I was in Kingston yeaterday visiting my brother in hospital (KGH) and I had to get back to Montreal, so I only had a little time, and I knew of this store. Went in, and asked if he might carry some of the new vinyl reissues - He said yes, I have a few. I said, I bet you've heard of Procol Harum, and his eyes lit up - he said I might have something that would interest you. Sure enough - a copy of the Whiter Shade of Pale reissue EP for Record Store Dar 2017. A real rarity now. "Sold" I said. Doing the Dance of Joy! I read this article, and I see his name's Brian Lipsin (I knew he's 'Brian') - years ago, I worked for International Music Store on Ste-Catherine Street in Montreal, and I knew an Aaron Lipsin who was a record distributor at the time (late 60s-early 70s). Sure enough, the article mentions that. I also correspond with Brian's brother, who's also mentioned. Small world, and so this isn't the forst record I've bought from a Lipsin!
Brian is a wizard, a kind of local legend in Kingston. I am from Alberta and I always make it a point to visit if I’m in town, and that has been true for the last ten or so years. If you walk in to his shop, you are there on the shop’s terms, and I say that in the best, most welcoming way. Leave your bag at the front, and your type-A brain. It’s a mess, but it is organized. Patience is helpful, but that’s also just true for life at large. For me it’s a joy and a treasure hunt and it always has been. Brian is positive and enthusiastic company, a wizard (a true star). The man is full of passion & knowledge about music (also, conveniently, in relation to his store). He might even throw in a good story. Long live the Record Option! Happy digging.
This place is moderately priced. They have a massive library of vinyl records raging from blues to hip hop if you are looking for anything just ask them, They usually have it. They stock vinyl, posters and CDs with new stuff always coming in. Just a little tip, if you go directly left when facing the register or keep to the right as you come in you will find a horizontal shelf containing classing and new vinyl records, they are usually used from one place or another but they also sell reproductions and new stuff.
I was made aware of the owner's uncanny ability to "find order in his chaos". One step in this wall to wall, floor to ceiling maelstrom of vinyl and dust jackets... you can find some of the greatest jewels for your collection. Don't be afraid to ask for help. The owner is very knowledgeable in his stock of new and used records, CDs, posters and much more...without the use of a digital database. Prices are reasonable and if you don't mind digging for something you want... this is a great place to come to.
Finally open once again! If you haven't made an effort to return after the flood and renovations- go now! Still has its cluttered charm, without it being chaotic and overwhelming. If you are new to Kingston- or just visiting..and you like music.. it is a necessary stop on your trip. Time had its own meaning in the store.. be prepared to lose track of time. Tight space, so I'd suggest leaving any large backpacks or similar items at home. Well worth the time to go and get some vinyl or CDs.
Hey Brian. Gord here from Ottawa... Brian's is too much fun for a music junkie collector like me. Prepare to spend some hang time. Half the fun is searching to find what you didn't know exists...something like that. Looking forward to my next trip, the last was fruitful including some vintage repro posters. Currently looking for Roy Buchanan's 'You're Not Alone' which I didn't know until today exists, and for me to find. Brian will likely have it or order it for me. See you soon Brian!
I'd give it 3.5 stars if I could. It's a classic, old-school record store with a bit of everything and Brian is super nice. But if you're an experienced digger the prices are too high for the mostly junk records that are in the enormous racks and piles. The gems seem to have been plucked. If you're just looking for a record or two the place is great as a new pressing is likely waiting for you. If you're looking for deep cuts or great deals you're probably not going to find either.
Brian's Record Option is the best record/music store I've been to, and the man himself makes it so special. He's super friendly, will gladly help you find anything you're looking for and tell you some great stories along the way. It's one of those stores you just have to stop, look around, take it all in, and appreciate the passion he has for music and sharing it with others. Always a great time stopping by here.
This place is just fantastic if you like your music on vinyl. Find rare old ones or new ones that are special editions. Also has cassettes (remember those?) and t shirts and some super cool posters. Had a great time there, picked up some rare good stuff. But spending time with Brian is just a pleasure – he is legend. He also ships worldwide if you'd like. The place is a must visit stop for music lovers.
Met Brian and visited his store. While I did not buy anything on my visit, I must say, this is a vinyl (pr any music for that matter) lovers dream. Prices were extremely reasonable and a huge selection of new and used. I was also very pleased to see Brian's customer service skills. Customer after customer came in while I was there and he was extremely pleasant and helpful to all.
Brian is a great guy, wonderful service and excellent knowledge. Always has a story to tell. I drive from Belleville to check out his amazing vinyl collection. I'm happy with everything I've purchased there. It looks better than ever, and it's always amazing to see so many customers coming in to dig their his vast collection. Long love vinyl!
Brian's the man. Thanks again for helping me find some Jeff Buckley. If you get any bootlegs in send me a message! I stopped in here yesterday. I was on a work trip and wanted to check out the record stores in Kingston. Brian is so incredibly knowledgeable about all the stuff I was looking for. We need to clone this guy!!!! Thanks again!
