This really deserves better than ☘️☘️☘️ I will definitely try it again. I think I got there on a bad day, and I know those things happen, but these are a bit tough to ignore on the downside. The waitress was not that good. She messed up my order and went disappear-o’ after the first fix request, which never ended up getting resolved. Before that, every time she brought coffee she spilled it on the table. The first time she did it, I thought it was quaint, sort of like a throwback to the hash-slinging-waitress’ in a diner. By the fourth time, we had just had enough. Some of the food was a little undercooked, and the sourdough toast that I ordered was Wonder Bread, and we couldn’t quite get this resolved ‍♂️ Lastly, the condiments on the table were not really well taken care of. All in all, beside the bad service, not killer stuff. This is why I think I will try it again, because there was some really good stuff. First, it’s a huge place so there was no line on a Saturday AM, and it was plenty busy. It was perfect outside on picnic tables, and the day was spectacular. It’s pretty much under the flight path, so, if occasional noise bothers you, this would not be your place. I found it awesome! Planes landing in San Diego come over the roofs so the pilots lay off the gas, and it’s not too noisy. Also, the music they played was fantastic. Everything from Lionel Richie, which reminded me of my dad, whom I miss very much; to The Psychedelic Furs and Counting Crows. The coffee was good, and they had marmalade for the toast. I will definitely come back and see if we can raise the score. I believe they have it in them!

For Saturday morning primetime breakfast, it was plenty of availability on the streets. It’s on a four corner intersection, so there are options in all directions. Some free, mostly metered.
Kid-friendliness
Big place, picnic tables outside, lots of space between the tables. Good rock ‘n’ roll music from above. No real concern of fine dining.
Wheelchair accessibility
Street level; easy in and easy out with plenty of width in every aisle.

Disclaimer - I went here with a group of 12 for breakfast on a Friday and no reservations. There was only a 10 minute wait time to be seated, though I would not recommend showing up with a large group unannounced, unless you like to roll the dice All the food was excellent. There are few breakfast places that I go to where the food is excellent. In this group of 13, everyone loved their food. Those who had not been here before said they would be bringing their spouses back to try it. I ordered the biscuits and gravy. The homemade biscuits are some of the fluffiest, most satisfying biscuits I have had. The gravy was also excellent. I ordered a Bloody Mary to drink and was happy with the flavor and the amount of alcohol in it. The service was excellent and very friendly. The only issue was that it took the larger section of our group an extra 20 minutes of waiting to get their food. But they quickly forgot about the wait time once their food arrived. It's worth the time trying to find parking here!

Update: If you go for happy hour, tell them when entering so they seat you at the bar or in that section. They have a HH burger that has bacon, bbq sauce, and an onion ring like a Carl's Jr. Burger. The Cobb salad was great. The Ruby Slipper made with watermelon juice was delicious, however I had a headache from it later that night. They have a bakery on site and have pastries, cakes, and pies. Friendly bartender and servers. Friendly service, great food, street parking, one bathroom for the whole place. It would be great if they could make it more friendly for those who are hard of hearing. I asked if the music could be turned down and they were cool about it. It would be great if they could have a hook for bags or purses in the bathroom. I had the Cobb Salad and the blue cheese dressing tasted a bit sweet.

The food was SO GOOD and affordable!!! I had my cheat meal and I'm so glad I picked Hob Nob omg. Was looking for salty then sweet. (Breakfast is served all day except for the eggs benedict) and the menus are pretty long but perfect. I knew for sweet I wanted a Belgian waffle but for salty, I couldn't decide. ASK YOUR SERVER IN THIS CASE, MINE WAS ACTUALLY HONEST! Service was excellent btw! I ended up getting the French onion soup and it was the BEST I've ever had not kidding. Ended with the plain Belgian waffle with butter and syrup and I swear my server could read my mind; it was exactly what I wanted. PERFECT!! Will definitely go back! (Pic is of the soup which was HUGE)... Yummy !!! My friend had a sandwich I forgot which but he ate until he was so full and kept going, lol!

