Southgate remains open in order to provide essential products and services. In line with Victorian Government restrictions, some of our retailers will be temporarily closed while others will be open in a limited capacity. Essential service operators remain open. Our enhanced cleaning program remains in-place for the additional safety and security of our community. Opened in 1992, Southgate is a reflection of Australia’s arts, food and wine with a distinct Melbourne flavour, as can be traced through the history of the Southbank location itself. Southgate was always a meeting point on the Yarra River. A waterfall at Princes Bridge protected the fresh water coming downstream while trading ships could navigate upstream from the saltwater of Port Phillip Bay. This conveniently dictated the site of Melbourne. The south side of the river supported the young city with breweries and food processing, while shipping and trading utilised the docks and warehouses. Over time, the area consolidated into an industrial district housed in a messy collection of old buildings and vacant government land. By the 1940s the Trocadero dance hall, on the art gallery site, and Glaciarium ice skating rink, where the twin Southgate commercial towers now stand, were lonely leisure activities in the area. The large neon sign on the Allens Confectionery factory was the only landmark. The National Gallery of Victoria was relocated in the 1960s, the Victorian College of the Arts in the 1970s, and the natural evolution of the district was coaxed by a vision of a rejuvenated waterfront highlighting an expanded educational, cultural and leisure precinct. By the 1980s a co-ordinated government strategy led to the building and landscaping of the south promenade. This encouraged development of major commercial infrastructure. Southgate was born and succeeded all expectations by adding its own character to the area. For more than 20 years Southgate has been part of the fabric of Melbourne daily life, particularly for the growing number of local residents in the neighbourhood. The urban planning has been carefully designed to encourage explorationand discovery. A deliberate and sophisticated approach reflects the normal organic way a city grows overtime. The boundaries of the 2.4ha Southgate site are integrated into the surroundings. Thus you are naturally led to Hamer Hall, the Arts Centre, National Gallery of Victoria (NGV International), St Johns Church, Langham Hotel, riverside, Southgate office towers, across the road to the Australian Ballet, the ABC headquarters or under Princes bridge to the Alexandra and Botanical gardens and Melbourne’s major sporting facilities.

Every time I go to Southgate I am amazed that only 30 years it wasn't there and if I was walking that side of the Yarra I would be walking amongst factories! Southgate has a food court and many great restaurants. Bluetrain, The Deck, Pure South, Tutto Bene, Yassas, La Camera and more, and have had nice meals at all of them and at those no longer there, remember Wolfgang Puck? And of course a drink or two at PJ O'Brien's and remember no trip to Southgate is complete without nearly getting run over by a cyclist. 9.7 what's happened to Southgate? After Bluetrain lunch went downstairs to get gelato and nearly every food outlet closed, like a ghost town, so sad to see what was once a bustling tourist mecca a shadow of its former self. Anyway had delicious gelato (butterscotch and salted caramel) and enjoyed sitting in one of their 'igloos' to enjoy. 7.5.23 I do not know what has happened to the foodcourt, it is a wasteland and I would not want anyone from outside Melbourne to see it like this. 7.2 came to foodcourt before 6pm show at Hamer Hall and only 3 places open. Grill'd, Roll'd and Boost. Also very dark at entrance because I guess lights are only decorative?

Lovely place to walk by the Yarra River with the Prince's Bridge connecting the other side of the Southgate. Shaded with trees and a variety of food outlets. Seating areas are plenty. Food courts are varied with seating inside and outside with chirping birds and people out about their work. The theatres and multiplex and the view of the Skydeck as the sun sets and the warm light falling on the face of the earth is the most pristine moment of Life. Worth the wait and enjoyment . The place takes on a different hue after sun down and soft blue lights on the bridge comes on. The something about the bridge itself that makes you want to walk over it again and again. The sound of coarse sand rubbing against each other ?

This place has so much to offer! Great cuisines, view, walking lanes along the river and a very lively environment. I once went on the double decker boat ride too! This is one of my favourite places in Melbourne for lunch and ice cream. This place so romantic and very musical due to the street artists expressing their art along the river. I have many memories here

Jariah Restaurant opens right onto Southbank and is on the bottom level of the Quay West Hotel I was staying in. All you can eat buffet for breakfast. Straight out the door onto southbank and the Yarra River. And lots of shops along the walk towards the bridge Beautiful scenery. Crown Casino a short walk away.. and just catch a tram into the other end of the city.

