I live in Sherwood, almost THIRTY MILES away from Hawthorne Liquor. If I attempt the drive during certain hours of the day, it can take me over an hour to get up there--and on the way up to this amazing store, I pass dozens of other liquor-purchasing locations. DOZENS. So why, with gas prices the way they are, would I travel allllll the way to SE Portland to buy liquid courage? One reason: the wonderful humans who work at Hawthorne Liquor genuinely care about the happiness of their customers. I have never seen a team of employees go so above and beyond like these delightful people do. Kyle has curated the most impeccable, diverse selection of bourbons and whiskeys and can speak to ALL of them; Koyote is hilariously funny and friendly with flawless product suggestions; Savannah gives impeccable, detailed, personalized flavor profile advice (and is as smart and funny as she is drop-dead GORGEOUS, my goodness!); and Milo is a wealth of knowledge about logistics, specific product searches, shipments, and the OLCC (the latter of which was very helpful for me, coming from a state that doesn't have liquor laws like we do in Oregon). Absolutely worth the drive, especially if you're looking for knowledge on something you don't normally drink. I can count how many times I've been in the store on one hand, and they're always busy--but I'm greeted like a family friend every time I walk in the door. This staff ROCKS!

Wow, don’t go to this store. I walked in here and was immediately yelled at to either leave my smaller purse by the door (which isn’t safe), or have it inspected before I leave. No hello first, just yelled at. I could also barely hear the woman over the trashy music that was BLASTING. I made a selection, and when it was time to pay, she rung it up as 3$ over the sale tag price (which was still current). When I asked, I got a rude lecture about non-existent OLCC laws (I hold an OLCC license). I’m not expecting much when walking into a liquor store.. but I was in a great mood, then treated like garbage and left in a horrible mood. Whoever the owner is, please talk to the girl with the scrunched curls behind the counter about doing the absolute bare minimum. Born and raised portlander who lives in the neighborhood and I will never be back.

Usually the service is spot-on here, but I found myself in the store alone waiting at the counter for a few minutes while the clerk was outside chatting with someone. Sure, I get it, you're catching up with somebody for a second and I can respect that. But then no eye contact when he comes in, and the bottle I had chosen was on the wrong place on the shelf so it was a different price than I was expecting. Sure I get it, people move bottles around. But no acknowledgement of that fact, and the clerk is on his phone trying to choose music to play in the shop as I have to pull more cash out of my wallet. All the while he doesn't even look up. Again, usually I have such good experiences here, I was a little surprised and disappointed today.

Please do not shop here!! They are NOT local friendly!! Was in the neighborhood to pick up a cake at JaCivas on a Saturday afternoon. Of course parking was terrible. Needed to stop bye the liquor store as well so I thought I would Park in their lot, pick up a bottle run across the street and pick up my cake. It took me less than ten minutes to get my cake. When I got back to my car the owner guy was standing outside giving me the dirtiest looks ever!! (When I was purchasing my liquor I asked the cashier if it would be alright if I parked there while I ran to get my cake. She said be careful of the lot parking guy he could give me a ticket.)

I've been returning as a loyal customer and keeping my home bar stocked for years at this location, but after an overly aggressive interaction with an employee working there this afternoon, I won't be back. It is extremely intimidating to be told you have to hand over your handbag, containing only your keys, wallet, and phone by a man who is leaning over you, and following you to the counter, when no time has been given to process this new policy. I declined and opted to leave instead of continuing to purchase everything I came for. I would be returning if the new policy information had been delivered in a less hostile manner

An amazing selection with a personnel that exemplifies good customer service. Don't let the vandalism deter you from checking out this amazing liquor store. It's just amazing Urban camouflage for what makes Portland still a great city to live in despite what's going on and other areas. They need our business and I'm going to continue to give them what pennies I can to keep them afloat. Cuz at the very least walking into a liquor store where the employees don't treat you like garbage is worth investing in. Quote hard roads lead to amazing stories. That's what these employees share between making amazing selections for liquor.

