This bar is a place that's near and dear to my family. I hadn't been there since the hipster invasion but decided to go. My daughter visited there a couple of months ago and was telling me how the bartender was very knowledgeable about the bar's history so I wanted to see for myself. Upon arriving, there was a pack of young people who seemed to cringe as you came near them and their backpacks. We walked into a place that literally has history on every surface and were greeted by a " How y'all doing tonight". I know I'm from southern Brooklyn but our accents don't sound like that. Fuggetaboutit! We were promptly served and I noticed young people crammed into the old wooden telephone booths as if they were mini private hangout rooms. (Not sure if you noticed I'm not a fan of hipsters). I began wandering around, looking at the many old photos that line the walls. My friends and I are Brooklyn through and through. That means we might use our outside voices inside, or might sing along with whatever song is on. When we do this in our natural habitat, people either join you in song or don't even notice. But being a very observational person, and CLEARLY not in Brooklyn that people know from tv and movies, I noticed other patrons looking disapprovingly at us. Not one person in there was smiling or laughing( just a sidenote observation). Then the bartender remembered the obligatory speech and demonstration of a scale model of an engine the Mr. Montero built and turned it on to show us that it still worked. When we returned to our seats, Smooth Operator came on and we began to sing along. At the point of the sax solo, my friend was doing his "air sax" solo at which point the bartender sees this, shoots a look to what I can assume is a regular, and gives the head tilt that says "omg you HAVE to see this weirdo". Said regular, turned to my friend and in the patronizing way that only a hipster could speak says, " hey buddy..look at you go" and turns back to his companion. I had had enough and we promptly left. My thoughts: the obligatory speech about that engine was awkward for myself and the presentation aspect, the people there kind of sucked, if you want an authentic Brooklyn experience- that whole area is not the place to go. I will not be returning until the tourists move out of Brooklyn

This space is not meant for people of color! My friends and I had to learn the hard way, as we were accused of stealing “karaoke forms”… the only way to receive karaoke forms is by buying drinks; we had bought 3 shots. The owner of the bar stated after accusing us of stealing said forms: “I own this place I can do what I want, if you don’t like it then get out” she wanted us out way prior to the accusation and it is so sad that blatant racism like this is still happening !!!! Seriously, why would we go behind a bar to steal small green pieces of paper, to then place our names on it and sing on a mic… it’s laughable! The real issue was the color of our skin ! We spent money there and we’re basically told to leave and we couldn’t even enjoy our night! Please if you are a person of color, DO NOT go here!

I am giving this a one star solely for the person running karaoke. As a non-regular she moved my card to the back multiple times. We waited two hours and were not called, the average song is 3 minutes and 17 seconds, that means about 40 songs played without us going up. The service was great and the atmosphere was fine. The drink prices are way too high for this bar as well 10$ for a well and cranberry is absurd if you consider yourself a dive bar. 7$ for a beer is also a losing proposition. Your business treats visitors like garbage and only cares for regulars which is a great business tactic if you never want to grow.

I ordered 7 beers and was charged what I thought was $40 (I even clarified) - I gave $50 and thought nothing more of it. Later, there was an announcement calling out "the cheap f___ who only tipped $1" - it was me. An honest mistake, I would never willingly undertip, but please just speak to me privately. No need for a humiliating announcement. Awful place. Pay your staff. Pathetic institution. I will never go back. PS when I went back and tipped an extra 43% I did not get a shout out. I would've loved a shout out.

This place is legendary. There’s history on the walls everywhere you look. It was a bar jukebox and a pool table in the back room. They have kareokee one night a week but it’s super chill usually. This is a bar! They don’t have beer taps, beer is in a can or bottle. Don’t come here for cocktails with umbrellas. Come out and have a bottle of beer and watch tv with the owner who’s usually sitting at the end of the bar.

$10–20

A charming local bar that offers a good place for grabbing a beer and laughing out loud with your friends. It has a good energy and feel. You might even get a surprise on the right day, if you are lucky. Perhaps a few people singing karaoke, who have suspiciously well-tuned voices. Perhaps a face at the end of the bar that looks oddly familiar...as if you saw them in a movie or on television. Just take it in stride and enjoy it for what it is.

I should have known what I was walking into when we decided to try to see how this place would be for their Friday night karaoke. I'd read it was crazy packed - but people sometimes exaggerate. Oh but no - not the case here. The bar looked fun in general - lots of personality (read: not so polished but still somewhere you wouldn't mind passing several hours), but I don't think I'll be back again to try to tackle karaoke.

