Poc-Chuc serves food that is distinctly different from the usual Mexican fare that one gets in the Mission. They call it Mayan cuisine (that in itself was exciting!) and it encompasses the cooking styles of the Yucatan peninsula. First, even their salsa tastes totally unique. The tomato-based salsa is highly addictive while the tomatillo salsa is SUPER hot, beware! The menu items are heavy on meat, in particular pork and turkey and the portion sizes are very generous and you can be easily full on three tacos. Come here with appetite! Poc-Chuc means sliced grilled pork and that of course is a highlight here. They have a really nice variety of tacos and I would say, trying different tacos is the best way to sample their range of preparations! I must say the tastes were very unique and interesting and the presentations were delightful, especially for such a no-nonsense and budget friendly place (check my photos). Come here if you want to experience something off the beaten track and yet keep your pocket happy. Special mention to our server that evening who was probably only 15 years old. Not only was he super attentive and efficient (much more than many adults at other places) but his enthusiasm and genuine, warm smile is really rare! Hope it was just an odd summer evening that he was helping his family out there.

Shady area. I wanted to try the Cochinita Pibil, my favorite food from Yucatán México. As I entered I looked at the menu pictures and the advertisement for Cochinita included Black Beans and Rice, the lady behind the counter didn’t acknowledge so I went to the counter and ordered my Cochinita Pibil meal, I was served the dish with fresh tortillas along with the Cochinita, Pickled red onions, an habanero pepper, house sauce and rice, they missed the black beans. The food was less than average from what I had eaten before at other places, the Cochinita was water down and not very appetizing., I’m giving it two stars for the food because I liked the Poc Chuc taco (citrus marinated grilled pork). The inside of the place smelled old as in beer thrown on the floor for a few days. I should have known better as soon as I entered the place. I gave the place the benefit of the doubt but it didn’t live to my expectations.

Where do I start? Being latina and specifically, mexican, I must say that it's difficult to find places that proudly serve real mexican food. This is one of those rare places, when they specialize not only in Mexican food, but delicious Yucatecan Food! I attempted to go to Poc-Chuc on a Sunday, but found out that they don't open on Sundays! My second attempt was fructiferous: I ordered a Panucho as a starter, a corn tortilla filled with black beans and topped with juicy shredded turkey and garnished with pickled red onions. Delicious! I was actually full after eating that (portions are huge!) when my entree came to the table: A delicious plate with TWO pieces of chicken simmered in mole: A scrumptious and almost-black sauce made of dozens of different chillies and spices, with a side of rice, hand-made tortillas (that I have only tasted in Mexico) and black beans. The Aguas frescas are also great, sweet enough for me. You must try the Tamarindo one. I left Poc-Chuc feeling a little bit of nostalgia, but happy, so happy...

Great food, unpretentious, good atmosphere. When I went (Sunday evening) there was a live DJ with lights. It's the most fun I've had in a while, Pepas and reggaeton bumping while eating some really great poc chuc. The poc chuc plate comes with a lemon-marinated sliced cabbage, grilled onions, a savory veggie bullion rice, black bean puree, and some really fresh made tortillas (not your taqueria's tortillas! We're talking almost a quarter inch thick). And a couple lime wedges and salsa, of course. Tasty sangria. Not much to say about that other than that it was good, but a little light in portion (contrary to the entree, which was generous in portion). This place specializes in Yucatecan/Mayan food and a well-studied friend of mine says they have the best molé in town. Take that as you will, but I'll be trying the mole next time. Highly recommended!

August 2023: Stopped by for dinner and ordered the poc chuc pork special plate. My very first time eating Mayan food. I've driven by this place for years. Finally stopped when I was looking for a place to eat. The grilled pork came with rice, beans, tortillas and some grilled veggies. Everything was very tasty. I thought the marinade of the pork was good. Almost like a Vietnamese grilled pork marinade. The tortillas were super fresh. The pull is what I look for in a tortilla! Chips and salsa were delicious. Agua fresca was refreshing! And es muy Grande! Service was very friendly. Both workers were busy busy! Cons: The pork was very fatty. So I had to trim all the extra fat. I probably over ate because I felt uncomfortable for a while.

A humble restaurant removed from the gentrified pretenses of Valencia. The food is simple, but absolutely delicious, made with pride, but not vanity. The tortillas are among the best I've ever had, full and filling without sacrificing texture or lightness. You can taste the flame on the eponymous poc chuc, but it doesn't overwhelm the rest of the savory notes of the dish. The portions were generous, but without sacrificing any of the quality of the food. This is the sort of establishment that deserves to be bustling and is the type of restaurant any community would be lucky to have. That it stands out among the other restaurants in the Mission is a testament to its quality.

