The bad: If your not from the area, this place is expensive for what you get. Fries with your burger is an upcharge, something I've never seen as a local guide. Also an old fashioned is $13 which is double the most I've ever paid for one. All in all not too bad.

Good food, solid beer list. Can never complain about having Pliny the Elder on tap. Connected to resident brewing company in a shared bar space with garage sliding doors that open up to let a cool breeze flow in when the weather is nice....which is a lot in San Diego Good place to watch games too with multiple big screens spread across the bar and brewery space.

Delicious brunch! We go here to watch the Packers games on Sundays. To be honest, it was more fun last year when it was community seating. This year they made everyone wait to be seated and it made for a less friendly environment. I hope they go back to community seating so everyone can relax and talk to strangers while cheering on the Packers. Go Pack Go!

All the food we ordered was delicious! Lots of great local brews available. We went two nights in a row and had good service both times. The management is pretty abrasive about wanting to turn tables quick, but we know restaurants are doing what they can to stay open these days. A good place to watch sports and UFC (if you come early and pay the cover).

  • Cameron Campbell

Great food and beer. This place has a huge variety of local beers including their own in house beer. At least five different house IPAs. Had a chance to try three and all were unique and delishous. If you want something different try the vacation IPA and look out for the strong citrus and coconut flavours. Food is good gastro pub style and priced well.

Great venue with lots of TV's. Their service is good but I have yet to show up on an extremely busy night. It might be my luck or they might still be somewhat low key. The food is great and they have a good variety of options, from bar food to great restaurant quality entrées! Solid drink options with great selection of beers on tap …

Excellent modern up beat bar and restaurant. It’s 7:30pm and currently there’s a DJ on staff. My popcorn chicken came out fast and extremely easy to eat while drinking. One bit of advice, I’d recommend taking an Uber here. There’s a large homeless village on the other side of the street. Please feels super safe and staff is on top of everything.

Attended on a tuesday, not slammed. I would consider this more of a brah bar. Food was decent but the rosemary chicken mac and cheese wasnt anything to write home about. Street fries have more flavor, they come with jalapeno so be prepared. Beer selection was adequate for a watering hole. Overall id come here with friends rather than co-workers.

Good French toast, poor service and horrible atmosphere with loud vulgar music during brunch. Good food but will not return.

Spacious and airy, good food to go with the fresh brews including their own as well as a curated selection of local favorites. TVs are placed high for visibility in case one wants to catch the current sporting events. Reliably good, with central location near but not inside the Gaslamp, so maybe not as crowded as some of those places.

We absolutely LOVED this place. We are visiting from Michigan and my husband loves craft beer. So we found this small piece of heaven! Victoria was our server she’s absolutely delightful! She knows her beers which is very impressive. The lobster taco and Vietnamese salad bowls are great! I’d come back again for the AMAZING service.

  • Michael Nelson

Much better after the renovation. More spa e and more light. I love the references to SD movie history on the walls and a WWF tribute in the men's restroom. The food and beer selection is good, but the service brought down the rating to 4 stars. Our server was friendly but forgot to put in an order then got a second order wrong.

  • Becky Rhone-Nowlan

The local is a great local place to have a drink or a meal. Generally their food is a little bit on the spicy side but is really tasty. The management is taking the current situation very seriously and make sure their patrons are safe. If you are looking for a place to watch sports... This is the best place. Come check them out.

Great downtown place! Service eas excellent - Angel was a fantastic waitress. Food was really good. Great beer selection too. The music was a little loud for a weekday lunchtime but it was fun 80s.

I went here on Sat the 6th of Aug. Great place. They had a poke bowl with fresh blue fun that was outstanding. Nice summer day so I ordered their vacation IPA which has hints of coconut and pineapple. Like a sculpting but with the IPA catch. Great beer. Great food. Super nice wait staff. Really enjoyed it. Worth a visit.

Food was good, got the Cuban sandwich. The service was terrible, from the front door person not being present when I entered to the bartender being annoyed I only wanted food and a water.

Big fan of the Local. Frequent them for lunch and love it. Wings, sandwiches, burritos, tacos, it's all good. The staff is very friendly as well! We went here for the ASU opener and had great service from Rachel. She was tentative to our needs and brought our drinks and food quickly! I will definitely be going back.

  • Dan Bonano

Wow! This place has really changed over the years. Really great atmosphere for families or groups of friends. Lot's of TVs for watching sports. Great selection of local beers and the food is fantastic. Try the buffalo cauliflower. Very friendly staff and great location right in the middle of everything downtown.

We had a large party for dinner on a Saturday night. The service was great and the food was really good. All the orders came out correct and relatively quickly given the hour. They made us feel extra special too, as we celebrated a birthday milestone.

Stopped by for a quick drink on our way to the theater. Asked for. Jagarbomb ... Out of Jagar!! How?? Lol . So got a "lemon drop" martini. He didn't put sugar on the rim and no lemon garnish. The flavor was just alright...could've been much better for the price.

Checked out this place last night and OMG...best service hands-down by Jenna the bartender, along with the BEST wings I have had in a long time.. maybe ever!! The fries are super tasty as well. The Resident seltzer and coconut IPA were very refreshing! This is my new favorite downtown spot!

Every time I've been here has been a great experience. The poutine with brisket was delicious and the beer flight was a lot of fun. Our waitress was very helpful, attentive and fun. Notably, the women's bathroom was really bright and fun (can't attest to the men's lol) …

Great food and friendly staff. The menu is not huge, but it offers a wide variety, from Ban Mi to blackened shrimp burritos. Of course it has a huge selection of micros. They could be a good little colder though. I went for happy hour and for lunch during my visit.

Came here for late night food. The staff was very friendly and food came out quick. Restaurant is open until 11 but kitchen closes at 10. We enjoyed the nachos, the portion size was big and lots of meat! We also ordered the burger and burrito which were both good.

Sports bar w passable food. It's a packers bar on Sundays. My team's game was on one TV. Foid was good, great attentive service. Great place to take in a game. Odd, to me, dogs were allowed inside the bar during the whole game, not service dogs. Yuk.

Was downtown San Diego on business Me & my bus riding dog decided to eat something. Walked + came upon this craft beer & foodie. Had outside seating too. Beautiful day for a Blood Orange IPA & BLT BEER WAS GOOD. FOOD WAS OK FOR PRICE. NICE SERVERS.

We are locals , born and raised in San Diego. A situation occurred on Friday and was not handled appropriately. The bouncers were disrespectful and rude. Nothing was done to resolve the situation. Would not go back here especially being a local.
