tl:dr- brought in a ’95 Previa to these guys that wouldn’t start and they tried to get us to spend ~$1,000. Realizing they were untrustworthy we bought a fuel filter for $17.99, replaced it, and the van runs great. Let me preface this by saying that I have never written a negative review about any company and don’t go out of my way to do anything to negatively impact small businesses. However, I would like to use my experience at TNA as a warning to potential customers who are looking for an honest mechanic. These folks are pretty shady. My dad moved recently and gave a 1995 Toyota Previa to my partner and me. We drove it from San Francisco up to Portland in it seamlessly at the end of November. We were traveling for the month of December and left it in the driveway, when we got back, it didn’t start. We tried to jump it, nothing, so we got it towed to TNA to see if they could get it started up. They called us back the following day and informed us that it needed a throttle body clean, a temperature sensor, fuel filter, and the fuel injectors cleaned, “essentially a tune-up,” and then told us that it would be $969. $969! We talked about it and my partner called them back the next day and asked them if they could address the specific problem just to get it running and we could maybe do the rest later, a grand for a twenty year old van didn’t seem like a realistic price. They countered by saying that it was “sort of a mix of everything” but that if they avoided the throttle body clean the cost would be down to $728. $728! My partner said we would have to get it towed home at that price because was probably technically a total. Get this, the mechanic responded by saying, “No, I checked, and these are going for around $3,000.” Why was the mechanic checking the price of the car before giving us a quote for labor? In any case, we decided to get it towed back home and then the mechanic offered us one last sweet deal, saying that we could likely do a good amount of the repairs over the next six months to year and that we should actually only have to get the fuel filter and temperature sensor replaced, and throttle body cleaned in order to get it started. They let us know that this was a service that they would gladly provide for only $379. $379! At this point, through the knowledge that our support system has of cars, we were informed that a fuel filter might have been screwed up leaving the van for so long with relatively little fuel in the tank. We were also very sick of the inane numbers being given to us by TNA. We got the van towed home and my partner bought a fuel filter at O’Reilly’s for $17.99 and changed it out on Saturday morning. The van started fine and runs like a top.
They screwed up an oil change twice. I went in for just an oil change, and they way, way overfilled the oil to a dangerous level. I did not check the oil level before I left as I trusted them to be able to handle an oil change (NOTE TO SELF & EVERYONE: Always check your oil level after an oil change before leaving anywhere). So I went back and they agreed that the oil level was too high and drained the oil. Again I trusted them to handle that, but when I got back the oil level was way below low, so I had to go out and put in a full quart. That’s the short version. The slightly longer version was that for some reason my [CHECK ENGINE] light turned on after I had the oil change, and then I checked the oil and saw that the oil was way overfilled by at least a quart. So when I went back for the oil drain I asked them about the [CHECK ENGINE] light. A mechanic hooked up a diagnostic device to my car, and said that he was not getting a reading, and there must be some short of short in my car’s system that would need to be fixed. I then went and sat in the waiting room. Another mechanic came out, and I guess he thought that I had overfilled the oil, and he told me that the oil was at a dangerous level that could cause serious damage to the engine, and it was good that I was having it drained. I asked him what he thought about the diagnostic device not working, and what I would need to have done to my car to fix the “electrical short”. He told me that the diagnostic device the other mechanic used doesn’t work half the time, so he used one that worked. Although the second mechanic was friendly and helpful, and the first one was less so, yet even though he was friendly and bother to use diagnostic device that worked he the over drained my car by a quart, and didn’t bother to check. I’m not exaggerating or being picky- these guys badly screwed up an oil change twice, and did not bother to check either time. I am glad the [CHECK ENGINE] light turned on because I could have destroyed my car’s engine had I just assumed that the oil had been changed correctly. There are a lot of bad reviews of TNA and I feel they are warranted. I had gotten to the point where I did not trust them with anything major, and after they botched an oil change twice I won’t be back. A lazy mechanic doing sloppy work can cause serious damage to your car. Also they charge $29 for the oil change, and don’t bother to check fluid levels or do anything else. This was a minor incident- checkout the other reviews for people who have had major problems.
