"I had ordered a set of 26inch rims from backpedal I told the owner I wanted them a matching set when he had placed my order for the rims When I got my order they were not matching rims one had all black spokes the other one was a black ring with silver spokes they were not a matching set when I asked him if he would respoke one of the rims to make it match the other one he told me it would cost me $150"

I had ordered a set of 26inch rims from backpedal I told the owner I wanted them a matching set when he had placed my order for the rims When I got my order they were not matching rims one had all black spokes the other one was a black ring with silver spokes they were not a matching set when I asked him if he would respoke one of the rims to make it match the other one he told me it would cost me $150.00 to make them match when I found outerrim bikes they would do it for $50.00 that was after the fact that he would not take the products back and make everything right or refound my money back I will never go back to this bike shop ever again not worth my time. It's not so much that it wasn't done in a timely manneras it was the you would not back your products or your business by rectifying the issue of the rims not being identical when I asked for them after I had been a loyal customer to you for awhile and put a lot of money in to your business I like to support my local businesses but I can't support a local business that does not want to rectify its screw up all I asked was for it to be either fixed to where they were matching rims or you refund my money because the order was not correct after I specified they had to be identical matching rims and that was after I was told that it was a special order which it was not a special order
I have a lot of empathy for small businesses and it could have just been a stressful or off day for staff. That said, the owner (I'm assuming) and their employee where not the friendliest and pretty curt.... but whatever, again people have off days like I said. I purchased a bike for parts to swap on a new build and they said the bike received "a full overhaul" (which was again mentioned in the craigslist ad. Seatpost was dry as a skeleton (no grease), cassette lockring was loose, seatpost bolt was rusty, seized and fairly stripped. They didn't know they had the bike, or that it had 650B wheels. Having previously worked as a bike mechanic, I can just say that these overlooked things are a little concerning to me. Take that all with a grain of salt, but worth knowing that you should throughly check over any bike you purchase from them (I should have). Giving them four stars, just because I don't want to effect their business. Just trying to inform people.
My bike came back in worse shape than I left it. I brought my bike here after freshly moving to PDX. I normally tune my bike myself but my work stand was still packed up. I got my bike back and things seemed to be going smooth at first. It was after my 5th ride that I realized my bike was making more noise than usual. Before I knew it my front derailleur stopped shifting. Unpacked my stand and put my bike up on it and immediately noticed that the hex bolt that holds the cable tension was loose. I BARELY had to touch it before it completely came undone. It looked like he may have even removed my bottle cage bc those bolts were loose as well. Decided to do a full tune since now I didn’t trust what was done, and noticed my rear derailleur was also missing a piece…a crucial piece that assists with indexing. I now have to purchase a new rear derailleur. I DO NOT recommend this place.
One of the worst bike shops I have been to. Been few times due to flat tire. Since I like to support local independent business I went there , big mistake. First time took four days to change the tire second time gear shift was broken during repair. Had to go back same day store was closed. Bike was nearly unusable for two days. Now at the shop to get it fixed. Also the prices seem odd brand new tire plus tube about $100 tube only about $45 all labour including. After this appointment I won’t be coming back. The service is horrible. On my way to home rear wheel comes loose nuts we’re not tightened see picture. That is definitely unacceptable and dangerous.
I went into Backpedal to get a new tire for my wife's bike. When I got there I realized she had a broken spoke as well. I showed it to the guy who works there (wish I got his name) and he brought to my attention that her brake pads were shot. He offered a special on a tune up so I took advantage of the offer. He let me know that it would be ready for pick up on Tuesday. I then told him I would have to pass because my wife needs the bike for work on Monday. BAM! He finished the bike the next day for pick up. The bike was clean and my wife said it rode perfectly. I can't thank him enough and Backpedal will get my business from now on.
Came here first looking for a U-lock at a reasonable price and found it. Came back because my handlebars got out of alignment and I needed a quick fix. The guys there were super friendly and repaired my bike quickly. While there I spotted a sweeeeet bike seat with a back to it! And only for $25. Score. They even installed it for me and only charged $5. That's the thing I like about this place: good selection for the size of store, good service, and reasonable prices. That it's just a few minutes from my house is also a bonus. but in my neighborhood there are bike shops everywhere, and this is the one I always go to.
I'm new to cycling as we know it today, threw my work I came across a older Trex 7000 ZX. I looked around for a local bike shop to have the bike checked out an made safe. I decided to take it to Backpedal as they where only a few blocks from my house. I could not be happier with how the bike was returned to me, it was clean with new cables, housings, gear Cassette, chain, 3 1/2" handle bar riser, tires an tubes. The bike rides like brand new ! I plan to support Backpedal as a loyal customer for a vary long time. The best part was the price way more than fair. Happy cycling an be safe
I went into his shop with a easy fix on a kids bike. The guy tried to pull the shady mechanic move by suggesting he was busy with a few other jobs and that I should leave the bike and come back in a few days. The guy didn’t look busy at all his work station was empty and I sure he was going to charge me a huge bill for a easy fix. I ended up using a old part on another bike and within a hour my daughters bike was fixed. I was going to buy a new brake from him but he didn’t even look at the bike to make a suggestion. Total garbage.
