Located on the corner of Rideau Street and Sussex Drive in Ottawa, Metropolitain Brasserie Restaurant offers a delightful dining experience that transports you to the streets of Paris. On a scorching Monday evening, my companion and I had the pleasure of enjoying their inviting patio seating, which provided a perfect setting to unwind and indulge in their delectable cuisine. Despite the restaurant being quite crowded, we were pleasantly surprised to find numerous empty seats available when we arrived at 7:30 PM. This allowed us to select a comfortable spot and enjoy the vibrant atmosphere while basking in the warm summer evening. We opted for the fish and chips and the club sandwich from the menu, and both dishes surpassed our expectations. The fish and chips were impeccably prepared—crispy, golden-brown batter encased succulent fish that flaked apart with each bite. Accompanied by perfectly cooked fries and a tangy tartar sauce, this classic dish satisfied our cravings with its delightful flavors. The club sandwich, another standout, was a harmonious blend of savory ingredients. Generously stacked with layers of tender roasted chicken, crispy bacon, fresh lettuce, ripe tomatoes, and creamy mayo, each bite delivered a symphony of textures and tastes. It was a delicious testament to the kitchen’s skill in creating satisfying and well-executed dishes. The service at Metropolitain Brasserie Restaurant was commendable. The staff members were attentive, friendly, and efficient, ensuring that our dining experience was enjoyable from start to finish. They offered helpful recommendations and promptly attended to our needs, contributing to the overall positive impression of the restaurant. One of the highlights of our evening was the ambiance. Sitting on the patio allowed us to soak up the lively atmosphere of Rideau Street and Sussex Drive. We enjoyed people-watching as passersby strolled along, adding a touch of urban charm to our dining experience. The blend of the bustling surroundings and the relaxed patio setting created a unique and enjoyable ambiance that enhanced our evening. This was my second visit to Metropolitain Brasserie Restaurant, and it certainly won’t be my last. I highly recommend visiting on a summer evening to take advantage of their inviting patio. Whether you’re looking to enjoy a leisurely meal or simply unwind with a refreshing drink, this restaurant offers an enticing combination of delectable cuisine, attentive service, and a vibrant atmosphere. Embrace the spirit of Paris in the heart of Ottawa at Metropolitain Brasserie Restaurant, and allow yourself to be transported to a world of culinary delight.

Yesterdays experience at Metropolitain Brasserie was disappointing. The weather accommodated outdoor dining which was a treat, sadly the food and service were not. Our server was polite enough but seemingly swamped. We started with a brunch caesar which at $7.50 is a deal. I would rather pay a few more dollars for one that was in keeping with todays standards, this one was not. I ordered the vegetarian wrap and ate it because I was hungry, not because it tasted good. The tortilla seemed stale and dry, the fillings lacked flavour, the fries and salad were good. Two of the others ordered eggs benedict ( one salmon, one standard) and when they were served I was quite surprised to see the potatoes looked like pre-fab frozen hashbrowns. One person had the mussels and fries and said they were very good. Our server stopped by once or twice to check on us. We might have been interested in cappucino/dessert however it had been too long by the time our server came to ask and we were more than ready to go. One final annoyance was shortly after I sat down I noticed a big mark of something gross on my white jeans. I showed the server who briefly looked at my chair and saw nothing. I went to the washroom to try to wash it off but there were no paper towels. Once they were brought to me I was able to clean my pants well enough. When I got back to the table I noticed the food ground into my chair which had transferred to my clean white jeans. I pointed it out to the server after I switched the chairs but he did not seem so interested. So, yes this place has a great location & atmostphere, sadly the food and service average at best. For me this is no longer acceptable based on what it costs to dine out these days.

Horrible experience at this terrible tourist trap resto. Don’t let the 4.2 review fool you. This place was a disappointment from the moment we arrived. Made a reservation for 3 and a 4th joined us. The very rude female front end host (with glasses) was actually upset that she had to add another menu to our table. She said and I quote “I’ll have to change tables now!” when there were only 4 seater tables available. She then insisted there was no dining inside despite me seeing multiple tables eating and drinking carelessly. I should have left right then and there but didn’t want to upset the rest of our party so we sat down. We had a nice Aussie waiter and that’s about the only thing that was positive about the entire experience as the food was terrible! Ordered escargots and the cheese had hardened and the dish was cold it was left so long. Ordered the seafood tower and it was the worst rubbery previously frozen seafood experience I’ve ever had in my life. It included shrimp cocktail with no cocktail sauce, Oysters with no horseradish, and they even forgot the the lobster claws which was added mid way though our meal. I may not be French, but I do know that this is not a true Brasserie by any means and would be an embarrassment to any French or French Canadian I know. Please save your money and avoid at all costs!

