One of my favorite places in New Orleans for the past 52 years. As of August 24, 2022, they have again updated their projection system to some sort of Laser thing and recently the "Atmos" Sound system. The management is still asawesome as ever. I don't understand it and I kind of miss the "primitive" film projectors that were always breaking down in the 1970s. And the chinsey introductory music with the kaleidoscoping images. The Rocky Horror Picture Show crowd is much more sophisticated and brash than it was when my girlfriend had blue neon hair in the 1980s. The great Innovation of course is that now there are two Prytania Theatres I. NEW ORLEANS, BUT ONLY ONE ON PRYTANIA. The other is on the third floor of Canal Place, one of the most unauthentic non-New Orleans spots in New Orleans. But the multiplicity of locations did permit me, on Thursday night and Friday night July 20-21, to challenge my sanity by seeing three totally different movies : the 1966 French-Algerian production,"Battle of Algiers," followed by the absolutely hilarious new "Barbie" with Margo Robbie (she acquires her humanity and with it, a vagina) (both at Canal Place) and then on Friday evening, "Oppenheimer" at the original uptown location. All crowded.

Had a real rough week and it was my birthday so I decided on a whim to go on my own to see Rocky Horror. I had heard a bit about the live action during the movie but wasn't real sure what to expect. The Well Hung Speakers were incredible and the lady that played Magenta was wonderful and really livened up the part. Went thru the ritual of being a "virgin" which I had never heard about and ended the evening almost stealing Jesus's rosary. Sorry Jesus, I was picking up everything as a souvenir and, being my first time, didn't realize the rosary wasn't part of the things getting thrown around. At least it gives a good story for my first show. I absolutely loved it. Now I look forward to going back and seeing them again and not being a virgin :)

Movie was advertised as Candyman playing at 8pm Friday night online, it was also posted on the box office sign. However they told me it wasn’t showing at that time. I told them that it was being advertised online and at the theatre and I expressed the inconvenience it had caused me to drive across town, pay for parking (which I wasn’t discounted due to not seeing the movie I came for). I spoke with the manger and he seemed to not care at all. If two free tickets would of been offered I would of felt that this situation was handled properly due to the waste of my time and money. I was thoroughly disappointed in the experience.

Over 100 years old and you can feel the history before you even get inside. I went to an afternoon matinee on a weekday and met an elderly gentleman who used to go there as a young boy and told stories of how he used to throw popcorn from the balcony down onto the people below and how many films he's seen there over the years, and I watched him almost tear up as he reminisced. I paid $6 to see a new release film bit they show old classics and indy films as well. Service was super friendly and I'm so glad I went. It was 80 degrees outside but freezing during the film so bring a sweater.

The staff is always friendly here. This theater also hosts a wide variety of special events, from film fests to one-off screenings by the NOLA Horror Film Fest, to premieres by local filmmakers, such as Terror Optics Films. They also do limited runs of different themes, for example, films by a certain director each week for a month. The classics series are always nice, too. All of this is in addition to the current blockbusters. Concessions has the typical treats, but there is also a coffee bar; and this original, one-screen neighborhood theatre is also BYOB.

Bigger isn't always better. We love the intimate surroundings of the Uptown location. One of few locations, nationally selected to display Oppenheimer in 70mm film The lobby will surely and pleasantly take you back in time. Photos of majestic local theaters, smell of fresh popcorn and my favorite --the bar where you can order a bottle of wine or a classy cocktail. Updated, comfortable audience seating. Check-out the antique organ once used as a part of movie viewing ---seriously. Although nostalgic, online ticket purchase is available.

  • Kinnon White

Great theater. No longer BYOB though! I am so bummed. I understand them getting their liquor license and trying to make some extra money on liquor sales. So I cannot be upset about that so much, but not having an option for a bucket of beer or a way to keep beers cold during the movie was annoying and then closing the bar before the movie was even halfway done was also very annoying. Maybe let people BYOB again until y'all figure out a better setup for selling alcohol. I would literally pay 2-3x the ticket price for a "byob ticket." Just an idea!

  • Ryan Whitlow

It was okay for watching a movie within walking distance from our hotel. The cashier at the ticket booth was extremely rude. He threw my debit card on the counter instead of handing it back politely. Same with the tickets. The movie screen was off. Half the screen had a shiny film on it like someone poured water down half and it left spots all over. It was very distracting. Sound quality wasn't bad. I would personally opt to taking the drive to AMC next time if I want to experience a movie.

Whether you're going to see a classic film or one of the new blockbusters, this cinema certainly has charm. Aside from having the best popcorn known to man, the staff is incredibly friendly and welcoming. I also love the fact that they have old classic decor as well as the fact they pay tribute to the deceased owner in many ways. On the stage, you can still see the organ that used to be used in silent films. do yourself a favor and step back in time at this perfectly quaint movie theater!

Last night was our first time going to The Pyrtania and The Overlook Film Festival. We usually go to another local theater because it's our neighborhood theater, and we enjoy it. That said, we had a great time at The Pyrtania watching horror movies with like-minded people. The staff and volunteers were friendly and professional, the theater is well kept, and it's another locally owned theater we can support. What more can a movie fan ask for?