We hiked over to the Hob Nob so we could enjoy a hearty meal and plane watch. Our waitress Kelsi was super friendly and provided excellent, balanced service. I had the Hob Nob omelette and my wife had the Waffle Combo. The kitchen easily accommodated my request to have the omelette without green peppers. Along with a piece of delicious crumb cake and hash browns, it was a satisfying breakfast. I finished it off with a strong espresso martini. Perfect! The waffle was excellent, not too doughy or bland. Bacon was crisp and tasty. Eggs over easy were very good. I highly recommend Hob Nob. It’s a local favorite. For any tourists interested — the corner of Hob Nob (1st and Ivy street) is the neighborhood you can get close up to flights going into San Diego airport. It’s a fantastic experience!

Went last Sunday 11/5. It was rough. I had been here before and remembered really enjoying a sandwich. But we came for breakfast this time, and my brother and a good friend had really talked up the chicken fried steak, and the in particular, how good the gravy was. So that is what I ordered. It came out as one of the thinnest dried out pieces of meat with very little gravy and the gravy that was there was really bland. Our group also ordered some of the specialty coffees and some bloody Mary's. The coffees came quickly and were very good. The bloody Mary's were cancelled after 30 mins of waiting for it. Our server was really nice. She was very busy! I don't blame her that is why the stars are listed as three stars. If they were short staffed or something it would have gone a long way if we were informed.

Four stars for attentive and friendly service, hearty portions and delicious homemade food! We had breakfast here and it was great. I had hot herbal tea and the hibiscus mimosa. I wanted a Bloody Mary but they do not have a hard liquor license so theirs is made with wine not vodka. I could not imagine that so I ordered the mimosa, which was delicious. My entree was corned beef hash with scrambled eggs and potatoes; they offer hashbrowns or what they call "O'rien" potatoes, which have onion and green peppers. You also get toast or crumb cake. I chose the latter and it was great! My mother and I also shared wild blueberry pancakes that were perfect. When my food came out there was a hair in my eggs. The waiter took it back promptly and had it prepared again. The ambiance is relaxing. I definitely recommend Hob Nob for a delicious breakfast! It is also peaceful outside the restaurant with beautiful potted succulents.

I always love this Diner! They recently did a renovation which is nice but I have to say the old charming diner was plenty welcoming, felt so homey, and made the food even better. Don’t get me wrong, the food is still very good, the modern upgraded design will take sometime to get used to, still it was tastefully done. There are some wonderful things I love about this place you won’t find that make it unique. They make FRESH squeezed OJ! They have the cutest little loafs of bread, excellent muffins, orange cups of Jam, and cold salad forks! Those are just a few fun things that keep me coming back! I enjoy a cappuccino and they use a fancy cappuccino machine so the consistency is always perfect! I came in today just for a quick snack, I split a club sandwich which hit the spot! Thanks for never disappointing Hob Nob, and for always being the nicest, cleanest diner in town!

We have been eating very happily at Hob Nob Diner on every trip to San Diego for 20 years. In the past the food, service, wait staff, prices and atmosphere have been superb. This year it was a big disappointment. May 31, 2023 we went in for breakfast. No one was at the front desk and we waited and waited before someone finally showed up. No good morning greeting nor apology for our long wait. Sitting at our table we waited again. No coffee, no nothing for a while. Finally a new server comes to take our order. She was friendly enough but not like our usual greetings in the past. The food was excellent. But the prices had gone up dramatically!! $50 later we left without a goodbye of any kind. We very sadly say goodbye to what had been our favorite spot for years.

We stopped in on places that was close to where we were staying in San Diego for breakfast and we were so happy we did. It’s a fun place that likes the Wizard of Oz. It’s entrance is in black and white decor and as you round the corner to the restaurant and bar, there’s a beautiful mural of Dorothy and her friends in bright and vibrant colors on the back wall. The original owner was named Dorothy and they thought it was a good idea to pay tribute with the mural. The food was excellent. I got avocado toast with over easy eggs and the other dish was biscuits and gravy with bacon. We originally chose normal coffee but after reading The Hob Nob Espresso Bar menu, we switched to Hob Nob Hill Signature Coffee. What a fantastic choice. I highly recommend this place for breakfast.

