I was so excited to try Bangkok Palace in downtown Portland, Oregon. I walked in and made my way to wash my hands before sitting down and ordering, but the server immediately put their body between me and the path to the bathroom and vigorously pointed to the dining area incessantly repeating go sit. I responded I would do so after using the facilities, but they refused to remove themselves from my path and they just stood there blocking me until my husband, who was standing in the dining area brought to their attention that I was with him. That's when they finally removed themselves from blocking my path to the bathroom. I must add, my husband is white. I am not. After having some time to reflect on what I had just experienced by this establishment, I decided I didn't want to support a business that denies a customer to attend to a basic human need for hygienic hands. My husband and I both walked out and don't plan on returning. I can only imagine their cuisine would have been exquisite but I was not given the opportunity to find out due to this abhorrent experience. Even as I submit this review, I acknowledged and honored the persons pronouns and how they choose to identify even when they intentionally chose not to do the same for me, even when I am not white passing.

This food took me back to my childhood. My dad was stationed in the military in Thailand and one of the things he brought back was a love of Thai food. I remember going near the military base we lived near and honestly my favorite thing was every time we would stop by a Thai restaurant run by a woman who was born and raised in Thailand. After that I had a love of food cooked like it was normally in it's country of origin before it gets modified for it's new locale. The service was spot on when it came to treating it's customers right. The prices were reasonable and on top of that they just made you feel welcome in the building. I'd highly recommend it for anyone who wants all the sweet spots on a nice Thai meal hit.

Went in to grab a quick bite while shopping at the mall. Took nearly 30 minites just to get a drink and then another 30 to get food. Bartender was new, not his fault... eventually when he was at least 45 minutes backed up on people, the manager decided to send somebody to "half a$$" help him slightly... The new bartender was literally doing the best he absolutely could, but his cohort team and his manager completely let him down. He knew nothing about the food or the menu, which is kind of his bad truthfully... Food was good, especially for bar food. Burger and fries were good, drink was poured well, service was very lacking due to no oversight of a new employee by the managers or the other employees on shift. Felt sorry for him... May or may not return let's see how it goes....

WOW! First, you have to know my friends and I love Thai food, and we have had a lots and lots of Thai food. We walked in this place thinking... this place kinda cliche stereotypical Thai looking... nothing too exciting, prob do okay Thai food. When the food came, we got a bit more excited. The dishes looked very good, great colours and generous ingredients, and wonderful aroma, especially the Basil Fried Rice. We were blown away when we finally tasted the food. We were so impressed by the flavour. We were so happy to discover this quiet little gem. We were very surprised that we could just walk in and get a table at this restaurant with food tasting this good. Kudos to the chef and friendly staff. Thanks for the very delicious meal. We will be back for sure!

Nothing much sets it apart, though it's certainly still good. Spice level matched the rating system well (for me, I think a 1 is appropriate for anyone who doesn't eat spicy food regularly and a 3 for those actively seeking enjoyable heat). I was concerned when the first bite of potato I had in my curry wasn't cooked through, but it was the only one. The side of rice focuses on presentation rather than having enough to match the curry but is close enough to make do. Appreciated the presence of two single occupancy unisex restrooms. I am unlikely to come back unless someone specifically wants to eat here as there are many other options nearby that set themselves apart more and Thai places I prefer in other parts of town.

The Place was Empty on a Holiday Weekend in Downtown Portland. The food was tasty, but . . . My Mom is diabetic and we had brought in some snacks for her. After we had just gotten done ordering about TEN items from the menu, a lady said we could not eat outside food at our table. WHAT?!?! Also, they didn't allow us to plug in our phone charger in the outlet that was next to our table. Finally, they brought a wrong dish to our table, then they brought the wrong soup. When I mentioned it was wrong, the server insisted that that is what I ordered. It was Sea food, and I'm allergic to seafood. I would Not have ordered that. Needless to say, I will Not be returning. The customer service left a great deal to be desired.

  • jar8425

The food was, honestly, pretty bland and just okay. Maybe their food is better outside of lunch? The cucumber salad needed a lot more attention. It was barely tossed. Though if you take the time to push the pieces into the sauce, it was fine. Trouble was, it wasn't tossed hardly at all. The main dish was fine, if underwhelming. Don't bother getting the seafood protein mix. Stick to chicken or something less esoteric. It's not worth it and a lot of chewy blah seafood. Service was a strange mix of Fast Food and stilted. Will not be going here again.

After eight hours on a plane, my husband and I wanted a quiet place to grab a drink and dinner near our hotel. He ordered a beer and I ordered a Madras cocktail. The bangkok rolls were hot with not much flavor. While waiting for our entrees I requested another cocktail. I was denied a cocktail. The waiter proceeded to ask me several questions about my drinking (after one) and refused service. He refused to return to our table the rest of the visit....or look in our direction. Before we could leave, the food came. My green curry chicken was pink in the middle with no flavor. The waiters made rude gestures about a patron's breasts after she left. Classy. Horrible experience.

