I absolutely love public art; having a public garbage can, a transformer box, or the support beam of a subway stop painted by an artist just makes everything more beautiful, but these stairs are on another level! These were my favorite steps in the whole city! The artwork and detail is so beautiful. My suggestion is heading to these steps first, hiking up them (it’s not too bad), and then walking upward you’ll then find the 16th Avenue steps, and once you climb those you can go to the overlook. It made for a good journey and allowed us to see all the beautiful art. If you don’t feel up to trekking up both sets of stairs, or walking over to the 16th Avenue ones, the view once at the top of the hidden garden steps is worth it.

We were so excited to see the Hidden Garden Steps because it originally started as a community self help project back in 2005 and later a second flight of steps was commissioned in 2013. I love the motifs and vibrant colours of the steps. The steps are designed along several themes such as garden scenes, the sun and moon as well as an aquarium theme. The steps are especially pretty at sunset because the rays of the sun reflects off the tiles and makes the montage even more vibrant.

Off the beaten path of tourist attractions...but fun to stop at if you are heading up turtle hill. Lots of people like to stop and do selfies here. I liked to read all the names of people who donated to make the hidden steps special. It's inspiring to think of the surrounding community members getting together to make their neighborhood more beautiful. Be sure to climb to the top and turn around for a beautiful view of the city.

Stunning & beautiful!!! I absolutely love public art; having a public garbage can, a transformer box, or the support beam of a subway stop painted by an artist just makes everything more beautiful, but these stairs are on another level! The mosaic tile art is so colorful and beautiful - I've attached pictures so you can see for yourself. And the stairs themselves are shallow, so they're easy to walk up without getting winded.

Beautiful tiled steps to walk and admire nestled in the Inner Sunset District. This little neighborhood gem would not set your wallet back but may take your breath away. Walk to top for some skyline views. Be mindful of the surroundings in regards to parking and noise. The quiet neighborhood has sensitive ears. Enjoy the sights, snap some selfies and move on. Try to visit the nearby 16th Avenue Tiles Steps too!

This is a beautiful project that the community partook of. I love the vibrant colors and the design. I joined a walking tour to see the two stairways. I am glad my friends and I decided to do it. We paid for the tour, but not to "enter" the stairs. I think that it was well worth it.

Beautiful steps! So creatively done. Hidden gem in the city. Not totally worth the hike to the top (just leads to another road) but good entertaining exercise none the less. Easy street parking near by. **If you liked this review or thought it was helpful, give it a thumbs up. thanks!

The hidden garden steps were pretty cool. The mosaics were made into flowers, butterflies and other garden-related things. Once you climbed the steps on 16th street, you take a right and go through this cute neighborhood a short distance to find the stairs to heaven mosaic stairway. I only gave 4 stars because I had no idea the two mosaic steps were linked. I guess that’s why it’s hidden. Noted! 5 stars!!

A beautiful stair with quaint artistic design. A hidden gem of the city. This stair is lesser known compared to the nearby 16th Ave Steps but equally beautiful. Note that 16th Ave Steps is only a 5 mins walk away, so it is definitely worth to visit this stair on your way to 16th Ave Steps.

We went to twin peeks first and then we head to this hidden stairs. I loved it! I don’t know how long this has been here but it’s really nice. The neighborhood it’s also pretty safe and quiet. When we went it was empty. We run into an other person which was nice because we got to take each other’s pics. Also I love how there are plants and succulents on the area.

  • Jake L

A cute set of steps, each of the steps has a few little details that is worth looking at on your way up! There's another 20-30 steps after those pictured, just around a corner at the top. After going up these, I recommend following the hill up the 16th Avenue steps to Grandview park for an amazing 360 degree view of the entire city.

  • Charlotte Handley

Another gem of a set of steps. I recommend that you walk down these steps and turn and look back at the end of each set as you descend. Wow, such skill and creativity. Look for the bugs as well as the flowers. Perhaps you might recognize some of the names of the contributors. Have fun. Thank you to the community which created them.

  • Cindy G

It is really nice. Each set of stairs have a theme. It has been renovated not long ago as you can see in the pictures. Do not hesitate to go all the way up to go see the next set of stairs (tiles steps). Climb all the stairs because there is actually a lot to see all the way up that you would not see when you stay at the bottom.

  • Matty B

Beautifully painted steps, leading up to Golden Gate Heights. The best way to visit Grandview Park is to climb up the Hidden Garden Steps and down the 16th Ave Tiled Steps, to visit both decorated staircases.

These steps are a beautiful use of public space and especially representative of the San Francisco aesthetic. A garden of native California flora lies alongside the colorfully painted steps. Visit on a cloudless day and you'll be rewarded with a view overlooking the Inner Sunset and Golden Gate Park.