Poc-Chuc on 16th St/S Van Ness is a hidden gem! Tucked away two blocks from 16th Mission Bart, Poc-Chuc boasts to offer authentic Mayan food, exotic ! However, in real world, they serve some very good Yucatan fare in dimly lit and humble ambiance. If you are lucky you will be greeted and seated by a young boy with a charming smile and small basket of warm tortilla chips. To get started off he suggested us to get some empanada and solbute. Solbute was amazingly fresh and delightful. Next we tried two tacos - beef salpican and Conchita pibil. We tried the Poc-Chuc for entree and loved the flavor of the BBQ pork - mayan style. The flavor profile of all the food item and even the salsa accompanying the chips were completely unique and different from your regular Mission taquerias.

Good lord, this was some seriously good food. Quite possibly the best Mexican food I have had in SF and the Bay Area in general. We started off with the appetizer plate, which was...admittedly not very good. I was nervous for the main courses, until they came out. They completely redeemed the appetizer. We got the Poc Chuc, mole con pollo, and cochinata (cerdo). All of them were incredibly, especially the poc chuc and mole (+2 tacos for good measure). The star of the meal were the tortillas, which were just to-die-for. Probably the best I've had in a long time, sightly better than Gallardo's down the street. Homemade of course. The staff were also incredibly nice and patient, and the ambiance was friendly. All around, this is now one of my favorite restaurants in SF!

Delicious Comida Yucateca! I had tacos to try out their guisos and I was positively surprised: The Cochinita Pibil is really good, Salbutes de Poc-chuc (grilled citrus marinated pork chop) were delicious, and Chimole de Pavo (turkey meat in a dark charred chile sauce) was on point and just the right amount of spicy like I remember from when visiting Merida. Lastly their Pollo en Mole was outstanding and might be worth just getting for a whole plate of that. Their micheladas were actually good too. 6 tacos, 2 salbutes, 3 micheladas ~$75 (2 people) I'll be coming back to get the whole fried fish, their sopa de coditos on a lunch hour break.

Unmatched in it's arena! Great food, and the restaurant becomes a sort of club on some weekend nights, with a DJ, smoke machine, and lasers! Crazy cool. I had the cochinita pibil, salpicon, and bistec de res (which was my absolute favorite). Home made corn tortillas are incredible, as are the black beans. I would highly recommend this restaurant. I've been back twice, got the veggie trio both times. Phenomenal vegetarian (vegan?) option, the vegetables are all seasoned and cooked well, and the pickled onion/cabbage are a great acidic contrast. Be sure to ask for more of the hot salsa.

The Mission has many hip and trendy eateries, but most of them are only known for their “see-and to-be-seen” party atmosphere and not for their cuisines. Poc-Chuc is an exception! This cool Spanish Mayan restaurant serves great, awe-inspiring foods! And yes, the in-the-know crowd is lining up to get in! (Warning: it’s very popular, so reservations are almost always required for any night of the week!) Inside, the red and gold décor is warm and welcoming. Tables and chairs crowded the long, narrow interior. In a corner, a handsome musician plays romantic Spanish tunes on his acoustic guitar. The food is unpretentious, made with fresh ingredients, looks and tastes like a home-cooked meal, just delicious!

Have you ever heard Mayan/Yucatan cuisine in Mexico? I think this is the most unique and extraordinary place when it comes to eating Mayan/Yucatan cuisines. This is absolutely top notch!! Mole,Poc-chuc are the most representative cuisines which are awesomely good. Totilla is daily hand-made so the shape is not well rounded. Mole is watery but, simply good. Poc-chuc is winner. It has perfectly fantastic combination of citrus marinade and grilled pork. Taste is amazingly sour and flavorful. It looks like as if Korean pork is grilled with citrus marinade. Kotzito is insanely good. Taco is rolled, deep fried, smothered in tomato, black bean sauce almost like gravy. It was very unique experience!!

Loved dinner here. Everything was so flavorful, and the menu was different from most Latin American places. To start, the chips and salsa was excellent, with really crunch fresh chips. We tried the fried plantain appetizer, which was both HUGE and really really good. We also had the tostada which were tasty as well. Mains - the cochinita pibil was amazing - a really rich porky stew which was delicious. The poc chuc was also very good. Last, the salpicon was tasty but not as good as the other two. All the dishes came with particularly tasty rice as well. Service was a bit slow, and the appetizers came out at the same time as the mains, but I can forgive that when the food is this tasty.

The culinary experience at this place is truly remarkable. The food is fantastic, delivering flavours that impress without any pretentiousness. Fantastic. Food was amazing, portion size was as expected and staff were super friendly and let us stay and dine despite having to wait for our entire group. Inside the music is really loud and a bit stuffy but it’s cool, quiet and refreshing outside after 6:30pm. Great for a group of 4! I got 2 tacos and split the Poc-Chuc entree with 3 others. The rice in the Poc-Chuc taste fantastic and the pork is cooked really well too! Unfortunately charged us $3 more for the wrong drink but besides that would love to come back, thanks for having us!

