Visiting the Clifton Suspension Bridge was an awe-inspiring experience that seamlessly merged history, engineering marvel, and breathtaking scenery. Designed by the ingenious Isambard Kingdom Brunel and finally completed in 1864 after years of construction, this bridge stands as an iconic symbol of Bristol's heritage. Walking across the bridge offered a unique perspective, perched high above the Avon Gorge, offering panoramic views of the river and the surrounding landscape. The sheer height, at approximately 76 meters above the River Avon, induces a sense of both excitement and reverence. Learning about its rich history, from Brunel's visionary design to the challenges faced during construction, added depth to the experience. The bridge not only serves as a vital transportation link but also stands as a testament to human innovation and perseverance. The Clifton Suspension Bridge isn't just a crossing; it's a journey through time and a testament to engineering brilliance. Whether you're a history enthusiast, an engineering buff, or simply seeking stunning views, a visit to the Clifton Suspension Bridge promises an unforgettable experience that encapsulates both beauty and grandeur.

Historical suspension bridge completed in 1864. Bridge was designed by the legendry engineer brunel and lies on top of the Avon gorge. It is motorable and a toll payable to cross. Bride is not supported by pillars in the middle and fixed to the cliffs of gorge either side. In the gorge below runs river Avon and parallel to the river there is a road and a railway running either side of the river. There is a an observatory located on one side of the cliff where you can walk along a tunnel and come to the edge of the cliff wall which has a fantastic view of the bridge. If coming to see the bridge via public transport from bristol bus station area, best option is to take bus No 8. This bus goes 0.3 miles close to the bridge and to the top of the cliff. Bristol city centre and harbour area is located at a lower elevation and the bridge is located on the cliff. Bus 8 will take you all the way to cliffton village located on the cliff. If other busses like bus 9 is taken, need to get down 0.7 miles before and climb the cliff along the roads running up.

Amazing views! A must visit if ever in Bristol, you can spend hours taking in the beautiful scenery. Many details around you. With the observatory close by, and a tunnel leading to suspended balcony in the middle of the cliff. The bridge itself is more than a 100 years old. With daily walking tours. You can put your camera down, many details you can find around you while crossing and beautiful scenery. It takes around 5 minutes going from one side to the other. Unfortunately the Avon gorge below was nearly dry when we visited August 2022 because of the heatwave, but still the views were beautiful. The Clifton area close by with the Mall gardens and many authentic restaurants. A nice place to send part of your day and end with having a meal in on of those restaurants. Note: the bridge has a £1 pound toll if crossing in a car.

It was a wonderful experience to explore the suspension bridge, you can drive through the bridge and park along side of road where parking is allowed-minimal parking place(pay and park via pay machine or MI permit App). Oneway footpath is there on both side of bridge to experience the walking experince and enjoying the stunning view from the top. You need to pay £1 via contactless payment or Bridge card to pass the toll gate to enter into the bridge. QR codes placed at the begining of the bridge for audio tour about the bridge, and guided bridge tour packages are available at specific time slot but you have to pay for it. It will be a wonderful experience the breathtaking view from the top of the bridge.

During our recent visit to Bristol, we were thrilled to revisit one of our favorite landmarks, the Clifton Bridge. As former residents of the city, the bridge brought back many fond memories. We love spending weekends and evenings at this peaceful and beautiful spot, which never fails to please. Our kids were especially delighted to slide down the slippery rocks. We highly recommend visiting the top of the hill for an even better view of the area. If you plan on crossing the bridge by car, please note that there is a £1 toll fee on each side. The payment can be made conveniently via contactless means. Overall, the Clifton Bridge remains a must-visit spot in Bristol, and we hope to return again soon.