I had one hell of a great experience at Hawthorne Liquor recently and needed to share. I went in thinking I was going to pick up a bottle of a tried-and-true scotch I usually mindlessly grab, but a jolly gentleman named Scott saw my choice and instead of just ringing me out and sending me on my way, engaged me in a little game of "If You Like That, Have You Tried This?" and I ended up taking home two bottles of his recommendation for the same price as my one, and now I have a new favourite go-to scotch for when I don't want to spend $40+/bottle. Thanks, Scott! (It's White Horse, in case you're wondering.)

Store looks super nice post renovation, but the real deal is the selection of liquor - in particular whiskey. It's absolutely enormous with anything you could possibly imagine. I was in particular struck by the nice, large selection of rye's. The owner, Ryan is my friend and he is really knowledgeable about most liquors in general and would be an excellent source if you had any questions. I forgot to ask him about pastis which is pretty rare around these parts, but his store would seem to carry many of the less commonly trafficked spirits.

  • Chris M.

Really disappointed with these guys. Online inventory showed several bottles of hard to get bourbon and whiskey. Showed up before the store opened and waited, only for an employee to tell me it was an "inventory glitch" once they did open. REALLY? How do you have an inventory glitch on 8 different types of sought after whiskey on the same day. I call BS. In reality it's either reserved for bar/restaurant accounts (hope this is the case) or the good stuff is getting purchased by employees. Either way, something's fishy...

  • Troy Sterling Woody

A great team here makes for helpful support in finding the right liquors and mixers for your cocktail needs. Good selection and variety that is usually well stocked. If it’s not on the shelf, just ask as it may be in the back. This high volume shop located across from a top notch taco joint moves some serious product, so the shelves can get hot hot hard at times. They tend to restock on Mondays, so if you can’t find what you’re looking for then, it just in a box somewhere and the staff can find it for you.

  • Luke Bogash

Manager lied to me about inventory. Went to purchase a bottle of Rittenhouse Rye. Online inventory said over 70 bottles...I asked the clerk working the floor and she said "you need to ask the manager about those". Manager said they had none in stock and that it was an issue with their inventory system. If there was none there, the clerk would not have had me ask the manager for a bottle. If it's reserved to restaurants, just say so. Don't lie to a customer. That's no way to have them come back.

  • Gail S

Great liquor store by Portland standards. Prices here tend to be a little better than other liquor stores on Hawthorne, and even if there is something out of stock on the shelves, if I ask for it, an employee is always happy to grab one for me from the back. Not sure why everyone is getting so upset about parking... Everywhere on Hawthorne is picky about parking, all you have to do is park on a neighborhood street (a total of 20 steps further away) if you plan on going other places as well.

  • Benjamin Dyer

My new go to liquor store in the Mt. Tabor area. Tucked into a tiny shopping plaza, it can be a little difficult to see from the street. There is a small parking lot with a few spots that are generally empty if you go during off hours. I've had really friendly, helpful service here and gotten some great suggestions for alternatives to the standard fare. While not as big as other stores like Hollywood liquor, they've got a really well charged and cochise selection with a good variety.

I called twice first time they answered and said hello and then they proceeded to end the call i called a second time i mean incidents happen the lady that answered was being moody from second one i asked if they had the bottle of clase azul ultra añejo she said you will have to wait i don't know from the top of my head what we have i said im more than happy to wait and she left me waiting for over 20 min if she didn't want to give me info she could at least said no we don't have it

  • Michael Parker

  • James Byrd

Scott is an amazing person... He is probably the most knowledge person in regards to alcohol that I have ever met... He is capable of not only remembering the kinds of things you like to help you find new stuff to try... But he is capable of taking the slightest hint of what you are looking for and either finding it... Or finding something different that you will like as well... Oh... And the store is REALLY clean...

  • Daniel Joseph

Scott is the guy who orders the whiskey. This is important because he has a refined palate and can recommend the stuff that's not fancy but tastes great. This store used to be only fair, my first visit in the 90s was disappointing. Now, yeah, wow. Everything is here that you'd actually buy. Not the place for the grand a bottle / look but don't touch bottles, but absolutely the place for solid Bourbon and Scotch.

  • Mike Shanker

This place literally has one of the best selections of mixtures around. Not to mention you can find whatever it is you need to drink whether it's high-class whiskey or fireball. the guys working at the counter were pretty friendly and pointed us in the right direction for what we needed. As soon as you walked in the door they were ready to help us and find exactly what we needed for a good vacation in Portland.

