I never had Lao food before even I have had been living in Asia all my life. We came here on a Wednesday afternoon for lunch before we went to see our show at the KitKat club. The restaurant is not very far away from Monument station. The restaurant it’s very clean and stylish decor. There are bar tables and regular dining tables. We didn’t have any reservations so we were seated at the bar table. Manuel is very comprehensive, introducing how many dishes you should order. We were too, so we ordered one plain sticky rice, one pork fried noodles, one portion of barbecue sausage and one bamboo shoot salad. For two girls, they were about the right quantity. The food strikes me first as northern Thai food. The sausages taste, a little bit sour and in the very unique way. You can eat it with mint leaf, coriander and chilli pepper. It was really tasty. The sticky (gluten rich) plain rice tastes like Chinese Zong Zi, it is very soft with a good texture. It goes very well with the bamboo shoots salad. Although it says it is salad, the bamboo shoots, it’s actually a hot dish. The sauce is full of mint leaves, different spices. Very yummy. The bamboo shoots is very crunchy. The fried vimcilimi is full of sweet sauce, the pork on top is well marinated, which is also good to go with rice. There are staffs at the shop front, they seem very busy but also very attentive. I asked for chilli powder and fresh chilli, they brought me what I asked for and kept refilling our water. If you like south East Asian food, don’t miss out.

Food, environment, atmosphere, all great. Service, not so much. We had a reservation, for three, I arrived the earliest and decide to take seat first and wait for my other friends. The staff is reluctant to bring me in despite me reassuring her that my friends will come within 10 minutes. Many restaurants do have rules like that which is understandable, however it is the attitude that bothers me. You distrust your customers and literally pushing them away? They are even taking walk-ins at the moment so it is not like our 3 seats are desperately needed for other potential customers. After we are seated, service is a bit slow as the restaurant is full and they don’t have enough staff. The food on the contrary, is amazing. Grilled fish has scales, but grilled to a crunchy texture, quite special! Laos papaya salad has salted raw crab. It’s unique yet too salty. Fermented sausage is a very unique dish too, I’ve never seen in other southeast Asian restaurants. Fried rice noodles, aromatic, cooked perfectly. Milk teas are ok, a bit too sweet for my taste.

Visited Lao Cafe twice. Last year and a visit recently. The noodles were a disappointment compared to the first visit and very different. I can understand the vegetables in the noodles are seasonal eg the greens and carrots but the taste was different. First visit, the noodles had strong salty sweet flavours and they were dark brown in colour. Second visit, both the saltiness and sweetness was mild and it tasted like those stir fried noodles from a Chinese place. Although the noodles were not good. The curry saved the day even though it wasn't at its optimal visual presentation. From past visits, the dill was garnished on top but today it was submerged in the soup. The dill and basil flavours were amazing. When I ordered the khao gee, I figured the guy didn't hear I wanted the crispy rice because he asked if it was glutinous rice. Anyway, the last gripe was the table booking which requires your birthday and postcode which I find rather personal.

I recently had the pleasure of dining here, and I must say, it was an exceptional experience. From the moment I stepped through the door, I was greeted with a warm and welcoming atmosphere. The restaurant had a cozy and inviting ambiance that immediately made me feel comfortable. The staff were all very friendly and accommodating. Lao Cafe offers an authentic dining experience with delicious dishes that satisfy cravings for lao cuisine. The food is flavorful and prepared with expertise, leaving a lasting impression. The menu includes must-try options like the Tom Sac Hotpot and Papaya Salad, both of which deliver on taste and satisfaction.

Cozy Lao/Thai restaurant with interesting dishes you won’t find elsewhere such as the papaya salad. I’ve heard from people with good authority that this is one of the better Lao/Thai restaurants in London. The menu is not very large but had a nice selection of non-meat items also such as the whole roasted fish which was cooked pretty well. The pork neck was smokey and had a great texture. I ordered the mushroom curry but it wasn’t really my favourite thing I tried here. I could imagine that some people would either love this restaurant or for others it might just be alright. I had 4 mains and 1 side, no drinks coming to a total of just under 80 pounds. Not a cheap eat but by no means super expensive for London either given it’s location.