My husband & I & our guests have been coming to this restaurant for over 30 years. We have enjoyed the ambiance, the wait staff, and the very tasty food!! Since the beginning of the Covid-19 shut down we always kept in the back of our minds that this is one of restaurants that once opened again we would most likely visit first. We arrived to a totally remodeled restaurant. It is absolutely gorgeous, updated completely. Very elegant inside & out. A bar area is now included w/ happy hour specials along with specialty cocktails and excellent happy hour menu. Fresh daily menu plans from the chef which are very tasty and delicious. There are still menu items for breakfast, lunch and dinner that are still always in demand as they offer such a variety delicious tasting foods. This is one of the best restaurants in San Diego most definitely!!

  • Teddy Blanco

Hobnob states it's the best since 1944 but it is just typical mom and pop breakfast spotwith an attached bakery with dated decor. Customer service is excellent we were seated quickly our waitress took care of us really well, being that it was our first time she gave us extra goodies like muffins, coffee cake, and peice of pie, and different dressings to try with my salad. The menu was a typical breakfast menu from Chicken and Waffles, omelets and pancakes. Lunch is served here with a variety of different sandwiches. I wasn't overly impressed when I got my food because it was just typical breakfast food nothing really over-the-top caught my attention taste wise. The muffins, coffecake, bisquet s were dry and crumbly. The salad was tasty, the let US was super cold. Omelets are made with beaters.

Finally, made it to this place a week or so ago. I absolutely loved it. The decor was perfect for the area and the vibe they're trying to convey. Service was quick, professional, courteous, and very pleasant. The food was spectacular. I had the chicken and dumplings, and I can't say enough good things about it. Perfect comfort food. I sampled the meat loaf too. Again, it was perfect comfort food. I may order a meatloaf to take home on my next visit. It would make an amazing sandwich the next day. If you haven't already been, go. Go now. If you have been, go again. I know I will, very soon.

This was the second time I've gone at midday, so that could account for some of the slow service, not that much though. My aunt loved what she ate, the others and myself were far less enthusiastic about it. The waitress was angling for a $20 tip by asking me multiple times if I was sure I wanted my change. We had spent far more time waiting for our drinks, then to order and then waiting to pay than we did eating. I still feel the 15% she got was too high. The only highlight that saved it from a completely dismal review was that it was my aunts birthday and she loves being sung happy birthday. They did get that part right.

We had the absolute best experience at Hob Nob Hill diner! The waitress who hosted us, Christa (probably butchering the spelling) was such a warm presence before we embarked on a rainy journey back home. It was my boyfriend's birthday, and not only did she add a candle to a slice of pie, she also joined in on singing happy birthday to the top of our lungs. Any restaurant can serve good food, and this diner is no exception, but the rare characteristic that solidifies this diner as a mainstay favorite is that their team genuinely cares about their customers and our waitress became our best friend for the day. We will be coming back here every single time we go back to San Diego. Bonus picture of the food which really was delectable.

Hob Nob Hill (since 1944!!!) Was one of the best breakfast/ brunch spot ever. I apologize for the half eaten pancake picture since it was so damn delicious! The service is great and they are very very pleasant with all their customers. I had to attend a meeting while at Hob Nob and they not only were ok with it, they took care of me very well. The pancakes were the best I've ever had. Took a chance with the banana foster one, and that just blew my mind. Their fresh squeeze OJ was great as well. The restaurant is very spacious and has a great ambience overall.

This place was very cute and overall I liked it. I was a bit disappointed with the waitress and my bacon stuffed waffle though. The waitress seemed out of it but maybe it's because they were busy. The waffle was kind of flavorless and didn't seem cooked all the way through...like it needed a minute longer in the waffle iron. My older daughter's BLTE was delicious and my little ones pancakes must have been too because she cleared her plate and that never happens. My husband's mocha was fire and so were the mimosas lol...I will go here again...I guess I just had higher hopes because I saw it on Triple D years ago...

On July 3rd, 2023 we visited the Hob Nob, I am very disappointed with this restaurant. The only military or law enforcement discount they offer is that you have to be physically in uniform for the discount. I guess I will pass the word to my fellow veterans and law enforcement partners not to visit this establishment due to the lack of support for our veterans and law enforcement officers. I remember the day when you asked for the discount, and as long you presented your credentials, you received the much appreciated discount, not anymore. Sorry, Hob Nob, you have great food and amazing staff, but you are getting scratched off our list.