(2015 Nissan Versa Note SV: Transmission repair, engine mount replacement, battery replacement) $6,800. _____________________________ I came in with, well, let's just quote service repair advisor Frank when he said, "a perfect whirlwind of problems." My family and I were driving out to Tygh Valley, Oregon from Portland when my car started having trouble accelerating while going up a rather steep incline. Any time I'd exceed 2 - 3k RPM on the tachometer, the car would hesitate, shudder and continuously rev the engine. We luckily made it back home, albeit on cruise control the entire way and I had a feeling it was the transmission but was hoping for the best. To make things worse, the battery started dying on me while I was calling around places to get a repair done. I contact TNA Auto Repair, schedule an appointment for an inspection and was notified by Frank that there was quite some work to be done. To start, the battery was in fact pretty dead and needed to be replaced. However, Frank also notified me that the engine mounts were bad and needed to be replaced which is part of what caused the car to shake when accelerating prior to the incident--the engine was literally moving all over the place and wasn't secured properly. To make things worse, Frank also let me know that, to my dismay, the transmission was shot. This was awful, school was starting in just a week and my partner and I had to share a car when she too also had to go to work (I work from home, but figuring out pick-up was a nightmare). Stressed with the financial burden of a new transmission and other repair costs, I decided to proceed and have it done. Frank assured me they'd get it taken care of as quick as possible and gave an estimate and they made sure to meet the deadline. When calling to check on the repair time, I spoke with the owner Tareq, who, extremely helpful, notified me that he could get me a loaner car to use in the mean time and to stop by. This helped so much with figuring out a car situation as I'd never had such a large repair done before, and this meant I could get the kids to and from school. Once the car was finished, paid for and picked up, not only was the repair done on time--the car has worked the best it ever has--and they detailed it for me as well, no additional charge. I will absolutely be coming back to TNA for any car repairs. Thanks so much!
I’m not one to write negative reviews but I had a terrible enough of an experience I feel I need to share. I was in this shop 5 different times for my Subaru that was leaking water under the glove compartment on the passenger side. It still isn’t fixed. They had the car for 20 days on and off from mid-January thru the end of March and charged us a total of $1,100. These charges were on visit 1 ($700) and visit 3 ($400) and you would think they wouldn’t charge a second time unless they were absolutely sure the problem was fixed. I felt this shop got tired of us repeatedly coming in but the issue was never fixed so we kept coming back hoping that our money wouldn’t go to waste. I don’t feel like they tried everything they could have and it eventually felt like they de-prioritized my car because they knew we weren’t paying them anymore then we already did. After we confirmed the problem was still not solved on the 5th try (10 round trips to drop off and pick up the car on weekdays, 20 days total of the car sitting in their shop, and this was spanned across 3 months of back and forth) we called asking for at least a partial refund because they clearly were not able to find the solution. Of course they weren’t willing to refund anything, not even the $400 additional they charged us on our third visit of trying to get this solved. I am now taking my car to a different shop, restarting the process and having to bite the bullet on the $1,100 already paid. This whole process has been extremely frustrating and wasted a lot of time for everyone involved.
This place is a total rip off. I took my car in for an oil change and asked them to check out an issue with a sound I was hearing from the back tire area. After looking at the car, Frank calls and says there is a drive belt problem, and that I needed a new axle, a new battery, a new air filter and that my window washer nozzles needed repairing. The total would be over $2,200. I didn't feel right about it so I just asked them to change the oil and thought I would get a 2nd opinion from a trusted mechanic I used in CA for decades. TNA charged me $279 for the oil change, including $75 to look a the "noise" and $75 to look at the window washer nozzles. Really? $75 to look at window washer nozzles that I had already told them were clogged? Anyway, I took the car to my mechanic who said I had no drive belt problem and he fixed the window washer nozzle for free. TNA wanted to charge $500 plus to fix the nozzles. Frank told me the drive belt needed immediate attention as it was unsafe and could cause serious engine damage. This was totally untrue and I worried the whole time I drove to CA. In the end I payed $741 to fix the problems TNA was trying to charge $2,200. Give me a break. How friggin' uncool and unethical is this? Beware. You have been warned.
