More Than Just Moos and Howls at the Fort Worth Stockyards Museum! If you're looking for a dose of Texan history served up with a side of belly laughs, then mosey on down to the Fort Worth Stockyards Museum! This place is teeming with rich history, captivating exhibits, and a staff that's friendlier than a prairie dog in springtime. The exhibits? Top-tier. Learned about Texas history like a cowboy straight outta school - which, given my track record in high school history, is a feat in itself. Who knew cattle drives and trade posts could be such a hoot? But the real highlight? That award goes to Maurie, the resident museum dog. Never did I think I'd be schooled in history by a four-legged curator. Maurie, an expert in Texas lore and probably the world's greatest hide-and-seek player, leads visitors on a one-of-a-kind museum tour. All this while nailing the perfect mix of charm and dogged determination! (Pun definitely intended.) Maurie's more than just a pup with a job, though. He's the heart of the museum - a canine ambassador of Texan culture if you will. Maurie was as keen on giving us the inside scoop on Fort Worth history as he was on fetching his favorite toy. His endearing antics turned an ordinary museum visit into a memorable day full of chuckles and unforgettable insights. So whether you're a cowboy at heart, a history buff, or just someone looking for a tail-waggingly good time, the Fort Worth Stockyards Museum is the place to be. And trust me, Maurie will be just as excited to see you as you are to see him. Yeehaw!

The Stockyards Museum is a fundamental yet humble little piece of Fort Worth's heritage bringing visitors from around the world for over 30 years. It's volunteer run and staffed so all this rich, cowtown history can be brought to its visitors free of charge (they have a donation box). From the lightbulb that's been burning since 1908 and pieces belonging to famous gunslinging outlaws to the chilling, cursed wedding dress, and authentic handcrafted Native American Chief headdresses, to countless other cowtown artifacts that take you back to the fast-lane of the ol' west's cattle industry, the museum and its dedicated volunteers give Fort Worth, TX its heartbeat which brings the city alive. Thank you Charlie & Sue McCafferty (Ma & Poppy) for this sacred gift - preserving this legendary history that's rich within these Stockyards and that would have otherwise been plowed over, made into another shopping area and completely forgotten.

This is a cute little museum. It costs $2 to get in (12 and under are free) and you will probably spend about twenty minutes inside depending on how much you read everything but it is worth the $2. The volunteers are kind, lovely ladies that will greet you as you enter. I was remiss and did not take any pictures. There are a variety of saddles and old guns. Of course lots of information about the stockyards. A story of a bad luck wedding dress that seemed to curse every generation that put it on (and yet they kept wearing it). And the most interesting thing of all, the second longest running lightbulb in the world! 112 years! Wow! They certainly do not make them like that anymore. That alone is worth the $2!

We watched the bulls at 11:30 and 4! Such history! Loved it! Will go back! Parked in the parking lot at the 100 block of Stockyard Blvd. Walked down the alley and the waited by Avoca coffee shop. They had good coffee too! The 4 o'clock was after lunch in Risckys BBQ the Stockyards alley where the rail way goes through the old cattle trading area. The shops are very cool to explore! Make sure you look! There's YouTube videos we watched first. We did the John Wayne museum($23.50/pp), the Stockyards museum too($2/pp) there's also a long horn you can get your picture with, in saddle, for $5!

Small and cosy museum filled with lots of interesting memorabilia, from possessions of early immigrants and cowboy accessories to railway maps and high school photographs. I walked around the museum a few times and I always found something surprising every round. If you have time, I recommend you to sit down and watch the "Wall Street of the West" video at the back of the museum. It is interesting to see how Fort Worth thrived and grew when the rest of the USA was in depression during the 1930s. After visiting the museum, go to the back of the building to see the historical cattle-pens. If the staircase at the cattle-pen is open, climb up to get a good view of the stockyards and downtown Fort Worth.

I don't know where all of the 5* reviews are coming from, but mine certainly isn't one of them. This place looks like it was created in the 1960s, and hasn't been updated since then. Although the admission is only $2, this is a small museum, and is very cluttered with artifacts from the Ft. Worth Stockyards. The biggest problem is that everything appears to have been randomly placed, like you'd find in someone's attic. While many of the exhibits are interesting, there's no sense of time, or of chronological order. Given the importance of the Ft. Worth Stockyards to the City, you'd think that someone would realize that you need to raise some $ to really update this museum.

Best place to see the Nativity of Dallas . Cowboy lifestyle and stuff can be seen here . My uber driver suggested this on my trip to dallas and definitely a must visit place . Seeing the bull fights and riding a bull is unique experience . Prebook to the show is suggestible as there will be lot of people in the weekends . Beer and steak is damn good in almost all the restaurants and the museum is also highlighted with fortworth origins . For parking go all the way to the end of street and free parking is available even at busy times .

The stockyards are great! You'll want to bring cash and you do have to pay to park (cash or credit) but there is plenty to see and do. We stopped by the museum and they offered my kids a scavenger hunt for a free prize! The kids not only learned about a lot of Texas history but they also got some great souvenirs to take home. The cattle run happens twice a day and there are plenty of restaurants to watch from. You can grab lunch and see the longhorns walk through. They also did a "shoot out" a few times we were there, kids and parents alike enjoyed it. They offer a petting zoo, maze and a few other attractions as well. Great for families!

  • Peter Levy

The staff is cheerful, and the exhibits are interesting. It's nice and cool on a hot day, and the museum is self-guided. The museum is chock-full of memorabilia, and it can be a little crowded (by post-COVID standards). My visit included a serenade by one of the people. All three were polite, helpful, and very knowledgeable. I had a great time and look forward to returning to this delightful museum, located smack in the middle of the Stockyards! You won't forget it! Veteran-friendly, too.