We stopped here for lunch as we stayed at the AC Marriott across the corner. The menu had a good variety. We ordered vegetarian items (Basil fried rice, tofu green curry, eggplant curry and Pad Thai noodles). Everything was made perfectly to our taste and spice level. The food was simply awesome. We ordered our food at the check-in desk and paid for it before service. That saved us time and we were able to reach hotel in time for our check-out. We'll definitely be back when we visit Portland next time.

This restaurant looked very promising in pictures and reviews, but I had a really underwhelming meal. I had the prik king cashew with chicken. The meat was well cooked, but that was really the only positive. The bell pepper was really overcooked, and even though I ordered medium spice, I think ketchup has more heat. The food has very little flavor. Possibly, I would consider trying something else in the future, but stuff so many good food options in Portland is hard to return if it doesn't stand out in the first place.

This restaurant is attractively decorated with eastern accents including table linens and table decorations. Even the menu cover looks hand crafted. Nice details! I had the Pumpkin Panang with chicken ($12.95). A spicy Panang with pumpkin, coconut milk, kaffir leaves, and bell pepper. Their heat rating ( 1 - 5 peppers) on this dish is 1 pepper. It is certainly a lip tingler. The Panang sauce has just the right amount of creamy sweetness and the consistency of a good rich gravy. It is served with an attractive side plate of white rice. The dish, service, and decor are just right. Nicely done!

The foodbhere Is great however the employees or owner that works here is rude as heck. We asked for shrimp rice with NO ADDED SPICINESS! What they gave us was VERY VERY SPICY SHRIMP AND RICE. When I asked to have it re made the woman and the cook working behind the counter proceeded to make fun of us and mimic my husband coughing and choking because they made it too spicy. Not to mention they charged 15+ dollars for rice and 5 shrimp? Save your money

Popped here for quick late lunch. The place was pretty much empty only myself and another couple. Food must be ordered at the till and then paid before you sit at a table. I had the fried chicken and beef salad. Chicken was crispy, tasty and not over cooked. It was rather salty for my taste buds. The salad was very nice, dressing was lovely and portion was big. The beef was a bit tough. I had to get a doggy bag. Service was lovely and polite. The place looked very casual, clean and located downtown.

Food decent; horrible customer service if you're black. I literally sat at my table waiting for them to offer me a to-go box or see if I needed anything else. I had to set some mone out for someone to come back and speak to me. And literally all the while there were other customers sitting around me that were being customer serviced. So long story short, after they brought out my food I was literally ignored until I flashed some money. I would strongly suggest eating somewhere else if you're black unless you're accompanied by someone else who isn't also black.

  • Shelly W

I disliked it. From service to food. My husband's was good. My calamari was breaded gross and super overcooked and chewey. When I asked for a side of sauce, one of the waiters actually said "no! It doesn't come with that sauce." The waitress was rude when I ordered an apetizer for my meal and actually said, You're just having that for your lunch?" In a snotty tone, then grabbed our menus and walked off without a word. I wouldn't recommend when there's so many good Thai restaurants in the city.

  • Manuel Cordero

Got tom yam and pork fried rice. Both plates are good. The "hot spicy level" they cuatomoze it to your taste. I got top super hot and it was good. Recomended 100%

Wasn't planning on Thai food, but I'm really happy we came here. Salad rolls and satay chicken to start. Both were really tasty. Garlic salmon and Larb for main dishes. It is so refreshing when you ask for medium spicy and its actually medium spicy!!! Both dishes were delicious and large sized Singha beer. Mmmmmmmm... next time we are in Portland we will come back. Highly recommend this place.

This is a great place for lunch. If you walk in, there will almost always be a wait between 11:30-1:00. However, if you call ahead, they’ll typically reserve a table for you. If you are 2 minutes late for your reservation, your table will be given away, so plan to be there at or just before the time you set. The Pad Thai is good, but the curries could be a bit thicker. Otherwise, this is a nice standard Thai place with all of the usual menu items.

  • Daisy Buchanan

Wonderful food, friendly accurate service, pleasant atmosphere, pretty decor. We were visiting Portland from out of state, staying downtown for a conference but we didn’t want to stand in line and spend lots at a trendy foodee spot. Bangkok Palace was the perfect local place with exceptional food. It is spicy- we like spicy but we wish we asked for medium instead of hot, because hot was very hot even for those accustomed to truly spicy food.