A cozy, well established spot to grab a great breakfast. I love diners/old family owned joints, and this place really shows why it’s been around so long (75 years). Almost no wait to be seated at 9 on a Sunday, and super great/friendly service the whole time. Excellent cup of coffee to start, paired with some amazing coffee cake (they get their own roast from a local coffee shop). They make their own corned beef hash in house, so knew I needed to try that - and it’s amazing. Get it with eggs over easy and enjoy. Can’t wait to make this my go to weekend spot!

The staff was AWESOME!!! They greeted us with a GREAT BIG welcome! My breakfast was simple, but VERY DELICIOUS I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the ambiance! The quality of the food was some goodness. The English muffin was JUST like I like it: GOOD, buttery & golden brown. If visit, do try their signature coffee cake. They change the flavor daily. Today was apple cinnamon. VERY moist & desiccant. The atmosphere was was BEAUTIFUL! As u can see I got a picture by 1 of my favorite movies. Check me out

My family and I visited this place and it was absolutely disgusting. We ordered crab cakes, chicken and waffles, pancakes, French fries, hamburger and egg rolls. Everything was frozen not fresh. The pancakes and waffles were doughy. No flavor or seasoning on anything. I asked if the food was fresh or frozen before ordering. The waiter said they cook everything fresh. That was a lie! My crab cake were burnt and hard. The servers are nice. The inside is clean all except some dirty saucers. The food is trash! I will not return here again.

Wow this place was very surprising. I wasn't expecting to walk into such a nice atmosphere. The reminder me of the aria hotel. The service was great. We got chicken fried steak and eggs with biscuits and gravy. I will give it a 9/10. They have a display case with tons of great looking desserts that I definitely want to try next time. The breakfast comes with toast, biscuits or muffin. Server was very fast and attendive. We will definitely be back again. They have a very nice looking bar as well and I believe bottomless memoses for around fifteen dollars.

We found about this place from Guy on DDD, so we had to experience it. We came in for breakfast and where there at 730a (jet lag). My wife had the crab cakes with holindase & I had the breakfast burrito with aged beef. Both of them tasted outstanding to top it off, they have fresh squeezed OJ :) and great tasting coffee. Service didn't dissapoint either, it was topnotch & showed the staff truly enjoyed what they do. I wish we had room for dessert as it's all homemade.

This is one of the best overall restaurants in San Diego, and it’s a no doubt #1 for breakfast. Best breakfast flavors without a doubt. Ever since the remodel during COVID, they have been absolutely knocking it out of the park. Do yourself a favor and go off-menu, order a Cincinnati chili waffle for breakfast. The best. Or the hob Nob Benedict. Can’t go wrong. Jeanette is a top notch server, really on top of things so your breakfast and coffee are piping hot. Plus the pups love her since she gives out treats. Can’t say enough good things about hob Nob!

We arrived at 2:00 pm and it was empty because of the between lunch and dinner crowd. This restaurant has been here since 1944 and has some great breakfast items, loved their Benedict's. Also a small bar for drinks and also fresh baked items. Great ambiance, a fun place for breakfast and also had outdoor seating.

The corned beef hash and eggs is one of my favorite breakfasts in San Diego. The corned beef is made on the premises with savory spices and a decent brine. Served with flavorful O'Brien potatoes and spectacular homemade chutney, it's divine. For a perfect comfort dinner, try the chicken and dumplings. Also, the crab Benedict comes with a heaping helping of fresh crab. Friendly service in a bustling environment.

I had my first Monte Cristo and it was incredible! As well as the house coffee which I regretfully did not take a photo of. Even so, was a phenomenal coffee beverage. Thank you so much! The wait staff should know how to handle a large party without looking and feeling frantic. The wait staff also needs to check the tables more often to make sure that the guests have everything they need...The bus boys were awesome. And the food is overpriced for what you get. Good American fare. A bit old fashion and nostalgic. Lots of menu choices but I'd recommend sticking with the items you recognize. Probably best to avoid the seafood. Also, if you like your steak medium rare, order it medium. The tend to undercook. Definitely worth a try if you feel adventurous.

Found this gem on Driver in, diners, and dives and it did not disappoint. We only had to wait 20 minutes for an inside table and it was totally worth it. First time ordering take out from this place. Paid ahead of time, showed up and they said I owe them money. They hand me the receipt and turns out someone added food to my order after it’s already paid for. Cinnamon toast was mid, serving size definitely didn’t match the cost. After the dissatisfaction with the food and service making me feel like I was the bad guy, not a return visit for me.