I’ve brought my bike in twice now and both times it got fixed up and was running smooth in very short order. I got lucky my first trip and could get sorted immediately but on my second trip there was a bit of a line. Between juggling phone calls, diagnosing drop-ins and working on bikes I was made to feel like a valued customer, which is no small thing to me. That fix was quick and free, and came with a once over to make sure everything was in working order (I came in after a crash). Highly recommend, will be coming back.
Never ever go to Backpedal Cycleworks. I broke a spoke on Friday. Called the owner on Friday and he said he could work on it Saturday morning. I showed up right when they opened at 11am. He said he would call me in a few hours. Didn’t hear from him so I called him at 4:30pm and he said he had not even started. He then told me he could have it done by 2:00 Sunday. I show up and find out he had still had not even started it and it was in the back somewhere. I took it back and dropped it off at another shop. Never again.
Dave is the best guy I know, on a number of occasions I have brought my road bike and motorized bike for random repairs or parts, I always feel welcome and taken care of. If you are a compitant rider and not a snowflake of a person you will have a wonderful experience. Whenever you can give Dave your business and keep this local gem going, prices are great, service is great, and his selection of bikes both new and used. I have even walked in and been able to hagle down prices when I was in need of new clipped pedals.
I was looking to make a quick hassle-free purchase on a used mountain bike I could take to Burning Man. I didn’t want to spend too much knowing the playa can ruin bikes, but I needed something reliable. Dave gave me two options right away, worked with me on my price range and gave me a great deal. I feel so much better buying from a local shop than from someone online; he even made some on the spot adjustments to make sure it was in good working order for me. Thank you again Dave!!
Excellent customer service! My bike shop of many years closed down, and I recently moved into the neighborhood. I will be taking my bikes here from now on. They showed a lot of care and went above and beyond to help me figure something out. I sensed many years of experience, kindness, and that this is a shop that's in it for the love of bicycles. Thanks for the stickers, bolt, and help today!
Backpedal has always been my go-to bike shop for parts or service. I have never been in there and had a bad experience and my bike always comes out in amazing shape. The prices are affordable, and the shop has a huge selection of used parts to purchase. I would recommend this shop to everyone from people to have never touched a bike to well seasoned cyclists
Thorough and quality-minded. I’d been to three places before Backpedal fixed my brakes. I didn’t even ask for that, I’d given up, but a brake adjustment was part of their tune-up. I dropped in to get new pads and sprang for the tune-up because the price was good and I am so happy I did - it’s like a brand new ride, clean, responsive, and smooth.
Bike was all fixed and done on time in and in perfect condition. Bike works even better than before, and the price i paid for was absolutely worth it. Was even late to pick up my bike and Dave still sought out to wait for me later than he supposed too. I was extremely impressed how amazing he cleaned my bike up, and for an amazing price.
Really helpful local bike shop. I see some comments on here saying the guy is rude but I think he's just a bit awkward (I am too so that doesn't help). Anyway, he helped me fix a flat tire I was trying to do myself. So instead of trying to upsell a service he taught me how to do it, so that was cool. 5/5 support your local bike shop
This is by far the best experience I've buying and a NEW bike. Chill and relaxed, the staff tops it off with no ego or pretentiousness. Great guys, good bike, and beer at the pub on the corner. With so many options to buy a bike in Portland...hard to find a nirvanna like this. esp .in the SE Oh yeah..They're smart too.....:] cheers
I want to share my appreciation for the staff at this shop. I came in Saturday near the end of the work day with a busted skewer on my bike. The person at the front desk stopped what he was working on to help me get the part I needed. This got me back on the road quickly. I do appreciate the prompt service in this encounter.
we're infrequent riders, myself not at all. just popped in today to fix a friend's bike. he patched several leaks in the tube since there were no new ones. I bought the tire liners to protect the tubes, and the back tire we brought in for size matching was pretty thrashed, so I replaced that. support your local businesses!
While I love supporting small business the staff at this shop is totally hit or miss when it comes to providing kind and helpful service. This seems like more of a hobby than a business for the mechanic as he seems to be bothered by customers coming in. Take your business elsewhere to the many wonderful LBS in this city
I have arthritic thumbs so it’s hard to take off tires nowadays even with tools. I recently got a rear flat, called to check if they could do a drop-in fix (yes), swung by, in and out in under 10 mins for $19 while I chilled on the nice orange sofa by the window. Nice guy. Shop has good relaxed feel.