  • Mitchel

Ordered their Pad Se Ewe with Shrimp and it was perfect. You could smell how fresh the shrimp was. Great flavors and ingredients used. The restaurant itself is very spacious, but also offers a takeout option. Food came very quickly and staff were all very kind.

I ordered, went and washed my hands in the bathroom, and came out and the food was ready! EDIT: Even if mango is not listed in the dish, beware! I had an allergic reaction, and I know it was from eating here. It's not their fault, as I went in knowing I'm allergic.... but I was surprised that even though I picked a dish without mango that I still had a reaction. I guess it's real authentic Thai food. ;) and it was still delicious!!!

  • Andy Hickman

Awesome food! We all really enjoyed it and the ONLY waitress was incredible. She looked after the whole restaurant SO SO well. Never had to ask for a water refill. Knew who was eating what so didn't need to ask and was very polite. I thought that the quality of the food was well worth the money too. Many people in my group went back the next day.

Absolutely horrible... I ordered beef pad see ew... The beef was like chewing on shoe leather... The broccoli was completely raw ... Zero flavor what so ever... zero flavor... Do not order food from this place. It was absolutely completely horrible... paid $17 for a totally horrid pad see ew... When I called in there was apparently no manager on duty... Not surprised... This restaurant sucks!!!! Do not eat here !!!

  • Marina Chait

We've been there a couple of the and have loved both times...I will say, when pumpkins are out of season, their fried pumpkin is actually acorn squash, which is just as delicious. I love things very spicy, and they have a great balance between spicy and still being able to taste the food. Lunch time rush turns around quick, so even if it's packed, be patient, give it three minutes and you'll get a table...

Very Average. This place changed a lot after Covid. I took CEO and Client partner there and find out- Cons: a) You need to stand in queue to order, and you need to pay upfront. b) You can not book a table before ahead. c) Food quality is very average, and expensive (compare to taste of food).. d) I ordered shrimp red curry and saw only 4 shrimp piece in it. :) Pros: Staffs behavior is good.

  • Hoang Le

Wife had cravings for Thai food and we stopped in this spot on our trip to downtown Portland. It has a very cafeteria feel where you order food and sit down and they bring it to your table. The food was decent but far from the best Thai food we've ever had. Ordered them medium and spicy but there wasn't any heat on any of the dishes.

We absolutely love it!! stopped by here after pioneer place - the service was excellent, food came out quickly, and everything was delicious. the curries were spicier than we expected, but all the food was well seasoned and some of the best thai we've had in Portland. ***must try the chicken and shrimp dumplings if it is a thing you might like. FAVORITE of the night ❤️

  • Joaquin Diaz

On SW 3rd Avenue and Taylor Street in the heart of Downtown Portland. The staff is welcoming and provided a seat instantly. They the drink filled. They served the food timely. When the food was brought to the table the aroma made me hungrier. The Mango Curry was flavorful and spicy. The sticky rice was an important compliment. Great job and a definite repeat.

  • JD

It's not the worst Thai I've ever had but not nearly the best either. Portion size was decent. Very skimpy on the star shaped rice, and if you ask for more they will charge extra. Service by one young man was great but another man was also serving us and he never smiled, was very short in his responses, and rarely checked on us. Probably not going back.

  • Tiffany Chamberlain

Bangcock Palace is delicious! I always get the Cashew Chicken stir fry and am never disappointed. I've tried the basil fried rice once, it was just ok. But the shop still gets five stars because their stir fry dishes are delicious!! The Pad Gra Pow is another great dish. Highly recommend you visit this place if you love thai food as much as I do.

  • Courtney M

10/10. Best thai food I’ve had in my entire life, and I’ve been a LOT of places. Amazing portion, pad thai flavor is phenomenal. Could not reccomend more. Servers are kind and atmosphere is cozy and casual. Good prices and amazing food. I would have this place cater my wedding. My baby shower. My funeral. Anything. So good. Thanks.

  • Katherine Renteria

Don’t be fooled by the location being quiet. The food is amazing! And it’s the first Thai restaurant that I’ve ever been to who gives you authentic “Thai spice” meaning it’s a true 10/10 on the spice meter. This is my staple when I travel to Portland.

Was going to go to Luc Lac but the line was discouraging. Plus pretty loud. Went around the corner to Bangkok Palace for a more serene dinner. Very familiar wine selection at reasonable prices. Service attentive, food commensurate with the pricing. Great bang for the buck for a nice quiet dinner sans hipster flash.

  • Drew W

Decent service but very good food in a great location. Definitely be prepared for the usual waits during weekday lunches (you can get to go pretty quickly though). Their pad thai was on point and a lot of other dishes looked very appetizing. Almost most importantly though, the prices were excellent for downtown.

