Only 50 metres from the waterfront, this is a tourist attraction and conservation project designed to teach people about Masons Antarctica expedition. It is a replica of one of the huts constructed by Douglas Mawson and his team on the expedition. On the day we visited, there was a fabulous volunteer in the hut telling us heaps of information and stories about the expedition and she was very interested. $15 for adults, $12 for concession and $5 for children to enter. Money goes to preserving the original huts in Antarctica.

The museum itself is good, more for adults than kids. One thing that ruined our visit was a volunteer who talked incessantly at us. We had no chance to actually look at things, talk amongst ourselves or read. The volunteers are well meaning, but need to answer questions not lecture. It’s a very small room and we had no respite or chance to just explore on our own. We only got a break when more people came in and got ambushed with the same spiel we had copped for 15 minutes. They looked as fed up as we did.

Took my kids 13 & 9 to discover the incredible feat that these young men endured in the name of science and glad I did. The staff were informative and cross referencing displayed photos with the replica hut gave a great perspective for the kids. They were interested in the stories from Marion who was a friendly staffer happy to raise interesting facts. I’d recommend it.

It's a great replica of the actual hut with many original items and a lot of interesting information. When we were there a gentleman named Rod with 40 Antarctic expeditions under his belt was volunteering and sharing his wealth of knowledge and engaging stories. The museum is a not for profit venture to help raise funds to protect the actual hut in Antarctica.

Fantastic experience, to see how those early expeditioners battled the elements to etch out their place in history is phenomenal. Great detail in the building, some great original pieces inside and just fantastic to look back at yesteryear, touch feel and see how they lived. I personally was surprised at how young the majority of the expedition party were.

I have been meaning to visit this museum on my last two visits to Hobart and finally made it. Spent two hours here (it didn't feel like that long) reading and absorbing all the information and the atmosphere. Spoke with two knowledgeable volunteer guides who were able to explain a good deal about some of the equipment contained within the replica hut. Very much recommend if you are interested in our Antarctic expeditions and exploration.

Anyone with only a passing interest in the exploration of Antarctica will find this a very interesting and informative way to spend 45 minutes or so when visiting the Hobart waterfront. Plenty of fascinating exhibitions to see along with a good selection of items to purchase from the gift shop. Excellent staff to answer any questions you may have.

Very interesting walkthough, with a heap of information and artifacts along the walls. Tim was great, showing us pictures of the current hut condition and conservation efforts to save it. The radio was very interesting even finding out that they could receive messages but not transmit out. The display feels like you are standing back in history.

Mawson's Hut Replica museum manages to evoke the spirit and atmosphere of the real site and makes you feel the stark heroism that simply comes with enduring such, at times, savage conditions. It isn't large, but its creatively and sensitively organised and brings together the awe of the endurance of these early Antarctic explorers and a fascination with the technology and precious home comforts - and fellowship - that sustained them.

Well worth the visit if you've got a spare afternoon in Hobart. Fantastic replica and displays capture the intrepid spirit of the expedition. Read about the tremendous challenges these scientists faced and the triumph of the human spirit. The volunteers are very knowledgeable and more than happy to answer questions.

Didn't know a thing about the Antarctica expedition unless someone mentioned it to us at Hobart which prompted us to go to this museum. Learnt about the bravery of the men and the hardships they had to go through. The staff and volunteers were very friendly and explained the minute details to us. You will be amazed with the details surrounding this hut and the people.

Nice little museum outlining experiencing of Antarctic explorers. The entry fee was a bit expensive at $15. Although the quality of the museum is quite good, not sure if it's completely worth it. I'd recommend it to people who a preexisting interest into Antarctic exploration, but otherwise it might be best to give it a miss. Leave at least 1hr to properly explore.

Didnt manage to make a proper visit as the museum was closed by the time we got there. But read the information boards displayed outside and it is interesting to learn about Australia’s antarctic history, wish we could come back next time when we are in Hobart, it is just a short walk from the piers and Salamanca market. Entrance free is $15 / head.

