Nice little park in a nice little area. It has a few benches and places to lay on the grass. Plenary of shade as well. They have a few flower patches that get a lot of insect life which is fun to catch and snap some photos of. They do seem to have a lot of homeless people hanging around but they try and hid so they stay out of the way. Defiantly a cool spot to check out if you are on a walk but nothing to make a special trip for.
Enjoy your first encounter with First Encampment Park found in the heart of 1700 South. You'll find the roaming paths soothing as the musical beats from passersby pound into your soul. The traditions and the greenery are vibrant, and the stream is well contained— removing all drowning hazard for your kids as they play in the park. As Pocahantas said, "Every rock...has a life, has a spirit, has a name." And so does this Park.
It's a pile of rocks. The rocks are a metaphor for the resilience and strength of the "pioneers" (read: White people that claimed it using the oft used "MINE! I TOTES SAW ITS FIRST Y'ALL!" ala Columbus et al) that settled this valley...As far as piles of rocks go, I've seen better but it's all in the eye if the beholder, I suppose. Imma give it ***** because, rocks.
This is not really a park when I think of a park. It's more of a monument. I don't recall any seating (on further investigation, there is a little seating area), and there is no grass even though the monument speaks about the location having 6 to 10' tall grass when the Mormons arrived. It's nice to have historical information throughout the area.
It's nice that history is recognized and made accessible to the public. The park itself is a welcome representation of nature in the middle of a neighborhood. My kids had fun climbing on the rocks for about 20 minutes, but then there wasn't much else to do.
Cool history and good park to relax in. My son loved climbing on the rocks. Very clean and drug free compared to most parks in the city, though I did pick up and throw away a needle cap and a homemade pen tube meth pipe.
A nice little historical park, good for a quick visit with kids. No parking at it but you can get some food and free ice cream at the Artic Circle and walk the short distance (thanks to another reviewer for the idea).
I love all the rocks and the landscaping is awesome. It would be even more awesome is they added waterfalls to the landscaping to go with all the rocks. Cool and chill place. Loves you all. Asalaam peace
I often stop here on evening walks to sit on the benches under the trees and just relax and enjoy nature. The park is clean and near Arctic Circle where you can get courtesy ice cream cones.
Short little stop I had no idea was there. As an adult I'm finding that I enjoy history and I understand it more, than when I was younger.
This is where the First Encampment of Pioneers stayed in the valley when they first arrived. A very important location in Western History.
Just the right place to rest and take a break. It's amazing it's right in the middle of the city. We need more green spaces like this!
All my years of living in Utah I have never visited this park I am glad I took a few minutes to walk through and read the history.
Great we'll maintain and clean. Just be careful we have seen some needles and crack pipes in the mornings while walking our dogs.
It's all about the water baby. Up and down between 200 e a nd 300 e there were the only fresh water springs in the valley.
I love history! This site gives greater appreciation for how some of the early saints struggled and lived their lives.
Very small park which is full of rocks. Not much to see. There are a few benches and perhaps a historical plaque.
Really nice, small park. It has a rich history and is a must see on any historical tour! Fun for kids to play on
I was on my walk for the day and I needed a place to sit. This was perfect place for that. Cute little park.
super little pocket park that shows the names of the first white settlers in the valley.
I love learning about the history of our great city. Here is a neat place to start.
Fun little place to sit on a summer day. There are some gutsy squirrels and rats.
Just passed through but was a nice place to stop on my way to my bus transfer
Its small but so beautiful. Nice spot to read and catch a few thoughts
We enjoyed our quiet visit to the park. It has a nice shady area.
Really nice park, but so tiny! I couldn’t find a place to park.
Cool little corner park . No playground or any parking lot .
Just the right place to rest and take a break.