  • Constantine Johns

Thought the food was delicious. Dishes were unique and flavorful. A lot of different options to choose from. You can't go wrong. Service was a little slow but it was still a verybnice experience. It is right downtown so there is plenty to do roght around it. Definitely recommend checking it out.

I dined at Bangkok Palace a few times now and each time I experience pleasant service and delicious versions of my favorite Thai dishes; beef and basil stir fry, pad Thai, and masumon Curry. it's a touch towards the price of your side but a pleasant place to sit and eat if you're downtown.

  • Dan Silverman

To be honest, I was originally planning on going to the Vietnamese restaurant around the corner, but I didn’t have the patience to wait in line. So I came to Bangkok Palace instead. I’m very glad that I did. Excellent Pad Thai and a nice local IPA were accompanied by friendly service.

  • Wilson Acosta

Idk how this place gets 5 stars. The food is equivalent to the food I can get at a Chinese place with dinner specials. Even then, I've been to Chinese places with better food. It might have just been the late night, but I just hated it. The service was not bad and drinks were alright.

  • Curt

WARNING: "VEGETARIAN" items will have Fish sauce or Oyster sauce. So if you are vegetarian, items will contain fish or oysters. Very few of their items can be ordered without fish sauce. This was not clear on their menu. Ask for vegan or "super vegetarian" if you want to avoid meat.

So I only got the Thai , but the reason for 4 Starz is because the food didn't taste that great. But it was definitely in top 5 or 10 for Thai food. I eat a lot of Thai haha. But definitely recommend, super peacefully . Huge portions awesome place! And great customer service

  • 164 Gresham

I think it’s worth to try dinner here. I had chicken noodle for lunch. It has good flavor of some Thai spice (not sure what it is) and healthy taste (not too heavy). Fresh crispy vegetable and chewy noodle make well-balanced texture. It was a nice plate for me.

  • Maya C

Amazing, I’m a fan to put it lightly. Flavor exceptional, serving size generous, service delightful. I would love to eat here every hour of ever day. If they ever shut down so will my will to live. Anyways… I would recommend this establishment to any passerby

  • Nick Jordan

Went here with 9 people visiting from out of town, and everyone liked what they had. I had a Mango Fried Rice w/ Shrimp that was delicious. Only in Portland for 5 days, but I'll probably eat here again this week. Good value for the price as well.

  • Steve Roberts

Had a great expect here while taking a break from the portland winter light Festival! We were quickly seated, the food and drinks were fantastic and all the staff were knowledgeable and friendly! Would definitely recommend and will be returning!

  • Dina U

Great service and even better food. My husband was in the Navy and loved the food from his Pacific tour- this place hit the spot for him! We tried a variety of spicy/non-spicy and everything tasted amazing. I'm looking forward to our next trip.

  • Alicia Carter

Poor quality for being a downtown location. The sprouts had a metallic taste. Also, in addition to being over priced the appearance was that of canned food and tasted as such. Super disappointed after giving this place a second chance. No mas.

  • Kellie Lang

Best in Portland Metro in my opinion. The thing I like most is that they don't use microwaves or pre-cook anything. Chicken NEVER tastes weird of has a rubbery texture. Everything made to order. Generous portions. Quality ingredients.

  • Sophie Pratt

The food here is amazing and the prices are great for their lunch menu. The pad thai was flavourful and sauced just perfectly. I got it with pork and it was tender and nothing was overcooked. Service was quick and friendly as well.

  • Wendy Kleinfeldt

This place is super close to my work at the World Trade Center building. This is great for lunch. Their menu is straightforward, and their pangnang pumpkin curry dish is awesome. Their pad Thai is one of the best, imo in Portland.

  • Ricky Keller

I had lunch two days in a row here while visiting a conference. The Pad Thai is delicious, I got it with shrimp. This is an excellent lunch spot. Very prompt and efficient service. In and out in 20 minutes with a delicious lunch.

  • Martha Brody

Delicious! We were the only people in there and it was a calm not fancy place but the staff was SO nice and the food was great! My friend got a dish to go and the server asked when he'd like it brought out so it didn't get cold.

  • Derek Dittmer

Walked here and tried to open the door at 7:19pm and it’s locked... Online and door says it closes at 8 and there are still many patrons inside on a Friday night… don’t know if the food is good but really?

Good service, nice people. The food was pretty good. Nice spice level, good flavor. My curry had too much bamboo, and the bamboo was a bit undercooked. But that is just a nitpicky opinion. I will be going back.

Reasonable stop for usual Thai food. Pretty good Pad Kee Mao, but can't say it's significantly better than the top Thai food carts around. Benefit is that you get a roof over your head while you eat I suppose?

The basil fried rice was one of the best fried rice dishes I've ever had. I will definitely come back next time I'm in Portland.