Popped into Poc Chuc since it sounded like a different style of Mexican food from the standard Mission places. It was a great choice! The cochinita pibil was deliciously flavored, very tender, and served with a hearty side of homemade thick tortillas, pickled onions, and limes. Plus the server brought out chips and two salsas while I waited - both tasty, one really spicy. Will definitely come back next time I'm craving Yucatanean food

The reasons I love about poc-chuc are the food and people. I love the dish "poc-chuc": it is slices of grilled pork. And when I say grilled, it is GRILLED. This is the one of a few restaurants that really have that grilled flavor in their dishes. Thus I appreciated it! The server for us was very nice, showing us the mole sauce and telling us about the culture. The place is generally very cheap and affordable during the week day. However, the dinner menus on the weekends is definitely much more expensive. The take of that is not to go there during the weekend :)

Delicious Mayan cuisine, different from standard Mexican dishes. a block from the 16th & Mission BART station. We tried the shredded turkey tacos with cabbage and avocado, and the pollo pibil, a chicken stew with meat so tender it cut with a fork, Dishes are a good size and run about $10-$15. I'd give the food 5 stars, but the service was maybe 2 or 3 stars. The restaurant wasn't crowded, but our waitress seemed more interested in her i-phone than providing service. She even forgot to bring one dish until we asked when it would arrive!

Seriously. Just go here. Best tacos in the mission for me by far. Get the Poc chuc taco. A little longer wait I guess but the meat is slow cooked, so tender and tasty. The tortillas are so soft tender, gooey corn perfect authentic style. Felt so taken care of, this place is a Gem. Seconding what another reviewer said. Love that they have their miho on staff working hard and being professional. Wasnt able to tip cause he ran my card without adding a tip or leaving an option for one. Was weird but ill definitely be back to compensate.

Saw this place highly recommended but dragged my feet to come because from the photos it looks like any other Mexican place (and why go here when I could get a burrito?) but wow it’s the way the food is executed here that’s great. From the salsa that came with the chips (fresh ingredients) to the level of doneness the meat is cooked to the bite of the pickled vegetables to the softness of the handmade tortillas, this was delicious. There’s a nearby place with a similar menu and Poc-Chuc Restaurant is just on another level, go here!

Cannot speak highly enough of their food and service. The namesake speciality of the Mayan based menu Poc Chuck and the Cochinita Pibil are absolute musts (recommend early dine-in for most tender Poc Chuck, melts in your mouth when they very first grill it up). And the tortillas freshly made each day from fine white masa, are a rapturous experience that everyone deserves to have at least once in their lives. Our diets are limited by gluten and dairy restrictions and this is our very favorite restaurant, hands down.

Very courteous and attentive young gentleman going around helping the customers. I got the turkey mole and really appreciated how fresh and flavorful everything was. Yes, even the rice was perfectly seasoned and not just forgettable like most places! The mole was more of a soup consistency but still quite tasty and the amount of turkey was generous! You can tell that tortillas were handmade with lots of love! Impressed and glad I was able to pay them a visit!

Poc Chuc looks like a hole in the wall, but only the service can really match up to the name. The flavors are decent but not outstanding, and run starting at $13 for moderate sizes. For any of the rice plates, you'll also be treated to pureed black bean soup and tortillas. I'd recommend the Poc Chuc for carnivores and anyone hungry. However, the service is impeccable and you'll feel welcomed the moment you walk in. Please note the restaurant is cash only.

Lovely, locally owned restaurant.We got the platos mayas, the cochinita pibil (amazing, generous portions, not pictured) and the pescado frito featured in picture. I love that the tortillas are handmade, the food is reasonably priced, and they have outdoor eating options. I always walk by this place and on the weekend evenings they have some sort of karaoke and are super busy. Went on a weekday night and had no problem getting a table and quick service.

It's fine. The watermelon water was good, I added quite a bit of water to dilute it and to make it less sugary. The handmade tortillas are REALLY good as well as the salsa. The poc-chuc is good but I had higher expectations for the flavor and texture of the meat.. The dish comes with sides. In terms of service, there is one waiter who is really nice and some others that are not super friendly but that is not a factor in my rating in this specific case.

I ordered the poc-chuc plate, which was very well cooked and came with delicious black beans and white rice on the side. The cabbage slaw on the side is deliciously citrusy and a perfect side salad. The salsas are on point. I didn’t love the chicken pibil tacos (too squishy), but the homemade sangria is a must try and really packs a punch! Would definitely return.

The food is good. The service is poor. But the last straw was when we went this past Sunday. They have added a DJ and karaoke (which many will enjoy). But, the music was way too loud for conversation. Finally, the main problem I had was after I asked for the check, our server (also the owner) went and sat down with another table to chat. Four stars for the food, minus two for the poor service and ambience.