Truly one of my favorite bars in Brooklyn. The ultimate classic-meets-eclectic dive with cheap tequila and cheaper Fritos, an equal amount of die-hard regulars and newcomers of all ages/stripes/styles, and a killer staff. This is def a dive but backed by big history with enough Knick-knacks, photos, etc. adorning the place to keep you entertained until your karaoke song is queued—and long after.

  • Howard

Original, old-school Brooklyn bar. Hip before hipsters were hip. Don't bother asking what's on tap because they don't have them. Bottles of beer with no nonsense, but the owner and bar staff are welcoming and chatty with anyone. They make you feel like a local within minutes. Don't assume the 'bar and grill' on the signage means anything more than just 'bar'.

  • Kyle Harder

You go to a dive bar for the experience, people and ambiance. Not quality. I loved every second of this place. Total sailor bar with a theme that's hard not to appreciate. Pool table in the back. I came on a Wednesday night and they were playing Planet Earth with volume on and a sporting event on small TV with no volume. Expected unexpected.

  • Will Lynch

This bar is so random, it’s all cash, they have karaoke that you just do in the middle of the room, drinks are pretty affordable, and they have a pool table in the back. Only thing is it’s a narrow long room so when it gets crowded it’s a scene. Overall would recommend if you find yourself in that part of Brooklyn looking to do some singing

  • Gabriel Castellanos

Great bar with a jukebox and an amazing bartender. Kaddy is the best!!! Matt is a man with tons of information and is always willing to talk. Karaoke on Wednesdays and cheap beers all the time. Bring your own food as they don't have a grill but who cares, you're amongst great company!

  • Mark Elliott

The Best Little Dive Bar in Brooklyn! This place is a classic. It appears to have been created at about the same time God created the moon. A very comfortable place -- service with a smile. Good karaoke crowd when Amethyst is hosting. She sings well herself and she's easy on the eyes.

  • Christian Holland

There is a bar like this in every town. It is the place you think of when you hear the word "bar." If authentic was a sensation, it could be felt through this bar, its owners, their patrons, and all their stories.

Cash only (but don't worry there's a cash machine that'll charge you), making the already not cheap bottled beer (nothing on tap) more expensive. Very few seats. An odd experience. Best to go further along Atlantic Avenue and find somewhere nice.

  • Fatima A Ben E

My fav bar in the area very cool owners the drinks always on point . If you wanna get away from you’re week day stress and enjoy a nice peaceful relaxing night this is the place also they have karaoke Thursday and Fridays which adds more fun

  • Shaunna Randolph

Leave pretentiousness at the door. On karaoke night you'll walk in alone and walk out with 50 friends from all walks of life. It's a great place to celebrate life's wins and get over it's setbacks. I always leave smiling. You will too!

  • Paul Fusco

Best dive bar in Brooklyn. The bartender has a 40 year old stop watch around his neck and tells stories of what life used to be like in Brooklyn Heights. Buds are $2 no matter what time of the day or night. Yes, I'll have another.

  • Katharine Hylton

There aren’t a lot of places like this left in New York. My husband’s great uncle came here when his ship was stationed by the pier in the 1940s and I suspect it hasn’t changed much since. Cheap beer and a lot of atmosphere.

  • chris caracciolo

One of, if not the oldest bars in the neighborhood. Great jukebox good stiff drinks, cold beer, pool table and a classic Brooklyn vibe and feel. Stop by before it's gone. You never know when places like this get bought up .

  • Eric Nightlinger

Great owners, very friendly. Nostalgic bar for sure! Pool table in back and soon to have an APA League on Sunday late afternoons starting this Fall Session. Please sign up if interested in joining a local pool league!

Had a beautiful experience on a Friday night. Loved the atmosphere of the bar, the owners were so nice and it was a funny karaoke night. Go fo it. I was probably the only tourist. Recommended

Show your vax ID to get in. But show your ID to vote is too much to ask. "talk to the mayor" this guy says, as he plays along with his game. Just stop man. You're part of the problem. …

Fantastic place! Found by accident and very glad! Bartenders Caddy and Brittany are so nice. What a friendly crowd! I'll definitely return here when I come back to Brooklyn.

  • J. Graham Fadden

Awesome local joint. Where else in New York does the pizza joint next door drop off it’s extra pies at close, and everyone grabs a slice? Bud lights on ice. Can’t go wrong.

  • Glenn Käsner

An old favourite watering hole from my merchant navy days in the late 70's I was pleased to see its still in business with much of the old "charm" and character.

Cool little dive bar. It's obvious the owner is just hanging around for fun, doesn't care if it does a lot of business or not. Getting really run down.
