Jack's Magazine is controlled and operated by Heritage Victoria. Dating back to the late 1800s the site was a bonded store for black powder and later other explosives right up to the 1960's. The site has remnants of tramways and remnants of a canal outside giving a glimpse of how material was moved around the site. There are two main magazines which are within depressions to limit the disaster should one of the stores have exploded. The magazine buildings are intriguing blue stone construction of amazing workmanship. I'd love to live in one of these because even on the hottest days they're cool inside. The tour guides are friendly and knowledgeable volunteers. Many of whom have worked on the site when it was active. There are interpretive displays in the final building. Much of the site is accessible for most people. Some might be challenged in getting to the top of the bund for the overview of the buildings. I really enjoyed my visit and will likely take a photographic group in.
This is the perfect place to store huge amounts of gunpowder. Classic solid stone designs, miniature railways for gunpowder carts, sloping embankments to direct pesky explosions - it's all here. Get down for a look at the next open day.