The first impression after being seated was that this restaurant appeared tired and somewhat unsure of it’s identity: casual-fine dining, offering French cuisine, or very casual, dated, mixed menu family diner.  The prices suggest the former, the atmosphere/experience suggest the latter. Service was prompt and pleasant, and cocktails were tasty. Appetizer choice on this occasion was the charcuterie board, which came with the recommendation of the server as being plentiful.  This was terribly disappointing.  Poor meat and cheese selection, random other offerings, crostini that was horribly brittle, and perhaps most inexcusable was mustard and jelly being served in paper cups.  For this price, that is unacceptable. The main courses were quite good, I had the rabbit confit, and it was packed with flavour and juicy. There is so much potential based on location and menu, but quite disappointing overall.  I won’t be returning.

After an awkward interaction with what seemed to be the manager on duty when we arrived for our reservation, he seemed very annoyed that we wanted to eat inside instead of the patio, even though there were many tables open inside and we were told we’ve have to wait for the patio (even though we had a reservation..). After that we were seated and had a lovely meal. We had a couple questions for our server but she informed us she was new and had to ask a couple of coworkers for some the answers but was SO lovely it didn’t bother us one bit. The food was amazing. We had an oysters to start followed by the seafood tower, an incredible beef tartar, French onion soup and the lobster ravioli. (The ravioli was the only thing that wasn’t amazing, everything else was superb).

This is my favourite restaurant in Ottawa. For an upscale place where you can be dressy or dress down, the prices are very reasonable while the food quality is the best in Ottawa in my opinion. They have halibut here. They have fancy vegetarian and vegan dishes that are absolutely delicious. The staff are classy and quite frankly all attractive. In the summer, their patio is great for people watching and is comfortable. The only downside of this place is finding parking nearby. I tend to park at the mall nearby and walk.

I went with my partner to Metropolitain to celebrate our anniversary. We ordered a seafood platter and some drinks. The oysters, tuna and the mussels were amazing. The drinks were ok - nothing special. The location is nice and we were able to enjoy a nice time outside on the patio. Only downside is that the seafood platter took almost an hour to arrive, by which time we already finished our drinks and we were just waiting around. We were going to order more but we were ready to leave after the wait. Nevertheless we had a good time.

Designed and styled with a Parisian bistro feel, Metropolitan is an indoor and large outdoor terrace just steps from the parliament buildings and under the shade of the renown. We sat outside under a beautiful spring afternoon sun...enjoying the weather and protestors (this is Ottawa after all). For our meals we ordered Charcuterie Board (quite a large serving and enjoyable), Frisee Salad Lyonaise (tasty), Le Club Sandwich (also good), Fish & Chips (good), and Baked Oysters (tasty). Service was good but the meal took longer than we felt it should have given it was being lunch and dinner with the restaurant not very busy. Other than that it was very nice to seat outside and enjoy good food with good weather. Enjoy!

Visited Metropolitain and few times before, I find the service has gone down, from hostess which did not know what she was doing. A table cloth would be a good idea since the table (inside) looks like has seen better days. It seems that it has become a "tourist" place, overall a dissapointing experience. Received an email from them asking about my experience, responded in detail, never contacted back. Better places to go and spend my money !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Great ambience. The buzz is lively, relaxed, fun. Never been disappointed with the servers. Attentive. The food, however, is always disappointing and tonight was no exception. We know (our server told us years ago) that many, if not all, of the sauces are from a bottle. It tastes it. Some of the recipes consist of weird combos. Strong cheese with lobster ravioli? Bread was stale, chilled cocktail was warm…all very disappointing. But we love the ambience and the wait staff so much we will continue to go and recommend you do too! Just have realistic expectations.

I had a great experience at this restaurant! The location is perfect and the atmosphere is lovely. The staff were friendly and welcoming, which added to the overall experience. I highly recommend trying the oysters - they were delicious and the sauces were the perfect complement. The cocktail selection was impressive and I can't wait to try more. I ordered the steak frites and it was cooked to perfection, and the fries were fresh and crispy. For dessert, I had the flourless chocolate cake and it was rich and decadent. I will definitely be coming back to this restaurant and recommending it to others!

