"This poor review is really on in reference to their COVID policies"
"Looking for second hand books in the NDG area? Then you should surely visit ENCORE BOOKS (get it?)…there is a fairly extensive collection of books and LP records available for purchase and reasonably good prices"
"A good bet for selling most of your used books, just don't expect to get more than 20% of the sticker price"
"This is an Amazing store! Such good vibes for a bookworm like myself lmao"
"After calling Dustin, I brought them 12 Hardcover recent bestsellers ( practically brand new) by authors such as Ken Follett and David Baldacci, worth over $500 new , to see how much they would offer"
This poor review is really on in reference to their COVID policies. I've visited several times before and found their selection to be stellar, and the service fine. Their 1 customer at a time limit is warranted and fair. Their 10 minute per customer limit is entirely reasonable given the circumstances. It is, however, a shame that the clerk seemed to have no desire to enforce that limit. After 40 minutes spent outside, and asking on three separate occasions without receiving so much as a verbal response from the store employee, I left. During that wait 10 other potential customers came and went. I went to the cafe across the street for a coffee, and while I drank it another 20 minutes passed with no change. I hope that customer bought a lot of books, but when I left they still had none in their hands. Edit as I can't respond to the owner's response in a separate post: 1) The employee poked his/her head out and waved at me. He was very aware that I was there 2) The customers who came and went did not enter the store. They waited outside with us for several minutes before getting frustrated and leaving 3)The customer was browsing books. I can confirm that they were perusing the shelves and picking them up. 4) This 1 star review did not effect your average rating. It was an accurate representation of the service offered by your store as, despite being first in line for an hour, I was not able to access the services because your employee was unwilling to enforce your advertised policy. If more poor ratings show up and your average rating does wind up decreasing then that is on you, not me.
Looking for second hand books in the NDG area? Then you should surely visit ENCORE BOOKS (get it?)…there is a fairly extensive collection of books and LP records available for purchase and reasonably good prices. Books are organized by genre and most of the "usual suspects" are in place (history, biography, graphic novels, romance, etc..) as well as a fairly large collection of classics and/or old print books. Note that the shelves are deep and frequently there are another row of books behind the forward facing set so dig deep. On site staff are overall knowledgeable and have a good handle on their inventory. Enjoy!
A good bet for selling most of your used books, just don't expect to get more than 20% of the sticker price. Encore Books is great for an afternoon of digging for that elusive item on your list. However, the way the shop is set up makes it difficult to comfortably browse for the sky-high books and hard to reach records. Luckily, the kind staff can help you find what you're looking for. Overall, the record selection was exciting. Lots of great soundtrack albums, along with jazz and rock albums to round out your collection. A lot of them were on sale for 3/$10. This quirky shop is definitely worth a visit!
This is an Amazing store! Such good vibes for a bookworm like myself lmao. They have sooooooo many books! Most of the books are in English, but yr hey do have many french books. The books and vinyls outside are 1$, and the books inside (that I saw) are maximum 10$. I'm not sure abt the prices for the vinyls inside though... The workers were super helpful and nice, and spoke English. Very well organized, even in alphabetical order. They have books, games, vinyls, DVDs, CDs, toys, pins, and postcards. Highly recommend!
After calling Dustin, I brought them 12 Hardcover recent bestsellers ( practically brand new) by authors such as Ken Follett and David Baldacci, worth over $500 new , to see how much they would offer. The owner said $12 for all 12. I gave them as a gift to the Jewish General Hospital the same day. Business is business but if they take advantage of someone like me I can only imagine how they treat needy clients. Is this establishment a pillar of the community or a second rate pawn shop?
The selection is incredibly vast and a bit overwhelming even. You can easily spend the whole afternoon perusing the tall wall-to-wall shelves packed from the floor to the ceiling. There are many vintage book sections with Folio, Easton, Franklin, Harvard Classics and so on as well as rare and first editions. That said, there aren't many bargains to be had as most books are fairly valued (unlike other used bookstores where you can pick up really nice items at ridiculously low prices).