  • Berglas71

Great historical bridge to visit. Not much parking near the bridge, so there might be a bit of a walk to get to it. If you have a blue disability badge, drive over from the Bristol side, and you can park in the lay-by on the right hand side (you might have to drive up the road a short distance to turn around). There are great photo opportunities on the bridge. If you suffer from vertigo, stay away from the edges as the drop is quite high. There are unicorn statues with messages of hope on them and the number for the samaratins on the bridge. There are walkways on either side of the road crossing the bridge. There is a barrier with a toll to cross on either side. Walking is free.

The place to visit in Bristol... My friends and I walked up from the centre of Bristol past many interesting and historic buildings. But it is mostly up hill! On the Bristol side above the bridge there's a little park that is an ideal viewing point for the bridge. Crossing the beautiful Brunel bridge, fantastic views of the river and city open up. Not the place to visit if you get vertigo... There is a very interesting and informative visitors centre on the far side from Bristol. For pedestrians it's free to cross, cars £1 (2023). Definitely recommend walking up to the bridge and crossing on foot. But not if you have problems with heights.

  • Sarah Leese

Absolutely amazing place. Ventured across the bridge in the car first to check out the views that way. You have to go slow as other people are doing the same. You an walk the bridge on foot however we chose not to this time. After taking in the views from the bridge we drove and parked up by the observatory and walked up to the park to take in more breathtaking views. The bridge itself is stunning both driving over and under. There is a toll but it's £1 which is nothing compared to other places. Parking up near the park and observatory can be busy so expect a good 15 minute hilly walk if you're taking children, buggies or wheelchairs.

The iconic landmark of Bristol. Still standing strong after 150+ years. Designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, one of the most famous Engineers of the Victorian era. Make sure to go to the Clifton Observatory to get great views of the bridge. Better yet, try to visit around the Bristol International Balloon Fiesta, which usually happens in August, to get views of colorful hot air balloons flying above the bridge. You can also go for Boating on river Avon under the bridge or if you feel adventurous, visit the Giant's Cave to get even better views. Highly recommended and must visit if you are in Bristol.

  • Irina Andreeva

Bristol's finest landmark and a marvel of engineering genius that Brunel's 'darling' was finally opened in a grand ceremony on 8 December 1864. From Observatory Hill the panoramic view over the city of Bristol and North Somerset is magnificent. At the low tide River Avon looks like a miserable stream, trickling between mud banks. There's a 12 metre rise and fall of tide here. Interesting fact: nearby Avonmouth has the second highest to lowest tide difference in the world after that in the Bay of Fundy off Nova Scotia, Canada. Breathtaking view! Awesome!!

  • John Wood

Absolutely stunning bridge. Can't believe how sturdy and it is still a very much living bridge when built in the Victorian era. As everyone knows Brunel almost singlehandedly built modern Britain and we still use most of his ingenious works. Not only they are strong and stable, but also most of them are quite iconic and amazing architects as well. This bridge is simply a piece of art work and couldn't take my eyes off when I first saw it from a distance. Such a great looking bridge.

  • Duong

An old suspension bridge still in use in the modern world. If you want to take nice pictures with the whole bridge in background, go up to the Downs hill where the Observatory is. Cross the bridge only when you want to see the bridge up close and feel the shaky structure whenever cars passing by, which is worth experience, too. Overall, it's a must-go place when visiting Bristol. It's 40-min walk from the city center, and you can also visit other tourist attractions along the way.

  • Katie Thayer

It's not very often I get the chance to walk around the bridge but it's really enjoyable every time I do. The engineering is impressive the views are amazing. You really get to experience how big this bridge is when walking across. The walkways are not very wide so if in a group could make it difficult to pass by if stopped on the bridge. There is a visitor center a short walk from the bridge. I really enjoyed visiting the bridge and hope to visit again soon.

  • priyanka pandey

Beautiful views of the gorge from the bridge. You don't really need a ticket, the view from the park itself is good enough. You can cross the bridge by a vehicle but you will have to pay £1 every time you drive across the bridge. Only issue is parking, especially during the weekend, the parking spaces next to the Clifton observatory by the bridge can be quite full. But there is free parking available around the park where the Clifton observatory is situated.

