I had an incredible experience at Grey Matter this week and would recommend anyone looking to buy or get help with their bikes check them out. Like everybody else in the Covid pandemic, I've gotten fat. So I got my bike out of storage, bought some bike shoes and clip-less pedals on eBay and then realized I had no idea how to put them on, or how to make sure everything fit. I went down to Grey Matter and had three employees eagerly help me get everything figured out. Their staff is super knowledgeable, they have employees who were former reps both of the shoe brand I bought as well as the pedals I bought. They spent time helping me make sure the bike fit, showed me a couple of things I could buy to make the fit even better but didn't pressure me to buy anything. (In fact, they told me that I wouldn't need these upgrades until I was regularly riding more than 15 miles a day, and I'd know I needed the new parts because my back would start getting sore.) As an out-of-shape dad with an eBay bike, I'm always intimidated to go into bike shops because I feel like these bike experts are going to judge the fact that I don't know how to do any of the bike things myself. Maybe that's a mis-characterization of bike shops in general, but it's DEFINITELY a mis-characterization of Grey Matter. When I walked in and told them what I wanted, I felt like everybody was excited for my new adventure and wanted to help make it awesome. You guys have found a new loyal customer, thanks!!!
I'm taking my bike here several times to have to replaced. They have a huge amount of inventory and ways to customize your bicycle. the employees have always been kind and work diligently to get you in and out. Most recently however, I inquired about replacing the tires on my bike as the tread had worn off. I was suggested a certain type of tire and said I would be inquiring about said tires in the near future... I called ahead of time to see if said tires were available and was told yes they were in stock. I took my bike in which had a flat I was also looking to get repaired. Tries to find that said tires were no longer available and I was pretty much stuck with purchasing 2 tires with minimal tread, similar to the ones I was replacing, also the two that needed to be replaced was replaced with a tube that had a different gauge, I was then told I needed two tubes since the previous tubes were not the correct tubes for this type of bike. The only thing about that is that in my previous visits I was sold those tubes which was explained to me that and I quote"they were probably the only ones we had in stock"? At that moment I realized that if you don't know what you're purchasing I don't have a lot of knowledge about bicycles you could end up getting stuck with "whatever they have in stock". I'm only sharing my personal experience which sucks because I really like this bicycle shop but as mentioned above this experience was less than pleasant not sure I'll go back.
Update 2019-09-13: Grey Matter remains a paragon of customer service. I came in for an adjustment to a shifter that I had replaced here about a month ago. I probably went outside to try shifting about half a dozen times before we got it dialed in, and at no time was Brandon anything but helpful and patient. He answered a couple miscellaneous questions I had after the adjustment and I never felt like I was being shooed out. Also, the owner was there just chilling on a stool. Great vibe, great place. ***original review*** This is one of the best bike shops I've ever been to. Eric hooked me up; he patiently answered my questions, let me watch while he demonstrated the repairs, let me feel the adjustments he made, and made honest recommendations and didn't try to upsell me. They didn't have a couple of the tools I was looking for as they were in the middle of a remodel, but I'll be coming back in a couple weeks to buy from them anyway, because they deserve my business. Thanks, Eric and Grey Matter!
Went in because I snapped 3 spokes on the back tire of my ebike and i wanted to upgrade to wider tires to hold more weight. Was advised of what tires will hold my weight, but other then that it was an extremely unhelpful visit. His first question was "what's your budget?" Was constantly corrected on bike terminology. (Corrected me on my uses of "fat tires" and I didnt know that if I wanted the WHOLE back tire and motor replaced I had to name every distinct part I wanted replaced.) Was told need to order the spokes myself from the manufacturer for them to repair it. When I clarified asked about replacing the motor and increasing the tire width to better hold me, he said no due to needing a compatable battery. And finally when I asked about replacing both battery and tires(motor included for you bike experts) I was told "I can, but I won't." What ever you need for your ebike, don't go here for it. It's not that they can't help you, it's that they don't want to.
Bless These People. I have been looking for a FS 27.5 MTN BIKE for 2 Months that fit my (under $2K) budget. After just one call, Eric and Dillon found me a Marin B17 Two with a seat dropper (slightly used) and I was out the door for under $1,800 along with a Sweet GMF long sleeve. I drove down from the Verde Valley and they held the bike and even had a back up ready in case I didn't like the size or build. Dillion listened when I told him that I grew up BMX racing and he offered me a smaller stem so I less of a reach which was a perfect fit. I have been in many stores in the last 8 weeks ready to buy and couldn't get a bike. These folks were the most professional and nice people who delivered in spades. I rode my Marin this morning for 2 hours and had a blast. Everything was dialed, fast and responsive. I plan to stick with "GMF" and MARIN. Super Good. THANK YOU GUYS. I Will Be Back.