  • Chandra Quarterman

I have ventured into Hawthorne Liquor Store twice now, and both times I was greeted by Savannah-who just has the most incredible vibe! And although I had only gone in once prior, she remembered me and I just find that so personable and really just made my day. She was kind enough to answer all the questions I had for her. I truly appreciated the selection and chill vibe of both this establishment and Savannah.

  • Joseph Lechuga

While the location is small, the selection is pretty good. Better than that, the employees are well-versed in their product. They have given me advice about various whiskeys that was truly helpful. If you thatbmightvseem like a thought about up selling, then I assure that is not the case. Their recommendations seem more about whether the customer will like it rather than how much the customer spends.

  • Sean Hannigan

Its okay. A little bit of a inconvenience, they didnt supply a face covering like every other store that requires them . It was a stormy, rainy night and id lost mine. Luckily the lady I was with let me borrow hers after she shopped. They dont carry Balyhoo Irish whiskey but had a decent second choice. Not my favorite or 2nd favorite liquor store but will work fine if your in Hawthorn for the night.

  • Heather Preston

Very knowledgeable and helpful staff, and good prices! We were looking for a slightly obscure liqueur and they had four versions and multiple sizes of some versions. Good sake selection also, although they go broad with multiple companies rather than very deep with, say, the local SakeOne (some but not all types SO makes, for example). Will try them on our favorite obscure dessert wine next :-)

  • William Beck

Felt like a party in there yesterday: fun music and a bunch of people. Good selection of alcohol I think, but I'm no expert. They had what I needed. Checkout person was partying for sure. It was a Friday, but maybe the environment seemed a little tone deaf to the current situation. On the other hand, the upbeat atmosphere was pretty refreshing. Not sure how I feel about the looseness.

  • Brian Deebel

owner regularly lies about what's in stock, because his bar-owning friends are more important than some random customer off the street. always sketchy people hanging around in the evenings. store is filthy and dusty. half the time you walk in and nobody seems to be around and you have to yell for someone to come help you from in back! no wonder people just go to the hollywood store

  • Andrew Copeland

This place used to have all my favorite flavors of Pinnacle Vodka - I don't know why they stopped carrying them? I think the owner drinks it all himself. *UPDATE as of 12/16* They now have the myriad of Pinnacle Vodka flavors I enjoy - included some that have been since discontinued. If you want to get a wide assortment of flavored vodka, definitely come here!

  • p dinapoli

I popped in here for some gin the other day - and the very nice young lady at the counter asked me to post a review - and I said I would! She was super friendly, and everyone I've ever interacted with at hawthorne liquor has been nice. you can buy your hooch anywhere...might as well support a store that has nice people working there.

  • Stew

Great store. Typically friendly service. This time tho.. 2 cashiers. The 1 who helped me, not so good. He was in a Jazz jersey. He was more interested in the conversation the other cashier was having (basketball) He didn't say ONE word to me during our transaction. Not "Hi" not "thank you" NOTHING! Very poor customer service …

  • Mary Kish

I’ve been coming here regularly for about two years now. Some of the nicest coolest people work here, and I love that they care about the people and dogs that come in. Savannah always greets us so kindly, and typically has a little treat for my pup. She knows her stuff about liquor too, and I get good recommendations every time.

  • Evan Smit

I don't drink but I bought a gift for someone here. Very unassuming from the outside but once you walk it it's very organized and professional, payed less than expected for something I already had my eye on and knew the price range of. Definitely recommend for someone like me who's never been in a liquor store before.

  • Russ Ham

Stopped in for something on the website. Missed it but man. Incredible selection of hard to find bourbons. The customer service provided by Savanna is unmatched. She has lots of knowledge and recommendations as well as eager to help me find some alternatives. My go to place for all my beverage needs from now on!

  • Ron Paul Walk

Great customer service, great selection of quality liquor. Good selection of Japanese liquor, too. I had a question about scotch whisky and Savanna steered me in the right direction. It’s my favorite now! All of them employees are super friendly and knowledgeable. My definite go to liquor store

  • Meg Weber

Great SE liquor store. They're small, but the shelves are always full and the staff is super friendly and helpful. Pro tip: Park in the lot ONLY if you're a patron of these shops, don't shop here then cross the street, the parking attendant will slap you with a ticket. They're serious.

