My go to place for Mexican Seafood. Had family in town, so had to bring them to El Bucanero. Came early Saturday evening before the big dinner rush, so was able to get seated right away. Even when it's crowded, the line moves pretty quickly. They do a great job of getting people seated, served, and cleaned up for the next party. We had a party of 6, but they handle larger parties all the time. We were seated right away. Waiter immediately came to take the drink and appetizer orders. That came out within minutes and placed the main orders next. Most menu items are very large portions and probably best ordered family style. I've been here many times and try to order different items each time. This time was the Molcajete el Bucanero, Botana Mixta, Coco Loco, and Ceviche Hawaiano Tropical. The drink was the Michelada Bucanera. While waiting for your food, you can eat the tostada chips with the 3 different salsas on the table. They're very addicting and you'll quickly get full just eating the chips. The food is amazing every time. I've never ordered anything I didn't like. Seafood is extremely fresh every time and always presented nicely. Service is very fast and they're constantly checking on you throughout the meal. Highly recommend El Bucanero.for good seafood and good service.

Very friendly and courteous staff. There was no waiting for sitting. Very disappointed with the food. Ordered the fish plate. The lettuce in the salad was already starting to wilt. Looks like it was over a couple of days old. The rice was luke warm at best and no flavor at all to it. The portion of fish served was below average for the price that was paid for this platter. Again, like the rice, the fish had absolutely no flavor. It did not taste like fish. It was just a lump of white meat. No spices. For what was paid, this establishment can definitely afford to by spices to cook into the fish and other food items. If you are looking to drink lemonade, I would not recommend it. Even though this establishment does not say that the lemonade is made with fresh lemons, the customer should be advised that there lemonade is made with store bought lemon juice in a bottle. Another disappointment. The fries were already cold by the time we received our orders.

Overall disappointed this time! When we come to San Antonio it's a must to eat here. But Saturday that we when, full of disappointment! To begin where they sat us it was over crowded. Didn't have space to move. Also seems like the A.C. gave out! It was super hot you couldn't even enjoy the food. Third waitress took forever bringing drinks even refills! Four that made all of us super upset was all our food was out except for two of our little ones. I was trying to eat slow that way we can still eat when their food come out. And we asked her multiple times like where are the kiddos food. We even shared food from our plates to give them while they wait for their plates. She come around with two plates. One plate was correct the other was wrong. We needed to wait a bit more for the last plate! Not even i am sorry from our waitress. As a waitress my self! I was disappointed all around! Service atmosphere!

First, let me say the food was superb! Their menu is HUGE!! I thought there was no way that the food would be such high quality with so many items. I was wrong, all three of us at the table were super pleased with the food. The place is large and has ample space to spread out some. The decor was playful and Mexican "cantina-ish." Nice place to eat. Our server was helpful with the HUGE menu and guided us to dishes that we all enjoyed. My fried fish platter was one of the best I've eaten...period. Crunchy coating fully covered the light, flakey, and flavorful meat. Delish!! My only "ding" on the place was the lack of welcoming friendliness of the greeter/hostess. Not rude, just not making eye contact or giving more than a perfunctory "hello." Minor issue but a detractor nonetheless. My first time to visit, but not my last!!

Lived around this place for years and have been needing to go. Was invited by some family members who love the place. First time trying ceviche, was a very unique experience. The taste and texture were both a new and reminiscent experience and reminded me still of typical Mexican cuisine. The inside is huge. A lot of seating and space. This place must be the bee's knees during busy days (came Thursday night, was very light on patrons). They seem to have a walk up bar as well. The quesadilla norteña was interesting. A lot of grilled veggies (onions, peppers), cheese was pleasant. The sauces they have at the table gave an interesting experience as well. The mist try is the light orange one. Whew!

I do not have words of how great the food is here. The only complaint I have is that when you order a drink, be careful. They charge you everything separately. I ordered a ranch water, and they charged me like $7 for the Topo Chico and $7 for the tequila and then some additional for I have no idea what. Always ask how much your drink is going to cost you. Other than that, the food is amazing.

I wanted to impress my family coming from out of state, so decided to come here and give them some good seafood. To begin the temperature inside the restaurant was at 81f, I’m not sure why the think is ok to have everyone cramped and sweating maybe they want to sell more micheladas. You could not seat down without pushing the chairs from the tables next to you, the waiter messed half of our drinks and 2 of our meals. We were a party of 8. I understand places like this get very busy but is not cheap so you expect to have a good time and enjoy your meal. Our waiter did not deserve the 18% tip they automatic charged us. I was embarrassed by the whole experience since I was excited to show them this place since it was my idea.

If you're in San Antonio I highly recommend giving El Bucanero a try. Their seafood is very fresh, authentic and very good. They do usually have a wait during the weekend but in my experience they usually say one time and we end up waiting way less. In all honesty its worth the wait if you like seafood. The only reason I don't give it 5 stars is that I feel they need more staff during the weekend. We had to keep calling over our waiter if we needed something on these last 2 particular visits. Perhaps, more waiters for less tables ? However I do want to say in previous other visits it has been a great experience despite how busy it gets(these visits were way more busy than the above mentioned. ) When you leave give the churro truck a try (they are not affiliated.) The churros are so delicious and crunchy you'll want more!