TNA Auto repair was strongly recommended to me by a neighbor several years ago. I've been coming here ever since. The mechanics are thorough, patient, and fair and are willing to explain in detail what is going on with your vehicle. Frank and Tarak are both very friendly and I've never been to a shop where my car comes back with more things fixed than I had brought it in for! This has happened two times here: once bringing it in for a repair to the evap system and when they returned it my cruise control which hadn't worked in years was functioning. The other time I brought it in, it was for a new alternator. I'd been having trouble with the speakers cutting out and when the car was returned to me they worked perfectly again. I'd never mentioned anything about these issues to the mechanics! Very pleased with this shop!!
This was one of the best car maintenance/work experiences that I've had since moving to Oregon. I took my Subaru WRX here after getting it looked at at a different shop. I'm so glad I got a second opinion. TNA is the best! Frank was so helpful in working with the warranty company and getting things taken care of for me. It was nice to feel like I wasn't being taken advantage of and to be talked to like a human being. Tareq even took me back into the shop (cleanest I've ever seen) and showed me what was fixed and replaced so I knew. They were so easy to work with and did such an amazing job. My car runs like a dream. I will definitely be taking my Subie here going forward and will definitely be recommending these guys to everyone I know. Thanks TNA for being so amazingly awesome to a lady in need!
I took my car there and they took 2 hours to do diagnostics. They did call and get my permission for the second hour. They wrote up an estimate and I had a mechanic from another shop review it and they said TNA was overcharging for the parts. I decided to take it to another shop. When that shop checked it out they said it didn't even need the coils that TNA was going to replace. They were honest that the car is on it's last legs. I feel a little duped by TNA :( I will say they were prompt and communicative about getting to my car, communicating with me, emailing me the estimate. But I won't be going back here.
TNA is the cleanest auto repair shop you'll ever set foot in. The garage area is as clean as the front office, and that speaks volumes about their attention to detail and their care for the work environment. It also makes it easy and safe to take customers into the work area to explain aspects of the repair work. My brake job took longer than they anticipated—the estimated completion time changed twice—but my car was cleaned inside and out when I picked it up, which was a lovely touch. And it seems they adjusted the tension on my parking brake at no extra charge. I highly recommend TNA Auto Repair.
These guys are liars. They charged me $838 to change sparks plugs, a distributor cap and put in a rebuilt alternator. I was in a drive thru 15 minutes after leaving their shop when the alternator went out and left me totally blocking the drive-thru. The alternator actually hadn't even been changed but charged up enough to drive and break down again. The alternator was the reason I brought my car to them in the first place but they were eager to do unnecessary things to my car and not actually fix what was wrong. I would NOT recommend this shop at all.
The best customer service ever. I have been going to this shop since 2010 and it's been the great shop and honest people and trusty too. I always bring my 96 Subaru to TNA shop and they did a great job on it, they did the engine and transmission work on my Subaru and they did very good job and my car is running really nice, smooth and safety. Always they told me what my car need to be done on time. And the good thing too they call you before doing anything on your car and the price. Big thanks to Tareq and all his staff thank you very much.
My family has had I have had two great experiences at TNA auto. I have greatly appreciated their service. Reasonable appointments available. Good communication during appointment. I had them fix a reoccurring issue and it was good for about a month and then it started happening again. It was not the part they had services but they fixed it free of charge since it was three times fixing it. I really appreciated it after having so many frustrations with my vehicle. I look forward to having my vehicle serviced here again.