Wow Southgate Melbourne Victoria So many different types of restaurants to choose from on the banks of the Yarra River I did not eat here today as I’m too busy exploring but will definitely be back 3 floors of restaurants plus you can shop before or after you eat Then you could go on a boat ride up the yarra You could spend a whole day here If your visiting Melbourne call into Southgate you won’t be disappointed

Southgate Food Court is no longer worth a visit. Less than half the businesses are open post Covid, prices are unreasonable and by 6pm the ones that operate are closed. This used to be a bustling place and great for the pre-show crowds looking for a quick meal and/or drink. It seems that management is not interested in lowering rents to entice more business and more visitors. I won’t bother stopping by again.

I'm old enough to to remember Southbank didn't exist and was just a large remnant pile of dirt. When I was around 10-years-old approximately 30 years ago, my dad would take us for a ride along the bike track and when it got to a South gate is, it would simply come to a halt. I still remember when it was finished and we went there for the first. It was fantastic then and it is just as fantastic now.

It's more of a food and bar destination as opposed to a shopping mall, there's not much shops here now really. Plenty of restaurants, from casual to fine dining. Most have some views of the yarra. Parent room available. Parking is open 24 hours, as a guide you can get almost all day weekend parking, with 1 hour grace period for $20 if you pre-book.

  • Kristin Inglis

Perfect place for a weekend stroll with the family or to have early drinks with friends/ co-workers. Close to transport. My one bit of advice for coming here whether for drinks, food or just walking by is to wear sensible shoes. Whilst yes this is close to night clubs and pubs, save your feet and ditch the heels til you hit the club!

I've never seen a shopping centre get so smashed by the whole COVID thing. This place hasn't recovered and won't for a long time to come. Many store have (permanently) closed... others are on life-support. While Asian students stay away and Chinese investors prefer to keep their Docklands apartments empty, nothing will change.

That carpark.... good placement, but there is NO pedestrian signage, and knowing where to go to A) get out, and then B) where you have to go, and then be, 'after hours' is awful.... p1, p2 Vs b1, b2 depending on lift.... colour poles helped, but different colours should be used on the different levels More

Very very disappointing standards have dropped to when I went a couple years ago before Covid ,was nearly over charge on the wine, meals I thought where average people were still hungry had to order again. I was looking for a place to have a work Xmas drink and meal .

  • David Judge

Amazing dine in experience. The place was very busy yet the service was very efficient. It is on the more pricy side yet worth it. We ordered the warm platter for 2 and it was so darn tasty. Will return and order the cold platter as that also looked very tasty. More

Wonderful place to walk by the Yarra River with views of bridges, Flinders Street Station and skyline. Nice restaurants, cafes, bars and activity. Pleanty of indoor and outdoor seating areas. In the heart of city centre with everything nearby.

  • Tony Carrucan

The Red Emperor is just outstanding in food, service and ambience, nestled alongside the Yarra River.

I love the restaurants, cafes, and hive of activity. Nothing more lovely than to sit at a restaurant or bar looking out at the river and cityscape watching the activity and scenery especially at night. One of my favourite places!

  • Rajinder K

If you're looking for a great place to eat in Melbourne, then you have to check out Southgate! This bustling area is home to some of the best restaurants in the city, offering a diverse range of cuisines and dining experiences.

  • Jennifer McArdle

We're regular diners at Commune restaurant. Excellent food & staff. We haven't been disappointed yet. We let staff know if we have a theatre event to get to & they pace our meal accordingly. More

  • Fay Labiris

A lovely events space with magnificent views of the city. The food was also delicious. The also thing I didn't like was the bathrooms being up a flight of steep steps

  • Em G

It was lovely and lit up with all the lights along the Yarra last night, very pretty The footpath did need some work as it is uneven and had cracks not very safe at

  • John Tango

Nice shopping mall with cafés & restaurants. Fabulous ambience. Eye candy view to the river bank. Most closes early by 8:30 pm. Except for the Red Emperor resturant.

  • Julie Van Wyk

Very tired! Nothing to recommend at all if you just want a coffee. With this location, there should be wonderful cafes vying for your attention. More

  • PETER NAD

This bar is one of the best places to drink a cold beer on hot days, it's similar to Hawaiian bars as if you are in the heart of Hawaii.

  • Minh Si

Fun experience. We ate at 2 restaurants here. Both were pretty good. The room at 28 southgate was beautiful. Thanks to Exclusive stays.

Tons of overpriced shops. Sure, there are some nice food and drink options here, but be prepared to pay the price.
