After seeing Simon Mortimer's glowing review, we knew this would be something quite special. Immediately we booked the first flight from Australia (spending our last pennies), and once we touched down in Sofia and were within 50km of the statue, we were overwhelmed by the magical feeling in the air. Now penniless and unable to afford a taxi or even bus, we trekked from airport to shovel man and our hearts started to race, faster, faster, faster. And oh how good it was. A stranger took this photo and my friend, not pictured, is off to the side having died of an excitement-induced heart attack. Thank you Simon. You unknowingly changed our lives. RIP Katie.

After reading twelve 5 star reviews, this was a must do on our city break to Sofia. My wife wanted to see some churches, but with my eye on the prize, man with shovel (and paper and pencil) was located, well worth the 90 seconds of my life it took too. Thoroughly recommended.

I came to Sofia just to see this statue (being a lover of shovels) We got up early (4am) to avoid the rush and we're so glad we did! Avoided the crowds and really got to appreciate "man with shovel" I can see us coming back every year...

If you enjoy the thought of a very handsome young man holding a shovel, I think you will dig this. Well worth the 20 minute walk it took to get there.

As Mark Twain once said: “When everyone is looking for gold, it’s a good time to be in the pick and shovel business”. This sculpture is clearly ahead of its time. Amazing piece of art. Worth the long the queue.

After reading all the great reviews, we had to come see this statute. I think it’s a depiction of god and I can see ourself starting a religion in honour of Man With Shovel.

Went in with high expectations… and it still blew me away. If you have a hole to fill on your trip this is a must see!!

The shovel maketh the man. He also has a pencil and notepad for counting how many shovelfuls. Really impressive.