  • pam kwai

Even I don’t know much about bridge construction, I also can tell from the height and width of the bridge that this was a highly complex project in the 19th century. A lot of difficulties were encountered from design to completion which I learned from the visitor centre. Just walk 5 minutes across the bridge to enjoy the beautiful view of the river. A must see place if visiting Bristol as the view is just magnificent.

  • Yijie Xu

Quite an impressive bridge, with plenty of viewing platforms for tourists, as well as significant amounts of greenery. Parking is in short supply, but you can find stops leading up to the bridge for 15-30 minutes to be quite sufficient. Note that you can get two different views for both sides of the bridge. Moreover, make sure to climb up the hill for better views, as well as cafe access. Overall, an excellent visit

  • Kiwis Fly the Coop NZ

We did the Underground Vault tour. I hate heights so was conerned about the ladder but I had no issues desending or ascending the 13 steps. It was like walking into another world that had been kept hidden for a century. Magical stalactites hung from the ceiling like fine cobwebs. We also leart all about the bridge and how it came to be. Our two guides were amazing. Well done team, I'd fully recommend this tour.

  • SlyOldFox

Its always nice to see something out of the ordinary, and this bridge is one of those things. The sense of scale between the bridge and the width/depth of the Avon chasm is fantastic to behold. There is free parking nearby for 30 mins, just enough time to walk back to the bridge, across and back via the Observatory path. I took a detour from my journey with my kids to see this spectacal- well worth it!

  • Shibin Thomas

Is a must-visit destination in Bristol. Its combination of architectural magnificence, historical significance, and natural beauty make it an attraction that shouldn't be missed. Whether you're a nature lover, or simply seeking a picturesque experience, this bridge has something special to offer. Prepare to be amazed by the grandeur of Clifton Suspension Bridge and the captivating vistas it provides.

  • Sergio Portillo

Really cool bridge between a part and another part of Bristol. To be honest it is not super big but you can get to see most of Bristol and get some good pictures around the area. It also connects Bristol with a big park where you can find a miniature railway which you can ride and there is a golf club nearby as well. Honestly it was a great experience that I would recommend everyone to live.

  • DonDorcha

It's a 1 pound toll to drive 1 way over the bridge and another pound to drive back over it. You get the best view of the bridge from Clifton Observatory and the hill overlooking it. Designed by Brunel at the age of 24, it's a staggering creation far above the River Avon. In my opinion it's one of the best views in the UK and I'd recommend everyone to go and see it.

  • Andrea Jeffery

The bridge opened in 1864 and remarkably still had many of the same steel structures. It also offers beautiful views of the city. On the Leigh Woods side, there's a small, free interpretive center that provides history on the bridge and technical background about how it was built. To see the bridge from afar, take the short hike up to the Clifton Observatory.

  • David Troughton

An iconic symbol of Bristol and must see free to visit tourist attraction (but cars pay a toll) with fantastic views over Avon Gorge. Designed by legendary engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel it took 33 years to build as various issues halted construction. It also provides a route to walk from Clifton across to the 850 acre Ashton Court, also worth a visit.

  • Irene Njuguna

Fascinating, looks like a diamond necklace, good for sight seeing, beautiful view of Bristol City at night. Over the hill you get to see the padlocks where lovers make a pact for their love. A sad thing about the bridge is many people have committed suicide on this bridge because of divorce, loss of their home because of mortgages. Highly recommended.

  • Toni To

Stunning views with lovely weather and I would love to visit again. “Free” crossing the bridge with your feet and £1 pre car crossing over. Parking ️ !! (look at the photos) If you are driving to visit this local, please follow my details. There are few parking spaces nearby and 5 mins walk to the bridge. £1.50 1hr / £3 2hrs / £4.5 3hrs.