I want to like this place because it is local and the staff members are nice. It is important to note that my review concerns the record side of the business. The record inventory they hold is very thin, and the records they do have are generally in a condition that I would not put on my turntable. They have much less in choice in their new records section than they did maybe 5 years ago. I think that their book selection is now the primary reason to visit this shop.
Quaint and friendly neighbourhood book shop. Plenty of secondhand books in plenty of genres. Lots of used DVDs for sale, too. I go for the selection of vinyl. You will find a gem on occasion if you're willing to dig. The second hand stuff is not really kept in order and it's a bit overwhelming but if you have time on a rainy Sunday, it's worth a look. They also have a couple racks of new vinyl, which runs eclectic if not a tad pricey.
I recently started a book series, finished the first and could not find the second anywhere, even Amazon would be weeks! I thought "now is time to support a local shop more than ever." I reached out and they not only had the book -at a great price- but a million others, vinyls, and sweet t shirts. Please keep places like this alive. Sadly, they are a vestige of a bygone era but an important community space all the same.
Amazing place filled with every kind of book imaginable. With COVID, they only allow one person inside at a time (understandable given it is quite a small space) and you are given a 10 minute browsing/purchasing time. Since these measures are in place, I highly recommend knowing which exact authors/titles you are looking for because 10 minutes isn't long enough to go through all the novels available!
Great selection of books. Cozy. Rare finds. Good location. But staff is unfriendly. I felt like I was in their way. In this kind of establishment, I like to be able to ask questions and feel a connection with staff. The layout is crowded. Aisles are tight. Top shelf books are too high to reach, but staff felt unapproachable to ask for help.
Excellent little store with a big selection of vinyl LPs - both new and used; some of the old stuff is really new and never played - and a fantastic selection of used books. Prices start at $4.95: 3 of the 4 albums pictures cost 4.95 and the other cost 7.95 - all were is pristine shape and I wonder if they have ever been played.
By far the best used book shop in the greater Montreal area. Knowledgable, kind, friendly, helpful staff. Superbly curated selection. So many times I have found volumes I needed to complete a set. If I can make just one suggestion to them it would be to add more lighting in the store so we can more clearly see book spines!
Good used bookstore. Lots of books and other goodies like vinlys and comic books. You do have to go through the stacks although the place is well organized. They have a decent section for vintage or rarer books. Prices are fair and staff friendly. Highly recommend, perfect for an afternoon of browsing.
Had a great time browsing the massive collection of books, covering many genres. Collectors of specific editions of specific books, a definite destination. Tight spaces to move around but worthwhile. Vintage records throughout, LOTS to check out. Staff friendly, laid back and very helpful.
I love visiting encore bookstore, it’s a super cute little local spot that I can’t ever walk by without going in! I have found some real treasures there over the years, that I’m sure I wouldn’t have found anywhere else. The staff is super friendly and helpful, a real Montreal gem!
Last visited in Dec 2022. Has both books and records, fair selection but not what I was looking for. More of a generic lot. I believe I came a bad time. It was really busy and the aisles were extremely cramped only big enough for one. It was very difficult to get around people.
They seem more keen on holding onto their stock than flipping it. Everything there is overpriced. I'd pay half or two thirds of the asking prices. I moved to NDG 2 years ago and still see the same stock in the vinyl section, and the books aren't much better.
My favorite bookstore: a welcoming space full of literary and musical surprises. Here, temporarily homeless records and books find refuge between owners. Pay the store a visit. You'll leave with a smile and a volume or two tucked under your arm.
I love getting lost in their shelves. The staff is kind and knowledgeable. Books of all kind in French and English. I go there monthly to see what's been added to the comicbook shelves. I sell them back my old books when I am done with them.
