I went to Elthorne from 2004-2009 and have very fond memories. True, the teaching quality may be several light-years away from what you'd get at a good school but the fun-factor more than made up for it! Random stampedes around the playground at lunchtime, DT lessons where the students would spend the whole time destroying the tables and their school equipment with the various tools and machines provided, music lessons where we'd create compositions solely consisting of 'DJ DJ DJ DIC DIC DIC DIC DIC DICTIONARY', the list could go on! And don't forget the danger aspect too; kids getting expelled for bringing in knives, the hooded gangs of youths loitering outside the school after the day was over and who could forget the frequent playground-fights. But fun and danger make good bedfellows (ed- or is it strange bedfellows?), and who could complain about that!
The School looks nice and feels like it could be somewhere were you want your son or daughter to go however it is not. It is generally because of the mix of good and bad teachers, especially the history and religious studies departments. The students who go there are a very mixed batch, one has starred in a documentary about being a part of a gang which murdered a boy to Oxford and Cambridge students. Do not get fooled on open evenings by the science department, that is what my son and I did. We were wowed by science instead of choosing a school with real potential. In conclusion I do not recommend this school due to A. The lack of good teaching staff B. The inability to control students C. They only got a 3 in of stead, the second worst grade that can be achieved. PS. It says my name is Sidn Hdi, that is incorrect, it is actually John Simons
I love this school and I never wanted to leave, but my amazing teachers helped me to get two unconditional offers, one at my first uni choice, so it's time to go. They have fantastic trips, like skii trips, PGL, the Snowdonia trip, and depending on your chosen language you can go on the Spanish, French or German exchange (I went on the Spanish and the French one!) And their results get better every year. It's a very young school but it's being nurtured by some great people. The headmaster is a bit dull, but he's very welcoming and approachable, as are most of the staff. Obviously not all teachers are agreeable, but if their performance was low they wouldn't be there. (Trust me, a lot of people "retired" when it came under new management) I highly recommend this school, so take a look around!