  • sydneysaurus

Went here for a midnight showing of Rocky Horror Picture Show with a shadow cast and everything was awesome. The theater was very clean (despite us throwing rice and bread and cards and toilet paper) and the staff were all very kind and patient. The theater is a little hidden gem on prytania street that had been standing for over 100 years. It's small but not well known so it should never be too busy. Absolutely recommend checking it out.

  • Lianna Mae Smith

Love everything about it. Well, besides finding parking along the street. Has an old-timey theater feeling, probably would be awesome for like themed parties or events. Has a coffee stand in addition to the basic concessions of soft drinks and popcorn and candy. Tickets and matinee are ridiculously fairly priced compared to the wide chain theaters. The community of folks running and surrounding the theater is awesome as well.

  • Noah van Lienden

Lovely theatre with a nice decor and overall vibe. The selection of food and beverages is a bit limited but covers everything you would need, from drinks, to slushees, to popcorn and sweets. The movie room we were in was medium sized a flat, so not tilt from back to front. This meant that if a tall person would sit in front of you, you would miss the lower half of the movie. Avoid this and you’re good!

  • Sarai Solis

This is not just a vintage cinema, it's a historical landmark, true movie lovers would love this place, it's like travelling back in time. It's located in a beautiful neighborhood so you can enjoy dinner after or before your movie. They sell popcorn, sweets, and nachos inside the cinema, not sure if they sell alcohol, I don't think so. The best movie theater in New Orleans.

  • Allison

This is an old school, over 100 years old!, theater. There is no slanted floor so tall people, please stay to the back. There is a small balcony. There is only one screen, but in addition to the one feature playing each week, they also do nightly (Or nearly nightly) screenings of old Hollywood classics. Once a month there is a Rocky Horror picture screening with live cast.

  • A b

The staff here is very nice. That's the best thing, and they actually gave me my money back or gave me voucher for credits because I had to leave the showing. I went to the showing of Oppenheimer and the sound was so terrible. It was super loud and it almost blew out my eardrums and it was a small theater that was very crowded so I had to leave after five minutes.

  • Sara Soriano

Great local theater that shows a combination of recently released features and old classics (cult classics included). Make sure to check the schedule before heading that way as it is a single screen theater so you won't have options for films or start times once you arrive. But it's a beautiful space and a historic theater that I definitely recommend checking out.

  • Karliegh Sparks

Great theater with a wonderful history and a vintage feel inside. We saw an Alfred Hitchcock classic and it was great! There is balcony seating which is unique and we had an announcer who gave film details before our film began. The tickets were reasonably priced at about $6 and there were coffee, soda, popcorn, and other concessions available.

  • Claudia Berry

If you are interested in smaller quiet theaters, this is the place! You can sit at a balcony level or at a ground level. The choice is yours! They don't have as big of a snack selection like AMC but that is to be expected. You can view older movies or newer ones without worry about long lines and crowds. Definitely worth checking out.

  • Kylie Davis

Had the extreme pleasure of seeing Isle of Dogs here last night. The lead in to previews was filled with classical music and a delight to sit and chat while we wait. The neighborhood is beautiful and the historic building is also a treat to enjoy. The grey cat I head everyone talking about was sleepy, but adorable and very friendly.

  • dana tomlin

Great theater! Lots of fun & varied movies are played here. Plus, there is a balcony! The sound is intense for the small space. It captures the surround sound really, really well. That was very cool! f you are sensitive to sound, it could be wise to try sound dampening ear plugs. They have normal theater snacks plus a limited bar.

  • Jenna Speight

One of my absolute favorite things that I did while in New Orleans. To be honest, I had not had high expectations as I chose to do this since it was one of the only businesses open for COVID. I was blown away by the atmosphere inside. The chandelier, old movie posters, classical music playing. It was so much fun!

  • Tessa Arnold

Always love going to this awesome neighborhood theater. Great ticket prices, and quaint old-time feel. They even play the Let's All Go to the Lobby song before the show. It's only one screen, so showtimes are limited, but they play classic movies there frequently. I suggest sitting on the balcony.

  • Cheryl Edwards

This is a quaint 100 year old theater with one screen. I enjoy coming here to see old shows and special events. The seating isn't the most comfortable and the air conditioning isn't the best when packed, but those things don't prevent me from loving and patronizing this theater.

  • John Hancock

Cute neighborhood theater with stage seating. Everything about it is nice. Want to give five stars, but they had issues with the 70mm projector and so had to play the digital version of OPPENHEIMER. Please let us know when it's fixed so we can come back and see it in 70mm!

  • xxxCaramel Bunny

It was amazing. Very comfortable seats, nice and clean, smelled great like a movie theater should. Just like butter, though in my opinion the popcorn was a tad bit too salty, but maybe that's how people like it. I would definitely come back also to see the cute kitty. ❤

  • Patrick Cox

Theater was clean and comfy. Should have kept the door shut when folks weren't allowed in to avoid confusion. Adequate video and sound system. I've seen a lot of Rocky Horror Picture Show production and The Well Hung Speakers is by far the worst cast I have seen.