  • R W

It was very busy today so I did take that into account. But we arrived, put our name on the list for a group of 7. We waited until they called us, but that only led to us having to wait inside (instead of outside) to be seated. We watched as over 6 tables, that arrived after we did, were sat. Some with fewer and some with similar numbers as our group. Their air conditioning was not working, nor were there any fans in the waiting area. It was over 101°. The only reason I stayed was because I was in a group. My food unfortunately lacked seasoning. However that was just my plate, I tasted my friends food and it was good. This was my second visit and I don't think I will return.

My husband and I have ate at this restaurant multiple times. On the weekend it’s always busy with good reason. The variety of mariscos/seafood here is great it comes at a price $$$. This day my husband got a large green shrimp ceviche, the plate was $30. That wasn’t the problem it was that when he got the plate it didn’t look like shrimp not only that it was 70% cucumber and 30% seafood. For a $30 plate he was expecting so much more. I had the mojará a la plancha, that was delicious and worth every $. The michelada was delicious too. We will return we just have to be careful on what we order. The service was great even on an extremely busy weekend. I still recommend this place for good mariscos/seafood.

It's a fun environment. Generally a busy place always packed. But the parking lot is perfect for the amount of people. They said it was a 30 minute wait but then they got us in a little earlier. The environment is super fun. Bands, music, etc. The food is super delicious. Prices are very fair for what it is. If you want something more upscale order it. If you're down for street tacos well they got that too. Drinks are a awesome its a fun family environment. My thoughts are scrambled I love it I recommend it to anyone. Update: Week days are nice and slow so no wait the waiter was extremely helpful and went the extra mile. He knew his menu and things even off menu that wasnt put in. He even noticed the sun in my eyes and went to close the blinds low enough to block it.

  • Jorge Valdez

REALLY SLOW SERVICE DURING LUNCH HOUR...even with condensed seating section, I think they had about 2 waitresses taking care of over 10-15 tables. Patiently waited for food: Campechana de camaron y caldo de mariscos. Wasn't a fan of the watery/cucumbery juice. It might be the style, but it's not mine. Good amount if shrimp. Was OK not great. Too limey...I like more tomato based. Caldo was tasty, but had almost NO FISH and tons of pulpo. Might as well have ordered caldo de pulpo con zanahorias y apio. This was my second time here, and I'm just not feeling it. Need to try popular molcajetes before I give up on them completely. ‍♂️

Wow! El Bucanero never disappoints! We had a great server Julio who walked us through the menu and narrowed down options for us for what we were looking for. We got the Ceviche Bandera (3 ceviche sampler) and it was a great portion and WOW, the flavors! It was incredible! We love ceviche!! We also got the shrimp la Reyna plate (might not be exactly the name) with a sampler of all sorts of shrimp. The garlic sauce on this dish was absolutely delicious! We decided we’ve been sleeping on El Bucanero and plan to make this a regular stop in our rotation. We will be back and asking for Julio as our server because not only was the food top notch, the service was too!

We just had beers, guacamole, and chips, but that was the freshest, tastiest guac I've ever had in a restaurant! They had lots of Mexican beers, including Pacifico, Bohemia, and Victoria, all delicious and refreshing. The decor colorful, with underwater ocean murals covering the walls. The service was friendly and eager-to-please yet not obtrusive. We'll definitely be back!

One of my favorite spots for ceviche. Overall fresh seafood and fruit. It's a great place at decent prices for the amount you get. Below was what we got for a total of $50ish. Really good quantity wise and just good. The tower you see has shrimp, octopus, fresh mango, strawberries(weirdly amazing with it), cucumber and cilantro. It's amazing. The other plate seen is ceviche Bandera that gives you 3 different ceviches. Then to add to it we got drinks of course. I've been here numerous times and have loved every dish so far. Definitely come out and try it.

The buccaneer is an incredible restaurant, for people who don't want seafood to be breaded. These are coastal style, natural and with great seasoning. They are very creative when presenting the dishes and they give them very peculiar names. Everything is delicious, they treated us very well. They have good customer service. You could not be in San Antonio without visiting this restaurant.

This place is always busy...that's a good sign. Ordered Camarones a la plancha..it was ok..the shrimp was overcooked. We also ordered bacon wrapped shrimp..also - ok. Both plates rice and beans were so-so. We tried the Tortilla Seafood soup. Now that was goood! The ceviche was also good. Overall we're going to try it again. But, we'll be eating @ the restaurant. Bet it's alot better than "to go".

What a great experience! I am from the Los Angeles area and had a craving for some Seafood, you know a Pulpo Cocktail or a Molcajete with Shimp! Well I found what I was seeking! The staff and management were experts at customer service and the food was fantastic! After speaking with a few of the staff I discovered that the owners open 30 years ago and were from LA. The vibe is So Cal seafood right here in San Antonio with 3 locations! I highly recommend El Bucanero!