Fun place to visit for the entire family. So much history about the cattle selling days of old and the meat packing originated here back in the early 1900’s! The museum is tiny but packs a punch with memorabilia! See pictures and stories of the real cow girls too! Learn about the key roles Swift and Armour played in shaping the meat packing business too. Also some American Indian influences around the same time in the stockyards area.

Great place to learn about the history of Texas's cattle-raising. Really helpful and friendly staff eager to help explain things. The museum itself is more like a one-room gift shop, but there are good exhibits of vintage equipment from the city's days as a meatpacking capital. Behind the building are actual stockyards where you see see longhorn cattle, mostly steers. The building itself still houses offices and some cattle-auctions are based there, though much of the trading is online instead of in-person.

  • Leah Hawkins

Unexpected jewel in the Fort Worth historic Stockyards area. Located in the historic Livestock Exchange Building, it has numerous interesting artifacts - do the scavenger hunt! Also has a small gift shop with Fort Worth and Texana gifts - including jellies and salsas. Operated by volunteers, the sales and the small entrance fee of $2.00 support the efforts of the North Fort Worth Historic Society whose mission includes keeping the history of the stockyards alive.

  • Jacob Lalkens

Excellent museum about the Fort Worth Stockyards! I had a very very nice talk with the older lady that was working there. She remembered the glory days and showed me the old photo of the stockyards. Her German mother’s last name originated from the province in The Netherlands I am from, Groningen. We had a nice conversation in German

  • Avery Kurzontkowski

Pretty cool. Paid $2 to get in so it was not a financial strain. Only spent about 7 minutes inside, not a ton to see. If you like history it’s cool. I wouldn’t make a point of going to see it while you’re here in the Stockyards, but it’s a good stop on your way to look at the cows.

When we visited, not much to show. A lot of empty room. After the 4pm rally, we didn't go inside the museum bc they closed at 5pm. Seeing from outside windows, museum is not too big. However, we did see a lot of longhorns from outside barn that is free to visit.

It's nice to smell cattle droppings. $5 for pictures on top of longhorns and $2 for petting zoo where we can pet goats, and $7 for small horse riding if your weight is less than 100 lbs. Many stores with a lot of products made in China. We enjoyed the march with longhorn cattle, cow boys and cow girls at 4:00 p.m. Food is ok worth the experience.

  • Diana Topel

The entrance to the Stockyards Museum is only 2 dollars, which is a great value considering that even though it's small it has a ton of interesting artifacts and information from the old days. We enjoyed our visit. The man at the cashiers was very pleasant. He was joking with my daughter about toys from the past and she thought he was very nice.

  • j c

This was a good stop on our trip through Texas. Was not crowded (due to rodeo and stock show downtown Fort Worth). Museum was great and everyone working there was very friendly. This is definitely a tourist trap, but worth the stop if you have time. Only reason not 5 stars alot of construction in the area had many attractions closed.

  • Niloy Chatterjee

It’s a hidden gem in the DFW area. I barely hear people suggesting about this place . It has so much history in there. This time I couldn’t see the bill fighting as I went during the day. Next in plan is to go on a Saturday and see the bill fighting. The markets are also worth visiting with so many food places and souvenir shops.

  • Guillermo Vazquez

The museum is very small, but does contain a lot of historical items on display; I would have liked it if the displays had more information. The museum does do a good job at showing the history of The Stockyards. I would recommend you visit the museum (only takes about an hour to go through).

  • Nancy Cothrum

Stockyard Museum is a great place to tour and learn the history of "Where the West Begins". Make sure you see the Palace Theatre Light Bulb that is 107+ years old, the Bad Luck Wedding Dress and find out many things on how the Stockyards was a bustling location for livestock auctions.

  • Stephen Brown

Nice small museum and gift shop in a very large building by the stock yards. Some interesting items and history about the area as well as a 109 year old light bulb that is still burning and the "bad luck wedding dress ". Definitely worth your time to stop by for a few minutes.

  • Fuzzy Camero

Absolutely historical landscape to understand Dallas TX if you are in the field of agriculture. You can check out the artifacts, different agricultural processes and tools used in dallas. It's really packed with interesting kids-fun and historical artifacts. #dallas #history

This was a unique place to visit, and the admission price was a bargain! We enjoyed seeing the 112 year old lightbulb, and the bad luck dress story was captivating! Everything was well-preserved, and this was an excellent addition to our visit to Fort Worth!

  • Nathan Shobe

Great stop for visitors and locals alike. The museum is small with little story to be told, which makes it more like a collection of antiques rather than a museum, but the staff are genuinely helpful and willing to share story to bring the antiques to life.

  • Lourenco Paz

This is a relatively small museum. You will not spend more than an hour visiting it. Most exhibits are interesting if you care about the Stockyards and its history. I like the artifacts from the early 1900s. Not many museums have them in display nowadays.

  • JJ Martinez

The museum was small but definitely worth the $2 admission for history buffs. It's a good way to escape the heat or kill 30 minutes while visiting the stockyards. The employees seemed genuinely happy to be there are were ready to answer any questions.

  • C Y Cooper

Whether you're a resident of Fort Worth or just visiting, a visit to the Stockyards Museum should be on your itinerary. It is absolutely Amazing and takes you through the history of not only the Stockyards but the city of Fort Worth as well.

  • Doug Osgood

A really interesting experience. Came while on a trip to visit some family in Texas. First time in the state! The museum was very wholesome. Nice, clear, informative displays about local history. Lots of information, very friendly staff.

Cute little museum. Donation based. A lot of history packed in tiny space! Palace Theatre Light Bulb which is in the Guiness book of world records because it has been lit for 112 years now. Must visit for History buffs !!
