This is our Review of our dining experience at the Bistro Overview The P.O.W., located on Buckland Road in Nundah, Brisbane, is a great dining choice for seniors and members of Monty's rewards program. The hotel is part of the A.L.H. Hotels group and offers great value for money. Food Being just my wife and I, we stuck to a fairly simple ordering protocol of a few drinks, followed by a calamari starter and for mains, two items off the seniors menu: my fave lamb rissoles and the fish and chips for my wife. The calamari starter was so fresh it tasted like it had just been plucked from the ocean. It was nicely crumbed in a crispy batter, the serving size was modest but it was the perfect way to start the meal. The rissole dish I’ve had many times at different A.L.H. hotels and they seem to have hit a winning formula because they’re always delicious. The patties were firm and well cooked just the way I like them, drenched in a rich and hearty gravy sauce and accompanied by a dollop of creamy mash and crispy garden peas. My wife's fish and chips was a decent portion of tender, succulent Whiting fillets accompanied by crunchy chips, a small serve of salad, and with a garlic dressing. The presentation was neat on stylish white crockery and we both enjoyed our meals. Service As with all A.L.H. hotels that we’ve visited, service was absolutely spot on. There were three female waitresses/bartenders on duty. They were all friendly, polite and helpful. I especially like the way they were neatly turned out in smart black uniforms with the P.O.W. logo on their shirts. We ordered our drinks and food at the bar, although one can also use the app ordering. My wife ordered the Martini espresso cocktail which was brought to the table. The food didn’t take long to arrive, just about 15 minutes from ordering. I appreciate that kind of efficient, no-nonsense service. No long waiting, everything comes out in the correct order and with a nice smile. Atmosphere I love the charming, retro interior with its comfy wooden furniture, low mood lighting, tiled columns and colourful carpets. It’s a homely and welcoming place, with a relaxed and casual vibe. Even though it was mid-winter, the interior was warm and comfy and I didn’t feel cold at all. Being midweek, it was fairly quiet with just a smattering of other diners, so the acoustics were fine and we were easily able to converse. Cost This is where these guys really stand out from the rest because despite Australia experiencing the worst hyperinflationary crisis that I can ever remember, one can still enjoy a few drinks and first class meals at A.L.H. Hotels, at affordable prices. Seniors and Monty’s Rewards Club members get even better deals. To illustrate, we paid just a tad over 70 pesos for a cocktail, two beers, an entrée and two mains. That’s outstanding value for money, so thanks to these guys for providing venues that struggling seniors and self funded retirees can still afford to go to. Toilets There’s a unisex toilet in the main bistro area and a few more up a short flight of stairs, in the gaming lounge. They’re all easy to find, clean and well provisioned. Parking Across the road from the P.O.W. is the Nundah Village shopping centre so we just parked there. Apparently, you can get three hours free, but we didn’t see any enforcement and there are no tickets or number plate scanning. It is a busy little centre with a popular Woolies supermarket and B.W.S. liquor store and it does get quite full, so finding a park may not always be easy. Street parking may be another option. Perhaps management should put some info about parking on their website. Summary We had a super pleasant evening at the P.O.W. on the night of the winter solstice. As with all A.L.H. hotels, we found the food to be fresh and tasty and served in generous portions. Service was friendly, polite and efficient and prices were modest. Add to that clean toilets and free parking nearby and you have all the ingredients for a pleasant and fun night out with family or friends

I called to ask how far the hotel was to the Brisbane International Virgina so that i can decide if this hotel was a good place to stay. A guy called Henry was very rude and unpleasant telling me he had a pub to run that there were customers in front of him. Well, Henry I am not psychic nor can i see what is going on there!... its a pity that for a hospitality outlet you were very unpleasant and i hope i wont ever have to stay in your hotel! Couldnt you have a different person answer the phone for hotel inquiries?? I have worked in hotels for 30 years and have never been as rude as you were! I was calling from another country and was trying to get some help. Also how surprising that you dont know Big hotel that is just 10 minutes from you... its not a 2 bit hotel, its an international hotel. yes, if they had rooms id be staying there but they didnt and so the next best thing was to find something closest to them. I am so deeply disappointed! I thought hoteliers were helpful, warm and friendly but i guess not all are

No stay. Only meals. My friend was flying in from NT, her flight had been pushed back from 2am in the morning to 4pm (5 delays). Kitchen closes at 8.30pm. At 8.20 I am still circling the airport to pick her up. I rang & pre ordered tea as we are not going to make it there before the kitchen closes. I am determined we where having tea at your establishment. Your staff went all out for us, I want to thank each & everyone of them that knew what was happening. We got our meals they where fantastic as normal..My friend being her first time there said it was beautiful. Thank you again from both of us, you went above & beyond to help us. I hope you don't mind but I put it all over social media what you guys did for us. I do bring all my outter towners to eat at your hotel each time they are in town. Thank you.

