A nice place for a walk with wide pathways and a bench or two hidden in there somewhere. You're likely to see roos if the weather/time of day is right. The tracks around the borders are backed on to by houses, but if you "cut in" when you see a track heading into the forest, you'll forget you're in the suburbs and feel like Eltham 15 years ago (minus the horses!) Note: there are no pets allowed as it's run as a reserve, and the entrances are the "1 at a time" type that keep unwanted bikes and pets out. These may also be uncomfortable or may not work for very obese people, and are impassable for a wheelchair or mobility scooter.

We went there in the late afternoon looking for wild kangaroos after some online research. It's around 1 hour from Melbourne cbd via public transport. We were lucky to find many kangaroos. There were cockatoos as well, but we didn't find many bird species. It isn't big and you can cover the trails easily in 1.5 to 2 hrs max. The place has washrooms and drinking water at the entrance. Highly recommended if you want to see kangaroos in the wild closer to the city.

A small bushy park with pathways throughout. As it is a nature reserve, dogs are not permitted in the main park area. Also the gateways are restrictive. If you have mobility restrictions I would not recommend this park. A wheelchair would not get through the gate that is designed to keep out foxes and other predators. Also the pathways are quite rutted so you need to watch your step. Having said all that, the park is pretty and makes you feel like you are in the bush.

  • Rachel Winter

Needs better care taken. Stop dropping rubbish here and broken glass is everywhere, it's a real shame. Otherwise it's lovely to have this stunning bush Oasis here, full of wildlife. There were kangaroos mere metres from the front gate, and birdlife absolutely abounded. Definitely lorikeets and magpies, but I think we saw a bush stone Curlew or similar. Still such a shame there is so much broken glass all over the forest floor.

This place is a little hidden gem - you don’t have to get too far inside the gate before it feels like you’re really out bush. Only the distant traffic or occasional helicopter gives it away. We visited midday so no roo sightings, but lots of rosellas, skinks, and the distinctive sound of pobblebonks from the billabong.

Great walking/running track! though I wasnt fortunate enough to see any kangaroo, literally walked around for 4 hours without seeing one, it was still a nice day out. Found an echidna though. super cute Update: so I came back twice and actually had to go through the gate to the “habitat link” to find the roos. There are still few of them in the main reserve but very hard to find during the day

A peaceful forest filled with Birdlife and wildlife in suburbia. Any time of the day you're likely to see kangaroos and hear kookaburras. Walking the tracks is very peaceful. A great place to spend some quiet reflection time. Gates are for pedestrians only to keep the wildlife in, so no vehicles or strollers can be taken in. Might have to contact parks Vic about getting wheelchair access.

  • Casey Stuckey

It looks like it would be nice once your in the reserve however it’s not child friendly, the tiny entrance gate does not allow normal to large size prams through even folded down which meant I couldn’t go for a walk with my child. The toilet block was full of graffiti cans and other rubbish and was out of toilet paper. The barbecue area was clean and tidy but the playground is quite aged.

  • Nomyen

Can take a bus to reach .It is an ideal spot to go for a nature walk, birds and kangaroos. And do not forget to close the gate every time. And the point where you can meet the kangaroo family is the Habitat link track where you can find kangaroos sleeping and eating grass in groups.

I went on a first date here. We walked for an hour along the extensive forest track network chatting. We saw an echidna, a whole family of kangaroos and a tree that looked like an alien. Then we sat on a park bench and made out for ages. Gresswell Forest is the perfect place to take someone on a first date... It's also 'technically' covid safe since it's outside.

  • Mark Aidan

Very impressed, had a very enjoyable time. Great natural bushland to walk around. Plenty of different bird and frog (near the billabong) sounds. I imagine some of the tracks could get very slippery when wet, but hey it's supposed to be natural. Greenwood Reserve off the main road links to the forrest and has toilets, bbq, seating and drinking fountain.

  • Mendo Vasilevski

Great place to take the kids to get in touch with nature, in the suburbs! Watch them transform into curious kids. Even has a playground outside. Kangaroos, possums and lots of birds. Free exploration right at your door step. Some messy people do spoil it from time time with glass bottles. Anyhow. Go inside and see how big it is!

  • Iri-Mae Aotearoa

Lovely parkland Good to see bicycles are not allowed into the reserve Very intetesting to see tipee's made from fallen branches Parkland needs a decent pond, the 1 along Billabong trk looked terrible & possibly nothing living in it because of the dull greyish merky coloured pond water! Great for walking around

  • Amie Allford

This is a beautiful place to spend a day. There are walking trails that are easy to follow and there are lots of benches dotted around to rest on. There is a car park next to a playground with a BBQ shelter and some public toilets. There is a lovely creek with lots of frogs to listen to.

  • Raj Parasuraman

This reserve is perfect for a weekend bushwalk. Lots of greenery, chirping birds & a walk in the woods made it a very calming experience. The kids loved it as well. One thing to note for those with prams. You can't take the pram through the tiny entrance but can pass it over the gate.

  • Deanne Goh

This has got to be my favourite place to take a short walk, hear and see beautiful birds, see the rabbits and kangaroos. I love the smell of the trees, the sound of the frogs, birds and cicadas. Lots of insects and sticks to keep the kids entertained while walking too.

  • Russ Dalton

You can see a lot of wildlife, main interior trails are gravel and in good condition. Boundary track is not maintained well and consists of hard packed clay with grass patches growing into it. Must carefully watch your fitting while running the boundary track!

  • Robyn Corson

As a family one of our favourite places to go. You can catch sight of kangaroos if you are lucky. We love going on weekdays. You usually only see a few people over hours.