As soon as you walk in you smell fish sauce which to me is a good sign when walking into an South East Asian restaurant. We ordered an array of dishes including some I didn’t capture like the soup, which completely surpassed my expectations. The thai milk tea was superb. The fried chicken was unreal (standout dish), crispy, fresh and so savoury. We ordered 2 portions. The som tum was excellent and so was the warm liver dish. The only disappointment was the long wait for the food, I guess it’s a small kitchen with one a single chef preparing multiple dishes but as we were hungry it felt like forever having to wait for the food. The service on the other hand was friendly, professional and welcoming. We’ll be back.

Had a recommendation to try Lao Cafe. First time trying Laotian cuisine and we were looking forward to it. We didn't book and Covent garden was busy so we weren't optimistic about getting a table but we were welcomed into a cosy restaurant with an unfussy atmosphere which we like. We weren't disappointed, the food was delicious. Grilled fish was perfect, stir fried prawn noodles sweet and savoury, sticky rice in banana leaf and a Laotian papaya salad with mini crabs adding flavour that was like nothing I had tasted before. I always want to try something different when we're away and I can genuinely say this was and we thoroughly enjoyed it. Really lovely place.

Disappointed. While the food was okay, the portion size for the price was quite small for this price. The service, despite a 12.5% service fee, was lacking. It felt like there was hardly any attention given to our table. What disappointed me more was being charged higher than the marked price. We noticed this when we got home and immediately called the restaurant. Their explanation was that there had been a price change, but they forgot to update the prices on the wall. While they did transfer the difference back to us, the experience of being charged a different price than what was clearly displayed was disheartening. Transparency matters.

We stopped in here purely by chance on my partner's birthday. It's favourite food is Isaan and we were both amazed by how fantastic the food was here. The menu isn't massive, but every dish we ordered was delicious and not anglicised for the western palette. We live 2 hours away, but are already planning our next trip into London so that we can take friends and try some of the dishes we didn't order on our first trip. The hot and sour hotpot actually brought tears to my partner's eyes and he said "it tastes like home. " a week later and we're still talking about how wonderful the food was.

Lao Cafe is an excellent introduction to Laos cuisine in London. I really love their spicy Papaya Salad, Grilled Pork Neck, and Spicy Sour Pork Ribs. If you like spicy and flavorful dishes (think a mix of Thai and Vietnamese cuisine) you will probably like the dishes at Lao Cafe as well. It helps that it’s in a central location and it’s also quite affordable.

The food was tasty but way too expensive for what it is. I appreciate you pay a premium at London restaurants but paying over £3 for a can of Diet Coke, £9 for 2 small sausages & over £11 for a Lao-style papaya salad, spoils the experience for me. I have given 4 stars since the food was tasty and the staff were friendly. I would not visit here again as there are other authentic Thai / Asian style restaurants in London that charge more reasonable prices for food just as tasty. Overall a disappointing dining experience.

Too expensive for what it is - 40 Pounds for 3 dishes, one sticky rice and a tap water. Perhaps.., the place is located at/closed to the prime area of London. The grill pork jaw is burn - way too burn. Maybe this is because it is needed a palm sugar or a kind to marinate before char grill. So the sugar make it burn easily. I am not sure but they might substitute the yard long beans with green bean, making it smell green. The spicy and sour soup is perfect. To be fair all dishes taste nice. But it is definitely not a much to try. Staffs here are professional and attentive though.

  • Bruce

I wouldn’t come here if you’re very hungry. We left a bit disappointed as we were still hungry after spending over £70 on food (for 2 people). However the food was nice and the staff were lovely. Only complaint is that the bottom of one of our sticky rice was crispy so we could barely eat it. Due to the price and meal size unfortunately I won’t be returning as there are other Thai places that offer similar food for a more reasonable price.

Lao Café really hits the spot for when you're craving dishes such as Som Tam (spicy papaya salad), Grilled pork neck and Sticky rice. Their Pork rib hotpot tastes spicy and sour and very comforting with the pork being nice and tender. Only complaint would be that the Milky iced tea comes with a lot of ice and therefore it feels like you've finished the drink in a few gulps. They strike the right balance between nice flavours and a casual as well as welcoming atmosphere. Prices are adjusted to London standards and central location which is understandable.

  • YeaJi Kang

Worst restaurant. We ordered Vermicelli Stir Fry with Prawns. It tasted like it has been microwaved. Some parts were hot, and some parts were cold. The fried eggs were soggy (1st pic) and the noodles were stuck together (2nd pic). We complained that it feels like it has been microwaved not freshly cooked. The restaurant said they don’t microwave but they fry on wok. If it was fried on a wok, every part should have been warmed. Worst food and service.