  • Joumana Accad

Loved the steps! Beautiful and such artistic mosaic creations, I cannot wait to go back and climb them all over again! In addition, the place was quiet, nearly deserted, and offers a fantastic birds eye view of the setting with the urban skyline in the background and the ocean on the west side More

  • Tore Brynaa

A quaint little experience. Worth the trip out there if you care about local arts and projects. I really like how the steps align and form big pictures with lots of detail.

Found these cool steps just tooling around Google Maps looking for places to go in SF near Golden Gate Park. Quite nice. Not too long and a cute little community garden towards the top. For a great view, continue walking to nearby Grandview Park which lives up to its name!

  • Dan Quine

Wonderful tiled steps connecting two levels of 16th Avenue. Less well-known than the Miraga Steps that climb to the top of Grand View, so less busy. Lovely view of Golden Gate Park at the top, with the Ferris Wheel lit up at night. A good

  • Yinzú Nairouz

Beautiful steps, better in person. Of course, these steps will be part of your workout in the hills of San Francisco.

I love this project. There are succulent gardens that follow along the stairs each way. Fun spot to capture views, enjoy some color and nature, or exercise.. go up and down a few times if you woke up with extra energy lol

  • Minu James

Ohh it's Hidden. There are about 2 similar Tiled steps. One is the small which we come across in the beginning then we have to walk further ahead to find the 2nd. It's a good experience & a beautiful scenery from the top.

  • Jade Tuff

They are beautiful! If you want pictures here, you should go before the sun peaks over the staircase- it will lead to overexposure. Get here before 11am or after 2pm for the best light and most enjoyable experience.

  • Heather McClelland

Only worth looking at if you're already around there, but very pretty. Will take two seconds.

The MOST beautiful steps in SF. because halfway up you can see the The Golden Gate Bridge. So AMAZING!! Tomorrow I take this train (near these steps) to meet a friend; that’s when I’ll come back and add pictures.

Impressive mosaic of flowers up the numerous steps. Take your time to walk up whilst admiring the vibrant colours and beautifully designed flower patterns. For the fit you can always pace up your steps.

  • Amber Wacker

These are hidden, but what a beautiful gem for the city! Loved them and the plant life around. These type of things take so many hands and creative energies. They are meant to be seen and appreciated

  • Vilma Peccin

I love these stairs. Definitely not as popular as the 16th St Stairs since there wasn't a single person the whole time we were there.

Came here to kill time while waiting for our order from Pineapple King bakery. It was very beautiful and a quick little workout. Loved the dragonfly section.

Very similar to 16th Avenue garden steps. But not publicized that much. A 5-10 min walk down the road on 16th Avenue will lead to it and one can get down to Kirkham street from here.

  • Norma Olivarri-Hernandez

A very unique thing to see in San Fransico, although did not have a lot of visitors. I would strongly suggest you check them out as pictures do not do these beautiful stairs justice.

  • Smevin Bravis

My favorite of the staircases in this area. The art is more vibrant I feel, and it gets less crowded. View is slightly inferior to the 16th street steps but oh well whaddayagonnado.

  • Sally McKinney

This work was done in 2005 in conjunction with another nearby tiled staircase, the 26th Avenue steps. The work is beautiful and well worth a visit. Be sure to bring your camera.

Gorgeous step mural in a quiet neighborhood. Of note though. There is a similar steps mural nearby that is actually more famous. So make sure you do stop by both!

  • Stephen

Hidden Garden Steps are located quite far away from the tourist attractions. But this is just an incredible art piece, as there are mosaic tiles on each step

  • Aaron Gershon

I had a great time exploring all of the staircases around. It’s very impressive to see in person.

Gorgeous Mosaic on the stair risers! Make sure to find your way all the way to the top of the hill (Crown Hill?) for gorgeous 360 views.

  • Nic Bowman

This was part of a walking tour we took while visiting the city. Just one of many aesthetically captivating stairways we were shown.

  • Janfrederick Hurd

San Francisco is such a great city to walk. Look up the Crosstown Trail and do the middle portion to get in some great staircases.

  • Irie Chu

This was super beautiful and neat. Be prepared for sore legs if you decide to climb the steps. The view from above is so worth it!

  • Sam Miller

Incredible hidden gem in San Francisco! P.S. - There are another set of stairs less than a mile away if you are interested :)

  • Atefeh eftekhari

Every time i visit this place i get too excited! These are my favorites steps in the city! The artwork is just beautiful!

  • Patrick Flanagan

They look like normal steps when your going down. When you get to the bottom and turn around you'll see all the colors.

  • Leighann Breeze

Great stop for cute photos. A very short walk so don't plan to be here all day. Very quiet mid-day during the week.

  • Vaishu

Loved this place. Really fun to climb the stairs and see how the mosaic art unfolds!
