This museum includes 50 curated objects from those who had a war Childhood, including 44 from Bosnia & Herzegovina and 6 from Ukraine. Each object is accompanied with background or a story from the owner of it. Some of the stories are absolutely heart-wrenching but help you to imagine a childhood innocence that has been slashed by ongoing conflict (through no fault of the child). The staff were really helpful and explained the exhibition before I went in. Student discount is available. I spent around an hour here including watching some of the video-documented memories of a war Childhood.

This museum is cleverly designed using a concept I've come across once before. There are 51 items displayed, each of which provide the anchor for a story from one of these children of the war years. Each item has a particular significance to that child and the stories can be either read or listened to on the free audio guide provided. I recommend the audio guide which come with comfortable headphones. The stories for each item last between 30 seconds and 3 minutes, giving audio coverage of a bit more than an hour. I reserve the 5 stars though for the "Museum of Crimes against Humanity" which has more to see. Entry fee is 10 KM.

Made me tear up reading the stories of the children who grew up during the war.. The exhibitions are very well done and properly captioned to tell each story. I love it that they had little ladders and signs saying "ask an adult to tell you the story" - meaning they welcome kids to come in and view the exhibitions. Regarding logistics, there are lockers to keep your belongings before you enter. Worth a visit if you are coming to Sarajevo!

What a inspiring museum!! I was witness of this war when I was in high school and I was so sad to hear what happened in Bosnia ,especially to kids. Now I saw what was the kids feeling that time. Was so sad and funny stories .Thats why I put them all on google so you can read. Two ladies was awesome who was at the reception .They speak very well english that makes things easy. I believe this place is one of the hidden place that needs to be visited. 8 euros each person, kids under 18 is free! Takes 30 to 40 minutes! Have fun!

The concept is simple: a collection of objects with short childhood memories of their owners during war in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Visiting it could be difficult holding back some tears, there are very harsh stories but at the same time you are surprised by fantasy, stubbornness and hope that especially in children resist even during a war. It's not just another war museum in Sarajevo, I think the idea behind the museum is revolutionary because it has potential also for exploring the theme also beyond Bosnian war.

  • Ying Wah Chan

Excellent museum collecting personal belongings and stories of children who grew up in war - mostly from the 1990s Bosnian War but also some from Ukraine (and they also have a lot of different countries which they curate a different selection each year). Really heavy stuff to digest, as a perspective of how the impact of war carries on, especially for a long time in the children who had to go through it.

The museum is beautifully put together and showcases some very touching artifacts from children during the war. It helped me understand the impact of the was on childhood and reflect on current issues worldwide that have a negative effect on children. I was very touched. It is simple and small yet very nice and really makes you reflect. At the end there is a small play/reading area for children and there are several children’s book about war and conflict. I highly recommend everyone to visit.

Very original view on the Sarajevo during the siege in the 90’s.You can find collection of toys and things precious to those living in town through war, each telling it’s unique story.I really like the book by Jasminko Halilovic Djetinstvo u ratu (available also in English)which inspired the whole exhibition, you can either look through the book there or buy it.The people working there were really nice.I surely recommend to visit the museum to everyone when visiting Sarajevo!

  • Anis Proudman

It can be difficult to present such horrific events, but the war childhood museum does a good job of presenting the human side of things from the perspective of the child survivors rather than relying on the shock factor of greousome pictures. Staff were very friendly. Definitely worth a visit. Take the time to actually read all the placards though or you will totally miss the point of the way it's presented.

  • Joeri Van den Eynden

This place will leave you breathless and teared up. An absolute must to visit if you are staying in Sarajevo. I purposely haven't added any photos from inside, so you can experience these heartbreaking stories yourself. They also sell a beautiful book with quotes by the children who survived the war. It is a beautiful reminder why peace is so much more desirable, so again: do NOT skip this one on your visit!

  • David Galoustov

A collection of items alongside short stories or memoirs that people have contributed to the museum related to the war. Some are light hearted while others are very heavy and heart breaking. Small, clean and well designed museum that will give you insight into the lives of children caught in the crossfires of destruction and give you something to think about. Cash only ~45 minutes

  • Ioan Pan

A quite impressive museum/ project, it should be visited by everyone. It might change the perspective in the whole horrible debate we have about refugees. The objects/ exhibits, are memories from those who were kids during the war, with their stories. Really touching and interesting. Unbelievable what they've experienced during war. The staff was very friendly and well prepared.

  • Ula Hribar Babinski

This musemum takes stories of children, how they came through the war time. Every story of the child is presented with one subject violin, tedy bear, a tin of charity organization, a diary,... I couldnt leave the museum without tears. Its very personal museum.

Really nicely put together. Very illuminating and touching. It was interesting to me because I remember when I was 14/15 years old and seeing the war in Sarajevo on the news. A lot of these memories were from my contemporaries, and it was interesting to learn through their eyes. If you’re only going to do a museum or two in Sarajevo, make it this one and the Tunnel of Hope.

  • Kris Best

This museum is brand-new, and I strongly recommend that every visitor to Sarajevo come to see it. It portrays the reality of war through the experiences of the children who survived it. Some of the stories are uplifting, most are heartbreaking. This museum offers something very unique and almost did not get built, so it is very much worth the trip to visit.