First of all I went in looking to buy a tire axle for my beach cruiser front tire and as Walk in there some young kid sitting on the chair on the other side as I'm walking in I can already tell that this is going to be a bad experience and sure enough it was. Kid had some attitude with me before he even knew what I was there for. I see you guys have had great reviews and decided to come from East Mesa on the bus to get sent away with nothing in hand the kid didn't even look on computer or nothing said he couldn't help me to go somewhere else in West phoenix area. Just told him how far I come to get an axle for my bike and this is the thanks I. These kids now days need to learn some manner's and respect. If I had a belt on I just might of been whooping his behind. Sorry for such a bad review. Hopefully it gets better.
Amazing crew! I been here a few times for random service. Theses guys have always been very helpful and have taken care of me. Every one of these guys seem to have been or are shop owners. For those people saying they were not approched while in the shop and walked out I would ask you to be a little more proactive and approach the staff face to face. They are really good people and in fact have enough staff on hand to attend to anything you may need. You have to keep in mind this is a bike shop, not McDonalds. I came in for a tool to do a job and left with the job done and this was close to closing time on a Saturday! They we're even willing to sell me their shop tool until I mentioned I had the bike with me!
I love all the people working here! The owner is so totally cool and professional. He took really good care of the 3 bikes i bought there over the 3 years since 2014 when i first learned about them. Such a well appointed store and clean and organized. I moved back to my hometown El Paso Texas and I will miss Mike and his son, who are such cool and rad personalities. Thank you all for your service and support. Be sure to like my review if you find it helpful. Thank you, Chris Grohusko, published and past contracted photographer and astronomer for Canon Cameras Tokyo Japan and National Geographic Washington D.C., and Discovery Channel agency Lion Tv New York City.
Don't trust them 1. It is irrefutable they broke their word on a deal 2. In their consignments they do not give receipts and deal only in cash according to Mike 3. After they broke their word mike asked me to donate bikes to them, obviously wanting to make 100% profit 4. Do t count on getting a word in edgewise w mike. He constantly talks and interrupts you 5. The shop manager Erik Angermeier used to own the Slippery Pig. When he was there he substituted factory parts for cheaper parts on new bikes on us meaning you didn't get what you paid for. I was told this was his common practice. He will also bend your earNon stop about his ex wife
I was there with a flat, their store is in the neighborhood. I had no money, I build jewlery, I had some stuff with me. They wouldn't trade for an inner tube. They said just cash. So it's like 110 out and I wind up pushing the bike all the way, which was about 2milesI never went back. I would have brought the money for a tube right back to them, I also had a Bluetooth speaker I tryed to get them to hold, no dice. I'm not going back and wouldn't recommend them, not a very well stocked store. If I can help someone out I do, that's part of what's wrong with the world, sorry. I'm going to try to get enough to open my own store. Thanks
I'd like to sincerely thank this shop for helping us when we had a crash today. My husband and I went out for a ride & I managed to drop my credit card early in the ride, leaving us with no form of payment. My husband crashed and badly bent his derailleur, so I called this shop to see if they had time to spot fix a rear derailleur and to tell them we couldn't pay right away (as we had nothing on us). They offered us cold water & first aid & the mechanic fixed the derailleur (which was vent into the spokes!) in less than 10 minutes. We are so grateful!
I’ve been coming here for years, I should’ve reviewed them sooner. I actually bought my first full suspension bike, a Pivot from GMF and I couldn’t be happier with the experience. They’re always able to answer my questions and make great suggestions when I want upgrade components. I’ve probably been in the shop 20 some times during the last couple of years to service my bikes, buy supplies or parts and I always spend more time then I intend just talking about bikes with the staff. I recommend GMF to anyone looking to buy a bike, parts or for service!