In a world where used book stores are disappearing, NDG is lucky to have Encore. The shop is as funky as you would expect with books everywhere. They are well classified though and the sections are easy to learn. Staff are always pleasant
My favorite used bookstore Montreal. One of the best used bookstore Ive been visited, I might said. Rare and unique collections, books are display in a very neat order. The vinyl are also amazing selection. A must visited for a book geek!
One of the few last remaining used bookstores in Montreal. Like stepping into a time capsule. Huge selection of books, friendly staff, and just a lovely space to hang out and wander in. Definitely worth a visit if you're in the area.
One of my favorite stores in NDG. I collect vinyls, books and cds, and you can find some pretty good ones here. Sections are usually pretty well organized and you can find some gems for 1$ in the bins outside. Highly recommend :)
I sold them some of my old books. I had around 40 books, they took only 10 and give me 15$. They don’t take donations, so I end up leaving whit most of the books. The girl working there was super nice, friendly and polite.
An awesome used bookstore, great selection of French, English and rare books. Staff are incredibly helpful and willing to share their knowledge and experience. I will be making many returns to this gem of a store!
Absolutely amazing bookstore with great pricing of used books. Best thing is to find some hidden gems in the corners or something but ask for help as much as possible as you might get lost finding your books.
Such a great selection with unique finds and very fairly priced. I can't walk in without leaving with more than I came for. The staff is also super nice and helpful which makes the experience even better <3
This bookstore is so nice with huge collection of books and used vinyl records in addition to friendly staff :) I couldn't find french reggae records, but i found the vinyls of teenage "Ziggy" Marley :)
You can find a lot of great finds here for reasonable prices! The employees are super friendly and happy to help you out with whatever you need. I highly recommend coming here if you’re in the area!!
I love this place. Great range for a reasonable price. You can find a lot of stuff, mostly in English books, but they also have a French section and even a small section of books in other languages.
Great selection of books, Vinyl Records, CDs, DVDs and games! However, the price for goods (selling to them) is significantly lower than competitors (ex: 2$ for video games) …
Pretty good selection though the organization could use a refresh. I'm still rating it 4 stars because what they lack in organization, they make up for in selection and price. Definitely recommend
My favorite bokstore in Montréal! You can find recent and old New Yorker magazines at reasonable prices. Good book selections in English and in French. If you're at that area it's worth a visit!
Good book selection at a discount! And the service was great. The gentleman ( long dark hair) was such a great help! Definitely going back there! And pls support business in your neighborhoods.
I didn't find what I came here for, but found some very interesting books very much in line with my out of the norm search criterias. I very much liked my first impression of this place!
Their vinyl is overpriced. Books-wise, there's a good selection in many genres, although the prices are a bit arbitrary. There's also a section with comics and one with books in French.
Cozy atmosphere, friendly staff. The books are very well-organized. If you plan to sell your used books here though, just don't expect to get more than 20% of the original price.
Encore is the place to go to if you are looking for great books at great prices. They have such a great selection of books and music here that it really is a place for everyone.
GREAT shop! A little treasure trove, books , music, culture!! An awesome place to spend an hour on a rainy day. Very cool and retro, and human. Nothing digital! Real stuff here!
Love this place, you can always find an awesome gem hiding in the piles! Only problem is, depending on who's on shift, the staff is sometimes not very knowledgeable or helpful.
Fully stocked, knowledgeable and friendly staff. It's treasure trove of books and albums - you can never leave disappointed. And they take debit and credit as well as cash!
I really like going there to buy the type of books I enjoy reading which are mostly classics, non fiction and historical fiction. The guys there serving are also nice.
My absolute favourite secondhand bookstore of any city I’ve lived in. The selection is amazing and everything is very reasonably priced. I’d go every day if I could!
.the selection was good.it could of been improved But maybe their sales are very good..and I never know some people don't like to part with there books ,good prices
My nebourhood favorite store. I already found so many jewel books and audio CDs in the collection by the enterenc. Highly recommend for book and audio collections.