Great mayan/spanish restaurant. I would say it's my favorite Mayan place, but I haven't been to many. Poc-Chuc is a great restaurant that's reasonably priced. Which is difficult in the mission. Easy to get reservations, with great food. I recommend the Poc-Chuc meat dish. They serve beer and sangria. Parking isn't too bad around here, but it's walking distance to the main bar area of the Mission.

A superb dinner experience. The guac is good, the pollo pibil is great, and the fried fish is great as long as they don't overcook it. I will happily return here. Note that this isn’t simply Mexican food and is far more unique. There are many dishes I have never seen before! Edit: I recently left my credit card here and they were awesome about holding it for me. The tacos are great as well!

It's true, the poc chuc is all sorts of juicy and flavorful and a must try. There's the poc chuc platter but you could also do a poc chuc taco (off menu, comes with bean puree and avocado). Cochinita pibil taco was also very good. Only wished they added some greens to the tacos.

Fantastic food, wonderful service I made reservations, by phone, for a party of 9 people to celebrate a friend's birthday. Everything was great! The guacamole was very good, awesome chips, I got the Poc Chuc, and it was great. The rice was amazing. The service was awesome. I plan on going back even though I live in the east bay. I loved it.

Low key restaurant with yummy food. I completely forgot the names of these appetizers we ordered... they were about $5 each. Both were so delicious. One has black beans on the base of the tortilla, the other does not. Both are yummy. The shredded chicken is cooked nicely. Tasty, yet not overly salty (the way i like my food) Very filling.

The Maya platter not worth $17 plus tax. 5 items of fried tortillas . Two of which had beans and chicken, the remaining three just fried corn tortilla topped with tomato salsa and cheese. All 5 items were small. I think $5 or $6 would be the reasonable price

This place offers one of the best Mexican food in the city in a unpretentious setting. Yucatan to be specific. Reasonably priced and absolutely delicious. The Poc Chuc tacos or plate is a must (namesake chargrilled pork with a citrus marinade).

One of the best-kept secrets in the Mission - a Mayan food restaurant off the main strip in the Mission on Van Ness. Go with the sampler platter on the Appetizer menu to try a bit of everything. Then, for the main entree, definitely order the Poc Chuc dish (although anything you order will most likely be amazing).

Family-owned place with a lot of charm and a hidden gem. Food here is amazing and great portions for the prices. Have had about four or five entrees and all have been spectacular - recommend the turkey chimole. Try the juices. Chips and salsa come free and good spiciness. Definitely worthwhile to check out.

This place had been on my list to try for awhile. I wasn’t sure if it would live up to all the hype. It surpassed it! This food is filled with soul. Made by beautiful people with kind eyes. Probably the best tortilla I’ve had in all of SF. It’s a symphony in your mouth! I will for sure be back.

Cute "hole in the wall" Mayan style restaurant near Z Space theater and other small art installments. Really good, authentic food with hand made tortillas and black bean puree served with every meal. Huge portions, so don't overdo. Decent prices-and don't miss the agua fresca.

This is one of my favorite restaurants in SF. The portion size, as well as the complexity of the dishes (each one comes with several sides and options) make this a must-try for anyone. Ambiance isn't great, but the food more than makes up for it in my book.

Air conditioning wasn’t working and it isn’t the nicest restaurant in appearance so I almost left but am so glad I stayed. The food and service was amazing. I had never had this style of Mexican food but it was really delicious. Will definitely return.

Rich Mayan food with generously sized portions. The food is similar to Mexican but more interesting than standard taqueria fare (that's the "mayan" part, I guess.) They don't serve alcohol. Ambiance and location are quiet, off the beaten path.

Baller Yucatan style mexican food. We always get the Poc Chuc and Conchinita Pabil, they rock! The house made tortillas are thick and tasty and the habenero sauce is perfect. My son got the Poc Chuc nachos this time and they were super good.

It really depends on what you get here. The whole fish is amazingly cooked, but I'm not too sure if it was just a special for the day. The rib eye, ordered medium-rare, was tough as cardboard, but the sauces made up for it.

This is our local favorite in the neighborhood. Definitely a hidden gem. We are so thankful this family run restaurant is still around. Highly recommend: Panuchos Mole Guacamole And definitely try their homemade hot sauce!

The food here - OMG! We had the Mayan platter and poc chuc which was a gorgeous flame charred pork!!!! And the outdoor hut gets full sun - brilliant! swing by to help small businesses that makes Mission amazing!

Pretty tasty and modestly priced. My first go was dampered by very loud music and patchy service, but the menu was just full of interesting options. So I'll probably give it another try for lunch some day soon.

An unremarkable-looking place with outstanding food, a mix of Mexican and Mayan. The signature poc-chuc dish I had (essentially pork slices grilled carne asada style) was excellent.