  • Haris Celic

One of the better museums that I have been to. Really puts what happened during the war into perspective from a new and different direction. Had to take pictures of several things that were presented really well like this child’s swing and even the empty casing of a rocket/missile used during the war. The museum is a must visit during a trip to Sarajevo.

  • Subhroneel Chakrabarti

A must visit for anyone visiting Sarajevo. A place is not just a location, it's also the people, their history. This museum originated from the history of Sarajevo and now transcended all man-made borders to chronicle the vicious cost of all wars on children all over the globe. We must learn the history, witness it, so we may never let it be repeated.

  • Javiera Galaz

Very interesting museum. I was very touched by the stories. It is better to go with children who can read but they have a nice area for smaller children where they can draw and read some books (my children enjoyed that area very much)

Very good museum containing tales from children during the war. The museum has over 4000 different items, each with its own experience told from a child. Very moving and one of the most touching museums I have ever been to. If you are in Sarajevo you must visit this museum. Entrance fee was 10 Km when we were there on April 30th, 2018.

  • Iryna Khmelevska

Rather small but absolutely touching place to visit. You will be touched to the bottom of your heart, exposition changing often in order to give possibility to present new objects collected. Personnel working there is very attentive and giving all introduction with details and devotion. Take your time to visit it. Highly recommended.

  • Linda C

Very friendly staff that said most people take about 1h40min for the museum. I got there roughly an hour before they closed and managed to see the enitire exhibition. It's 50 items with descriptions and video testimonies (ca. 15minutes), so it depends on how fast you read. I wouldn't rush it though, plan an hour and a half at least.

  • Nadia

This is a really good museum offering a different perspective on war. You don't usually think about the children that grew up during war times but this place gives you a profound insight on their experiences. Some harrowing, some touching stories. Definitely a must visit when you are in Sarajevo.

It is a nice to place to find out how our childhood would be if we grew up during a war. You can see different items from the war in Bosnia, Syria. Each item has a story behind. Ps. locks and guides are free. Workers are quite helpful. 5 euro for entrance for this place may be a bit expensive, however, it is worth to pay a visit.

  • Tamás K.

It was a really emotional and shocking experience to have a chance to see the childhood stories and objects of the people who experienced the war as a child. You can see belongings and anecdotes about them. You can also watch interviews with some of the people who was a child during the war. Great exhibition and work!

  • Elias Staubli

This museum doesn't have any objects of material value. They're of personal value and that's what makes it so special. Finding out about the stories that are related to them is very touching and helps to gain a deeper understanding of what the impact of any war is. I would recommend everyone to visit this place!

  • H TRON

Great museum, a superb and innovative concept which includes both personal stories from the children of Sarajevo siege and meaningful stuff connected to them, such as diaries, clothes, letters, toys, packages... I wish the museum was bigger and I hope it will expand both its space and activities in the future.

  • Pietro Sardaro

A delicate journey into the resilience and ingenuity of children. A poignant reminder of the scourge of war. Visiting this one-of-a-kind museum was a unique experience, a powerful insight into the human condition. If you are not afraid of being overwhelmed with emotions, don't miss it when you are in Sarajevo.

  • Lanokota Phoenix

Some stories attached to items from wars in a few countries. There's some interesting stuff, but not a lot of context. They say they have thousands of objects but only about 50 or 60 in the museum at once.

Powerful museum that uses everyday objects to tell children's stories from the war. The purpose is not to shock or horrify the visitors, but rather to convey the pain and confusion - as well as the moments of light - of a war childhood. This is done very well, and the staff are friendly and knowledgeable.

  • Rupert Wolfe Murray

One of the best museums I've ever been to. All arranged through the perspective of the objects if the children who lived through the war. The captions are beautifully written, concise and perfectly edited in English. A must-see for anyone visiting Sarajevo, whether foreign or from Bosnia Herzegovina.

  • Javier Salinas Gómez

This is the most emotional museum in the city. It actually reflects how children see and feel the war in their short lives. There are sweet and tough stories, which will make you think about your childhood and the lack of awareness we have got about how kids are raised in this kind of environment.

  • Malcolm Currie

Wow! This is such an amazing museum - personal, heartfelt stories, each illustrated by an object (or several) that each person has kept since they grew up during war. How anyone could fail to be moved, I don't know, but there is so much truth about war contained in there, its also enlightening.

  • Elyse Painter

Poignant museum, with 50 different items from children who experienced war (most from Bosnia, but not all). Each item is accompanied with a short story from the donator. Some of the items are positive memories, while others are a reminder of a young friend or sibling lost. Well worth a trip.

  • Tomer Koron

As a child born in the war I'm amazed how well this museum presented the view of the war from a child's perspective. I was reminded of the things from the war that I forgot by the time. It's an overwhelming experience but totally worth it, not many museums give this perspective of the war.

  • Tom Page

Carefully curated, understated and quietly tragic. Friendly staff introduce you to a small, well considered museum showcasing a rotating collection of stories from people who were children during war and accompanying artefacts. Short, pithy, poignant and memorable; thoroughly recommended.

Such an important museum with touching stories which remember me of my own childhood during the war and our fleeing from the hell. A must-see for every visitor in Sarajevo, in order to understand the recent history of the city and country and its impact on children who are now adults.

  • Iljawitsh Vermeulen

If I can recommend one museum in Sarajevo this would be it. By showing items of children living in war conditions, and explaining what they mean to them, visitors will be moved by the stories. For me I could relate these stories to my own life and got a better appreciation for it.