Tareeq is an absolutely LOVELY human being and he and the other folks there provide great service at a great value. This business is fantastic at keeping older cars on the road without trying to upsell you and they’re great about checking in every step of the way before completing repairs. Also appreciate that their time estimates are usually really accurate because I have a disability so it’s super inconvenient when I can’t plan around my vehicle being ready. LOVE these folks. Highly recommended!
I am a long-time customer. Tareq has been helpful, knowledgeable, service-oriented and honest to a fault. He has refused my money on numerous occasions when he has helped me, despite my insistence on paying. I have taken my car to him in urgent and routine situations and have been very happy with the service he provides. My car runs beautifully. He provides me with clear and helpful explanations. He is unfailingly kind and gentlemanly. I am so grateful that I discovered him.
Took my car in because it was a convenient location. Was told I had to replace my tie rods and was quoted 1600 plus dollars to fix this and other problems. Took my car to an honest mechanic and they found a bulge in my tire that was causing the knocking. TNA charged me 108 dollars to lie to me (also they misspelled the word "tire" on their report) and the other place charged me 50 dollars and my car was fixed the next day. Never again. Ever.
We took our Subaru here, knowing they specialized in them, and we had a weird clunk sound emanating from the rear end. The technician easily diagnosed the problem, showed and explained the issue clearly, and we had our car fixed within a few days. They even washed it for us. I felt they took care in ensuring we knew what the issue was and their fix for it. We appreciate the communication, and we will be back. Thanks for the great service.
I have taken both my truck and car to TNA and will continue to do so because they not only save me money and time (got both vehicles back the same day I dropped each off) Tareeq and Frank took the time to explain exactly what repairs were done. I had unpleasant experiences with both ford and nissan dealership repair shops in the past that cost me a lot of money and was extremely thankful that I came to TNA.
These guys are great and provide a good experience from start to finish. Mo solved an issue with my 2015 Corvette that had a previous shop stumped and got it fixed and ready to go in no time. It says a lot that the shop is also immaculate inside, these guys take pride in their work and get the job done right! Highly recommend TNA to anyone needing work done on their car and will refer my friends over.
I had the serpentine drive belts replaced on my 1997 Toyota Tacoma at TNA Automotive. The owner was very respectful, did prompt, effective, and fair priced work ($10 less then my other 3 bids). They staff even stayed late to make sure that my Truck was up and running before work the following morning. If you need a good Mechanic in NE Portland, these guys do a great job at a great price.
These guys are straight up. I was on a long road trip from New York and they took care of some concerns I had with my car quickly and efficiently. They could have very easily taken advantage of me but they didn’t and charged a very fair price for the repairs that were necessary. The shop and even the bathroom were very clean which I thought was very professional. Top notch pros.
I recommend all my friends and family to avail themselves of TNA Auto Repair. Tareq loves cars. Look at the photos of how clean his shop is. In my experience Tareq is honest and honorable. The folks he hires all seem to reflect his character. Try him out. My brother has been with Tareq for ten years. I have been assisted by TNA for four years.
Superb customer service, ethical practices and trustworthiness are qualities that used to be the standard, but, sadly, they are the exception. That's why when I happen upon a treasure like TNA Auto....I celebrate my great good fortune. They ARE EXCEPTIONAL! I trust their expertise and that I'll be treated with respect. Who could ask for more??
I've been loyal to TNA for over 10 years. They do great work, have competent technicians, and a great business owner in Tareq. He started this business on the best formula for retaining customers - making sound evaluations and getting the work completed accurately and on time. I wouldn't willingly take my car to any other shop in Portland.
They did simple work but charged totally unreasonable. They just cleaned throat body, which cost me $480. I trusted them at the beginning, so I just left my car there. Then they told me they cleaned twice, which I would not know. They just cleaned the throat body and charged me ridiculous price. To sum up, choose someone else.