Great brunch spot with really cute modern diner vibes. Food was delicious too. We ordered a benedict, french toast, mimosa flight and loco moco. My only complaint is about the french toast, it was pretty dry. Wouldn’t recommend it. Parking: street parking(if you’re lucky you’ll find a spot nearby) Usually the place is really really busy over the weekends, but we came in at 11am so we waited only about 15 mins.

The Hog Wild omelette was excellent. So was Don Felix's Mocha Mexicano. The coffee cake and hash browns were just "good" -- they have the potential to be excellent as well, but mine tasted like they had been sitting out for a little while. The service was friendly and superb.

The food and service was amazing. I am originally from NYC and love diner food. I been living in San Diego county since 2016 and could not find any real "Diner" food since I been here til now. Not only was the food great, both ladies who serviced my family and I were sweet and amazing. If you want great Diner food I highly recommend.

The decor is nice. The food is just ok to me. The club sandwich was dry. Could have used more mayo. The chicken fried steak was ok too but also dry and could have used more seasoning. The pancakes were the best thing and that’s saying something since I didn’t even order it. Parking is definitely hard to find on the weekends.

The breakfast was underwhelming. I got the blueberry pancakes and they were really bland. The Biscuits & gravy had an interesting taste. Didn’t love it. The pumpkin spice latte however was delicious!. We came on on a Sunday and it was really busy so service was slow.

The restaurant was a great diner atmosphere, serving lots of different options-like all day breakfast! We also enjoyed the fresh baked bread. But I was a bit confused about the price of my meal; the price of the french toast was more then what was listed in the menu.

Very good breakfast and at a reasonable price. Definitely recommend trying the food. The staff was very friendly and authentic in their kindness. Loved it. My son had the banana brulee pancakes, while I ordered the egg plate with a biscuits and gravy addition. Fresh squeezed orange juice and espresso.

Fun spot for breakfast and brunch! In a cool neighborhood, when you walk in you feel like you have transported to an old fashioned diner with coffee cakes and counter service. The waffle was fluffy and sweet. The coffee cake had the perfect layer of icing and the biscuits are a must have.

We had the Hob Knob Omlet and the chicken and dumplings. It was definitely worth the wait. The gravy was the star of the chicken and dumplings. Highly flavorful and thick. The wait staff were so pleasant and I love that they still wear diner uniforms. A definite visit if ever in the area.

As a tourist my group and I walking half s mile up hill to reach this restaurant, it was 100% worth it. The food was amazing, the staff was kind, and the bottomless mimosas were perfect. I highly recommend this place for anyone spending time in the area. More

Easily my new favorite brunch place! Hob Nob Hill is located in a lovely historic building nestled in Bankers Hill and just a few blocks from Balboa park. The interior gives off lush, retro vibes and even boasts crystal chandeliers and a

We’ve been here three times during our stay in San Diego (2x for breakfast and 1x for dinner). We loved it so much because the food is really delicious and everyone is so friendly! It’s definitely a good place to go!

Attended with my Sunday School class and we were treated very well. Had to wait about 35 minutes before we were seated but it was worth it. The food was very good and our wait staff was very accommodating. More

Amazing food, service, and atmosphere at an affordable price; we'll definitely be coming back every time we visit San Diego - probably a half dozen items on the menu I am looking forward to trying! More

Food was yummy and plentiful. Server was nice, but service was just ok. Glasses and mugs were dirty and had to be taken back, had to ask repeated for things. Could have just been a bad day More

Old school family restaurant that had a wildly diverse customer base. This is how restaurants used to be. Great food great service. Huge variety. Breakfast Lunch or Dinner.

  • Tim Ficke

Delicious!! Two great mimosas options. A flight with 4 juices for $25 or bottomless for $15 a person. The food came so fast it was shocking! And delicious!! More

Great place, super cute, and good prices for the area. Hand made sausage Pattie’s on the breakfast sandwich! Greasy OJ. Worth going if you are in the area. More

Food was pretty good. Nothing was outstanding here. Liked their unlimited mimosa deal. French fries tasted like the crinkle cut you buy in bulk at Costco.