4 of us dined in for dinner last Friday night and ordered the eye fillet steak. Meals were A+. I gave 3 STARS as the Customer Service experience was a disappointment. One lady (hospitality staff member) spoiled our dining experience by being rude and no smile while collecting our plates. I seen her do the same to another couple seated behind us. The look on that Customers face wasn’t happy. We Waited half n hour for a pot of Earl Grey Tea because she rudely said the registers never received the Me&U app order. She never gave me any options. Fix the Me&U app and fix ya attitude mate. Don’t know why people apply for Hospitality positions if they don’t want to be friendly, helpful and smile once and a while. If they were short staffed or not, just put a smile on your face and be polite.

  • izzicopy

Have to say we were disappointed. Pretty dingy atmosphere—like a typical regional RSL. Steak was good, but overall a lacklustre meal. Kids cheeseburgers were tasty—homemade patty, but the meal didn’t come with sauce and the chips were just ok. The Asian salad was terrible. Just a basic salad, but drowned with soy sauce and a drop of sesame oil, not a proper dressing. So much soy sauce on it that I couldn't finish. The prawns I added we're cooked really nicely and had a good flavour. I could excuse the misgivings had the prices not been so high. We were sorry for this to have not turned out better. Love a basic pub, but these were fancy pub prices without the stylish decor or food quality to justify them.

I visited the POW while I was in Brisbane last week from Cairns as my Mum worked at POW for Neville & Carmel Rashford back in the 1980s. While I was there on Saturday the 30th September i decided to have the $21 lunch rump. I ordered a RARE rump & salad & mushroom sauce...........well when I cut into my rare steak it was cooked to perfection RARE just like I asked for. To the chef who cooked my RARE steak good on you & keep up the good work. Chefs here in Cairns don't know how to cook a rare steak. I'll be back

Food might be alright but I never got it. Dropped in to get a parmy, we were told by the bar staff to use the QR code/app/site/whatever on the tables to order. Waited and waited, noticed nobody seemed to be getting food and about half an hour after we ordered a guy comes out and tells the whole dining room that something was wrong with their ordering system and they hadn't been able to see orders, they're cooking up everyone's food now but there'll be further delays. Not wanting to wait 1+ hour for a pub meal we asked for refunds and went elsewhere. If they're going to force people to use these systems maybe make sure they function??

We 55 members of the Stilettos & Saddles Club enjoyed a fabulous lunch today. The meals were outstanding quality, quantity, presentation, flavours were amazing. All meals were so delicious, well cooked those who chose the steaks said they were perfect The Chef & kitchen staff are to be congratulated. The lovely friendly bar & floor staff were so kind looking after our every need with helpful friendly smiles. Thank you to all especially Simon who’s organisation was great keeping the day running smoothly. We will all be returning in the near future both within the Club and privately. Fabulous day enjoyed by all. Lorraine Erhart

Awesome venue. We stayed overnight. Rooms were roomy, clean, comfortable, quiet and amazing shower. All staff were very friendly. We had dinner in the restaurant and it was hands down the best steak I have got from a pub/bistro. Cooked to perfection (med rare, not medium actually med rare!!) The rest of my family’s food was also delicious. Location was great, we stayed there as we needed to be at the airport the next morning which was super quick. Lots of little shops just down the street as well. The only thing I would say it would be great if the offered breakfast, but that’s only because the dinner was amazing

  • Jeremy Grahms

Most of the staff are quite competent and pleasant. The food is reasonable if more expensive than I woukd like. There is one specific older woman with blond hair, who works there which brings down my rating. She has been there every time I ordered. She did not qrite down my friends order so he waited 30 minutes only to be told the kitchen was closed. She gave my girlfriend the wrong order twice and finally dropped the correct plate heaviky on the table and blurted "hear." The next time we went she got my order wring twice and wqs snarky when she was corrected the second time.

Avoid!!!!! Poor security in pokies room, anyone let in. Fight occurred and again security was nowhere to be seen. Very run down "hotel" which is more a motel from the 60s than an actual hotel. If you are staying in room 1 you get to hear anyone coming up the stairs due to the gap under the door like in backpackers. Not sure why ALH is associated with this establishment . With the money that company generates daily I m sure they can afford some well needed refurbishment

Book 3 rooms for 2 nights, we went there to check in but didn’t like it the fact that everyone has to share bathroom and toilet together. Ask for refund and the male staff was very rude to us because we said we couldn’t stay there cause of the share bathroom and toilet… they refunded us half of our money back and took half which is fine with us we don’t have a problem with that, but the problem we had was the male staff being rude to us with no manners.. we make a big mistake by booking in the first place.

The only issue with the rooms are that there are no power points next to the bed. The amenities are very clean. It was quiet. And all staff were very friendly and accommodating. Price wise it was good and not far from the airport. I’ll certainly stay there again.

Horrible experience for dinner tonight. I would never go back nor recommend. The manager provided horrible customer service after making a error putting through our dinner order. After waiting time to find out about what happened with our order to find out they didn’t charge us and didn’t want to provide us a desert but a icecream. Also we ordered a porterhouse steak that was 200g that was 100g fat. I am not one to write a review but after service that was that poor I am very disappointed.