The overall decor and setting is nice, but service quality was poor, and mainly food quality was low. We ordered a Coquille St Jacques and Blanquette de Saumon. Both were low-quality and with lack of seasoning. The Coquille's scallops were good, but the potatoes and spinach were tasteless. Just adding butter and salt would have made it better. The salmon was dry and under-seasoned. We also ordered glasses of sparkling wine, that tasted like from bottles left open for two+ days. Really any cheap prosecco from LCBO tastes better than that.

Booked here for Father’s Day brunch, we always pass by and love the atmosphere with the outdoor seating and fairy lights.. it was a gloomy day so lights were on :) our server was a 10! Seriously super kind and helpful , my kids smiled every time she came to the table because of her kindness. We we’re happy they had kids meals and even the regular dishes they were so flexible to add things or omit others! Over all we had a very pleasant brunch here and would love to come back for another meal where they have live entertainment outdoor!

The service here is A+! The waitress was really accommodating and made our first visit really special and nice. We had arrived past the dinner cut off time but she was still really accommodating to the food we can still order. She checked up on us regularly to make sure we were having a good time and that we had everything we needed. The oysters were really good! The escargot was delicious, the calamari was great and the sweet potato was delicious! All the sauces used complimented the food really well. The jumbo shrimps were also very delicious . We had a really nice meal and experience here! Also I need to mention that the washrooms smell heavenly haha!

Went with a group of 3 for Sunday brunch. Found it very easy to make a reservation over phone and provide contact tracing information. Love the spot and live music, and enjoyed being under the gazebo even with the light rain. The service was great, and was easy to get coffee refills. However, I must make a mention of the food. It was tasty but I’m not sure worth the price point - you are paying for the ambience and location. Not only did the server forget my toast with my steak frites (hence why it’s not in the picture), the portions are a little small. I also found it strange how they provided the inedible end of the pineapple.

My husband were in town for a march and wanted to find a place for lunch. This place did not disappoint! The patio is beautiful and reminds you of a French bistro. We got the seafood tower and it was delicious. The snow crab didn’t taste fresh, but the rest of the seafood was delicious. We liked the mix of seafood and different items. We split the ribeye Cobb salad. It was rich and delicious! I especially liked the poach egg, which made a delicious sauce for the salad. The steak was cooked perfectly. This is an awesome place for lunch and an even better patio. I could have done without the wasps, but we really enjoyed our lunch!

  • Painters Plus

As upscaled as this restaurant seems the obiance is quick cute however I would consider going elsewhere for a fancy dinner. This locations is far from fancy but very pricey! Definitely stay clear of calamari which one would think would be crispy and fresh. Not only overly burnt , stringy and not edible. Bread is a $6 charge and.not offered at the start of your dinner. Steaks are not the same oz as on the the menu. Definitely reconsider your evening out.

The Met is an Ottawa landmark. Beautiful old European bistro atmosphere and a big open air terrace make this restaurant a very pleasant spot to spend an evening. The menu is also classic French bistro staples, but don't expect the quality to match the high prices unfortunately. This visit I ordered the oysters and ceviche to start and was disappointed. Ceviche is supposed to be cured in lemon juice, but this had absolutely no lemon or seasoning. It was more like sashimi. I had the Bouillabaisse as a main which was also disappointing considering it was $35. Nothing was "bad", just not up to my expectations.

  • Jesse Reid

To the team at the Met, I just wanted to say a big thank you to you all for providing such a beautiful place for our wedding reception! We couldn’t have wanted anything to go better. Graham was absolutely the best host and made serving everyone there seem so effortless. And the servers were also brilliant and very good at navigating the chaotic mess of all the social butterflies that we guests were. I highly recommend the Met for any dining need, from a walk-in lunch to a wedding party! Thank you, and all the warm feels, Jesse

We were here tonight. Service was terrible and slow. My husband ordered the lobster thermidor, the lobster was so dry and overcooked, we sent it back to the kitchen and the waiter came back saying that we needed to find something else on the menu. 35 mins later, after everybody finished eating my husband finally got his plate. We asked for water 5 times, we never got our water. We also waited too long to pay. The bill was almost $500. It’s a disappointment. I do not recommend and I will not go back.

I ordered the Coquille St. Jacques and I think the Gruyere/Cream mixture was not mixed properly or overcooked. It clumped together on the top forming an inseparable mass which is usually the best part of the dish! My wife had the duck confit which she enjoyed. The bathroom was a mess with an overflowing garbage can which is very authentic for a french bistro, but I expect more from this place.

This is a great place to visit because of the atmosphere and great service but I do think the food needs some improvement. The calamari was extra salt and some aspects of the other dishes I tried lacked flavour. However , someone in my party had a birthday and was given complimentary cake. For the price I pay I demand better tasting food . The cost is similar to fine dining but quality of food is lacking. Can’t say I would return as price and food quality are far from each other. Portion size could be larger as well.