Awesome place for used and new vinyls. Compared to other places the prices are a bit higher but the ambiance is worth the extra money. Brian is a super nice guy and you shouldn't shy away from asking him questions because he knows his stuff very well. If you're passing by don't hesitate to stop at this amazing record store.
Very disappointing to say the least..... tried to negotiate the price with the owner, which angered him so I put the record down and said I'm sorry. However he proceeded to yell "GO BACK TO YOUR COUNTY WE DON'T DO THAT HERE" and threatened to SHOOT me with his gun when I'm already on my way out. UPSETTING and DISGUSTING
While your first impression may be that the store is cluttered, this will easily be overlooked by Brian's extensive selection of music, his knowledge of it, and his customer service. This is a must stop shop for music fans of all kinds, far and wide. A true gem. Plan to be there for the day, or for multiple visits.
A Kingston institution. Brian’s Record shop is a crate diggers paradise, and Brian himself is as old school as it gets when it comes to record shop owners. Leave yourself plenty of time to chat while you dig, and if you can’t find what you’re looking for just ask, Brian somehow knows what he has and where it is.
I wonder how much music Brian has heard? He has so much around. Prices are fair and his store has a one-of-a-kind atmosphere. Definitely feels crowded at times, especially when 6 or 7 people are in it, but that's part of the charm. Brian is an honest and sympathetic man. He's a witty guy, too. Love his laugh.
Great place. Went in with zero knowledge of records, planning on buying my father a few for Christmas. Unknown artists to me, I received a great deal of help selecting albums based on some recommendations. Extremely friendly service, fair prices, and I'm sure my father will be in to add to his collection.
Amazing treasure trove of a record store. The selection is simply incredible. Brian knows his stuff and we were impressed by his knowledge of his gigantesque inventory. Had some great conversations with him as well. Will definitely have to come back to Kingston to visit his shop again!
A big fat no. Won’t be back. I like digging as much as the next record collector, but this place feels like a hoarder’s home. I would imagine a lot of the records would be warped based on the way they’re stacked. Prices also seem quite high for the condition with no room to negotiate.
Super helpful and friendly, with a wealth of knowledge and passion. Brian knows the entire massive collection in his store amongst the seemingly chaotic layout. Once you figure it out you'll be set to go on a lengthy hunt of the vast stock of new and used vinyl and cassette.
Such a gem of a place. You can easily spend an afternoon here browsing through Brian's incredible collection. We were after Otis Redding, Leon Bridges, Bahamas and the Teskey Brothers and Brian had all except the Teskey Brothers on hand - he is well stocked!
A Great local business, owned and operated by Brian himself. Fantastic selection of vintage posters, CDs, Records and memorabilia. Brian is extremely helpful and knowledgeable and its truly a blessing having him open for business right here in kingston.
The shop is very cozy(&full) owner was so friendly and he happily waited to close while helping me look around. The sheer number of items/selection in every genre was incredible. Its a wonderful little record store, Every music lover should stop in.
Really cool place. It does not feel like your typical record store, it feels like a treasure hunt...think American Pickers vibe. Brian is super knowledgable about what he has and if you ask him, he probably knows where it is. A fun experience!
Most reviews say he knows where everything is...NO! Most reviews say he is a nice guy...he was until I asked if there was any room on his pricing (which was high)...then told me he now wanted MORE money because I asked. He said he had stuff
A treasure trove of music that begs to be dug through on each visit whether you are looking for something new, an old classic, or something obscure theres a high chance it's somewhere in here. And amazingly Brian tends to know just where.
I was going to order a record for Christmas from Amazon but the shipping date wasn't until mid January. I contacted Brian and he said he could have it in two days. And did! Great guy and glad I could support a great local business.
Great place to dig for some classical music, 70s rock and vintage magazines. However there are not so many metal albums, relative to the huge number of records. Things in the metal category are mainly glam metal and 80s hard rock.
Awesome place, great atmosphere. Records stacked to the ceiling and classic posters you won't find anywhere else. The owner is a great guy. He knows exactly where everything is and will find what you are looking for no problem
Even if I didn't buy a vinyl, I was quite impressed by the selections. There is too much to see. I even asked for the 1984 Breakin' soundtrack and in this mess, the owner knew exactly where the vinyl was. I was stunned!!!
If you are looking for something, anything on vinyl, Brian either has it or can get it for you. There is just no place like Brian's and nobody like Brian. Can't wait to have an opportunity to stop in and shop/chat again.
Brian's Record Option is a one of a kind record shop. His store has an phenomenal selection and Brian is a wealth on information. I always find some gems each time I go. Worth the visit for any music fan.
Lots of great stuff. It's a little chaotic, but the hunt is half the fun and if you are looking for something in particular ask Brian he will know if he has it and exactly where it is. Love this place.
Best record store I've seen. Dude has new stuff, he has old stuff, as super hard to find records and can get most of what he doesn't have in. Really friendly guy too, very cool vibe in the store.