They used to be great. Prices went up, quality and service went down it seems. Idk what was wrong with oysters today but they looked sick. We couldn’t even eat them. We did not complain, just didn’t eat them. Our group was large and we never once got refills on our drinks. No dessert for bdays? I could have sworn this was done before

Tends to be good seafood, but my experience this time wasnt as good. Rice was flavoreless and my Aji Shrimps werent as tasty. The dishes for the rest of my party were very good. Tacos gobernadores were great, delicious molcajetes and the cocktail was fine too. However, I was craving a white rice with garlic flavor and this one was a disappointment, that's the only reason why I gave 4 stars. Service was excellent, kudos to our server.

  • Edgar Garcia

The food was delicious, the service was great and the environment was very festive. If you like or would like to try some good Mexican seafood (mariscos), this is the place to go. For those of you who like to enjoy a beer or two, order a pachanga. Its beer dressed with a tangy sauce and shrimp. It may sound weird, but it's awesome, but be warned, bring some friends along because they will not let you drink it alone. Enjoy...

Stars are for food and service. Food is fresh, every dish has its own unique flavor. Drinks are perfect not too sugary and not too strong. Wait time however for food to arrive is more then I prefer. Complementary chips and 3 different hot sauces to try. Staff mainly only speak Spanish. (Don't worry pictures are on menu so you can just point.) over all very worth trying if you love seafood. $14.99 ceviche. $8.99 margaritas.

I would literally fly across states to come eat and drink at this place! If you like Mexican seafood, this is the place for you! They have a huge menu and I’ve ordered multiple dishes and have never been disappointed!! Their margaritas are super strong… you need like one and you’re good. They also have other things other than seafood like fajitas and enchiladas but why come here if you don’t want seafood lol?

  • Ro Ro

Service is always outstanding. If you don't Ike seafood, they have a big selection of different dishes. They have a good variety of alcoholic beverages as well. We've been here several times. One concern was that a car was broken into on our last visit; throughout conversations, we found out this had been happening on several occasions. Hopefully, they will hire security to prevent this from happening again.

  • Jose

Be prepared to eat and leave! As soon as they see you finish, the waiter brings the ticket and puts clean plates for the next guests. That’s their of saying “it’s time to leave!” You have to ask for things more than once because they forget. So-so food, not so friendly staff. Mariachis and photographer come often asking if you want their services…

First time here at El Bucanero for the wife and I. The food was just ok, nothing authentic here. They have a huge menu, which was my first red flag. In most cases restaurants that have such large menus means they can't make anything great, no exception here. The burrito I had tasted like everything came from a can, definitely not homemade that's for certain. First time and it will be my last time.

Best of the best Mexican/seafood in San Antonio. Always seating. Fast and friendly staff. Food has always been consistent. Never had a bad meal. This is a great place for seafood lovers! I order the Campechana dish (Seafood cocktail). It's available in the traditional red sauce (tomatoe base) or verde (alvacado base). Great atmosphere, delicious food, good prices and great variety. Make sure to get to any of the locations early because it's a popular restaurant and the wait can be long after 2pm, especially on the weekends.

Great place for seafood in SA. I'm not from the area and I was happy I found this place. So many things to choose from, something for everyone. Prices are not bad at all given the BIG portions that they serve. Server was very welcoming and very attentive. The place was very busy, but really enjoyed the ambience, mariachi and all.

We Come here like 3-4 times a month. Love the freshness of the food and I recommend the Bucanero Micheladas. They are dressed with cucumbers and fresh shrimp. This location is bigger than the other one plus it has an actual parking lot vs a dirt lot. Either one has great service and the food is just as good!

Hands down STILLl the best cerviche in town. This location never fails to deliver excellent food and service. Leyaneth was our server today and she was great. She was quick and very attentive. Always satisfied here.

The food is good, staff is friendly, the reason they didn't get a 5 star was do to the air conditioning. Couldn't enjoy my food since it was so hot in there.

First time here. The food was good, the service was good. Had Filete de pescado al mojo de ajo, but it was too garlicky. Maybe we will try something else next time. Overall, it was a good experience. Cucumber margarita was good.

If you haven’t yet had the chance to stop here and enjoy and evening with friends over food and drinks you really need to set aside time to do so. Traditional Mexican seafood like you find along the Mexican coast is how it was explained to

The service was excellent but the food was not all that. I ordered a shrimp cocktail which was the worst I've ever had! Then, I had the shrimp Bucanero for the entree and it was mediocre and I found a hair in my food! …

My family and I have been going to this restaurant for several years now. Although the quality of service isn't consistent, the quality of food itself is. I definitely recommend this place.

LOVE THIS PLACE!!!! Great seafood mocajete's crazy Ceviche concoctions! Good cocktails, although I wish they had draft beer. But the staff is great and you can't go wrong with any dish!

This is, by far, my favorite place to eat, lunch or dinner. All the seafood is fresh and delicious. The micheladas are tasty too. You can't go wrong at El Bucanero.
