I was between ratings in this stay. I have a relative that put us up in this guesthouse that lives in the area. HIGHLY recommend the area as all the restaurants and shops are very walkable and such a beautiful area in a lively neighborhood. Contactless check in was a plus, we stayed in the Beverly cleary room which faces the front of the guesthouse.. keeping in mind spring to fall there is an ac unit in the window so you hear quite a bit. (We turned on the fan feature and it drowned everything out) It was a large room with its own bathroom. The public guest areas were very nice and always clean with breakfast accommodations and a fridge. (Though they only had one tiny drawer for guests) My only reason for not doing 5 stars was because of a staff member who came off very cold and unwelcoming. I believe she was actually one of the owners.. I heard someone in the hall so opened the door and as I stood in the doorway I say hello! And her response was “mask!” (These are required in their public areas at this time) I then say ok… we are staying here almost a week and we were just wondering if we could get more towels? She responds with “they are right next to you, As it states in the welcome letter. Mind you this was a very brisk tone like we were being a nuisance. Well I read and reread that letter and it says to ask if someone is available … so we were just following direction. I have worked in all industries and would not talk a to patron this way. Many different ways to have handled this. Other than that there was a gentleman that was there on arrival, very nice, as well as the cleaning staff.

We chose to stay in this little guesthouse, cause we didn't really want to go to one of the equally expensive large chain hotels. We did arrive a bit late (8PM), so we didn't get to meet the patrons, but a welcome email and then a letter on the bed explained everything important to us. The Beverly Clearly room we stayed in is spacious, has a very nice king bed and a small yet comfy ensuite bathroom. Unfortunately it also faces the SE Division Street which is definitely noisier than we expected. Over night it's relatively quiet, but sleeping in is not really a thing when you're not used to traffic noise. The house itself is old and quaint, but with that also comes some inevitable noise when walking through the hallways and such. Which made the second night of our stay pretty horrendous, as there must've been a really late check-in (like 2 in the morning) that pretty much ruined the night for us... If you book here, maybe just make sure to get a room facing the backyard and/or bring some earplugs :) The surrounding area is fantastic by the way: SE Division Street is busy with lots of little eateries and very friendly people. And if you want it a bit more quiet, you just walk a couple of blocks inwards to the residential areas.

The Beverly Clearly room is nice and spacious with a very soft bed and a nice ensuite bathroom. Unfortunately facing the road, so pretty noisy.

Bluebird Guesthouse and in particular, the Ken Kesey room, was so wonderful to stay in. There are large common spaces to lounge in and chat over a snack or tea. The cute little backyard has an occasional cat visitor too, which is a plus! The rooms are a bit old but feel very quaint and comfortable. The bed was really soft and nice to sleep in. Bathrobes, towels, body wash (that doubles as bubbles for a bubble bath) and shampoo were provided. Free wifi was fast and I really enjoyed all the complimentary continental breakfast foods and beverages (much much better than your average hotel). I especially liked the Asian pear tea. 10/10 for value and the comfortability of the stay. My partner and I would definitely come back in the future!

What a pleasant surprise! I was traveling to Portland for a conference but ended up with an odd night not booked for the conference hotel so I stayed at the Bluebird. Let me tell you - this place is immaculate. The hosts have thought of everything. Useful tables/desk in the right places. Towels, bathrobes, helpful signs all about. The breakfast was fantastic - lots of organic/all natural options and good coffee. I love the old house which is beautifully vintage without being uncomfortable in any way (plenty of electrical outlets, well regulated temperature, stylishly outfitted). I booked the room (Beverly Cleary ) on the strength of the reviews here but even so the place was even nicer than I anticipated. It's true you can hear other guests coming up/down the stairs but this did not bother me. Close to public transportation yet quiet and residential. I could go on and on. Only regret? Not booking there for my whole trip!

We had no air conditioning, no parking, no housekeeping service, no fresh towels, all in a room with a 7 foot ceiling that had about as much space as a prison cell. For the price we were charged ($175/night) we could have easily stayed at a decent hotel. My wife and I have been traveling for more than 20 years and this is by far the worst accommodations we have ever experienced. As you'll see below, the owner has used the opportunity of a negative review to do more blatant marketing for this substandard property. Sure, the fact that there is no A/C in this room is on their site—but not on the room description page. It's buried on another page. And there's nothing like trying to sleep in a hot room with no A/C, just a large and noisy fan to keep you awake all night. Regarding the prison cell comment, you don't need to have stayed in prison to know the size of a cell (although false advertising might get you convicted).