I am so very happy with my latest purchase. Left with a few treasures that included some Spanish books. The staff is so helpful and ready to help find a book.
Encore is fantastic. Used books, records, music sheets. You'll definitely find something that you're looking for. Strongly recommend that you check it out!
I went there too ! Service was better than before ! The lady was VERY nice, courteous. She gave me my money's worth. Going there, again. Coz they R good !
Always fun to walk through, looking for that special book or record. Nice to browse in the non-digital world. Staff is very helpful and knowledgeable.
Lots of selection if you have the time to browse, but it's really unorganized and cramped. Really cute store, friendly and knowledgeable staff.
I loved this place, they almost have any book you're looking for , many many records, you've got to check out this place if you love books!
Most eclectic and consistently interesting selection of records in the city. Great vibe. Great books as well! And great staff. Just great.
I went to 6 Montreal used book stores this past weekend. This one was by far the largest and the best. Also the only one worth a review.
Cool shop, crammed with great books organized in a sensible way. The person working (not sure if owner?) was very pleasant and helpful.
Love popping in occasionally to peruse, and check out the selections. Alot of the books are in good condition and well organized.
Dangerous place for book lovers. Be careful to get in and out, or you'll walk away with 10 pounds of books and an empty wait.
NDG staple. Has, somehow, improved over the years. Solid vinyl collection. Very well curated lit. Groovy vibes all around.
Always been one of my favourite book stores. The selection is always interesting and the staff is helpful and friendly.
Very cozy, a great place to grab a book or record when you don't know what your looking for. Here the books find you!
Wide selection of books well categorized. Nice music selection also. Warm service and helpful knowledgeable staff.
Sean bought a good part of my collection prior to my move. Very nice and flexible guy. Fair pricing. Recommended!
One of my favourite spots for quality used books. Tons of great academic texts in the $10 range. Great selection.
Great services. Did not find everything I was looking for, but bought other good books to have for my daughter.
Excellent bookstore...great customer service..young girl very friendly..seems like she read every single book
I love this little used book shop...my son and I often go there looking for rare finds and interesting reads
Worst customer service i have experienced in a long time, they are rude and sarcastic to bad in this economy.
Super cool shop with very wide selection of books, some great records too. Good luck leaving empty handed.
Huge selection of used books, nice vinyl and cd sections too. Prices are very accessible. Friendly staff.
Very cool little place. The kind you spend hours on.. Also, staff was extremely polite and cordial.
A family-run shop that buys & sells books & records in a cozy space with floor-to-ceiling shelves.
amazing place to look for books and records! great prices and great customers and people! 5 stars
Great used book/CD/vinyl shop with lots of gems inside. I try and go there as often as possible.
Great selection of books and comics no Toys but they do have some boardgames overall …
This place was such a gem. Will be back ready to spend all my money on more books and records!!
Good place to look for your favorite books- modern and classics. Competent and friendly staff.
Coool place, nice people that will help you with anything. Wide variety from records to books.
I love the vibe there. Huge selection of books and records. Very cool people working there.
i love this place just wish it was a bit more organized and easier to find different books
I do enjoy going in and discovering nee to me books and browsing. It's calm and quiet.
Great selection. Always find something unexpected/unique/exciting. Never disappointed.
Great place to get previously loved books. They also have used CDs, DVDs, and records.
Wonderful collection. You could easily spend many hours and only scratch the surface.
Cute little bookshop. A little overrun and not a lot of space, but cute nonetheless
Decent place. I go in to look at their vinyl regularly, good book collection also.
Great local book and record store with lovely staff and extensive book selection.
Super!! I'ts very complete in many collections and they're very kind and helpful!
Really like this store ...... Cool classic LP's..... Books ...magazines...comics

Great used book, music and dvd store in NDG. Great pricing and awesome finds.
A warm and comfortable place on any afternoon when you don't know what to do.