If i could give a no star rating to this place, i would. Very impersonal. Kid answering phone was absolutely no help. Pure lazy. In the store even worse. Sat and browsed for a good 30 min and not one person out of the 3 that were there came to offer any assistance whatsoever. Surprisingly there were people coming in and out that they were chumy with. To me as a consumer this was by far one of the worst places I've been in. You all need some people skills. Sad. I could keep going. Just shaking my head now. Those who praised this place are crazy
I personally have never been to their shop. A friends son who was recently released from prison last week, was out job searching. He had a flat on his bicycle by Grey Matter and went in. When he explained his situation and his loss for what to do, somebody at Grey Matter gave him two tubes for free. I have no idea of the cost but it was way more than the young man has I'm sure. Thank you on his behalf and thank you on my behalf for restoring a small portion of my faith in humanity. May it be returned to you a thousand fold!
We ended up doing a 75 days stint in Scottsdale last year and someone suggested going to Grey Matter to buy a used bike. The staff was fantastic to work with, they cared about what we were looking for versus selling us the highest ticket item. They customized and cleaned up some bikes for myself and my wife. They even helped us purchase a pull behind to include our 2.5 year old on the bike rides. The fact they also do so much for charity speaks to the character of the business and the staff.
Loved coming to this place until today. I’ve watched it positively grow as a business, but the warm feeling of a family and charity based bike shop they used to be has diminished. Overall customer service lacked personality and people skills. No suggestions, no explanations, not even able to hold a conversation on how to build a bike. Disappointed how a person can be completely ignored watching it firsthand. Unfortunately, I cannot look at this place the same again. smh.
Wonderful to find a bike shop with knowledgable staff (Randy is awesome) and the ability to fix as opposed to replace a bike. Skilled mechanics with a passion for their craft are a rarity in today's economic climate. Find a new bike or salvage your old investment. Shop is filled with accessories as well as both new and old parts. Don't buy a bike (or throw away and old one) without stopping here first and talking to them. They are generous with their knowledge.
In town for riding with some work on the side. Needed some help and got it. First attempt didn’t resolve my issue (new bike looseness & a tick). Stopped back in a few hours later and was very impressed and happy with the outcome. Incredible customer service and dogged determination. Kitty is a nice addition and she has a great attitude, too. Keep up the great work, gents! Hope to see you again and find out if Kitty’s wrenching yet!!!
Brought in my bike since the latches were loose and I am not the most savvy with repairs. The associate that helped me was FANTASTIC! He showed me what he fixed and what I needed to do to correct it myself if I needed to. He also installed a bottle cage in a good spot that wouldn't adversely affect the folding nature of the bike. Amazing service from standup folks. I can't recommend them enough.
I don’t write reviews. I am lazy. I walked in on a Monday am, i needed help rebuilding a tubeless wheel. I had everything i needed but the know how and experience. Eric grabbed my stuff , explained every step . I paid a few dollars and i walked out a happy customer. I may even try to fix my next one on my own. They did not make any money on me today. But they earned a customer today. Thank you.
Really nasty customer service answered simple questions with an i could care less attitude. Would not agryto take my bike in for brake bleed 1 week out only would take it the day of, which would be fine but im a small business owner and also have to open a shop during normal business hours. They also would not update their business hours on google(takes 2 minutes) horrible phone matters!
WOW! Got Memories are the best! They converted VHS tape to digital on a USB flash drive in a rush for a family reunion. I called about 5 companies around Phoenix, crazy prices, long turn time, then called Got Memories and wow what a difference. Great price, quick turn time, really boosted my confidence in trusting a company with my precious family memories!!! Thank you!!!
LOVE these folks! A rare find in the world of bike shops. They've got a great selection of gear, along with an impressive batch of new and used bikes. I was visiting from the east coast and the staff was patient, polite and respectful. Got what I needed and learned a thing or two about desert riding. Grey Matter Family is now my go-to bike shop whenever we're in PHX.
Great vibes from the shop. Everyone I have interacted with has been very pleasant. The shop title is exactly what you get when you walk in the door all family. Had a basic brake service which was a huge improvement. Monday dropping the bike off for a full service (Bar 42 to 44s swap with new tape, cassette, chainrings, chain, brake pads and rotors)
This shop is seriously amazing!!! I dont say this lightly these guys are the kindest most informed and earnest bike shop around! They really came through for me today when my daughters bike tires went flat on our morning ride! I felt acknowledged and very well taken care of. I will be highly recommending them to anyone I know in need bike help!
GMF is 100% recommended! Superior customer service. This shops stands out from the rest and has a heartfelt story behind the doors. The team worked on my Felt F1 carbon road bike and it now rides like new. I cannot thank the team enough for keeping my race bike on the road The shop has everything you need and more!Keep up the good work guys!