Overall score: 4 Customer Service: 5 Location: 5 Parking: 3 Cleanliness: 4 Reservations: 5 Comfort: 4 We stayed last night at this lodging location, while we were visiting the Portland area. We made our reservations a few weeks ago, and the process was seamless and very easy. Everything was contactless and we received an email from the staff on how to access the house. Our email instructions included our room and private bathroom details. The parking situation is very challenging because they don't have on site parking. There is nearby street parking within 1-2 blocks. This lodging is within walking distance to many nearby restaurants, shops, and bars. The rooms are warm and cozy, but not very accessible for handicapped people. Overall our lodging experience was very good and I'm sure we would return for another visit. @glampedlife

Vintage (1909!). Clean. Comfortable. Quiet. Nice bed. Affordable. Great location. Not AirB&B. Cool old wood everywhere. Original (I think) hardware. Nice, dark, tasty carpets. Quality continental breakfast spread. Plentiful street parking. The clean-up-after-yourself ethos in the kitchen is a combined paradigm of individual responsibility, ccommunal and collective living and socialism. My only very minor, petty gripes are that you can't control the temperature in the room (it's fixed but doesn't get too cold), shower that leaks onto the bath mat, it can take ages to get hot water in the bathroom sink in the winter, and there may be impromptu guitar playing and singing by (albeit decent) singer-songwriters at 9:30am when you're eating breakfast. I really dig the cozy, over a century oldness. I'm glad I chose it and would def. stay here again.

AMAZING!!!! I have never stayed at a guesthouse before, so we weren't sure what to expect. It is basically a very, very nice hostel arrangement with every amenity you could need (e.g. fridge full of great breakfast foods, brand new washer and dryer, complimentary computer/internet, etc.) Our room was very classy and comfortable. This whole house appears to have undergone a massive renovation, but has retained all of it's 1920?s character. Every detail is polished and new feeling. Unbelievable, especially for what we paid. Why anybody would stay in a hotel, or anywhere else in Portland for that matter, I couldn't say. This place would be perfect for romantic couples, business folk, families, and/or people looking for a very nice place for cheap (we were in the first and last categories). Never staying anywhere else in Portland again.

I stumbled on this place when I stopped in Portland on a road trip. It was late, but they had a room with a shared bathroom for only 63 with tax. I'm glad I found it. It's located on division in a quiet, adorable part of the city. The owners keep to themselves and I didn't run into other guests. The house itself is immaculate and it feels like you're staying at a friends house. The rates are unreal! Breakfast in the morning is coffee and bagels but there are other supplies like tea, cereal, pancake mix and fruit. They also provide hot cocoa mix and popcorn. The common rooms are beautiful and are full of books and a guitar. I will be recommending this place to everyone I know who makes the trip out here. Thanks for a great stay!!

Lovely experience: location, environment, and value are all more than I could have hoped. I've stayed here a couple of times now and am impressed with all the subtle, hospitable touches; every detail is quietly taken care of for you. And, even if you're an introvert like me, it's fun to meet the other people staying in the house while you're there. The ground level offers many communal areas and also easily accommodates working remotely, as I did for a couple of days while there. Most of the rooms also have a desk in them if you'd rather not work among the bustle or have a conference call. Overall, one of the best accommodations I've ever had, anywhere.

***This review was written about a stay during COVID*** Exceeded our expectations! The website photos did not do the room justice. We stayed in the first floor studio and it was a lot larger than expected. Bed was very comfortable, shower was very nice. Most important to us (we were traveling with a packed car) there was a parking lot attached to the property, we were able to move things very easily from our car to the room.. Breakfast was grab and go, perfect for our situation. Would gladly stay again next time we are in the PNW.

This was a comfortable and easy stay, that is right in the middle of great Portland breweries, food, and shops. The Beverley Cleary room is spacious and has a wonderful en-suite bathroom. The communal kitchen was stocked with snacks and delicious breakfast basics. I throughly enjoyed my stay, and would do it again. Small note- in booking they ask that no young kids stay due to noise, which now makes a lot of sense. It’s very quiet here but that’s because of respectful guests around me. You can easily hear noise in the hall.

Lovely house in a fun neighborhood. Never had a chance to meet the owners, but they left instructions on how to enter the house and find our room. The Beverly Cleary room was spacious with its own private bath and king sized bed. I loved the bathrobes! Breakfast was a serve yourself continental shmorgasborg of cereal, bagels, pastries, yogurt, fruit - a great start to the morning. We loved being able to walk to a string of restaurants nearby - definitely check out Sen Yai Noodles and Salt & Straw for delicious ice cream! We will definitely stay here again!

