What an awesome lunch we had today! We have actually been looking for something to fault and we cannot find a thing! We own a “paddock to plate “ restaurant in Sheffield and have come away to Hobart with our children for a few days break so we are quite selective with where we eat out! The 1 star reviews this restaurant has are absolute rubbish! For future reference people 1 star means, inedible, dirty, horrible service, maybe even a few rodents running around! None of this is apparent here, making the booking was easy, finding the restaurant also easy, we were then welcomed in by not one but a few friendly faces, we were seated, drinks order was taken and after our waiter explained the menu, the decor is funky and fun, atmosphere great. We ordered (a lot of food) and it was all exceptional! The balance of flavours was phenomenal! We had a mix of everything and loved it all although the standouts for us were the miso mushrooms, chicken skewers and the spicy beef ramen. Our review is being left because we are genuinely impressed, and we have been taught that if you don’t have anything nice to say then don’t say anything. We don’t leave 5 stars lightly. Well done to all of the team at Bar Wa Izakaya!

I have heard so much and been wanting to try this place for so long that it had a lot to live up to. Even though a few of my friends were already fans, the rest of us hadn't been here so it's reputation was going to get tested. The first thing that hit me was how great the place was decked out. The look and feel inside sets the mood very nicely. All the staff we came across and spoke to us were all friendly and relaxed and before we knew it we were sitting at our table. Since there were a few of us it was suggested that we try the chef's pick menu which was set at $65 per person. We went along with that and I'm so glad we did. As you know I like good food but I'm a bigger fan of value for money so I was interested to see how much food would come our way. Well.....the food kept coming and coming and coming and I don't think there was any dish that I didn't like. From Edamame Beans, Chicken Kaarage, Agedeshi Tofu, Eye Fillet Steak, Kingfish & Ocean Trout Sashimi and a couple in between I simply didn't remember (was too preoccupied enjoying the food and company). There were 7 of us and this was more than enough food so the value was excellent. When you throw into the mix amazing quality of the food, the service and the atmosphere of the place itself I can see why so many have raved on about it. Great work Bar Wa Izakaya. Looking forward to next time.

Date/time of visit:15 Sep 2023 @ 7.30pm Date/time of visit: 19 Sep 2023 @2:00pm Excellent. Our first visit was fir dinner and we enjoed it so much, we returned a few days later for lunch. We didn't have a rservation for dinner but they offered us seating upstairs where we coukd order drinks; and order food from the "favourites menu", which did have a nice selection od bar snacks (hot food) that tasted delicious. After a short tine, they iffered us seats at the bar in the main dining, giving us access to the full menu. Food was tastey, great flavours, well cooked. Ramen wasn't on the dinner menu, so we returned for lunch a few days later. Ramen was great,. Noodles were perhaps cooked for just a fraction too long but this didn't detract from the meal. Atmosphere on Saturday night was "hapoening". Atmosphere for lunch was different (more low key) but still inviting. Staff on both occasions were excellent and friendly. I would suggest the venue is a trendy bar with a Japanese theme, rather than an izakaya BUT this doesn't matter - they've created an excellent venue with great foid and drinks. Bookings recommended - it is definitely very popular on Fridays and Saturdays.

Came here for lunch as I saw it was highly rated and had a special ramen on the menu. Ordered the special truffle tonkotsu ramen. The wait wasn’t too bad considering how busy it was. Wait staff were friendly and accomodating, and the vibe and decor matched the menu. The ramen itself was just okay. It didn’t have the truffle flavour I was expecting, broth was overly salty, charshu was dry(although still tasty)and noodles were over cooked. Can’t be too critical as I believe this was the first day of the special. From what it looked like all the other food looked delicious. Overall, still an underwhelming experience but would definitely give a second chance when back in Hobart for their other dishes.

Bustling, crowded (both decor-wise and patronage-wise) casual eatery and bar serving Japanese-themed food in a trendy, designer kitsch setting. I say Japanese-themed, as it’s more of a contemporary Oz take on traditional Japanese Izakaya culture. I.e., no authentic o-den or chasuke on the menu, and do expect more than 1 accompanying sauce on the sashimi. The food tends towards the highly salted and spicy, which perhaps isn’t surprising in a place with a prominent bar. Enjoyable evening nonetheless, and the fresh oysters are justly lauded.