  • Bri Chivatero

This is a nice theatre. I saw The Rocky Horror Picture Show here for the first time and they had nice seating and a good set up for the shadow cast, as they had both a stage and a screen, both of which were very visible despite being much shorter than average.

  • Brett Rettman

Has the feel of a old time movie theater! My only complaint is the seat are small and pretty much all the same level but they offer $6 matinee and the Coke is only a few bucks with free refills. I paid 6 or 8 dollars for a Coke at AMC theater not to long ago.

  • Chris “DIRECT” Greening

My favorite theatre in New Orleans! Trust me I'm a film student, I've seen 1704 movies, and the average is 2400 in a lifetime - I'll be there at 24. This place is great, just wish they had more than one film a week, but that's apart of being classic

  • Ron Knipple Jr

All I can say is I absolutely love this theater. Just a 10 minute walk from my apt and your there for the magic. Love the Horror film series especially. No new seats or flashy gimmicks just a old time nostalgia and reasonably priced concessions.

  • Crissy Bushman

A great neighborhood theater for special showings and performances. There's a bar for those who like to enjoy a cocktail with their movies. Snack bar prices are expensive, but not as expensive as the big theaters. This is a really great place!

  • Wade Halstead

Overall, i like this theatre. It is smaller than those suburban mega-plexes, obviuosly, and they try their best to give the place an intimate feel. One of my favorite nuances is the themed -series of movies they show, that run at different

  • Omnivia

Went to see top gun maverick. $26 for two people at the 4pm show. A 12oz can of AHA is $4 the zebra popcorn is $9. They show 1 movie at a time. Has an upstairs balcony. The seats are not made for hippy people. No one wore mask. Seats are a

I, for one, hate going to the movies. But last night we went here for the first time. What a stark difference! Intimate. Clean. Focused. Charming. Inviting. Local. A little punk rock, even. Absolutely loved the cinematic experience here!

  • Elizabeth Rodriguez

Love coming here. Watching a movie here is a communal experience, feels like every audience member is part of one group regardless of being strangers. Especially for newly released movies. People are more likely to react audibly and it

  • Aidan Wallace

Saw Rocky Horror here with a shadow cast by The Well Hung Speakers. Great way to spend Halloween. The theater itself is unique and screens some really cool stuff from what I hear. When I'm back in town I hope to see the Prytania again!

  • Selena B

The BEST show experience I’ve ever had. Some schoolmates and I went to see the Rocky Horror Picture Show and the crowd work was amazing! The staff was very respectful and hilarious. I am looking forward to the next interactive here!!

  • Nate Tinner-Williams

Seats are not particularly comfy, but the vibe is strong and that's how I like it. The theater only runs one movie at a time, so keep that in mind, but they have one-off retro and special-event showings all the time. Worth a visit.

  • Chris Ollar

we had a blast ☺ we watched Disney's new Lion King. very fun. I had bought tickets online for the previous week and life happened. The held my tickets at the box office. Very nice staff and a cool vibe. Will be going back soon.

  • Sara Bailey

The history of this theater is extensive. The crew working was well organized and great spirited. The chairs were comfy and accommodating to a larger hipped woman. Highly recommend seeing Rocky Horror with the shadow cast!

  • josh sixner

Charming old theatre. Ticket booth is outside main door. There it also balcony seating, thanks a gander if you can. There also looked to be a cafe too the right when you enter. Seats are a little crowded and stiff though.

  • Billy Bonsack

Last neighborhood theater in Nola. Great screen, sound, concessions , employees and devoted film fans. Best theater o the city. I’ve been going since 1974. Worked there in the summer of 1987. Great historic movie house.

  • Maida Torres

Wonderful 100 year old single screen neighborhood theater with a balcony!! They show great classics as well as firsr run films. There is something for everyone. An excellent place for families or a romantic date.

  • Kat McCann

One of the few local, family owned movie houses in New Orleans. We would rather go there than anywhere else to see a movie. Matinees are a great value! You get to know the family, and they treat you like family!

  • Rolonda Mayer

Fabulous original old Uptown theater. Great selection at the concession stand. Saw Mary Queen of Scots, another historical costume drama, my favorite movie genre. Walking distance to the St car & Mag bus line.

  • Jan Mill

Following all restrictions. Employees very friendly and it was nice to have someplace special to take my daughter for her birthday. The employee even put up a "happy birthday" on the big screen- nice touch.

  • Tave Fitzpatrick

Awesome local neighborhood movie theater. They truly don’t make ‘em like this anymore. Might take a little extra time to get in, get food and get your seats for super popular movies, so come a little early.

  • Vic

Such a cute theater. The maintained the vintage look but updated with a fantastic sound system. It is also in a very nice part of the city so it felt safer coming out of the movie once it was getting late.

  • Samantha Gravity

Love this theater! They are currently operating at 25% capacity, to adhere to social distancing guidelines. We saw Beetlejuice in a theater of 5, and had an excellent time. Can't wait for my next visit!