If you're looking to see kangaroos, go here. Really nice walk around, quiet, and we probably saw around 30+ kangaroos just wandering around which was fun. We also got an opportunity to take a picture with one which was just hanging out on the path.

  • Eee

The park is cute ....but what's odd is that there's a tent ⛺ hidden I assume where someone sleeps... So definitely wouldn't recommend going there at night ....

It's a great place to go for great long slow walk kangaroos are common but nice and peacefully kids went one time at nearing sundown and it poured down they got scared when their uncle scared the heck out of them being me thought it was funny

  • Mary

A fenced, environmentally protected nature park with gravel and unsealed pathways through the forest. If you are lucky, and at certain times of the day, you may spot a kangaroo or even a family of roos in this forest. In the centre of the

Amazing reserve! Main paths are pram friendly. I visit with my two kids (aged 1-4) regularly. They can run wild and we see different wildlife each time we visit. There are toilets and a playground near the Greenwood Dr entrance.

  • Neal

Came up on the train to run all the trails in Gresswell Forest Reserve. Loved it. Great to be able to get some bush trails so close to the city. Parks Victoria do a great job of maintaining the reserve. well worth a visit.

  • Matt Malone

Went for a walk to get out of the house due to COVID. My wife told me about this area and it was incredibly peaceful and clean. We came across a small mob, which I genuinely wasn't expecting on my Saturday afternoon walk.

  • Kelly Mutch

A beautiful tiny slice of wild. Great to see endemic species like Bulbine bulbosa and the little Vanilla lilies making a come back also a good spot to hide and have affair like I did because I’m dishonest to my partner

  • Lois Bedson

We love it here. You can see kangaroos, fungi, native orchids and jump little creeks and follow tracks or bush bash across the reserve. There are public toilets and a car park near the entrance on Greenwood drive.

  • Saul Carnegie

Not bad for a suburban habitat area. Lots of walking paths. No dogs or bikes allowed. Close to 2 playgrounds and a golf course.

I recommend the Sunday 19am nature walk. Got a better understanding on how brittle a habitat is to culturalisation by man inevitable in suburbia. But the Forrest is well taken care of and looks wonderfull. More

Not too bad. A cute little spot to get away from things. Trails are quite small and definitely not a challenge. Some construction noise nearby which sucks. But other than that it's a nice little area.

  • Tony Bellis

A great place to visit for a "bush" walk, plenty of open space and if your lucky wildlife. Good gradient throughout the area making it an easy walk, with crushed rock on the walkway paths.

It's a calm and quiet place away from the hustle and bustle of the town. Safe place that you can roam around with your family. There are only a few kangaroos, but we could see only one.

  • Ruby DHG

In this park you can see kanguros after walking just 5/10 min into the forest! A great place to go near the city when you want to introduce kanguros to people visiting you overseas.

  • Taylor Hyslop BoganRobot

If only those redgums could talk. This place has birdlife, kangaroos, wildflowers, an old lunatic asylum, bee hives, creeks, trails, and BBQs. Really great place for adventures.

  • Helen Kiddell

We love coming here with our little kids (3 & 5) for bushwalks. We love spotting birds, kangaroos, flowers and "bunyip houses". Such a great treasure of a place in the suburbs.

  • Kiran K

Nice grounds for a walk. Look out for "nature walk Gresswell Forest" on Eventbrite. The volunteer guide is friendly and informative- He took us for a walk off the beaten path

Enclosed area yet very spacious and open, has kangaroos and the odd kookaburra. Great for a trek, kids really enjoyed the vibe of a forest without the need to travel far

Gresswell Forest is located in Watsonia. This is a natural reserve where you can see Kangaroo at close distance. But be sensitive to them. Generally they won't harm you.

  • erika blufstein

I went for a few hours only to see kangaroos and I could see a few of them. I can't believe that you can see them free in a park in the middle of a city. That so good!

  • Angus Booth

Good old river red gums, abundance of exocarpos cruciformis, eastern greys, noisy bloody birds everywhere, quiet ones too, eg.Wonga Pigeon (Leucosarcia melanoleuca

  • Stella on Gmail

There are many different paths to take along this popular nature reserve and you may even run into a few kangaroos on the way. Plus maybe even see an echidna.

  • S Chitta

Nice place close to the heart of the city and yet a Bush land with all the native animals in a secure area, ideal for a Bush walk with peace and tranquillity.

  • Tharindu Wijekoon

This is a decent place to see kangaroos around Melbourne but it is not ideal due to the thick vegetation. But this place is still great for a run or hike.

  • Bivash Barua

Great for Adventure, Walk, birdwatching, serenity... Has bbq at the park outside the reserve gate .. the gate to enter the reserve is little tricky …

  • Dumi Jay

It was great. A quick and easy escape. The boundary route kind of reduced the nature experience due to nearby buildings. The trail in the middle is 8/10.

  • Rhys C

I love that we live near greswell. Walking through here you will see kangaroos 95% of the time and feel like you have escaped somewhere up near Kinglake

  • Sam Gorfine

Little haven amongst suburbia. Dogs are not allowed, though the park entrance on Greenwood Drive has a great secluded spot to throw a ball to your dog

  • Francesca Arena

This place is magical. I love my forest. Beautiful place to visit with weekly activities (check on website) Australian wildlife at your doorstep..❤

  • Edward Blake

Umm, not really a nature reserve. Just a fenced in collection of trees. Only nature I saw was a vicious looking beehive in the middle of the path.

  • Bronya Laskovsky

Lovely park next to the nature reserve. Has a bbq, play equipment, a shelter and toilets. Big grass expanse for running around or walking the dog.
