I am a mothet of 4 sons, all 5 & 1/2 to 6 years apart. My youngest has never been in trouble for any misconduct other than talking, and I like to think he comes by that natural, although we do instruct him otherwise when it comes to the classroom. My husband and myself are nearly 50 years of age and we strictly enforce and encourage education and our faith. My son remained the top three in his class all through elementary and was even scouted for magnet schools because of his academic ability and his scores on the STAR exams. He has been in Medrano all of 5 weeks and has been attacked on the bus, kcicked off for a week and we do not have transportaion so he had to walk with other students who were kind enough to accompany him to and from school. Not only that, but now he has been attacked from behind, hit in the back of the head with a binder and suspended for two days for consentual fighting. We do not condone bullying, fighting or disrespect of authority figures. However, we have taught our son not to pay attention to trouble makers, but in the event he feels threatened or in a situation where he may have to defend himself we have assured him we would prefer that he do so if neccessary. Currently I do not know whether the other child is a freshman, 7th or 8th grader, but how would the families of the victims of 9-11 feel if our government had not retaliated in the name of justice? I don't know what philosophies or ethics are enforced at Medrano Middle School, but while my son suffers consequences behind an act of violence on his person and his response to that threat will by no means cause us to believe he did anything more than perhaps the same person who informed me of this. He will not suffer consequences for fighting when he did not warrant such an act upon himself. Maybe its even worse than that! Perhaps staff cannot sustain or control our youth? I wonder what Francisco "Pancho" Medrano himself would think about all this?