A great place for adults and children alike.

A brilliant, thoughtful, well-documented and presented replica of Mawson's Hut, complete with Frank Hurley's famous photographs and detailed biographies of all crew. Plan to spend nearly two hours here. I highly recommend a visit to Tasmania's Museum and Art Gallery to spend two hours in their excellent Antarctica exhibit as well. Just wonderful !

The experiences and hardships of those brave explorers who established the bases in Antarctica is simply astonishing. Building an un-insulated shack in which houses 18 men in perpetual frozen darkness, while 300km/r winds carrying shards of ice wear away anything in its path - this replica of their living quarters / survival bunker is a must see!!

Although I feel that the admission costs is too high, certainly worth a visit. Knowledgeable and very friendly volunteer staff that are very willing to share their enthusiasm of the "not so well known" incredible explorer of the Antarctic. Informative and interesting displays, including actual footage taken of the expedition. Allow 2 hours.

Good and small museum to understand the history of Australians to explore the unkown Antarctic Continent. The entrance fee will be used to maintain the real Mawson's Hut. In the museum, you can read the stories and the diary to feel the tough environment and how much pain the team had suffered. Worth visiting when you come to Hobart.

My husband loves anything about Antarctic exploration. I don't like the cold. But this was really great, a replica of a hut decorated from photos of the original, there is a basket sitting on a beam because there was one in the photo etc. So many little details, like the menu on the wall...not penguin again? Well worth a visit.

The admission is fair ($15) and goes entirely towards the conservation and restoration of the original huts in Antarctica. There’s a lot of information about Antarctic expiration and Hobart’s role in it! There’s also a good amount of artifacts on display as well. Worth the visit if you’re into that sort of thing

Google asked for a review.. I was at the site of this replica, but did not go in.. I probably would have if the admission price was not as high as it is.. The history board on the property and adjacent to the building was pretty interesting to read through.. Loved the sculptures located near the building....

An excellent and fitting tribute to one of Australia's most iconic expedtioners . An inspiring collection of recreated events, experiences and objects. Tools and utensils form an integral part of the museum's exhibits. You feel as if you've experienced a small part of the nation-changing, heroic adventure.

The cost for adults was $15.00 each for the size of the building and what was there . i could not justify the cost i think better of buying a book on mawson hut. We were there on antartic week end august 2022 i think it should have been free entry .but it was good fund raiser for the mawson foundation's.

Very interesting! Its definitely worth a visit. There are lots and lots of stories to read - but if that’s not your thing you can just admire the amazing level of detail to which they replicated the original hut. The gift shop also has some things that are actually worth buying, for affordable prices.

This was an unexpected find that ended up being the highlight of my weekend in Hobart. I was blown away by the history held here, and the wealth of wisdom and stories that the volunteer staff had. Highly recommend!

Felt like I was really there. (Well, not really but the howling wind sound effect made me feel chilly!) Allow an hour to read the personal life descriptions of those intrepid explorers and how things worked out for them The inner area is full of artefacts and very knowledgeable volunteer staff.

If you are interested in the history of Antartica, well worth a visit. Take the time to read all the stories, absorb and consider the achievements and what the men and dogs experienced. May seem small and not that great if the topic does not already interest you before going in.

This is a good little exhibition of what Mawson's hut on Antarctica was like. Very helpful, knowledgeable staff. This is about an hour for people the really like history. Would not recommend for little kids as they will be board and asking when it will be over the whole time.

I was hesitant to visit as it looks so small from the outside but it is quite big. Full of interesting facts and knowledge, lots of things to learn. It is a bit pricey but if you become a friend and live in Tasmania your next visits with your friends you enter for free.

Interesting and well made reproduction of Mawson’s hut. I spent about an hour there which was quite enough for me. It is a small space and felt a little crowded at times with the other visitors. Definitely worth a visit if you are interested in Antarctic history.