Amazing place with a cool vibe and delicious food and cocktails. Despite it being packed on a Thursday we got food and drinks served pretty quickly. Ended up there for three hours sampling quite a bit of the menu and enjoying the flight tastings of sake, whiskey and umeshu. I very much enjoyed the wasabi espresso martini..wow!! Staff were super friendly, knowledgeable and attentive.. 10/10 for the vibe and food experience. Book in advance!

Sumimasen! Bar has a really cool and interesting decorations, including the toilet! Food comes on by one, seafood was fresh. I really like the yakitori, the pork was crispy and tasted really good. Somehow I dont like the pork thing (not the skewers). It tasted really weird to be a sweet and soft / tender pork, not my type of food. Tacos and tuna were something new and it works well. The whiskey sour was totally unique, ive been to places and never had this kind of whiskey sour, well done! Overall, it is a really great place to go.

Dare I say this is one of the best ramens I've had........ We had the original tonkotsu ramen. Generous toppings with chargrilled chashu, pulled pork, spring onion and bokchoy greens, beanshoot and black fungi. The soup was thick and savoury, with perfect richness. We also got the wallaby 'wings' from bruny island. Super tender, non gamey, tart flavours. Would recommend if it's your first time eating wallaby. If you wanted to eat through the aussie national animals, here's a place to do so!

Bar wa is my favourite restaurant in all of Hobart. I take everybody here and it's perfect for casual after work catch ups, midnight ramen (at dark mofo), dinners with friends or special occasions. Having been to Japan 4 times, this is the closest I get to feeling like I'm back there.

Have been a few times, food is always sensational, atmosphere and service great. Not always easy to get a table, but many options for somewhere to sit. Awesome range of Japanese beer also. One of the best local restaurants.

A Hobart culinary must do! Excellent selection of drinks and the Japanese ‘Flipper’ I had (which is a twist on a Slipper) was excellent. Every dish was a favourite and I could not fault the service. They timed the dishes perfectly and were very accomodating in providing a takeaway container so we didn’t waste the delicious food. The Kingfish collar was delicious, and all the food was very reasonably priced.

We had a large group reservation for dinner and the front of house was passive aggressive when we asked to have one more person to our dinner booking and tried to laugh it off. The food although delicious was slow to arrive and understandable as it was busy. We were advised we had to leave as the table was required back by 8.45pm however by 8.15 we were still waiting for a majority of our dishes with the last dish being served at 8.40pm. We won't be back in our next visit to Hobart.

I was impressed too how all girls were on top of making sure that every dish that came on our table was compliant with my dietary requirements. Love all the work they put to decorate the place, great atmosphere. We came out feeling very content and satisfied. Tip my hat to the chefs ‍

First of all, the aesthetic of this place is SO COOL. Such an exciting place to look at, anime lovers will love it. Now let’s get onto the food- just incredible! The sashimi, kingfish and tempura mushrooms were a massive standout. I just wish there were more gluten free options - the beef slices, karrage and wallaby my partner ate looked DELICIOUS. Also, a massive highlight was how affordable all this delicious food was - and we got a lot!

A hearty meal on our last day in Hobart. The food was flavourful, but what was most memorable was the set up of the entire bar. Bottles hung from the ceiling and art pieces lined the walls, which made the place feel exceptionally cozy and intentionally decorated. There was also outdoor seating available, where families with pets could also dine at.

We were the second group to enter the restaurant. Ambience was exquisite. Food was good. Could do a little better. The service was good, except for a bit of delay on one of our orders, must've been because of the sudden influx of customers overwhelming the staff on food preparation.

Bar Wa Izakaya was in my list for Hobart and we managed to come and we were not disappointed at all. Loved the ambience, the music they put and also the decorations of the bottles, that’s pretty awesome and creative. Such a hidden gem. Love this place!!! Ramen was really tasty, very rich pork bone broth, ramen was also very well cooked. Had the BBQ meat platter, everything was beyond my expectations, the dipping sauce adds sooo much flavour. Fried fish and pork dumplings were excellent too.

Absolutely delicious food, amazing venue (they have really taken the time to deck this place out. It’s so cool) and the staff were very attentive. The food is really reasonably priced. Good to go with 2-4 people and get a bunch of share plates. The drinks list is super extensive and delicious! A must visit when in Hobart More

The food was antithesis to japanese cuisine. The flavours were overpowering and doesn't let the main ingredients be the star of the show. The sauces needed to be dialed back by more than half.