First of all the location is great, lots of parking around. The design looks magical. The staff there amazing and the servise great.kids cheeseburger was good ,The meet was very juicy. Steak was cooked perfectly as we asked and I can say it was one of the best steaks that I ever aet. I'm not a big fan of sea food but some times you want to try something new, so I'm very happy that I tried that dish (Bouillabaisse- mussels, shrimp, scallops & fish in tomato saffron broth with rouille and crostini). That place really amazing and great place to come with kids.

Went out with colleagues. The food was alright, the dessert was great. Ordered the duck poutine, the menu made it sound a lot more appetizing than it was. Very salty, two pieces of overcooked duck hidden between burnt and toasted leeks. The Brie was my favourite part of the plate. The drink was also a let down, especially for $15 for only one. Update: gave me food poisoning and was sick for the rest of the day&night

Title: Disappointing Experience. Review: I just visited for the first time, and unfortunately, my experience left me deeply disappointed and frustrated. Upon my arrival, I was shocked to learn that the restaurant staff had labeled me as intoxicated, solely based on my walk, which they deemed as “wobbly.” I was simply taking in the ambience of the place, admiring the beautiful lighting and taking pictures.. Crazy. The picture I took looks great however lol. I regret to say that I cannot recommend.

It has a perfect location: In the heart of Bayward Market and close to Rideau Canal and Parliament. It has both nice indoor sittings and patio. Well, of course patio won't be suitable for winter time in Ottawa. The staff are very nice and pleasant; we had a really good time because of that. We ordered "Martini" for drinks, "Steak Frites" for entrée and "Flourless Chocolate Cake". The steak was perfectly cooked to medium and the fries were fresh. I enjoyed every bite of my meal.

Had our wedding dinner and reception at the Métropolitain end of a July. The food, service, and staff were all exceptional. All of our guests went out of their way to praise the venue. They were accommodating and professional throughout the planning process. Special thanks to Sarah and Crystal who made the booking and planning as easy as possible. I would definitely recommend them for an event or just a nice night out!

We ordered a sandwich and I like how they put brie cheese inside to make the taste smooth. The other one we ordered was duck and I really have to say, the duck is crunchy on the outside and juicy inside. Really good. We also ordered French onion soup but wasn’t as good as I expected. The soup can be better, compare to the price ($13) they set on the menu. I hope they can put more onion to make it sweater and put more cheese. Overall it’s delicious. I was not disappointed.

First of all, if you’re a seafood fan, you have to try their oysters! The sauces and horseradish that they come with are an absolute cherry on top. They also have an amazing cocktail selection - I am aiming to try all of them one by one! The food - portions, taste and presentation were top notch. The ambience was great and service was very quick and friendly. Will definitely go back for the oysters, and recommend to my family and friends when they visit from out of town!

TO AVOID!!!! Worst restaurant experience. I found hair in my food not once but THREE times in my sandwich. The hair was eyebrow length and a bit longer and not head scalp length. In the photo, you can clearly see the two hairs with one on the left and the other shorter at the top right in the cheese. This was disgusting. We did not inform the waitress because we had guests with us. However, we will not be back. I am so disgusted.

Had the duck Conti and the moules. They were very good. We ordered the shrimp appetizer special, mesquite grilled shrimp. We thought it was grilled. It turned out it was "chilled" cocktail shrimp. $6 for four 16/20 size cocktail shrimps was a rip off. It wasn't even good. We were disappointed.

We went as family with 2 young kids and were surprised about the friendliness of the staff, very kid friendly, even with a little election game. The food was very good - the calamari were perfectly prepared. And I had a lot of bad ones over the years... Pretty decent wine list by the glass - following the scheme of French bistros. Overall a bit overpriced in my mind and lacking the final touch to give 5 stars.

  • R. Desmond

This is quite the fine french dining I'd love to go back again and again. Food is fantastic and if your budget allows it. Check the prices online and write down what you want to order, and hand it to the staff when you arrive. This seems to be the new BS norm, something to do with menu touching and handing out your paper order actually makes no difference. Lol. Anyhow you will enjoy the food here.

This place has an amazing morning breakfast, the staff was number 1 and the food was perfectly presented. If you are Im Ottawa this is a must place to stop and eat. I don’t usually give very many five stars because there is always room for improvement, but this place really impressed me, from the time we got there to the time we left, never felt rushed to leave after we were done eating.