This has been my go-to place for vinyl for over 30 years! The selection is absolutely unbeatable. Prices can be a bit high for used items with missing inner liners and beat up sleeves, though.
BEST RECORD SHOP IN TOWN ! Brain knows his stuff ! The shop is jam packed full of gems and He knows exactly where each one is. It's a bit messy but it just ads to authenticity of the shop.
I'm not huge into records but got some as a gift for someone else. Owner was a lot of help and gave some good suggestions from a genre and even ended up buying a nice poster for myself.
First time coming here also will be my last time place is very disorganized and the owner is not very friendly overpriced as well charging prices on new stuff that is damaged not cool
A paradise on earth.. If you are a vinyl addicted you are in the right place. Just take it easy and time.. So many records! Plus Brian is an amazing person that help you every time.
Brian's been there a long time very knowledgeable guy. I used to buy tons of stuff there when I was in high school can you recommend anyone looking for anything obscure to try there
First of all Brian is a gem of a human, love chatting when going in. He helped me with all the questions with my new set up. The selection is amazing - you can spend hours in here.
From out of town, just visited this weekend. Easily one of the best record stores I’ve ever been to. That includes Criminal, Grimeys, Newberry. Not for everyone, but it is unreal.
If I had a million dollars I would never leave this place. Take your time and have a good time looking through everything. Lots of books, CDs and records. Very friendly service.
Great shop has lots of records, my only complaint would be it is a little over crowded inside and hard to move around. With that being said it is definitely still worth a visit
This is a must see place. The selection of music is amazing, and prices are reasonable. The store is a bit of a mess to say the least but that's part of its unique charm.
sick store which is chaotic good in a physical form, so many records if you dig around, and brian is super nice and will talk to you abt music. his passion is so amazing
Amazing collection ! Fairly priced. Above all Brian is a kind and engaging Man. Knowledgeable beyond words. Great Stories. This is a record collectors dream location!
Found exactly what I was looking for. Great customer service and knows his stuff. He also provided information on where to get antique music equipment serviced.
Records stacked to the ceiling. It's like a maze of music in there, but ask the owner and he can help you find exactly what you're looking for. Awesome shop!
I've been going to Brian's for the last five years. Great selection of inventory. Brian is super kind, will recommend picks, and very knowledgeable.
Brian's Record Option has been a Kingston icon for 37 years. All you have to do is ask Brian, for what you want, and he does the searching for you.
Was my go to record store for 6 years while I lived in Kingston. Loved the place. Brian got me hooked into the blues. I been collecting ever since.
Brilliant little record store, massive collection of new and used, and Brian is very friendly and will help you find whatever record you need.
You will find many of your long sought after albums, Cds, and posters..and many items you didnt know existed. My FAVORITE place in Kingston
My favourite retail store in Kingston. Brian will help you find anything imaginable and order for you whatever he doesn't have in stock.
Place is absolutely bonkers. But Brian is a super nice guy and has a unbelievable catalogue & knowledge. A must go
Brian has the music poster, record, tape or cd you are looking for, if not... he will order it for you.
Fun to visit. But the prices caught me off guard (higher than expected given the chaotic organization)
Best Record shop in the world ! Brian is definitely fully stocked and knowledgeable! …
Wholly what a great record store. Brian knows where everything is. Fantastic prices too.
What a gem. If you're a vinyl fan or a music fan in general, you must visit this place!
Huge selection. The owner is fantastic - incredibly knowledgeable. Great little place.
It's total chaos. Brian is a lovely fellow and he knows where almost everything is.
Was very crowded and unorganized, the music and cds were stacked every which way.
Amazing atmosphere, always has everything I'm looking for and Brian is INCREDIBLE
Amazing store where I've been buying all my vinyl and cds for over 30 years now.
The owner is so kind and helpful!! Its also a great place for some nice posters
So many records so that's great but navigating around in there is a bit tough.
Good boy very spicy records high quality very mess mess much cauios good good
A bit of everything, including Rap and he actually respects the craft. Peace
If you're looking for old music on cassette or record a great place to go.
95% of my albums come from Brian's. I've been going there for 30+ years
Just ask and Brian will find!!! Great selection and then there’s Brian.
Fantastic record store. If he doesn't have it, he'll order it for ya.
Good record store if you like to navigate in an absolute mess …
I always love going in to see Brian and find some amazing treasures.
Wow some great titles... I could easily spend a month exploring.
Great treasure hunt for records. Friendly service as always:)
They had what I was looking for and he is very relatable
Brian is so helpful and the selection of LP's amazing
Unbelievable!! It's a must visit when in Kingston
Incredible, fun place! Brian is a great guy!
A part of the town, always great to stop in
Amazing! You will want to keep going back.
Overpriced for mediocre quality records
Lots of selection. Too cluttered though
Fun staple of Kingston's music scene!
Great selection and Brian is great .
This place is awesome as is Brian.
Always helpful and knowledgeable.
Super selection and good prices.
Fav place to look for records.
My favourite place on earth