Great shop. Straight shooters. They continue to impress and I'm so pleased to have a great mtb shop in N Central Phx again. I had a sprocket fall off my derailleur and smartly they keep a bone yard of bike parts like a crate of rear derailleurs. How cool to find my little sprocket & bolt and get my bike up and running again quickly.
Great shop with knowledgeable, skilled, and helpful workers. Eric a wealth of knowledge, and Mike, Brandon and DJ great mechanics. If they don't have it, they can get your part quickly, and always at a fair price. Heck, the owner Mike even went out of his way to special order a tap to fix my brake hose fitting. Highly recommended.
These guys are awesome! Service is right on and they have stock parts that other don't. They are very easy to deal with and good customer service is a focus for them. Help from the very knowledgeable Eric on parts and wrenching by a solid crew. Thanks to Brandon for all the help with the bike and endless questions! cheers fellas!
These guys are good mechanics and got good stuff to buy. I dropped my bike off and they ran through it, rebuilt my rear shock , cleaned up my headset , tuned the dropper post , brakes, put air in my tires, and tuned up the rear derailleur. I had my bike back less than 6 hrs after I dropped it off ! These dudes rock !
Couldn't be happier with them. I showed up on a busy Saturday (Pivot was there for demo day) and Dylan took my bike to make, what happened to be for him, an easy fix. From the phone call to Dylan servicing my bike, an absolutely great experience!! Great atmosphere and a great story how this bike shop started too.
Went in with a used bike than needed some work. They were not smug or pretentious like some bike shops. They looked it over and made some suggestions on fixes. It took a couple days, but they were up front about the time needed to look up parts. This is now my go-to for bike repairs.
These guys were great! They found an old Bianchi and built a great setup for my Wahoo Kickr and tuned it perfectly! Great work, extremely reasonable and easy to work with. I came back later and bought an awesome Kuat bike rack. Sturdy and reliable. Great recommendation. Thanks guys!
This review is simple. I could not get the tire on my 26" x 4" wheel to seat properly with the intertube inside. Tried a lot. Had someone else try. Nothing. I brought it to this shop. Guy was done in about 5 minutes. As far as it concerns me, I will always go here. Always.
Was assured our bike was going to be ready to go by Friday afternoon as we were leaving town for an extended time. By Friday afternoon, the bike hadn't been looked at. We picked the bike up, without the work being done and brought it home. Will look for another bike shop.
I disagree with other reviewers- perhaps the guys at Grey Matter won’t pester you, but they’re friendly and they’ll help if you need it. It’s a really casual environment with great prices and selection of extra parts, which is why I travel a few extra miles to go to GM.
I was only in town for a week and needed some used parts to whip-up a bike to use for a few days. I’m thankful grey matter had some used parts and a crew of goofy bike nerds to banter with while picking some parts. Hopefully I can give these folks business again.
Erik and his crew always provide the best customer service! I highly recommend them for all service and bike relate needs. Erik always knows how to get people on awesome bikes without breaking their budget. If you are shopping for a bike ask for Erik or Mikey.
What can I say, Randy is amazing. I took in a tandem bike that I have had for many years to GMF. Randy tuned up the bike, changed the tires and tubs and had us on the road the next day. Not only did Randy fix our bike, he told us a great bike path to take.
Ebike-friendly and a nice store. Came in for a flat repair and my hub motor and Gates belt didn't scare them off! Have a fair collection of new bikes (mostly cross-country and hybrid with some performance) and bins of all sorts of used parts (new too).
The staff is very helpful, respectful, and a pleasure to do business with. I didn’t purchase my there, and that didn’t matter. They still helped me, gave me a few recommendations and serviced my bike. I will most definitely return for my bike needs.
It's been an amazing experience connecting with Eric And Dillan who sorted my son's bike in no time... I definately will be back for my daughter's bike too. I saw so many other bikes in the store that I got an idea to get my own from them.
Jason (& everyone else I've dealt with there) is very knowledgeable & helpful! They're all super nice and your $ goes to the Barrow Neurological Institute! I've now bought 2 bikes from them! Thank you guys & keep up the great work! :)
Amazing bike shop with awesome, knowledgeable staff! The gentleman by the name of Branden went above and beyond with his customer service. They definitely got a customer for life! This place is an asset to the Phx cycling community.
Less than thrilled about the tune up I received last month. Gear shifting is worse than it was when i dropped it off. They also did a terrible job on my handle bar tape. I will go to one of the many other bike shops in the future.