Unable to spend a night due to 0 parking. Called the night manager for help and he was condesending and very rude. No one onsite to help and the driveway to load and unload was blocked by a vehicle. We spent 40 minutes searching side streets for spots to be told by him we didn't try hard enough. Very upsetting and discouraging. We had to come to Portland for a specialty appointment for my disabled son and that didn't phase him one bit he continued to be atrocious. He luckily did promise a refund.

Wonderful little guest house nestled in a super sweet part of Portland. All the rooms are named and are lovingly tended to, with letters left for guests on their beds and super comfy beds and pillows. The shared kitchen and living spaces are super sweet and stocked with everything you need. Breakfast pastries are delicious and all food options are available for those with allergies or dietary needs. Absolutely love it, and WI definitely consider them in the future.

The Bluebird always feels like home away from home. This time we were in a room we had never been in before, Ursula le Guin, and the bed was terrible and saggy. I slept about 3 hours and my husband was also extremely uncomfortable all night. We won't get this room again unless the bed is replaced. Otherwise, the Bluebird is great and all other trips have been very comfortable.

Unprofessional clerk behavior and there is no staff on site for checking in. Avoid this place. Edit: called to ask for a booking “now” due to my disabled relative suffering from heat stroke on a hot day and needing safe shelter to cool down. Was told that’s fine. Then told the room isn’t ready for hours and there is no staff on site. Tried to cancel but they charge you anyway! This place discriminates against disabled people in heat stroke weather.

If you want to explore Portland, this is the place to stay! It has perfect access to buses, streetcars and trams that can get you all over the city. And if you're not in the mood to go too far, Division is a wonderful street, particularly for eating! This will definitely be my go to place to stay in Portland!

This place is absolutely perfect. Easy check in. Toasty warm in December. Great breakfast food selection in the huge kitchen, even GF muffins! Beautiful quiet room… super clean everywhere. The best neighborhood, easy to park yet all sorts of amenities within a 5 minute walk. This house is absolutely gorgeous with so many beautiful details. This place lacks nothing.

Excellent housing and better service! The owner was kind and understanding, even moved our luggage into our room after we were late from car troubles. The house itself is beautifully maintained, probably the best housing in our road trip across most of the western United States! I will always recommend a stay. They don't make hosts like this anymore.

  • Mack Benevides

My boyfriend and I just spent the weekend here and had a lovely stay. It was so convenient to be close to a lot of things we wanted to do and see in Portland! My ONLY complaint is that this is a house and there were some very loud guests staying in another room but I can't fault the Bluebird Guesthouse for that. We will definitely stay here again!

  • Lauren Karnes

We were so pleasantly surprised with the Bluebird Guesthouse. It was so quaint and charming, and in an amazing area of town. We were walking distance from so many great places: restaurants, bars, shops, etc. We did not have our own bathroom, but we didn't really mind that. We would definitely stay here again if we come back to Portland.

  • Elizabeth Johnson

Great stay here! Host was very good at communicating, no issues getting in. Really cool historic home with everything you need, kitchen full of snacks was a nice touch after a full day of traveling. Lots of cute restaurants and shops within 5 minute walk. Street parking no big deal. We felt very safe here, would stay here again!

  • Matthew Gatheringwater

I could have spent my whole weekend just exploring the interesting neighborhood around the Bluebird Guesthouse. There were lots of interesting places to eat within walking distance. The house was clean and the on-site manager was easy to find and helpful. I've booked another stay, I liked it so much.

  • Ron Bodenhamer

Stayed in the Gabriel Marquez room for one night. Exactly what fit our needs for the evening; close to dining and music. Room was clean. Easy access to enter house and room. Breakfast was very well maintained with plenty of options. Probably was of the easiest check in's. I'm staying again.

They canceled confirmed reservation at the last minute. I booked a room for my mother, who traveled 17 hours from Caracas, Venezuela. Without warning, they canceled the confirmed reservation minutes before we arrived at the Guesthouse. The very definition of arbitrary and inconvenient..

I stared here for years on weekends while going to grad school out of state from where I lived. Cute, clean, walkable to great Portland food and drink, and great continental self-serve breakfast. I haven’t been in a few years but would stay there again if we visit Portland.

This place is beautiful! You can have as much or as little interaction with the other guests as you like, the decor is elegant, understated and exceptionally comfortable, and booking is delightfully easy. I will be staying here anytime I need a place in Portland.

  • Brian Robins

Very nice, very quaint old house. Clean and quiet, well stocked with food, but you fix it yourself and wash your own dishes. The bathroom we had was shared, which was a minus, but that's probably why the room was such a good deal. But I would stay here again.