  • Johnny Lexus

Called in for pricing on May 2nd, 2021 for Hennessy VS and VSOP. Lady told me that it was 59.95 for VSOP and 32.95 for VS. I drove 75 mph from Beaverton and at checkout, the same lady that was on the phone told me that it is $41.95 for VS, not $32.95. I cursed at her and left.

  • la mer

New favorite liquor store. Honest, no frills recommendations. Gotta love that. The guy (and I’m sorry I didn’t get his name) took his time to provide his whiskey recommendation and give a little background to it. I’ll be coming here from now on.

  • R Z

Great spot, I went to this location to pick up a birthday gift and decided I wanted to make mojitos as well. The person at the register was able to give me suggestions on both whisky and the best rum for mojitos. Will be back to this local spot!

  • Terra Fenderson

A friendly and knowledgeable staff, a wide selection of the liquors you want, & my cigarette brand are the best price in town. Clean, organized, socially distanced, and they enforce the mask rule. Get your liquor here, you will be happy.

  • Michael Franz

Great selection of bourbons and the staff is not just friendly and engaging they have wonderful knowledge about the products in the store. This is my new go to store even though I have at least a dozen more that are closer to me.

  • Sumer Gregg

Not a bad place to shop liquor - friendly staff and GREAT selection of my favorite local distilleries. NOT open on Sundays though, you have to go to the one on Hawthorne and 11th if you want a liquor store that's open on Sunday.

  • Rat Allen

Why is nobody ever around when you walk in? Not like they're busy cleaning or stocking - place is a sty. Permanently broken ATM, dust and dirt and bits of glass everywhere, lights falling out of the ceiling even. Get some signs!

  • Wilfred Trueax

Every retailer in the world will offer you a receipt, but not Hawthorne Liquor. What's the big deal? I don't find the clerks there particularly friendly either. Maybe it's my looks... If so, your mileage may vary of course.

  • Brennan Randel

Helpful and knowledgeable staff, who can make great recommendations on a huge variety of selections. By far one of the best places to explore when you graduate to adult beverages that are accented by a cardigan and a pipe.

  • Keir Karson

Went in looking for an Amaro, but they were all out. But all was not lost because of the assistance of a smart and helpful employee who was kind enough to track down my bottle - even if it meant going to NW PDX. Thanks!

  • Emily Williams

I've shopped here for 14 years and had uniformly great experiences. Good recommendations from the friendly, chill staff. They're currently completing a remodel/expansion, so it'll be even more good stuff in the future.

  • Maximilian F

It's not super conveniently located for most of us, but if you want the best on-shelf selection in town, you should make the trip. I don't know any store in town with this many bottles, esp. mezcal and whiskey!1

  • AJ Wheeler

Can't recommend this place enough! Scott (I think he's the manager idk) helped me with a case of champagne for a new year's party and really knocked it outta the park! Great selection and knowledgeable staff.

  • Miss Jenson

Savannah was extremely rude to me when I came in for a bottle in the morning and insulted me for buying liquor at that hour. Didn't know judgment was part of the service here..taking my business elsewhere.

  • Joel Corcoran

Friendly staff who offer great advice without being snooty about it. I know little about liquor, but they always help me find the right product when I'm buying gifts for friends or clients.

  • Amanda

They've been out of Eastside marionberry liquor for many months now. I contacted Eastside and they said they are still making it and it's in stock at other places. Please bring it back!

  • Joe Cullen

The staff are always giving me great recommendations for alternatives to my regular choices. Plus, they're always super friendly and kind-hearted. This place is a true neighborhood gem.

  • William Smith

Service was slow because of the cashier socializing , its a neighborhood with a lot of blab going on instead of waiting on people standing in line, pretty limited selection of Vodka

  • Cheryl Cady

I was glad they were open later on Sunday... The people were kind and the cashier, (a young man) I think was actually flirting with me, that made me feel pretty and good! Thanks!

  • Stuart McKay

They have a few whiskey connoisseurs on staff that has recommended me quite a few tasty bottles. Friendly and approachable staff make it my go to bottle shop in the neighborhood.

  • APJ

Great store with a nice selection. Unfortunately, it sounds like Scott is no longer working there, so might not be worth going out of the way to visit this location anymore.