Great Shop for repairs. The team is awesome. They always take great care of me when I need some service. They have everything you could need to get your bike back up and running. Shout-out to Brandon who is always super helpful.
I dropped my bike off for a whole bunch of work that needs to be done. They were very helpful in showing me what I needed. They have a fast turnaround for maintenance. I should be getting it back either Thursday or Friday.
First time bringing my bike in for work today and very quick, professional, and affordable. Just needed a new chainring, and it was all done in about an hour for under 30 bucks. Their cause is worth supporting as well!
Awesome bike shop. Staff is super helpful and knowledgeable. Prices are good and the parts selection is great even during the parts shortage. If you haven't tried them already give them a chance, You won't regret it.
The staff was great! They were able to match us with two used bikes and they updated them so they are almost like new. They did a great job with the bikes and we have enjoyed riding them around the canals of Phoenix!
David and every1 that works here are so friendly and helpful. They have everything in stock and the customer service is so awesome, they will help you find what your looking for. I love my new beach cruiser !
Shop employees were awesome. Made an appointment and they were on-time and did amazing work on the problem I had. Will definitely come back. Brandon was a great help and took care of my bike. Thanks guys!
Had a very good experience buying a couple of beach cruiser bikes. Great inventory. Upbeat and helpful sales guy. Overall good experience and a fun time. This will be my local bike shop. Recommend.
Great local bike shop. Super helpful and took their time to teach me some basics to help me maintain my bike! Will definitely be back for all my bicycle needs. Extra stars for two cute bike Dogs.
Brought in a new bike to me, the guys walked through the bike, told me all about it and got it ready to go and only charged me for the sealant in the tubes. Great shop, wouldn't go anywhere else
The staff is friendly and knowledgeable. I had a slight problem with communication with one employee, however they did a great job at customer recovery. I will definitely go back for service.
Just a great place. Just left there and trust these guys to take care of my bike. Nice to have an honest bike shop that genuinely want to help you. Especially as a newer rider. Thank you!
Our whole family bought bikes here last Saturday...2 adults and three kids. The staff was awesome and made the whole experience really fun. Prices were reasonable...definitely recommend!
They converted my sons mtb to tubeless and rebuilt my 2008 gary fisher paragon from the ground up. Both are even more awesome than they were before. Best bike shop in the valley.
Great Bike shop with very friendly, and amazing service. They really make you feel welcome, and part of the family. Check out their website for more on their awesome story.
This has always been an awesome bicycle shop. Good prices on new items and great prices on used stuff. Great staff and a great back story, you have to check it out!
Went to get a new back tire. It needed to be ordered but I was called right away when it came in. It was also installed for a reasonable price. Will go there again
The guys there are very customer oriented. Great service and they have no problem taking time to educate you on bikes and equipment. That's why I keep going back.
I was looking for a break cable for my mountain bike, and a very nice man found the specific cable I needed! They are non-profit. I will be back!
Amazing place! Thank you for fixing my Son's bike. I live in Maricopa Az ❤ It was a long drive getting to your store but all worth it.
Great experience, friendly staff, I’ll definitely be back. I’m looking forward to tagging along for a group ride sometime as well.
Best bike shop! Great service and friendly and knowledgeable. Used parts bins to dig through. Found great deals and a bike!!!
Great atmosphere and genuine people. Best bike shop for quality, honest service. Love to support GMF to carry on the legacy!
Great Local Bike Shop offering New and used. Now selling E Bikes. Good selection of parts. Providing Tune ups and Service.
Incredibly friendly staff and they're all super knowledgeable. Their breakfast is to drool over. Need a bike? Check it out
This crew is competitively priced, always faster than they say, AND they donate to charity. Love my local bike shop …
Had a couple of quick but great experiences at GMF Bike shop. Will definitely take my current and any future bikes here.
They were friendly and fixed my bike very fast the same day with parts that weren't over priced; very happy! Thank you!
So glad I found this bike shop. Reasonable prices. They trued my rim. Will be back to support with more purchases.
Even if you are not a serious bike person by any means.. they are very helpful and friendly. Good work, cool shop.
Great knowledge of bikes and customer service is excellent... Great place to have your bike serviced....
A great place to have your bike worked on. Very experienced, very knowledgeable, great customer service
Super helpful and kind. Sorted my issue out really quickly which was so great of them. Highly recommend
The nicest guys you’ll ever meet! 10/10 recommend this bike shop.