The paid accommodation wifi is the free wifi that everyone in the pub is using, resulting in pathetic speed, .7 to 1 Mbit/s (80-125KB/s) The check-in signage isnt clear enough, rooms are clean and respectable, the bathroom/shower is oldschool but perfectly fine. Location pros: Woolies and plenty of take out within a 5min strol. cons, road noise is a thing, but expected. Overall a solid, cheap, close to airport stay with enough near by

Stayed here with parents sometime this year and it was a really fun experience on my part. The food was so good, I was vego at the time and after talking to one of the managers they sorted me out a really nice sandwich- they have other options too for vegans if I remember correctly. The bar was honestly so fun it’s always buzzing nicely, good drinks and prices. Saw a live music duo and a karaoke night. It’s a great place if you don’t mind some noise near your accomodation.

Pub frequented by violent losers. I was punched in the head by one one the “regulars”. Attend at your own peril, if you like the unemployed, the unemployable, and the worst of society then this pub is for you. Stay away if you value yourself. This was probably the fourth time I’d patronised this pub. I recommend that any reasonable person avoid this venue. It’s a dangerous dump. I have contacted the police but staff were less than helpful.

Simple straight forward accommodation as wanted. 4 adults in a 2 bedroom unit, nice lounge/dining area but no kitchen facilities at all. Couldn't rinse anything as no sink or taps. Beds comfy, car park great, trivial pursuit was funny. Easy to leave the next day by dropping the keys off.

Great hotel, accommodation at a good price, close to Brisbane airport and Andrew's parking...very friendly and helpful staff, good meals, we both had the Chicken Parma and you could have mash and veg, or chips and salad, we have stayed a few times now, and we would stay again. Very out dated pub. Toilet in the sports bar stunk and needed cleaning and the lack of TV's showing different sports in the sports bar was laughable. Had to go sit in the restaurant area to watch the NRL trial match on a small TV. Lady behind the bar in the pokie room was abrupt and rude. She must if been doing me a favour my allowing me to visit I guess. . Never going back that's for sure.

Great menu, Great atmosphere, service was almost perfect. Meals were excellent Desert was perfect however we ordered Tea for 2 we followed up when it didn't arrive it unfortunately still didn't arrive. The staff advised she forgot and then advised they didn't have the tea variety we ordered from the menu. I would have rated as 5 star but Unfortunately the tea issue at the end of the great night stays with me.

  • Donna Hein

Great customer service. Honestly, if you advertise roast meals on a Sunday, then serve up roast meals as per your advertising. Mashed potato and steamed vegs is not a traditional roast meal. Your photos show roast potatoes and pumpkin which is what is expected as part of a roast meal. Our turkey was delicious. However, dish up what is expected of a true roast meal and your clientele will expand.

  • Steve Brett

Friendly service and cold beer, what’s not to like? Well I could say the Chicken Parmy was a bit sad… actually it was a lot sad. The schnitzel was fine but a smidgin of tomato sauce, the thinness slither of cheap nasty ham and some melted cheese was entirely edible but clearly no love or care given, just slapped together… I’d have a beer here gladly but wouldn’t eat here again. Poor effort.

  • Fiona Marsden

We stayed in the motel style rooms prior to an early flight the next day. The staff were lovely and so helpful. The room was basic but very clean and the beds were comfortable. We had our evening meal in the family bistro and the food was delicious and well priced. Bathroom was very retro but clean and water pressure was good. A touch of rust on a towel rail due to Brisbane humidity.

  • Rob Williamson

Giving a 1 because I can't give a zero. The food is atrocious. The Chef doesn't care anymore. Gave it a couple of attempts as I didn't want to give up after 1 experience. Never going back. 'Sunday Roast' - boiled chicken, boiled spuds, boiled vegetables. Only 'roasted' item was a piece of pumpkin. False advertising. It has lost its will to live.

Horrible experience here. “Budget” rooms with shared toilets are not worth their exorbitant price of $90 as the toilet is at the end of the long hallway! Imagine getting up at the middle of the night to use the facilities walking about the long corridor! Plus, a neighbor was banging doors for some crazy reason. Definitely NOT recommending this place.

Great place for a stopover, retro 1960s bathrooms and very clean and tidy with all the mod cons! Don't expect luxury but expect great old fashioned service! Close to shops and public transport.. 3.5 stars …

We regularly visit nundah from the Gold Coast. This little restaurant/pub is welcoming, has good service, and surprisingly good food for a pub.

I went to the POW for a parmy and chips and watched the boxing. Fantastic service and friendly staff. I enjoyed the food, the meals were decent sized and very tasty. I am certainly going to come back again.

Went to Gaming lounge after work to grab a drink. Staff are nice enough. The clientele are exactly what you'd expect; unusual and a bit confrontational. Otherwise, I enjoyed myself out in the smoking area.

We came for the karaoke night and had an absolute blast. Krazy Kathy’s karaoke was fantastic fun, easy to see why it’s so popular. Everyone made us feel welcome and comfortable. Thanks very much!

Not a bad pub, staff are always friendly and go the extra mile, never had a problem with the food or service. Busy on a Sunday night but there's always a table or two available.

Cup Day. No food, no drinks. Would have thought Cup Day food would have been available all day. Not so. Not good for your reputation POW. Staff were pleasant however.