Great bike shop. Affordable prices, and nice folks. Good selection of products. I bought a bike for my short commute in a dodgy area. I returned later in the month to change the freewheel and they did it in 5 mins. Bike is smooth and quiet now. Thanks Back Pedal. Your my new unpretentious shop.
These guys are awesome! I needed a very specific shim to fit my front derailleur; not only were they super helpful over the phone, they also took the time to confirm it would be compatible when I came into the shop and gave me a great deal on it! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ HIGHLY RECOMMEND
I put brand new tires and inner tubes on my bike. Something wasn't right and these guys adjusted my alignment, fixed a cinched innertube, and aired them up for a great price. Love these guys- great neighborhood feel and they are stoked to get more bicyclists on the road.
I needed my son’s bike done in time for his bike camp and put off taking it in until there was hardly any time. I told the guy and he said he’d do his best. They got it tuned up in time, charged a fair price, and helped us adjust the seat to the right height. Very happy!
Dave did a great job on my bike, on short notice, and worked with me to get it back in the same day. He was honest and fair in estimating the price and gave me some advice to save money as well. I absolutely will be back to support this local shop!
I recently purchased a used specialized mountain bike for my son. I needed a gear adjusted and seat shortened and he fixed it on the spot. Amazing customer service and it came with a 90 day warranty. Highly recommend!
Great shop. Squeezed my bike in for some last minute work before a big trip and at a lower price than other shops. Even did a handful of extra adjustments and touches that are very appreciated! I recommend this shop!
Dave is a great help, he fixed my main gear at a great price, and now he is putting white walls tires on my bike. First time there, and he will get all my business from now on...keep up the great work dave....:o)
I asked an employee for a tire and for them to pump it up for me, I dont think the employee knew what he was doing. When I got home I tested it out for about 10 minutes then right when I got back it exploded.
Stopped in with a flat tire and owner fixed it immediately, later had a complete tuneup for a reasonable price, and recently stopped in during a ride to have my saddle adjusted. Great service and no attitude!
Excellent place The bicycles priced very reasonably and also reconditioned classic bicycles Very highly skilled bicycle mechanics he knows all about bicycles highly would recommend going to this place
Great mechanic and homey vibe, lots of essential parts & bits, friendly staff, quick turn-around times, often will fix your issue while you wait, prices very fair. Happy this is my local bike shop!
100% recommend this store! There's a nice selection of bikes and Dave was very helpful with finding me what I need. Got a nice commuter bike, plus I was in and out in probably under 30 minutes!
I love this place! Dave does great work at a fair price. He got my bike working like new and riding like a dream, and is always helpful if I stop in with a question. Highly recommended!
Backpedal fixes my bike, and I don't have to take the bike back again. They're cool, friendly dudes, and laid back. They deliver on time and they're nice. These guys are awesome!!!
Super friendly and fair! They were nice enough to squeeze a tune up in for my winter-worn bike today and got it in great shape in record time for me to ride it to work tomorrow.
Awesome prices for service, and a resource for hard to find parts. They are consistent, courteous and reliable. Just go here first if you are searching for anything.
Great service and down to earth people. I’m glad to have them in my neighborhood but I would easily cross town if I had to in order to work with these guys. Thanks!
They were affordable but did not catch that my front sprocket was something totally different & the tune up did no good. Great guys but not the place for bike & I
Great shop. I caught them at a good time and they took care of my brake adjustment right away. Very cool staff. Interesting selection of used bikes and parts.
Rude service and my bike was still broke when I left.... thanks for letting me know what kind of company you run, and btw no refunds for bad service.
Great guy, fair prices, convenient location...and you can go down a couple doors and have a Harp Lager at Cadigans! What more could you want?
Great, convenient and friendly bike shop. They perform high quality work quickly and are fair about prices. Worth your time checking out.
Flat in the Hood, dropped in and they cleared a rack and jumped on it. Excellent customer service at a fair price! Highly recommend.
Great service both times I've gone, humble staff and very ready to answer questions and provide advice for the everyday bike rider.
Great bike shop! I've bought bikes there and had repairs done. The service is great, reasonably priced, and quick.
Fair customer service, very low selection, repair shop onsite with minimal merchandise available for purchase.
Had my bike tuned up and it rides great. Awesome customer service. Highly recommend Backpedal Cycleworks!!!
Fast, polite, and funny owner. Always prioritizes his customers partnered with the busy workload he gets.
Great work rejuvenating my Trek bike. Will be going back there for any maintenance or work in future.
cheap parts. rude staff. decide for yourself if the parts are cheap enough to deal with the owner.
I received a quicker than expected turnaround and my bike's problem solved for a fair price.
Great local bike shop. Even helped me reseat the tire on my gas scooter last year. :)
laid back, friendly, helpful, know their stuff, fair prices, good sound track.
Always good to deal with. Great bikes and great service. Keep it up Dave!
Great bike shop! Helpful and friendly, a real neighborhood asset.