Fabulous, amazing variety. Had dinner with colleagues, everyone enjoyed the experience. The options on the menu we’re surprising and unique. Personally had a scallop crudo & the bacon wrapped monkfish, absolutely amazing. Others had braised lamb, baked and fresh oysters, duck confit… Just an amazing menu. Great wine list and local craft beers. This is a must try spot in downtown Ottawa.

Fun French style menu, with escargot, oysters, frites, and a charcuterie board. I’ve been here many times and the food never disappoints. Cute atmosphere inside and outside in the courtyard. Equally as cute during the summer and winter months, with white ferry lights up year round. Great people watching spot too, since it’s in the corner of one of the busiest spots in Ottawa.

We wanted to support a local small restaurant as we’re able to dine in restaurants again. Chantel was absolutely lovely, who recommended two tasty cocktails to accompany our French onion soup on a chilly day, and the soup was delicious. The interior decor is charming of a typical French bistro. I highly enjoyed an afternoon lunch at the Metropolitan.

This was a good restaurant to try out. It is not a place we'd likely go a second time because there was nothing that really made it stand out but it was a nice evening. Nice menu with many pub style foods and upscale pub foods available. Everything was made well and the servers were fantastic.

An Ottawa-bubble staple for politicos - and the average person too! The place is great for a bite and a drink after work, staff always friendly and interesting drinks among the classics. Always someone or something interesting going on at the Met - the East-est block of parliament!

My server Michael was great. Very friendly and informative. The food was decent but not totally as advertised. Was still flavorful. I would return.

The food on NYE menu was great! Atmosphere not so great and felt very rushed to get in and get out. The tables were crammed together and the ladies next to us had a hard time squeezing through to leave. Was served the soup course and waited about 5 minutes for our spoons.

I was expecting more. The food was just okay and the staff seemed to be more interested in talking to each other than serving customers

Love it. Great for breakfast, brunch and dinner. Their eggs benny is cooked to perfection with a creamy hollandaise sauce and the pancakes are light and fluffy. The portions are fairly large. Hill hour is great for after work cocktails, oysters and jumbo shrimp.

  • Rachel Kreft

Still a fave but it is unfortunate the charcuterie platter has fallen foul to shrinkflation - can't believe there isn't even any pâté on it any more :( Food tastes delicious and service yet again was amazing.

Service was great, Michael our server went above and beyond. The dishes were expensive for food I felt didn't match. They don't skimp on the fries, so if that's your thing, go for it.

It was a Very pleasant experience. I really enjoyed my duck, that had an amazing sauce served with it. As a side the sweet potatoes were a nice addition. Beer was flavorful as well. Overall a very good restaurant in the centre of Ottawa, really worth visiting.

The food was good. But for a weekday in the city to wait 45 minutes during lunchtime for a sandwich (steak) is way too long. The server did not take attention to us and it was complicated to have water.

Food was great only issue I had was very pricey for the morning menu. Don't go if all you want is some eggs . I ended up getting a big meal as it was only a bit more in price in order to get value out of my meal. At these prices coffee should be Included.

Delicious food and great location too! Chantal is the one who assisted me today and make me happy just by her smile and vibe. I hope they could also put someone infront (front staff) with the same energy and accommodating vibe like Chantal. …

We just happened to come across the Metropolitan and it was a great find. We had a late breakfast which was very good. I had the avocado scramble and my wife had the waffle with fruit and both were very good. Service was great and our

Overall quite satisfied didn't know what to expect but it's a very interesting menu. Food was relatively fast and quality was good. It was a great experience. Would come back to try other dishes.

French taste in Ottawa! This place was so great that I went twice in two days! Their poutine is the best I have ever tried in Canada! My omelette was perfect. I would eat here everyday if I could!

  • Andrew Asgar

The food is really tasty ( I'd recommend the steak sandwich) but most of the the service was amazing. Yuna was phenomenal and went above and beyond! I would highly recommend.

Great location, specially for events. Our servers were awesome. Basically everything was great and the only complaint is, the food could be more flavourful. Good experience.

Nice bistro atmosphere and very delicious dishes. Only downside is the price. Very pricey I found. But worth the treat once in a while. Love the outside terrace area.

We enjoyed a nice dinner at Metropolitan Brasserie a restaurant which could have been lifted from Paris. The steak frittes were good and the service Canada friendly.

  • Lucy B

Great service, food was not really good. Took way to long to get our order. Expansive hot chocolate made with powder and water and only tasted like warm water.

  • Daniela Avila

This is the perfect restaurant for a romantic evening or a cold winter day. The food is both classic and comforting. Loved the steak frites!