I will commence the restoration project of my Mother's Kia Sedona with the Engine first. I look forward to establishing a longterm customer & mechanic relationship as, I restore the Sedona to showroon condition. I will see TNA the week of 02/27/2020. Pictures to be posted next week so, stay tuned.
The Best!! The crew at TNA are lifesavers. Like a dummy I hit a curb pulling out of a parking spot. Which caused front bumper lower plate to be torn off. I was able to swing into TNA on my way home, and they were able to repair my front end and change my oil in a half an hour! Thank you so much!
Tariq, the owner a really good man. Honest, and will listen. Huge in today's world. Great service, very knowledgeable. Runs a really Clean shop, in more ways than one. I have recommended his shop to family and friends and he works on my two Subarus, regularly. I won't go anywhere else.
Overall, TNA is a solid shop for your everyday l, or more complex car needs. They’ve revived three different vehicles for me including one replacement of a timing belt awhile back. Everyone at TNA seems to have pretty good experience as well as knowledge. Cheers to TNA!
Frank and Tareq have been super diligent in getting to the root of issues resulting from a catalytic converter theft. It's great to have that little light off permanently!! As is always the case, TNA does a great job. I appreciate all that they do!
Their rates may not have been the cheapest but were certainly less than dealership quotes. My repair was done quickly and correctly. When I picked my car up they had detail cleaned both interior and exterior at no charge. that was a nice surprise.
These guys diagnosed my car's problem and fixed it affordably when other mechanics offered me much more expensive solutions. I've enjoyed working with the people there and they have become my de facto mechanics. Thank you Frank!
Professional courteous friendly's service. I didn't shop around for my brake job so I ended up paying a little bit more, quite a bit more than Les Schwab would it charge me I found out later. But my brakes work great
I had the great pleasure of having my car break down in front of this shop. The staff were incredibly accommodating and kept me informed at all points during my repair. 10/10 would break down here again …
I WOULD LIKE TO SAY THANKS TO ALL THE GUYS AT TNA AUTO REPAIR AND ESPECIALLY TONY FOR BEING SO NICE AND HELPFUL WITH MY ESCALADE's FLAT TIRE THIS MORNING. THIS IS MY NEW AUTO SHOP THANKS AGAIN!!! ANGELA
They charged me over $1500 to fix a oil leak and they made the issue worse. After It still leaks and I'll take the loss but I'd NEVER trust them with my car again. Be prepared to get ripped off.
I don't know what happened here the last few years, I used to recommend them but they never return calls nor answer so I can't even make an appointment. Not sure if they changed ownership.
I hate getting my car fixed. It sucks. But these guys have always been pretty straight forward and their prices are fair. I'd go out of my way to keep them as my mechanic.
Very nice and honest staff, did more work than I was charged for. I had the best experience I've ever had getting my car fixed! I highly recommend these guys!!
Best mechanic in Portland, they have worked on 3 of my cars and there all perfect, could not be happier with their customer service, overall satisfaction A++.
Knowledgeable people, honest and grate customer Service I took both of my cars over there for Service and repair . I will go visit TNA next month for check.
I am happy with the Auto repairs done on SUV...these were repairs required to keep my vehicle running well and safe...Thanks to TNA manager and technicians.
Always great service. I feel like I am getting honest and fare car prognosis and pricing. Very communicative. Would highly recommend this place.
Those folks are SO DOWN HOME TYPE PEOPLE!!!! If you tell in the area and happen to find yourself needing a automotive repair shop, get there.
Been taking my '98 Tacoma here for 3 years now and have always had a good experience with these guys. Honest, friendly, consistent service.
The best people. They know how to great, treat and serve their customer. And, they there job real well. Thanks to Mr. Tareq and his team.
Really humble and honest hard working people here. Had a great experience getting help with some fluid changes. :)
Straight shooters, quick service. Helped me get my ‘85 Olds roadworthy again. Will use them for everything.
I have been going here for over 20 years and have always been pleased with the quality of their service!!
This place is great! Very generous and know what they’re doing. Highly recommended.