DO NOT EAT HERE. Poor service and unfriendly staff and bad food. I ordered salad and stressed “mild” but it was so spicy I couldn’t eat it. Waiter said obviously it has lots of chilli in it, but the menu didn’t say chilli at all and I specifically said “mild”. He was rude and refused to do anything or give refund. Also v expensive for poor food - Thai Pot around the corner much much better .

Nice place to have some Lao or E san food in my view. I have ordered Pla Paw Klue, Tub wan and Moo ping. The taste of tub wan and moo ping were good as it should but Pla pow should be more seasoning on dipping sauce not just only spicy . For Thai milk tea just need more milk to make it more tasty. The price was reasonable price.

Great food, super flavourful, fresh and exciting. Go with friends and share a couple plates. We were three and had a papaya salad, a grilled meat, a dry salad, a hot pot, a noodle dish and a rice and we were happily full and spent 27£ each, so great value! Service was initially slow, but once food started arriving all was smooth. Will definitely be coming again.

Maybe our expectations of Lao food were wrong, but we sadly couldn't finish our meal and left hungry. The chicken wings were mostly skin and bone; for £9 you get one sausage; and the rest of our dishes (despite asking for medium) were almost unbearably spicy. It's a shame as we're adventurous eaters and were keen to try this place but won't be coming back.

We came for a quick dinner before a show and between the four of us, we shared the deep-fried chicken wings, the chargrilled pork skewers, fermented Lao sausages, tum Thai (papaya salad), prawn pad mee Lao (vermicelli noodles) and laab moo (minced pork). All the dishes packed a punch in flavour and were really tasty. The service was also very efficient.

Came here for dinner around 8pm. Service was fast and efficient, food was amazing! Loved both versions of the papaya salad; nuts and salted eggs made for a very interesting taste profile. This was my first time having Laotian cuisine. I really enjoyed the chargrilled pork neck dry salad. Caution - the salad was pretty spicy and I think we ordered mild! Warning! When they say mild, it’s still insanely spicy. Skipping that particular issue (which tbh it’s a preference) I had the salt cooked fish and it was deliciously tender. The sticky rice was excellent, and I wish I could do that at home. For the majority of the dishes they are quite spicy.

Landlocked Laos has vastly different cuisine to its neighbours like Vietnam. The spicy curry, without coconut milk comes with ant eggs and a great variety of mushrooms. As I’ve never had Laotian cuisine I can’t compare to the original, but the papaya salad is like nothing I had before. A worthy visit for the moderate price of around £25 per person.

A really good find in an area with lots of tourist eats. Laotian cuisine is chilli hot so be careful what you tell your server what you can take. The food is top quality and each dish brings its own personality. It’s all about sharing so you get to balance the big flavours. The service is good, but you have to be assertive as they’ll leave you to it.

This is the place to be for spicy food that is bursting with flavours. Come in and have a taste and I can assure that you will be addicted. For those who are not so fond of spiciness, you can definitely let the staff know your tolerance level and they will adjust accordingly. Book in advance if you don’t want to wait in line during peak period.

Great place! I recommend the curry, but I don’t recommend the rice, it’s so tasteless. Service is nice!

Came for dinner today and wasn’t sure what to expect as never had Laotian food. Was excited to try new things. The menu says they recommend 2 salads and 2 mains, so looking at other people’s photos, we decided on the grilled pork neck

I recently dined at Lao Cafe and had an excellent experience. I ordered the stir fry noodle dish and was impressed with the authentic and flavorful taste. The staff were also very friendly and attentive, making for a pleasant dining

Great food and atmosphere. The hot pot is a must have. Portions are plentiful and the menu is varied. 9/10 would recommend.

Authentic and delicious Laos/Thai food. Food can be quite spicy by default so , if you cannot handle handle too much spice , let the staff know. My favorite was the liver spicy salad and the papaya salad. Would go back for sure

Outstanding Lao/Issan food. Had a delicious and spicy mean. The Sai Krok Issan sausage - sour, pungent and plenty of chilli - excellent. The Pork larb also excellent. Great service. I will return when in London next...

Good food and portions but I had to knock a couple of points because my colleague's soup and sticky rice turned up 15 mins before my salad, and I had to chase......otherwise a really lovely place....... More

Amazing food. I had papaya salad Lao style and their equivalent of pork satay with sticky rice. Incredible tastes. I will definitely go back again.

Best North Eastern Thai/Laotian food in London on my humble view. Amazing food. I can do with more choices of dessert though. :) More