  • Scott Wheeler

Best selection of craft whiskey, rum, gin and mezcals. Super nice staff and really knowledgeable. Every Wednesday they have a high end cocktail and spirit tasting from 4-7!

  • Sentierra Forbes

Always a great experience. The staff is super helpful and very funny. It’s my preferred liquor store and sometimes I go out of my way to go here instead. Highly recommend!

  • Mark Lewis

Truly contactless curbside! Staff were fabulous! We will do business here, even after Covid. Thank you for making things so easy! And I loved the note on our box. Connie

  • Megan Boyd (Portland Pugaholics)

Super nice staff. They're cool with us bringing in our Pug puppy and our well behaved older Chihuahua. Plus, thanks to the Gin I bought there, I'm writing this review!

  • Malia Mills

I apparently was taking too long making my selection so the cashier got nervous and took my picture after asking if I needed help. Good selection, just weird service.

  • Anthony Shanks

Scott was the most helpful. No upselling just good recommendations. Also didn’t make me feel rushed even tho I came in 10 min before closing. Will definitely be back!

  • Tom Welsh

This has been my neighborhood liquor store for years. Friendly, helpful staff people abound. Plus, they are expanding, so there is even more to love...go there!

  • Jen Kautt

Fast friendly service with a nice selection. It's really nice to just get in and get out, plus they have been really good about social distancing. Great place?

  • Elliot Simmons

The alcohol really does the heavy lifting here. If they just sold bloody mary and margarita mix I doubt I would ever shop here. As a product, alcohol is tops!

  • Alison Rice

These folks have been wonderful. The customer service is always 5 star. I drive from Pleasant Valley to support them...There are liquor stores much closer!

  • Scott Landia

Great selection and nice employees. Had to make a run once and they were nice enough to keep it open just 5 mins more for us to grab n go. Can't beat that.

  • Jodie White Shield

I love the staff here! They are friendly, funny and knowledgeable! I love having it close to the Freddies so I can do all my shopping within close range.

  • Scott Kneeland

Another Oregon liquor store that hates the OLCC inventory site. They actively won't sell their stock if you come in asking for it after seeing it online.

  • Kiki

THIS IS THE BEST LIQUOR STORE. I love the owner. He is always there. Super friendly, knowledgeable, doesnt try to up sell you bs. Lots of local products

  • Michael Johnson

All the staff there are awesome! I don't even live in that neighborhood anymore and I still go over there to pick up a bottle and say hi. …

Amazing selection and really friendly owner. My go to spot for at home bar supplies and ingredients. Fair prices, clean store, 5 star for sure.

  • Mathew Snow

New location is bigger and better. Always good prices in comparison to other liquor stores. Staff is friendly and ready with recommendations.

  • Michele Miner

Best selection of vermouth imaginable, & a knowledgeable staff to teach you how to pick the perfect one for your needs. & they open at 9 AM!

  • Chris King

Great selection for such a small space. The owner is super nice, more like a bartender you chat with than somebody trying to move product.

  • amy c

Easy in and out with wine too! Plenty of mixers, local products, is locally owned, who supports their neighbors, and just a great store!

  • Jo Louie

OMG! Great liquor store whether you want to buy or need entertainment. The cashier is a hoot...he knows his stuff and stock! Drop by...

  • William Michael Smith

Always great selection, if you can't see it dont be discouraged these guys will have or will find it, friendly and helpful staff

  • Joshua Will

Staff decided to not card the 3 men in front of me but asked me for mine seems sketchy when you wanna to just part of your job

  • James Mock

Not a great selection everything is either higher priced liquor or budget liquor. Definitely could use more mid-range options.

  • Violet

Best local liquor store, always so well stocked and the staff are amazing. Savannah especially is such a kind, lovely person!

  • Rick Ferch

It's a small store and they did not have the liter size of whiskey I wanted. But it's a good place with friendly personnel.

  • Britt Vriesman

Scott and Kyle were great, extremely nice and knowledgeable. They have a great selection. I highly recommend this store.

  • Jarrett Volinic

Smaller store with limited selection. It's easy to get in and out quick, which is nice and it's usually not very busy.

  • thatguyjeff gamer

Great staff. New policy for backpacks and such but I completely understand that and they make every visit enjoyable.