  • Marko Jovic

You can enjoy nice view over the Clifton Suspension Bridge and one coffee shop on top of the hill. It is possible to visit a cave from where you should enjoy even better view (I have not done it, so I leave that part to others to evaluate). It was very cold at the time when I was there and it might have impacted the overall impression.

  • Rae

Free to cross as a pedestrian, £1 for cars. Amazing and expansive view, and fun to look down at all the tiny cars and people. Very narrow pathways so it would be a struggle for a wheelchair or a big buggy, but perhaps not impossible. You can definitely access the first part of the bridge pretty easily, which has the best views anyway!

  • Michael Scott Connolly

Definitely one of the greatest feats of 19th century engineering and a must see if visiting this part of England. The last place I visited that had the same magnetic charm was Niagara Falls in Canada. People everywhere were trying to find the best view. Everyone seemed to be mesmerised by this amazing achievement. Highly recommend

  • Neeraj Acharya

Great view from the top of the bridge. You can walk on the bridge free and you can drive on the bridge by just paying £1 (contactless payment). There are limited parking spots available after crossing the bridge having 15 to 20 mins max waiting time, so you can have a view from the top. Have a look at the pics and see the beauty.

  • Jeewan bhatt

Easy to cross with contactless payment of £1 , found MIPermit parking at roadside , walked on the bridge to the observatory. The views were amazing even during winter time. At Observatory there is a cafe, enjoyed some sweet snacks. One side of bridge has a small coffee shop. Overall good place for nice walk with family

  • QUSAI DALAL

Clifton Suspension Bridge is one of the oldest suspension Bridge of it's time. Built around 1860 AD. It's an engineering Marvel and good picturesque view from the Bridge. Bristol City looks quite beautiful from the Bridge. Must visit for Nature enthusiast. One can go Trekking as well on the hill near the bridge.

  • Ségolène Roche

Fantastic structure and feat of engineering atop a gorge. Strongly recommend walking over to the visitor centre on the other side of the bridge from the observatory if you want to learn more about the reasoning behind the project, how it came to life and why it was such an important sight in the 19th century.

  • Stratman

World renowned Clifton suspension built by Isambard Kingdom Brunel started working on it when he was only 24 in the 18th century. Traverse by foot both ways crossed by vehicles for £1 toll. Incredible views from the top & crossing the bridge. Certainly worth a visit for the panoramic views of Bristol city

  • Rajesh Mondal (Devy Jones)

Bristol’s famous Clifton Suspension Bridge was initially designed in the early 19th century for light horse-drawn traffic, but now more than 11,000 vehicles usually cross it every day. The bridge’s gorgeous setting on the cliffs of the Avon Gorge, above the River Avon, is a sight to behold too.

  • Taylor Thompson

Incredible feat of engineering, truly ahead of its era. Really cool to have seen this bridge, walking across and experiencing it firsthand. Definitely recommend stopping by the visitor center at the bridge's end to get more insights on the bridge's engineering and other fascinating tales.

  • panagiotis gkounidis

This place is not for a paint hearted. Great view and kinda makes you wonder how they can build something like this. It was an incredible experience which you can walked through both sides and was pretty high. It doesn’t get busy and it was a nice place to walk.

  • Stephanie Davy

A pretty magnificent sight! I sadly didn’t get to go to the free centre and half of the footpath was closed on the bridge so I didn’t get to see the cliffs in quite the way I wanted but it was a breathtaking structure with marvellous views. Well worth the trip.

  • Steve Hill

what's not to like about the bridge having live in bristol for nearly 60 years .I was actually working on the house roof in the photo with the bridge in the background but I walked my new dog at every lunchtime over the bridge for a month .wonderful …

This was the perfect backdrop for the hot air balloon festival and we had a memorable experience watching the show. The bridge itself was of course historically impressive although we were a bit cramped when walking across it due to the narrow walkways.
